I am confident of Mahadayi
meeting’s success: Siddaramaiah
Bengaluru: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on
Thursday said that he was confident of the success
of the meeting on Mahadayi river water
scheduled for October 21 in Mumbai.
Speaking with media persons after releasing
the special issue of Vartha Bharathi, a Kannada
daily, on the occasion of its 14th anniversary
at Krishna in Bengaluru, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah
said Mahadayi Water Tribunal had advised
the three states to resolve the water dispute
through negotiations. “I contacted Chief
Minister of Goa and Maharashtra over the
phone to arrange a meeting for this purpose.
I had made it clear that I am ready to attend
the meeting irrespective of who organizes it
(Maharashtra or Goa). Now, Maharashtra Chief
Minister has come forward to organize the
meeting. I have convened an all-party meeting
on October 19 to get suggestions and opinion
from all political parties,’’ Siddaramaiah said.
When asked about Goa Congress leader’s
statement that Goa would not release a drop of
Mahadayi river water to Karnataka, the chief
minister said that he decided to attend the
meeting as per the advice of Mahadayi Water
Tribunal. “The chief ministers of Goa and Maharashtra
will attend the meeting after availing
the suggestions and opinions of all political
parties of the respective states. Therefore,
we need not give too much importance to the
statement of a particular leader. It will be the
Hassan MLA Prakash accuses
minister of harassing his brother
Hassan: H.S. Prakash, legislator
from Hassan, has accused
Minister for Animal Husbandry
A. Manju of harassing
his brother and forcing him
to take voluntary retirement
as Assistant Director of the
Department of Animal Husbandry.
The MLA has also
released an audio clip of the
minister’s telephone conversation
with the officer. MLA
Prakash’s younger brother
Dr. H.S.Mohan Das took voluntary
retirement earlier
this year.
Addressing the media
on Thursday, Prakash said
Manju, who is also minister
in-charge of Hassan district,
had telephoned his brother
Mohan Das on January 7 this
year and told him that he had
received a complaint
against him
and based on that
he would get him
transferred to a distant place.
The minister in his conversation
alleged that my
brother had taken a bribe
from someone and claimed
he had photographs to prove
his allegation. If he had received
any complaint against
my brother, who is a government
official, he should
have ordered an inquiry. But,
instead, he threatened him
with transfer. Fed up with
the development, my brother
took voluntary retirement
from the service, though he
had one-and-half-a-years of
service left, Prakash said.
The MLA alleged that the
minister targeted his brother
for political reasons. There
was no need of threatening
him with transfer. “This is
purely for political reasons. I
did not want to share this all
with the media all these days.
However, recently, the minister
shifted the veterinary
polyclinic set up in Hassan to
Arakalgud, his constituency.
This move prompted me to
bring out the past incident,”
he added.
Further, he said the minister
could order an inquiry
into the allegation against his
brother. “Let him order for an
inquiry if he was found guilty
let his pension benefits be
withdrawn,” he challenged.
Former minister Srinivas Prasad to quit
Congress, criticizes Siddaramaiah
Mysuru: Former state minister and veteran
Congress leader, Srinivas Prasad, has decided
to quit his assembly seat as well as the
primary membership of Congress on October
17. The senior most Dalit leader from
the state, who represents Nanjangud constituency
in the state assembly, made this
announcement at a press conference held
at Nanjangud on Wednesday October 12. He
said that he has decided to leave Congress,
having been frustrated at the conspiracy-driven
politics being played by chief minister,
Siddaramaiah.
“Since young, I have maintained self-respect
in political field. Siddaramaiah has
delivered a blow to my self-respect. I had
planned to resign during last month, but
postponed it in view of Cauvery dispute.
Congress does not seem to be in need of honest
politicians like me. Congress is suffering
under the grip of a handful of people here,
and Siddaramaiah perhaps had to sacrifice
my interests to carve out a future for Mallikarjun
Kharge’s son,” he quipped.
Although both JDS and BJP have begun
efforts to woo Prasad, as per information,
Prasad is considering the option of fighting
the election as an independent candidate,
and choose a political party after the
victory. Still, both JDS state president, H D
Kumaraswamy, and BJP state president, B S
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah releasing the special issue of Vartha Bharathi, a Kannada daily, on the occasion of its 14th anniversary at
Krishna on Thursday. Minister for Bengaluru Development K J George and others are seen on the occasion.
first meeting. We want to have a comprehensive
discussion on all issues during the meeting,’’
the chief minister said.
On the issue of state BJP leaders meeting
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis,
the chief minister said Mahadayi water
dispute is between Karnataka and Goa and
it would be better to discuss with the chief
minister of Goa. “I am of the opinion that
there is no need for any controversy at this
stage. I want the proposed meeting
Yeddyurappa, have got in touch with local
leaders to discuss possibility of convincing
the veteran to join their respective parties.
As soon as his decision to leave assembly
and the Congress came to be known, BJP
leaders got in touch with him and invited
him to join their party on the day retired IAS
officer, Shivaram, is scheduled to join it. JDS
also offered to admit him in a huge rally that
would be held in the city for the purpose,
and offered a position of responsibility if he
opted to join their party.
However, when a JDS leader recently met
him, he reportedly told him that he wants to
prove his might by fighting the bypoll independently
as he felt he has suffered reverses
within his own community. He feels that the
coming election will be the litmus test for his
popularity in the region. If Prasad decides to
fight independently, both JDS and BJP might
extend support from outside, without fielding
their candidates, it is being analyzed.
successful,’’ he said.
He said the hearing of the special leave petition
(SLP) on Cauvery is scheduled for October
18 in the Supreme Court. “Legal experts
and officials of water resources department
are busy in preparing the necessary
documents,’’ he said.
He has assured to look into the objections
and suggestions from the public on the
proposed steel flyover between Basaveshwara
Circle and Hebbal.
Huge turnout at
Muharram procession
Bengaluru: People turned out in large numbers at several
places in Bengaluru for the annual Yaum-e-Ashura Juloos,
the procession on the 10th day of Muharram when Muslims
mourn Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad
and his family who were martyred on this day.
Dressed in black, the mourners began the procession at
Masjid-e-Askari, Johnson Market and other places and moved
towards the Persian Shia cemetery.
In unison, the crowd called out Hussain’s name as men and
young boys gathered at the centre of the procession, were
beating their chests to the sound of drums.
As women and onlookers watched, the men took out chains
with blades and knives attached to them and whipped their
backs with it. Scars from previous years were visible on the
backs of many. Even young boys took part in the ritual, onlookers
said.
Abbas Khaleeli, a student explained that the Zanjeer ka
matam, as it is known, is performed so that we feel the pain
Hussain and his family went through in the Battle of Karbala.
This battle was fought with Yazid, who was propagating anti-Islamic
practices, he said.
Zaki Khaleeli, a consultant, and his family refrain from all
forms of entertainment during the first 13 days of Muharram.
We do not have any parties and we listen to sermons more
often. We had a death in our family recently but we did not
have the usual mourning period or have a funeral ceremony
because the mourning of Muharram precedes all else, he added.
Families have congregations in their homes calling people
from the community to gather and pray in their homes. “It is
said that the spirit of the martyrs will come to your home if
you have a congregation. Food is offered to the people who
come,” Khaleeli added.
