for USA?
According to rumours, the
have been claims that he has
left for USA. If this is true, the
special investigating team
will have to handle the problem
of delivering court notice
to him.
OPPOSITION PARTIES CONTINUE
DHARNA IN ASSEMBLY
The day began with the
Opposition parties in the
Lower House continuing
their dharna in the Assembly
to press their demand
for the resignation of Bangalore
Development Minister
KJ George and also insisting
on the CBI probe in the entire
episode as the DySP had
alleged in a television interview
hours before ending
his life that the then Home
Minister, DGP Pranob Mohanty
and IGP Intelligence
A M Prasad must be held responsible,
if anything were
to happen to him.
The Opposition BJP and
JD(S) members, who staged
a night-long dharna in the
Karnataka State Legislative
Assembly on Wednesday
demanding the resignation
K J George over the suicide
of Mangaluru Deputy Superintendent
of Police M K
Ganapati, continued their
protest for the entire day on
Thursday. Members of both
SCHOOLS FAILING TO FULFILL RTE NORMS
TO LOSE RECOGNITION
Two renowned CBSE
schools in Mysuru may lose
their recognition as they
failed to fulfill admission
norms under Right to Education
(RTE) Act.
opposition parties resorted
to dharna in the Legislative
Council on Thursday, and in
the process forced the adjournment
of both houses of
State Legislature.
As the Assembly met, BJP
and JD(S) members entered
the well of the House and
shouted slogans against the
Siddaramaiah Government
after staging the overnight
dharna, which they had
launched yesterday, rejecting
the judicial probe announced
by the Chief Minister
during his reply to the
debate on the issue.
Refusing to give in to
the BJP’s demand for a CBI
probe, Siddaramaiah had
said the case would be
probed by a judicial commission
headed by a retired
High Court judge, even
while dismissing the call for
George’s resignation, saying
there was not even an iota of
evidence against him.
Shettar alleged that honest
officials had no security
under the Congress government
and demanded to
know why Siddaramaiah
was showing “special affection”
towards George.
Ganapathy (51) was
found hanging from a ceiling
fan in a room at a lodge in
Madikeri on July 7, prior to
which he gave an interview
to a local TV channel, saying
the minister and A M Prasad
(IG—Intelligence) and Pranab
Mohanty (IGP—Lokayukta)
would be responsible
“if anything happens
Kautilya Vidyalaya in
Datagalli and Jnanasarovar
international school in
Bhoogatahalli are listed in
the category for dereognition
and an FIR is likely to
be filed against them for
violating RTE guidelines. A
requisition has been sent to
the Directorate of Education
to prosecute the schools violating
RTE norms by the
District regulatory authority
which comes under the
Deputy Commissioner. The
CBSE schools which fall under
educations minister’s
home territory are likely to
lose recognition once the
orders are received from the
Directorate of education.
According to the Deputy
Director of Public Instruction
(DDPI) Basappa,
schools are supposed allot
25% of the seats under RTE
whereas the two private
CBSE schools have violated
the RTE guidelines. During
the previous five academic
years they have allotted only
one seat under RTE during
to me.”
Intervening as opposition
continued its protest, Law
Minister T B Jayachandra
said a judicial inquiry has
been ordered and one has to
wait for its findings. As the
ruckus continued, Speaker
K B Koliwad adjourned the
house for some time.
The Karnataka Legislative
Council was also adjourned
till tomorrow, following
a similar protest and
dharna by the Opposition
BJP and JD(S).
the years 2013 and 2014.
They had given false information
in the high court for
not allotting seats under
RTE. High court in its ruling
two days ago had taken the
Kautilya School to task and
asked them to get back only
after allotting the number of
seats under RTE. The court
had dismissed the school
petition and favoured the
government stand.
Jnanodaya school management
is trying to evade
derecognition by quoting
that their school being residential
type, need not follow
the guidelines. The authorities
are likely to register an
FIR in this case also.
TEMPLE AUTHORITIES URGE
VISITORS TO FOLLOW DRESS CODE
Shree Mangaladevi
temple has made a move
to put in place a ‘dress
code’ for temple visitors.
Though the temple authorities
say it is not compulsory,
the ‘A’ grade temple
under the Endowment
Department has displayed
a notice on its premises
asking devotees to follow
a ‘dress code’, but without
defining it.
P. Ramanath Hegde,
managing trustee of the
temple management committee,
said that there
was no compulsion for
devotees to wear a certain
dress, but the temple
expected them to cover
themselves fully. “However,
if anybody comes in a
short dress, he or she will
not be sent out,” he said,
adding that the purpose of
displaying the board was to
make devotees follow the
code “voluntarily”.
G.Hanumantha Kamath,
social activist and president
of Nagarika Hitarakshana
Samiti, Mangaluru,
said the temple had given
scope for “unnecessary exchange
of words between
the temple staff and devotees”.
