LIVE Magazine EXCLUSIVE by Levvy Carriker I was watching Entertainment Tonight as I was getting ready for… I love the show because it is informative and well,,,kinda nice to the celebrities and give them a chance to showcase their careers. It is all about pushing people up to me so I like their approach. So while I was slipping on my shoes the TV was close by and the visuals popped to a new singer by the name of Steve Grand. I stopped putting on the second shoe as I started to look and listen to this very talented singer and songwriter. One line after another I was amazed at his pitch and coolness. The segment went by so I went to my phone and said, “OK Google” and then repeated, “Steve Grand”. I listened to his music for about ten minutes on my phone then I realized I was going to be late to an event…I skipped out of my room towards the front door and noticed I had only one shoe on. This year Steve Grand will perform at The Center LGBT Center Stage. Thank you David Gray of Gray Marketing for introducing me to Steve. Levvy: When did you realize that you were going to sing professionally? Steve:: I’ve been playing piano since I was five, but stumbled upon singing when my brother and I started getting into rock and roll. We played guitars and needed a singer for the band. So that’s where it started. I continued to sing because it was a way for me to express myself and perform the songs I wrote. It was always about the songs for me. LC: Where did you grow up and did you sing there? And where did you first perform in public? SG: I grew up in Lemont, a south suburb of Chicago. I grew up singing in church and doing piano recitals every year. I kind of became the “piano guy” in town because I played anywhere and everywhere I could. LC: I was reading up on you and found some really cool stuff about you Steve. One was that you raised $326,593 on kickstarter with 4,905 backers. I guess having 13 million views on YouTube helps a bit?..lol SG: I I am, to this day, so grateful for the support I received while producing my debut album “All-American Boy.” I’m very lucky for that, and very lucky to even live in a time where someone from a Middle Class family from the suburbs, without a record label, can receive that kind of financial backing to bring my creative vision to life. LC: The music video of “All-American Boy was shot really well. Where was that filmed and what was the shoot like to you? SG: I It was filmed at a few locations in Northern Wisconsin on a property I rented from a friend of a friend, and my high school friend’s backyard in my hometown. The shoot of that video is something I will always be proud of. I wrote the treatment and hired the director and the crew. I didn’t have much money, so I am very lucky I got such talent for such little money. LC: Do you get involved in the video production? PHOTOS BY ALLAN SPIERS SG: Very! Every video is different and it all depends on how much I have going on at the time and if I already have an idea for the video. LC: There are a lot of emotions in your songs? Do you write when you going through something in your life?
With over 10 Million views on YouTube, a #3 Album on The Billboard Independent Album Artist Charts, and one of the most successful Music Kickstarter campaigns ever under his belt, Steve Grand has not just broken the rules, but has changed the game when it comes to being a successful singer-songwriter in the era of YouTube and Spotify. 9 9 Grand’s first of many self-funded music videos, “All-American Boy,” released in July of 2013, tells the story of unrequited love between two men, and it took the internet by storm when it was released. It led the openly gay artist to be lauded as a trailblazer in the entertainment world. Touring internationally and across the country in 2016, Steve has also made appearances on Good Morning America, CNN, Larry King Now, and other national outlets where he has used his platform to advocate for human rights and LGBT Equality. SG: I Of course. I look at my debut record as a nice way to cap off the time from when I was a teen to my early 20s. So it covers lots of ground: love and loss at heartbreak and hope and regret… all of it. LC: Steve, what are you plans for the future? SG: I I’m self-producing my next record right now, but I can’t say when it will be out. I still am writing the last song, which is the title track. LC: Where can one buy your albums?