There was an atmosphere of grief as poems about the sacrifice
of Hussain and the sufferings of his family were recited.
Banners with sayings condemning terrorism were also put up.
The police monitored the crowd to ensure that no untoward
incident took place and, ambulances were on standby to ensure
medical aid to those in need. Volunteers handed out packets
of water to the participants. Water was sprayed to provide
relief to the participants and to clean the blood on the path.
Kidnapped boy
rescued in Hubballi
Hubballi: An eleven-yearboy
from Mumbai, who allegedly
escaped from the
clutches of kidnappers,
was rescued by the railway
police in Hubballi.
According to the police,
the boy who identified
himself as Abhay, told the
police that he was from
Bhaskar Nagar in Mumbai.
In a statement given by
the boy to the railway police
officials, he was reportedly
was kidnapped by four
masked men from his place
on October 10 and claimed
to be drugged by them.
After regaining consciousness,
he said he managed
to escape and came to
Hubballi railway station.
The incident came to light
after the railway police
questioned Abhay, who
was found loitering at the
railway station.
After preliminary investigations,
the railway police
are now making efforts
to contact Abhay’s parents
in Mumbai. Meanwhile,
Abhay is now under the
custody of Bala Mandir in
Hubballi.
Further investigation is
on, the police sources said.
Yettinahole project- Centre
permits to cut down trees
Mangaluru: The department
of forest and environment
has given its
clearance to cut down
4,995 trees and 1,332
bamboo groves spread
over 14 acres of forest in
Sakleshpur, Hassan district,
for the much talked
Yethinahole Project. Thus
decks have been cleared
for the project to move
ahead. The trees and
groves so cut have been
ordered by the state government
to be stocked
in the timber yard at
Hassan. The actual measurement
of timber and
firewood so got need to
be got certified by deputy
forest conservator
before shifting them to the
timber yard.
The Yettinahole project,
which proposes to
provide drinking water
to Kolar, Chikkamagaluru,
and Bengaluru urban
districts has not go down
well with the people of
western ghat region.
Subsequently, it attracted
various organizations
to go on agitation across
the region. Hence, the
project was facing stumbling
block in the form
of non-clearance of the
state’s proposals to clear
forest areas. There were
allegations that scores
who was studying in college
in Hubballi city.
According to the police,
Kiran kumar had reportedly
left behind a video death
note recorded on his mobile
in Telugu, before taking
the extreme step.
Kirankumar and the
girl were reportedly had
without obtaining prior
approval of the ministry
of environment. There
are a few cases against
the project before National
Green Tribunal.
The state had given
an undertaking to the
tribunal not to cut down
trees without getting
clearance from central
government. The tribunal
is likely to issue its final
Hassan: legislator from
Hassan, H.S.Prakash and
former MLC Patel Shivaram
have opposed the State
Government’s move to shift
veterinary polyclinic from
Hassan to Arakalgud, the
assembly constituency represented
by A. Manju, Minister
for Animal Husbandry
and minister in-charge of
Hassan district. The government
had issued an
order to this effect earlier
this month.
In a press joint press
meet, both the leaders opposed
the government’s
move. Meanwhile, Prakash
said the minister shifted
the polyclinic to his constituency
for political reasons.
“Polyclinic is required
in Hassan as it is district
centre. Being a Minister
of Animal Husbandry he
should have got a polyclinic
allotted to his constituency,
instead of shifting the clinic
already set up in Hassan,”
Prakash said.
Shivaram alleged that
the minister in-charge of
the district was engaged in
petty politics. “If our party
also wanted to do politics
over development works
our leaders would have
taken government medical
college to Holenarasipur.
We did not indulge in petty
politics,” he said.
A man with many achievements
Meet Dr. K S Rangappa, who envisaged the
future of the erstwhile University of Mysore
for which he has successfully created
the required platform. Credited with number
of achievements stapled with patents
and innovative research papers, Rangappa
spoke extensively to Nadia S Ranganathan,
Reporter with CityHilights, on his achievements.
Can you elaborate on your
achievements?
There are many who achieved more than I did.
I am a hardworker in simple words, I come from
a very poor family background I had no other past
time other than reading, and my hobby was to only
read but I never dreamt of all this, never not once
did I have the slightest clue. The interest was created
when I was in my B.Sc and after M.Sc, all I wanted
was a job so that I can support my family. I used
to earn Rs 400 and hardly spend about Rs100 and
the rest used to go to my family. I was very hard
working I wasn’t limited under working hours or
anything of that sort. To me my work never felt
like work it was pure passion. And you know hard
work never fails. Many of my well wishers told me
to continue my studies. After M.Sc I earned a scholarship
and did my research. Before getting my Ph.D
degree I got my post doctorate offer in Canada and
from that day I haven’t looked back. Canada was
my first exposure and it had entirely changed me, it
was my stepping stone. The University of Saskatchewan,
in Canada had inspired me to stay in the research
field. I have 10 countries working with me
out of which very recently one Israel academy has
awarded me one the best in the field. My interest is
to work for the molecules that are good at treating
cancer, Alzheimer and Diabetes. I have 10 patents
in the area of drug and scoring program. Infact
my group has synthesized more that 5,000 molecules.
A major credit goes to them for their hard
work. The Japan society for promotional science
has awarded me 5 awards from their university. I
also have a collaboration with Cambridge University,
UK I have published 20 papers with them. I
have travel quite a bit and that’s how I was able
to publish all these papers. I have collaborate with
JNCASR (Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced
Scientific Research) for research I have 2-3 patents
who are working with me towards cervical cancer
out of 5,000 only 10 molecules have been prominent
as of now. You can’t preserve these molecules
just because they are good you have to put them
into use. The molecules will be taken to clinical trial
and the results will know. I work for chemotherapeutics
as my background is chemistry. I always
look in for chemistry.
Why did you take up chemistry? Was
there any particular reason for this?
Personally, chemistry is the best subject. I
wasn’t a very bright child I used to score around
70% to 75%. But my teachers used to encourage
me a lot. I studied at Sharada Vilas College, Mysuru.
My foundation is strong thanks to all of them, and I
was drawn towards the subject. After my M.Sc and
Ph.D my exposure to the subject was more hence
I selected this field and I wanted to give back the
knowledge that I had gained with whatever resources
I have.
BGS Global Hospitals successfully performs
complex revision hip replacement surgery
Dr. KS Rangappa, Vice Chancellor, University of Mysore
Bengaluru: The hospital
giant BGS Global Hospitals,
super specialty quaternary
care center, successfully
performed a complex
revision hip replacement
surgery, benefitting the
quality of life of a 52 year
old woman from Kenya.
The surgery was led by Dr.
Basavaraj C.M and Dr. Santosh
Hakkalamani.
Margaret Wanjiru,
aged 52, was born with a
dislocated hip joint. She
underwent multiple correction
surgeries through
the years. In 1997, she
underwent a primary
hip replacement surgery
which was met with a few
hurdles. She had to go into
surgery 4 times resulting
in complete bed rest for 5
full months. The surgery
did not solve the issue at
hand, causing limping and
discomfort. In 2007, she
met with a road accident
that caused a fracture adjacent
to the replaced hip.