Now the board had
created confusion among
devotees. “Let them clearly
state what the dress code
is. Otherwise, the board
should be removed,” he
said.
on the premises helped
him bring the blaze under
control. As news spread,
several members of the
The fight against the
WAS MEDIA THE REASON FOR
KALLAPPA’S DEATH?
DySP Kallappa who
ended his life on July 5
was reportedly deeply
disturbed by the media
onslaught against him
after he was showed as
a thief by some media
channels.
It may be recalled that
Former DySP Kallappa
Handibag (30), from
Chikkamagaluru had
committed suicide on
if their demands are not
met. BJP and JD(S) have
continued with the siege
at Vidhana Soudha. They
spent the second night
in the building after the
government refused to
hand over the suicide
case of DySP Ganapathi
to the CBI.
July 5 after media reports
surfaced on his
involvement in an abduction
case. Handibag,
a quiet and sensitive
person was deeply disturbed
after he came to
know that an FIR has
been lodged against him
and four others by a person
named Tejas Gowda.
Tejas, along with 23
others, was nabbed on
charges of gambling,
hours before he alleged
that he was kidnapped
on June 28 and Handibag
was behind his
kidnapping.
One of Handibag’s
colleague said,“He was
Code (IPC) is trying to
find out whether the
deceased officer was
indeed involved in the
heinous crime of kidnap
and ransom or there was
someone else behind
this. The chain of events
is seemingly suspicious
because Handibag was
never before accused of
corruption. Was he a victim
of the huge gambling
mafia in Chikmagaluru,
is for the CID to investigate.
But what is reportedly
emerging is that he
couldn’t withstand the
media trial and was unable
to see his image being
tarnished in public.”
According to reports,
the CID sleuths who are
probing the case have
found several discrepancies
in the allegations
made by Tejas, who had
accused Handibag of
kidnapping him and releasing
him after he was
reportedly paid a ransom
of Rs 10 lakh.
CCTV CAMERAS TO BE INSTALLED
AT KSRTC BUS STATIONS
The Karnataka State
Road Transport Corporation
(KSRTC) has
initiated the process of
installing closed-circuit
television (CCTV) cameras
in all its depots and
bus stations across the
State. The corporation
has formed a committee
of senior officers to finalise
the specifications
It has been reported
that Congress national
president, Sonia Gandhi,
has conveyed her decision
vesting discretionary
power with Karnataka
Chief Minister (CM),
Siddaramaiah, on the issue
of dropping of minister,
K J George, relating
to the suicide of Deputy
Superintendent of Police,
M K Ganapati.
George, it is said, is
also close to party’s national
leadership. The
high command has been
for the products to be
installed. B.N.S. Reddy,
Director for Security
and Vigilance (KSRTC),
during his recent visit to
the city, had discussed
on how to beef up security.
He said that the KS-
RTC would install CCTV
cameras soon.
The committee has
keeping watch over the
developments relating
to the issue and collecting
information on a daily
basis, it is gathered.
The issue is becoming
complicated, as the
opposition has been demanding
for dropping of
George, while the CM is
hell bent on protecting
him.
Meanwhile reacting
to reports that he was
scheduled to go to New
Delhi to personally explain
things at the behest
of party’s high command,
George dismissed
the reports as media
had two demonstrations
on the functioning of
CCTV cameras sourced
from different manufacturers.
“We are looking
for high-quality products
with good night vision
features. Based on
the committee’s report,
the KSRTC board will call
for the tender and invite
quotations,” Reddy
creation. He insisted
that his Delhi trip is not
on the anvil.
At the same time, it is
said that the state leaders
got the opinion from
national Vice President
of the party, Rahul Gandhi,
that subject to the
situation, demand for
CBI investigation can be
accepted, but there is no
necessity for the resignation
of George, in spite
of amount of pressure
being exerted. This communiqué
was reportedly
conveyed through State
Congress In-charge,
Digvijay Singh
said.The Hassan police
also felt the need to install
CCTV cameras and
to monitor happenings
in the place constantly.
Meanwhile, Hassan MLA
H.S. Prakash offered to
provide the cameras
from the City Municipal
Council funds.
LEGAL BATTLE OVER MAYOR ELECTION
The legal battle on the
rights of MPs, MLAs and
MLCs to vote in the elections
to the posts of mayor
and deputy mayor of a city
corporation has resumed.
A Division Bench of the
High Court of Karnataka
on Thursday ordered issue
of notice to the State
government on an appeal
filed against a single-judge
bench’s verdict upholding
the rights of MPs, MLAs and
MLCs to vote in the elections
of mayor and deputy
mayor of the Bruhat Bangalore
Mahanagara Palike.
The Division Bench comprising
Chief Justice Subhro
Kamal Mukherjee and Justice
Ravi Malimath passed
the order on an appeal
filed by Manjunath Raju, a
BJP candidate who was defeated
in the elections conducted
on September 11,
2015.The notice is initially
on the delay in filling the
appeal against the November
27, 2015 verdict of the
single-judge bench. The Division
Bench also ordered
issuing notices to Mayor
B.N Manjunath Reddy and
Deputy Mayor Hemalatha
Gopalaiah.