This was eventually fixed,
though it left her in extreme
pain, thereby affecting
her ability to walk freely.
At this point, Margaret
decided to go in for a revision
surgery and enquired
a, a few medical facilities in
the UK and US. Quoting the
high cost of surgeries in
these countries, Margaret
reached out to BGS Global
Hospital in Bangalore. Her
research suggested that
BGS Global Hospital carried
out these surgeries at
a fraction of the cost while
not compromising on the
quality of care or the quality
of implants used in the
surgery.
The patient presented
with severe damage to the
bone in the hip socket.
She was short by 2 inches
in one leg, causing a
prominent limp. She was
experiencing extreme pain
and was regularly on painkillers
to manage it.
The team at BGS Global
Hospital, led by Dr. Basavaraj
C.M, successfully
completed the revision
surgery, by reconstructing
the missing bone, using
prosthesis made of a tantalum
element, that has the
advantage of being 80%
porous, ceramic hip bearing
and techniques such
as allograft. With a well
defined surgical plan, they
were able to tackle the core
issue as well as the short
limb. The patient is now
completely pain free and
she has now regained her
limb length.
Commenting on the
case, Dr. Basavaraj C.M,
Consultant Orthopedic
Surgeon, BGS Global Hospital
said, “Although Hip
and Knee Joint Replacement
surgery is very successful,
there continues to
be a need for Revision Joint
Replacement Surgery in
cases where the prosthesis
has loosened, the bearing
surfaces have worn,
or a patient has sustained
trauma with associated
fracture adjacent to the hip
or knee joint. These procedures
can be quite involved
and require experience
in dealing with the complex
issues that arise intra
operatively.”
brought in as the VC?
I knew what I have to do for the university. I
have been in this university for the last 30 years
as a student, faculty and now the VC of this institution.
Therefore, I know the requirement of the
students and faculty. I have to give back what this
university has given me. If you see the equipments
and infrastructure, what I have given is the best. I
make it a point that whenever I get the time I visit
the lab. I prefer the laboratory more than this position.
I would definitely rate my university the best.
You are one of the leading chemists
in the country. Can you tell us your
plans?
After retiring as the VC I will have my own area
of interest. I will be independent. For now Madras
University, National Institute of Singapore (NIS)
and another Chinese professor would like to work
on the cancer treating molecules in the area of Biotech.
I haven’t accepted the offer yet.
How different is the education system
in the country when compared with
other countries?
In most of the countries, education is a serious
issue; here it’s a little casual. We cannot improve
BMTC plans to extend
Bengaluru: To cope with
the following the extension
of nightlife deadlines
and yielding to the
demand for extension
of bus services till late
in the night, Bengaluru
Metropolitan Transport
Corporation (BMTC) is
planning to operate buses
weeks.
A senior official of
BMTC has said that the
Yeshwantpur, Kengeri,
Jigani, Hoskote and other
places.
There are already 62
buses catering to these
areas and recently, 10
more buses were added
charging one-and-half
times the bus fare for
those buses catering to
service after 10 pm.
The official said,
though the public commute
till 1 am in areas
like Majestic, Railway
Station and Shivajinagar,
there are no BMTC bus
services. People arriving
in the city late in the
night and those returning
home from offices are
deprived of BMTC bus facilities
and are forced to
either travel by autorickshaws
or cabs, the official
added. There was a petition
filed with Change.
org wherein more than
98% of the 15,000 people
who signed the petition
voted for BMTC services
to be run till 1 am.
Recently, BMTC introduced
as a nation unless education is given importance.
Foreign countries respect intelligence they respect
any kind of job you do. That is why they are leading.
Here in our country there is a lot of politics and
that is why the talent of each individual isn’t channelized
in the right direction.
You have co-authored five books, how
did that happen?
It just happened and I lent my support and
co-authored books since the past two years. Recently
we have published book on organic chemistry.
To be honest, it is very difficult to write books.
Who inspired you? Whom would you
thank?
Earlier days my teachers encouraged me recommended
me to read more books. They had a big
hand in supporting me and encouraging me to aim
higher. And none of them discouraged me. They
used to force my father to send me to school and
not the field. My mother was my primary support
system. She used to quarrel with my father and
make sure I was sent to school. Her support and
blessings has brought me here.
Centenary celebrations were organized on
grand scale. People said you’re the right man at the
right time at the right place for making that event
happen. How do you react to this?
University of Mysuru is a 100-year-old university.
We had invited the president of India, Pranab
Mukherjee andPrime MinisterNarendraModi to inaugurate
the event. No university till now had 10
Nobel laureates invited, that’s the pride we hold.
The then HRD Minister SmritiIrani was present at
the event.
For the next person who would be
stepping into your shoes what will be
your advice to him/her?
I do not know whether he/she will listen
to me or not but whoever comes has to do a
better job than what I have done. If not then
I atleast hope they do not spoil my university
and the atmosphere.
Jagadish Shettar demands
govt to withdraw cases
against Mahadayi agitators
Bengaluru: Leader of Opposition
in the Assembly
Jagadish Shettar on Thursday
demanded the state
government to withdraw
cases against Mahadayi agitators
without any preconditions.
Speaking with media persons,
Jagadish Shettar said
the police have registered
cases against the farmers
for demanding the government
to implement Kalasa
Banduri project aimed for
supplying drinking water
to North Karantaka. “The
innocent farmers are made
to attend the court. I want
the government to withdraw
cases against such
farmers immediately. The
police have registered false
cases against 187 farmers
during the agitation. I want
the state government to
withdraw all these cases,’’
Jagadish Shettar said.
He demanded the state
government to make senior
police officer Raghavendra
Auradkar’s report public.
It may be recalled the state
government had directed
Raghavendra Auradkar
to probe police atrocities
on farmers and villagers
during Kalasa Banduri agitation
and submit a report.
He also demanded the
state government to withdraw
cases registered
against Kannada activists
for participating in protest
during Cauvery crisis in
Bengaluru. “The police have
registered cases against innocent
people and Kannada
activists. I want the police
to withdraw all these cases
and the release those who
are in the prison,’’ he said.
BJP MLA Suresh Kumar
writes letter to Siddramaiah
Bengaluru: Bharatiya Janata
Party MLA S Suresh Kumar
on Thursday appealed
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah
not to go ahead with the proposed
steel flyover between
Basaveshwara Circle and
Hebbal due to the strong opposition
from public.
Suresh Kumar, in a letter
to the chief minister, said
that any government should
be sensitive, accountable,
responsive and transparent
but in this case, all these
essential qualities of administration
are conspicuously
absent. “There are many
reasons for the opposition
of the proposed steel flyover.
One of the reasons is
that there has been no public
hearing on this massive
project involving nearly Rs
1800 crore. The other reason
is that details of this
project not made public.
Many judgments of Supreme
Court have ordered that
public hearing is necessary
on any public project involving
a huge amount of money.
In fact there are very easy
alternative solutions to ease
traffic on Bellary Road that
has been studied by these
concerned activists but their
voice is not reaching the
authorities because of the
vested interests involved in
building the steel flyover,’’
Suresh Kumar said.

in key positions
a decision which comes in
wake of a controversy over
certain appointments in
the PSUs in the Industrial
Department.
The decision in this regard
was taken at a cabinet
meeting chaired by Chief
The cabinet also entrusted
Chief Secretary S
with regard to the appointments
which have become
controversial.
“This is to prevent nepotism
In the backdrop of Prime
Minister Narendra Modi’s
Dussehra rally in Lucknow,
Shiv Sena said the celebration
of the festival in Uttar
Pradesh was an attempt by
BJP to consolidate votes in
the name of Ram temple for
the forthcoming Assembly
elections.
At the same time, the ruling
alliance partner sought
to know what prevents BJP
from making use of its absolute
majority in the Lok
Sabha to start construction
of the temple in Ayodhya
instead of just engaging in
sloganeering on the issue.
“The Prime Minister
twice said the slogan of ‘Jai
Shree Ram’ while speaking
in Lucknow and thereby
sounded the poll bugle
for the state. What impact
this sloganeering is going
to have will be seen in the
near future. But, the fact is
that the UP polls are a matter
of life and death for BJP,”
an editorial in Sena mouthpiece
‘Saamana’ said.
It said Modi’s act of
performing ‘Ganga aarti’
(in Varanasi) soon after
becoming the PM led to
enthusiasm among party
workers and believers of
Hindutva. It was also significant
that he was the first
PM to do so.
“The whole idea behind
celebrating Dussehra in
Lucknow and raising the
slogan of ‘Jai Shree Ram’
was to garner votes in the
name of constructing a
Ram temple in the upcoming
UP polls,” it said.
“It (BJP) hopes that even
if the temple is not constructed,
the lotus would at
least bloom,” the Sena said,
adding, the BJP should once
and for all announce how
much more politics it wants
to play over the issue of
Ram temple.
“You have 280 seats in
the Lok Sabha and along
with other parties like
Sena, you have 300 plus
seats. If a Ram temple is not
constructed now, when will
it be?” it asked.
“Don’t just engage in
sloganeering but start
construction of the
temple and the Shiv Sena
will help you, because
it was the Sena which
had brought down
the dome of the Babri
Masjid,” it said.(PTI)
The Bombay High Court
has refused to interfere
with the decision of authorities
to compulsorily
retire a junior telecom officer
in Mahanagar Telephone
Nigam Ltd after a
departmental inquiry held
him guilty in a case of loss
of telephone cables.
“No case has been made
out by the petitioner to
cause interference by this
(High) court in exercise
of its writ jurisdiction…
the petition is dismissed,”
Justices Naresh Patil and
Prakash Naik said in a recent
judgement.
The petitioner, Prakash
Tyagi, joined services as
Junior Telecom Officer
in the erstwhile Mumbai
Telephone in 1979. By an
order dated February 4,
1988, he was placed under
suspension, as a departmental
enquiry was ordered
on account of missing
600 metres of cable.
The charges mentioned
in the charge-sheet issued
in 1989 related to loss of
telephone cable and other
related matters. An
FIR was lodged with Juhu
Police Station on February
9, 1988 in connection with
the incident.
The department alleged
that the petitioner, while
working as Junior Telecom
Officer (JTO), had not
laid cables of about 600
metres, but created record
showing that he had
executed the work. The
un-utilised stock of cable
thus remained unaccounted
for, according to the
department.
The petitioner denied
the charges levelled
against him. An Enquiry
Officer was appointed who
held a probe and filed a
report on January 7, 1991,
holding the petitioner
guilty of missing cables
mentioned in charges 1 to
4 in the chargesheet, while
exonerating him from two
other charges.
Petitioner’s contention
was that the Enquiry Officer
has not given any
reason as to why he had
recorded finding of guilt
in respect of charges 1 to 4
in the chargesheet. Thereafter,
the disciplinary
authority passed an order
on August 17, 1995,
compulsorily retiring the
petitioner.
The petitioner filed
an appeal on October 18,
1995, before Appellate Authority
against the penalty
of compulsory retirement
imposed on him but it was
rejected in August 1997.
He had argued that he
was acquitted by a Magistrate
in March 1996 after
a full trial. He then filed a
review petition which too
was rejected by the Competent
Authority in 1998.
The aggrieved petitioner
moved the Central
Administrative Tribunal
(CAT) which rejected his
plea. He then challenged
the CAT order in the
High Court.
The High Court was of
the view that all the authorities
had concurrently
held that the charges
levelled against the petitioner
were proved. The
HC further held that the
CAT in detail had scanned
the material referred to in
the charges, considered
the pleadings of the parties,
the stand taken by the
petitioner and had upheld
the findings of the Enquiry
Officer. Therefore, the
bench refused to give relief
to the petitioner and
dismissed his petition.
CBI registered three
cases to probe incidents of
violence and arson during
the Jat quota agitation in
Rohtak in February, including
the burning of residence
of Haryana Finance
Minister Capt Abhimanyu.
CBI spokesperson said
the agency took over investigation
in these cases
on the request of Haryana
government and further
orders from Department of
Personnel and Training.
“Allegations include attacking,
looting of weapons
of the police guard,
attempting to murder the
family members and burning
down the residence
of Finance Minister in the
government of Haryana,”
she said.
One of the cases registered
by the agency relates
to alleged arson at the residence
of Abhimanyu on
February 19 while another
is related to assault and
looting of weapons from
the company of BSF and
Haryana Police by the rioters.
The rioters had allegedly
attempted to murder the
troops while they were on
law and order duty at Delhi
bypass, Rohtak, the spokesperson
said.
“A large number of persons
were allegedly injured
& some of them grievously
in these violent attacks. It
was further alleged that
property worth crores
of rupees was burnt and
weapons of police guards
were looted by the agitators
who were demanding
reservation for a certain
community in Haryana.
These cases have been
transferred by the Government
of Haryana to CBI,” the
spokesperson said. (PTI)

Russia says
Damascus embassy
targeted in mortar
attack, no staff hurt
The Russian embassy in
Damascus was targeted in a
mortar attack on Wednesday,
the Russian Foreign Ministry
said, condemning what it
called “a terrorist attack” in
the Syrian capital.
One of the mortar shells,
fired from a district controlled
by rebels, exploded
close to the guard post in
front of the embassy, while
another detonated near the
entrance to the consular office,
the ministry said in a
statement.
The embassy compound
was strewn with shrapnel,
but none of embassy staff
were hurt, it said. It said material
damage was being assessed.
“We confirm that Russia’s
consistent policy of uncompromising
fighting against
terrorists in Syria will be
continued,” the ministry said.
Three South
Koreans found shot
dead in Philippines
The bodies of three South
Koreans with gunshot wounds
to the head have been found in
the Philippines, a South Korean
foreign ministry official said on
Thursday, the latest in a string
of killings of Koreans in the
southeast Asian nation.
Philippine President Rodrigo
Duterte has waged a ruthless
anti-crime campaign since
taking office on June 30 in
which more than 3,600 people
have died in police operations
and alleged vigilante killings.
The bodies of two men and
a woman, all older than 40 and
all with gunshot wounds to the
head, were found on Tuesday
in Bacolor outside the capital,
Manila, the ministry official
said by telephone.
Chief of police at the town
of Bacolor, Sonia Alvarez, said
the deaths were unlikely to be
related to drugs and instead
looked like a crime of passion
or indebtedness.
The case takes to six the tally
of South Koreans found dead
this year in the Philippines,
where more than ten South Korean
citizens have been killed
each year since 2013, South
Korean media said.
Concerned about king’s health,
Thais flock to Bangkok hospital
About 300 people gathered
at a Bangkok hospital
on Thursday where
Thailand’s King Bhumibol
Adulyadej, the world’s
longest reigning monarch,
is in an unstable condition
as the government urged
jittery stock market investors
to ignore rumours.
The palace said in a
statement late on Wednesday
the king’s health had
“overall not yet stabilized”
and the 88-year-old was
on a ventilator and battling
a new infection.
It followed a statement
on Sunday saying the king
was in an unstable condition
after receiving haemodialysis
treatment.
Well-wishers gathered
on Thursday outside
Siriraj Hospital, which
is near Bangkok’s Chao
Phraya river.
Some wore yellow, the
king’s colour, and others
donned pink, a colour
they believe will bring the
king an improvement in
his health. Some prayed.
“I was worried so I came
here to see for myself,”
said housewife Thornpan
Tornueng, 67.
“This evening I will take
part in chanting for the
king.”
District police commander
Rithee Visetkamin
said more people
were expected to gather
at the hospital through
the day.
The king has long been
seen as a unifying figure
in Thailand, which
has grappled with political
uncertainty in recent
years. His health, which is
watched closely, is a sensitive
subject.
Strict lese-majeste laws
mean public discussions
of his health and any succession
plans are punishable
by lengthy jail terms.
Investors in the Stock
Exchange of Thailand have
sold shares since Sunday’s
statement from the Royal
Household Bureau on the
king’s health.
Putin rejects accusations of
meddling in U.S. election
Russian President Vladimir Putin insisted
on Wednesday his country was
not involved in an effort to influence
the U.S. presidential election even as
WikiLeaks released another trove of internal
documents from Hillary Clinton’s
campaign.
Last week, the U.S. government formally
accused Russia of launching a
hacking campaign to “interfere with the
U.S. election process.”
Clinton’s campaign, which has
charged the Kremlin is trying to help Republican
Donald Trump win the White
House on Nov. 8, took its allegations a
step further on Tuesday when John Podesta,
chairman of the Democratic nominee’s
campaign, accused the Trump
campaign of colluding with Russia.
At events in Florida, Trump said he
had nothing to do with Putin or Russia.
“I promise you, I don’t have any business
deals with Russia,” Trump said at a
rally in Lakeland.
In Moscow, Putin said nothing in the
hacking scandal is in Russia’s interests
and accused all sides in the U.S. presidential
campaign of misusing rhetoric
about Russia for their own purposes.
“They started this hysteria, saying
this (hacking) is in Russia’s interests,
but this has nothing to do with Russia’s
interests,” Putin told a business forum.
Putin said his government would
work with whoever won the U.S. election,
“if, of course, the new U.S. leader
wishes to work with our country.”
WikiLeaks, the organisation started
by Julian Assange that publishes leaked
information on the internet, this week
released thousands of emails from Podesta’s
email account and has not said
how it obtained them. Last week, it
posted excerpts from Clinton’s private
speeches to banking and financial firms.
The Clinton campaign has not confirmed
the authenticity of the messages.
The leaks, coming as the election
campaign reaches the final stretch, have
the potential to embarrass the Clinton
camp. In recent days, however, Trump’s
own campaign has been in deeper trouble
over the emergence of a 2005 video
in which Trump bragged about groping
women. Many Republican elected officials
have turned their back on him and
Clinton’s lead in national opinion polls
has increasedeft
Trump escalated his attacks on U.S.
House of Representatives Speaker Paul
Ryan on Wednesday, deepening a fracture
in the Republican Party.
Clinton, a former secretary of state,
has repeatedly accused Trump of having
overly friendly ties with Putin and
Russia.
She has noted that Trump’s foreign
policies have tended to align with Russian’s
interests, whether it has been
questioning NATO’s role in defending
Eastern Europe, failing to recognise
Russia’s intrusion into Ukraine, and supporting
Russia’s actions in Syria.
Trump, a New York businessman
who has never previously run for office,
has shifted his policies on a wide range
of issues, from taxes to the minimum
wage to immigration during his White
House campaign but his statements on
Russia have been consistent. His friendly
stance toward Moscow departs from
the views of many prominent Republicans.
During a presidential debate on
Sunday, Trump publicly disagreed with
his own vice presidential choice, Mike
Pence, who had called for a more hawkish
approach toward Russia.
“I DON’T KNOW PUTIN”
At that debate, Trump questioned
whether Russia was behind the hacks,
as the U.S. government has asserted.
And on Wednesday, during a rally in
Ocala, Florida, Trump echoed those remarks.
“Have you ever noticed, anything
that goes wrong they blame Russia?”
Trump told the crowd. “They always
blame Russia and then they says Donald
Trump is friends . . . I don’t know Putin,
folks. What the hell do I have to do with
Putin?”
Trump has said that as president he
would seek warmer relations with Russia
and that it would be in the United
States’ best interests to seek Russia’s
help to defeat Islamic State.
“Trump is the most pro-Russian presidential
candidate ever,” said Max Boot,
much as 6.9 percent on
Wednesday to its lowest
since March 1, but recovered
to close down 2.5
percent, its lowest since
the end of May.
It was down 2.1 percent
by the mid-day break on
Thursday.
Deputy Prime Minister
Somkid Jatusripitak said
he had asked the Securities
and Exchange Commission
(SEC) to investigate
rumours that had
been affecting the market.
“I will tell the SEC to
investigate who spread
the news and who caused
stocks to fall. Foreigners
are waiting to pick up
stocks and Thais are selling
them,” Somkid told reporters.
“I don’t think it’s beneficial
to do that because
this is an important time
for the country and we
should not undermine
ourselves.”
“Don’t listen to rumours.
Please only listen
to the government,”
he added.
The government on
Wednesday urged people
to ignore rumours
on social media and wait
for official announcements.
[Reuters]
a senior fellow for national security
studies at the Council of Foreign Relations.
“Putin no doubt sees a once-ina-lifetime
opportunity to reorient U.S.
foreign policy in his direction by electing
Trump.”
A Russian ultra-nationalist ally of
Putin who is known for his fiery rhetoric
said Trump was the only person
able to de-escalate dangerous tensions
between Moscow and Washington, and
predicted nuclear war if Clinton were
elected.
“Relations between Russia and the
United States can’t get any worse. The
only way they can get worse is if a war
starts,” Vladimir Zhirinovsky, a flamboyant
veteran lawmaker, told.
Clinton campaign chairman Podesta
said on Tuesday the FBI was investigating
a “criminal hack” of his emails, and
he tied the Trump campaign to the leaks
by suggesting that a former Trump adviser,
Roger Stone, had advance warning
of the hacks.
The Trump campaign has not responded
to the allegation about Stone,
but Trump has denied any coordination
with the Russian government to embarrass
Clinton.
He has, however, made clear he
supports WikiLeaks’ efforts. “I love
WikiLeaks,” he said at a rally in Pennsylvania
on Tuesday.
The United States has an ongoing
criminal investigation into Assange’s
publishing of classified material. Clinton
has been a fierce critic of Assange, who
remains at the Ecuadorean embassy in
London where he sought refuge in 2012
to avoid possible extradition to Sweden.
Last week, the Office of the Director
of National Intelligence and Department
of Homeland Security said the government
was confident the hacks of Democratic
political groups and campaign
officials originated from high levels of
the Russian government.
The White House on Tuesday promised
a “proportional” response to Russia
over the hacks.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei
Lavrov told CNN the United States has
offered no proof of his government’s involvement,
and suggested Moscow was
unconcerned about possible reprisals.
“If they decided to do something, let
them do it,” Lavrov said. ( Reuters)
India rejects Pak’s reference to
women’s condition in Kashmir
United Nations: Innocent Indian women
have suffered for long due to the persistent
terrorist acts perpetrated by “proxies of Pakistan”,
India has said as it strongly rejecting references
by Islamabad to conditions of women
in Kashmir.
Counsellor Mayank Joshi in India’s Permanent
Mission to the UN here “completely”
rejected the “baseless allegations” made by
Pakistan about women in Jammu and Kashmir,
saying “in fact” it is the innocent Indian
women who have for “long suffered due to the
persistent terrorist acts perpetrated by proxies
of Pakistan.”
Joshi exercised India’s Right of Reply after
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s Special Envoy
on Kashmir Shezra Mansab Ali Khan referred
to the conditions of women in Kashmir
during an October 11 session on Advancement
of Women in the General Assembly’s
Third Committee, which focuses on social and
humanitarian issues.
Khan said armed conflict and illegal occupation
accentuates the plight of women.
Citing the situation in Kashmir, she said
“thousands of women have fallen victims to
brutal oppression and occupation.
Countless others have suffered rape and sexual
abuse, the worst and most traumatic form of
violence.”
Joshi said it is “ironical” that a country
that has “institutionalised the oppression” of
women in its society including through “medieval
draconian laws is making claims about
the rights of women in a pluralistic democracy
such as India.”
He said Pakistan will be well served to
“seriously examine” what ails its women and
hampers their advancement.
Pakistan has been constantly raising the
Kashmir issue at various platforms in the UN,
including in the General Assembly and its various
committees that deal with diverse issues
such as disarmament and decolonisation.
Joshi asserted that India will not respond
to the “lies and deceit” Pakistan has been
resorting to at the world body to pursue a
diplomacy of “hate”.
“We are aware of Pakistan s cynical attempts
to pursue diplomacy of hate through
lies and deceit. We do not intend to further
respond to such misguided and futile efforts,”
he said.
A Pakistani official however again took the
floor to exercise the Right of Reply to Joshi s
remarks, saying no amount of “obfuscation”
could hide the alleged human rights violations
in Kashmir.
He said Jammu and Kashmir was an “internationally
recognised” dispute and Pakistan
rejected “any insinuations to equate the legitimate
struggles of the Kashmiri people with
acts of terrorism. [PTI]
Indian faces threat from inside,
not outside: Shivshankar Menon
Washington: The real
threats to India are “internal”
and emanate from
communal and social violence,
not from outside forces
such as Pakistan or China,
former national security
advisor Shivshankar Menon
has said.
Asked if Pakistan or China
pose an existential threat
to India, Menon said: “No”.
“In terms of national
security, I think the real
threats are internal,” he
told.
“There’s no existential
threat to India’s existence
today externally, unlike in
the 50s or when we were
formed. And for many years
till late 60s there were actual
internal separatist
threats, not any more. I
think that we have actual
dealt with,” Menon said.
His long career in public
service spans diplomacy,
national security, and
India’s relations with its
neighbours and major global
powers. Menon served as
national security advisor to
Prime Minister Manmohan
Singh from January 2010 to
May 2014.
Menon’s first book post
retirement - ‘Choices: Inside
the making of India’s
Foreign Policy’ - is all set
to hit book stores globally
next week.
Asked to elaborate on
what he meant by internal
threats, he said: “If there are
real threats to India, to the
idea of India, India’s integrity,
today they actually come
from within the country.”
“If you look at violence
in India, deaths from terrorism,
from left wing extremism,
declined steadily
throughout this 21st century
until 2014-2015. Even
now the basic trend for terrorism,
left wing extremism
is down. What has increased
is since 2012, communal violence,
social violence, internal
violence has increase.
That is something we need
to find a way in dealing
with,” Menon said.
“This is not a traditional
law and order problem,
which our traditional instruments,
the police, the
states know how to deal
with. You look at violence
against women, communal,
caste violence, if you
look at those firms of violence,
these are all a result
of tremendous social and
economic change of uprooting
of population, urbanization...
various forms of
change, which we still need
to learn how to deal with,”
he said.
Menon said those are
the threats, which in the
long run, has a “potential to
make real difference”.
“India has changed. It is
normal. It happens to most
societies where there is
change. But you also have to
learn new ways of dealing
with,” he said and attributed
the new threats to the rapid
and fast development of the
country.
When asked that some
people attributed this to
the BJP coming to power,
Menon said even that is a
consequence of the change
that the Indian society is
undergoing now.
Menon previously served
as India’s foreign secretary
from 2006 to 2009
and as ambassador and
high commissioner to Israel
from 1995-1997, Sri
Lanka (1997-2000), China
(2000-2003) and Pakistan
(2003-2006). [PTI]

China assures wider market
access for Indian products
New Delhi: China has
agreed to look into India’s
concern expressed over providing
greater market access
to its domestic products to
bridge the widening gulf
between the two countries
over trade market.
The issue was raised and
discussed in detail during
the meeting held here in
Capital city between Commerce
and Industry Minister
Nirmala Sitharaman
and Wang Shouwen, Vice
Minister for Ministry of Finance
and Commerce, China,
sources said.
In a statement released
by the commerce ministry
said that the Chinese
Vice- Minister assured that
China would act on the concerns
expressed by India
regarding market access for
Indian goods in the Chinese
markets.”
According to sources,
Sitharaman raised concerns
over the widening trade deficit
between the two countries
during the meeting in
a strong voice. Meanwhile,
both the leaders exchanged
notes on trade and commerce
and agreed that the
“mounting bilateral trade
deficit has been a cause for
concern for India” which
seeks greater market access
for its goods for a long-term
sustainable trade relationship,
a statement said.
Sitharaman requested
expeditious clearances for
import of Indian rice besides
a Green Channel for import
of Indian pharmaceutical
products to China especially
those which already have
USFDA and EUFDA accreditation,
it added.
She also requested the
Chinese Vice- Minister to
consider demonstration of
IT/ITeS projects for Indian
companies - which have
acquired global acclaim.
“Sitaraman expressed concerns
at the long drawn procedures
for clearances which
tend to frustrate the Indian
companies seeking business
opportunities in China,”
it added.
Adding further Sitharaman
asked for ‘buying
missions to India to source
amongst other things, Indian
tobacco and oil meals.
On the other hand, the
Chinese Minister informed
that China has quickened
the pace of granting
clearances to Indian pharmaceutical
companies
for import of the pharma
products, it said.
FOOD & TRAVEL
New food norms to open up
value-added market
The Food Safety & Standards
Authority of India
(FSSAI) is planning to
come out with new guidelines
on fortifying rice,
milk, wheat flour, edible
oil and salt soon as existing
food standards require
salt to be fortified with
iodine.
According to the draft
of guidelines circulated
among stakeholders, 850-
1,100 parts per million
iron can now be added to
salt in order to increase
the level of micronutrients.
It is believed that
the move acquires significance
since it opens up
the value-added market
for branded commodity
players.
The final guidelines are
expected to be released by
the end of October or in
the first week of November,
said sources. The authoritative
board, FSSAI,
recently held a food summit
in Delhi to discuss the
matter in detail. During
the special meeting, FS-
SAI’s Chief Executive Officer
Pawan Kumar Agarwal
had said the guidelines
would help address the
issue of malnutrition,”
he said.
Companies, scientists
and researchers who are
into the business attended
the meeting and said to
have shared their piece of
mind over the issue. Few
more from the companies
are expected to participation
in the two-day summit
to discuss food fortification.
“We will study the
guidelines to see how we
can come out with food
that fits the requirements,”
said S Nagarajan, managing
director, Mother Dairy
Fruit & Vegetables.
R S Sodhi, managing
director of Gujarat Co-operative
Milk Marketing
Federation, which manufactures
the Amul brand of
dairy products, welcomed
the development.
Toyota, Suzuki may drive together
Japan’s automobile giants
Toyota Motor Corp
and Suzuki Motor Corp
said they plan to explore a
possible partnership, citing
technological challenges
and the need to keep up
with consolidation in the
global auto industry.
Toyota invests hugely in
research & development
(R&D) on automated driving
functions and artificial
intelligence for mobility
purposes, while cost-conscious
Suzuki, which specialises
in affordable compact
cars, has not yet made
any announcement on major
strategic plans in order
to stay in competent in
new world of automotive
technologies.
Meanwhile, both the
companies said that they
had just begun discussing
possible cooperation, so
nothing was decided about
areas in which they might
collaborate.
However Osamu Suzuki,
chairman of Suzuki said in
a news conference that his
firm was struggling to keep
pace with the breakneck
speed of R&D, “R&D in the
auto industry is changing
rapidly. The future looks
perilous.” A partnership
between Toyota and Suzuki
would be the latest in an
increasingly consolidating
auto industry. Nissan Motor
Co. in May announced
it was planning to take
a controlling stake in
embattled Mitsubishi
Motors Corp.
A partnership Suzuki
had with Germany’s Volkswagen
ended on a sour
note last year, after the
German carmaker accused
it of violating their pact by
agreeing a diesel engine
deal with Italy’s Fiat.
Toyota completed a buyout
of Daihatsu Motors earlier
this year. The world’s
largest automaker by vehicle
sales in 2015 said last
week it will set up a company
with Daihatsu to focus
on emerging markets.
Suzuki,
Japan’s
fourth-largest automaker,
competes fiercely with
Daihatsu in the domestic
market and dominates the
Indian market through its
majority stake in Maruti
Suzuki India. Both firms
concentrate on smaller
vehicles.
South Africa sweep Australia
despite Warner heroics
Cape Town: David Warner hit a magnificent
century for Australia but could not prevent
South Africa from completing a clean sweep
by winning the fifth and final one-day international
by 31 runs at Newlands.
Warner hit 173 off 136 balls but received
scant support from his teammates as Australia,
chasing South Africa’s 327 for eight, were
bowled out for 296.
South Africa won all five matches in the series,
the first time Australia have suffered such
a beating in a five-game bilateral series. Australia
will retain their number one ranking in
one-day internationals, however, with South
Africa two points behind in second place.
“Davey was phenomenal but the rest of us
didn’t stand up,” said Australian captain Steve
Smith. “Credit to South Africa, we’ve been outplayed
in all the games.”
Rilee Rossouw hit 122 and JP Duminy made
Fury vacates world heavyweight
titles to focus on recovery
Tyson Fury’s troubled
11th month reign as world
heavyweight champion
came to an end on Thursday
when the British boxer announced
he would be vacating
his WBO and WBA titles
“to fully focus on his medical
treatment and recovery”.
The 28-year-old has
not fought since beating
Ukrainian Wladimir Klitschko
to win the titles in November
2015 and has since
admitted taking cocaine to
battle depression.
Fury has twice called off
a fight against Klitschko, in
July because of an ankle injury
and last month for an
unspecified medical condition,
and also briefly retired
from the sport.
“I feel that it is only fair
and right and for the good
of boxing to keep the titles
active and allow the other
contenders to fight for the
vacant belts that I proudly
won and held as the undefeated
heavyweight champion
of the world ...” Fury said
in statement released by his
promoter Mick Hennessy.
“I won the titles in the
ring and I believe that they
should be lost in the ring,
but I’m unable to defend
at this time and I have taken
the hard and emotional
decision to now officially
vacate my treasured world
titles
“(I) wish the next in-line
contenders all the very best
as I now enter another big
challenge in my life which I
know, like against Klitschko,
I will conquer.”
Tyson’s points victory
over Klitschko in Duesseldorf,
Germany at the end of
November last year was one
of the biggest upsets in the
long history of heavyweight
boxing.
It was a first defeat
for Klitschko in 11 years
and the now 40-year-old
Ukrainian immediately demanded
a re-match.
Klitschko expressed his
frustration after Fury called
off a fight for the second
time last month and last
week accused the Briton of
“dragging boxing through
the mud”.
At the start of October,
ESPN reported Fury had
tested positive for cocaine,
citing a leaked letter sent by
the Voluntary Anti-Doping
Agency (VADA) .A couple of
days later, Fury announced
his retirement in an expletive-laden
tweet, only to
abruptly reverse the decision
hours later, saying he
planned to carry on fighting.
In an interview with Rolling
Stone published on Oct.
4, Fury admitted to drinking
heavily and using cocaine
to help him deal with
depression, saying he had
been diagnosed as “manic
depressive”.
In the interview, he denied
ever taking banned
substances before he fought
and said his cocaine use had
started only after he beat
Klitschko.
Fury has also been
charged with an anti-doping
rule violation by UK
Anti-Doping after a urine
sample from February 2015
- nine months before his victory
over Klitschko - showed
traces of the banned stimulant
nandrolone. He denies
any wrongdoing.
Hennessy described the
decision to vacate the titles
as “heartbreaking” and Peter
Fury, the boxer’s uncle
and trainer, said he was convinced
his nephew, who has
a professional record of 25-
0, would return to the ring.
“Tyson will be back
stronger from this
and I will make sure,
no matter what we
have to deal with, Tyson
not only comes back
but will reclaim
what’s rightfully his,”
he said. [Reuters]
73 as South Africa piled up the third-highest
total in a one-day international at Newlands,
making them firm favourites on a ground
where the highest successful run chase was
258.
Warner was dropped by wicket keeper Quinton
de Kock off Kagiso Rabada when he had 11.
He went on to play a thrilling innings, hitting
24 fours, and Australia remained in with a
chance of victory until he was ninth out with
the total on 288, run out by a throw from the
point boundary by Imran Tahir, desperate for
a risky second run in order to keep the strike.
Leg-spinner Tahir had earlier taken two
wickets in his first over, ending an opening
stand of 72 between Warner and Aaron Finch,
then bowling Smith two balls later.
South African captain Faf du Plessis paid
tribute to Warner for an “incredible innings”
but said South Africa deserved their series triumph.
“At different times different guys stood
up. Whatever Australia threw at us we had the
answers. I’m very proud of the team.”
Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head both made
35 but Australia were not able to stage a big
partnership such as the 178 off 170 balls posted
by Rossouw and Duminy after South Africa
had been struggling at 52 for three.[PTI]
Stokes believes in-form
England can top ODI rankings
England will climb to
the top of the one-day international
(ODI) cricket
world rankings if they can
maintain their fine form in
the format, all-rounder Ben
Stokes said after the side
completed a series victory
in Bangladesh.
Stokes played a key role
with an unbeaten 47 as England
won the deciding third
match against the hosts in
Chittagong on Wednesday
to wrap up a third successive
one-day series triumph,
having beaten Sri Lanka and
Pakistan at home earlier
this year.
England are currently
fifth in the ODI rankings, behind
Australia, South Africa,
New Zealand and India.
“It’s really exciting. If
we carry on like this we’ll
achieve our target of being
world number one,” Stokes,
who was named the man of
the series, told Sky Sports.
England’s loss to Bangladesh
in Adelaide, which
knocked them out of the
2015 ODI World Cup,
spurred a string of changes
to the national team set-up
and Stokes felt the squad
are starting to yield the dividends
of the strategy.
“The team we have had
together for the last 18
months have been playing
unbelievable cricket,” the
25-year-old added.
With skipper Eoin
Morgan sitting out the
Bangladesh series over
security concerns, wicketkeeper-batsman
Jos Buttler
was tasked with leading a
young and inexperienced
squad against a side that had
won their six previous home
ODI series.
“Me and Jos work quite
well. We’re quite aggressive
in how we want to play our
cricket, not just with the
bat and the ball, but with
field placings,” Stokes, who
was vice-captain for the
series, said.
Morgan and influential
opening batsman Alex Hales
are expected to return to the
squad when England travel
to India for their next threematch
ODI series in January.
Hamilton misses Barcelona
test to rest sore foot
Triple Formula One
world champion Lewis
Hamilton has pulled out
of a tyre test in Barcelona
to rest a sore foot ahead
of next week’s U.S. Grand
Prix in Austin, his Mercedes
team said on Thursday.
The Briton had been due
originally to test the 2017
Pirelli tyres with a modified
2015 ‘mule’ car on
Wednesday but team mate
and championship leader
Nico Rosberg took on those
duties instead.
A team spokesman said
German reserve driver Pascal
Wehrlein, who races for
Manor, would stand in for
Hamilton on Thursday.
“Lewis had some discomfort
in his foot after
training on Tuesday,” he
said. “It was agreed he
wouldn’t test so he could
rest it and get physio to be
in good shape for Austin,
which he will be. No concerns
on that front.”
Hamilton is 33 points behind
Rosberg in the world
championship with four
races remaining, meaning
that even if he wins everyone
it will still not be
enough if Rosberg finishes
second each time.
The Briton won his third
title, and second with Mercedes,
at Austin’s Circuit
of the Americas last year
when Rosberg started on
pole but made a mistake
that gifted his team mate
the victory.
Rosberg, who is now
heading for his first title,
then went on to win the
three races after that in
Mexico, Brazil and Abu
Dhabi before starting the
new season with four successive
victories.
Both Hamilton and Rosberg
were at the team’s
Brackley headquarters and
Brixworth high performance
engine facility on
Tuesday, with the Briton
seen to be limping slightly
later in the afternoon.
Hamilton triggered a
media spat at the last race
in Japan when he was criticised
for playing around
with Snapchat during a
news conference, taking
pictures of fellow drivers
and complaining of the boring
format of the event.
He then walked out of a
media briefing on Saturday
and hurriedly left the circuit
after the race, flying back to
Europe with non-executive
chairman Niki Lauda and
Mercedes motorsport head
Toto Wolff.
The team said then that
Hamilton had to be back in
Europe as soon as possible
to be ready for Wednesday
testing. [Reuters]
Chaitanya enjoying double
success of Premam
Now that both Samantha
and Naga Chaitanya
have come out in
open about the relationship,
the golden beauty
have slowly begun to
uncover their private
pictures. As Sam is kind
of enjoying her holiday
period by not signing
any films, she is often
seen with Chaitanya in
the recent day. Following
pictures from their
Sunburn outing, a new
funny image of the dazzling
pair is out.
The recent tweets and
pictures from Samantha
clearly proves she’s in a
really happy phase now.
Sam hints how much
she is loving her life to
the completest these
days. On the sidelines of
Premam success. Not to
forget, Samantha recently
wished him before the
release of film.
The much-in-love
couple would get
hitched next year and
in the meanwhile, we
may get to more such
pictures on Internet.
In next few days, Naga
Chaitanya will kick start
his next project with
Soggade Chinni Nayana
director Kalyan Krishna
and it’s said to be a family
entertainer.
Mallu Beauty with
Young Malayalam
actress Anupama
Parameswaran looks to
join the long list of Mallu
actresses who have and
are ruling the Telugu film
industry.
Anupama has done
only two Telugu films till
date but she is already
rated one of the most
promising talents. She
began her filmy career
with stupendous Malayalam
hit film ‘Premam’.
After watching this romantic
drama, top Telugu
director Trivikram
immediately roped her
in to play a key role in his
directorial ‘A...Aa’. Anupama’s
possessive character
of Nagavalli was well
received and the film became
a big hit.
Next came the Telugu
remake of ‘Premam’
in which she reprised
her role from the original.
With this film also
becoming a success, Anupama
is branded as a
lucky lady. The recently
released teaser of Sharwanand’s
‘Shatamanam
Bhavathi’ looked promising
and since it was a Dil
Raju production venture,
there is very little doubt
for it to fail at box office.
‘Shivaay’ action will be
visual treat for everyone: Vir Das
It’s a known fact that
Sivakarthikeyan got a
little emotional during
Remo’s thanksgiving
meet which was held
on Wednesday. He also
said that few people are
trying to unsettle his
career though he never
mentioned who or what
they did.
On hearing about this,
Simbu took his Twitter
to register his support
for the Remo actor.
“Don’t worry Shiva .Not
only u, even i know who
they r and that’s what
they r good at .Hard
work is all that matters.
Leave the rest to god”.
the fabrics that are completely
breathable.
While, shedding more
light on their chic collection
one of the co-founders
of Love Gen, Nandita
said, “It is a collection for
the modern-day women,
who don’t have time to
dress up. So, they wear
something light and go
to work and then play it
up and go for a party.
Actor Vir Das is all
praise for the action sequences
in Ajay Devgn’s
upcoming film “Shivaay”.
“I think he (Ajay) has
been able to pull off the
story very well. I think
nobody is able to pull
off action the way Ajay
has done in ‘Shivaay’. It
will be a visual treat for
everyone,” Vir told the
media.
Vir was surprised
when Ajay offered him a
role in “Shivaay”.
“He (Ajay) called me
and said come to office.
His team of writers
narrated the film and I
liked it,” he said.
a “unique soul,”sources
said.
“It’s been devastating.
It doesn’t feel like
there’s any justice or
there’s no way of understanding
it, really.
time for his family.
They’re very dignified,
beautiful people.
a unique soul,” Jones