BILL TO PREVENT OPENING OF OPEN
UNIVERSITY OUTSIDE KARNATAKA
The State Legislative Assembly
amended the Karnataka
State Open University
(Amendment) Bill, 2016,
on Thursday, to prevent the
university from opening of
centres outside Karnataka.
The Bill removed the provisions
regarding opening
of centres outside the State
by the University as it contradicted
the instructions
issued by the University
Grants Commission regarding
jurisdiction of university
and the provisions of
Article 245 of the Constitution,
which was reiterated
by the Supreme Court in the
case of Prof.Yashpalvs state
of Chattisgarh. The Bill was
passed on Thursday and
it amended the KSOU Act,
1996, for restricting the
university to stick to its territorial
jurisdiction while
running its courses as the
KSOU had stretched its programmes
beyond the State
citing the Act that permitted
it to open study centers
outside the State.
NARESH SHENOY NOT WILLING TO
UNDERGO NARCO TEST
In a recent development,
Naresh Shenoy, the prime
accused in RTI activist
Vinayaka Balilga’s murder
has reportedly not given
his consent for undergoing
narco analysis.
As per norms, narco
analysis could be performed
only with consent
and cannot be forced on an
individual. There is no provision
to allow the accused
to be subjected to this test
without his consent.
The investigators had
filed an application before
the court seeking permission
to conduct narco analysis,
polygraph and brain
mapping tests on Naresh
Shenoy.
The officials probing
the murder case had filed
application in the court
to subject Shenoy to Narco-analysis
procedures so
that crucial details pertaining
to case could be procured.
However, since the
accused has refused to face
the test, the possibilities of
the investigating officers
getting an upper hand are
rather bleak.
It has transpired that in
a similar case in the city,
the concerned had agreed
to undergo narco analysis
in connection with double
murder case at Panjimogaru.
Husband and brother
of the deceased woman had
offered themselves to be
subjected to these procedures,
but they have not so
far been put through these
tests, it is learnt.
Vinayak Baliga was murdered
on the morning of
March 21 this year. Six persons
were earlier arrested
in connection to the case.
The main conspirator and
prime accused Naresh Shenoy
was arrested on June
26, putting an end to his
three month long run.
OVER 2000 VEHICLES CHECKED AND 134
DRIVERS BOOKED AT CUBBON PARK
To curb pollution,
over 2,000 vehicles were
checked and 134 drivers
booked at Cubbon Park
on Thursday. Several officials
of the Karnataka State
Pollution Control Board
(KSPCB) on Thursday inspected
buildings within
Cubbon Park, the city’s biggest
lung space, to ensure
that pollution control measures
were adequately employed.
“Open burning of
solid waste was seen on the
premises of Bal Bhavan and
brought to the attention of
its chairperson Bhavana.
Ms. Bhavanna said that immediate
action would be
taken to ensure segregation
of solid waste,” a Karnataka
State Pollution Control
Board said to media.
During a joint drive, the
transport department and
the Karnataka State Pollution
Control Board (KSP-
CB) officials found that
some vehicles were not
just highly polluting but
also had invalid emission
test certificates. According
to KSPCB chairman Lakshman,
faulty emission testing
was taking place in the
petrol pump adjacent to the
Cubbon Park police station.
The documents
at
the petrol
pump
showed
only 3
out of 66
vehicles
failed
the emission
test.
However,
during
Thursd
a y ’ s
drive, 61 out of 175 vehicles
did not meet emission
standards.
KSPCB has asked the
Transport Commissioner
to be cautious while giving
licences to emission checking
centres. Both the transport
department and KSP-
CB will conduct random
checks at various centres
in the city to ensure quality
and accuracy. The transport
department has also
asked vehicle owners to ensure
emission certificates
are obtained from only authorized
testing centres.
Canteen dumping waste
A Karnataka State Tourism
Development Corporation
(KSTDC) canteen,
which was discharging
plastic straws and kitchen
waste into drains, was
asked to stop immediately.
Emission centres
Vehicular emission testing
centres in fuel stations
were also part of the inspection
on Thursday.
It was found that there
were only three petrol vehicles
that had failed checks
at a particular centre while
the number of vehicles
caught during enforcement
drives was higher.
In order to keep a check
on the emission centres,
KSPCB will carry out random
checks on these
centres in the future, Mr.
Lakshman said.

IAA Trains Professionals to
Deal with Aviation-linked
Challenges
Security, safety and environment
protection are some
of the prime challenges the
civil aviation sector has been
facing globally. India has the
fastest growing domestic aviation
market in the world,
where domestic air passenger
demand grew by 28.1 per cent
in July 2015 as compared to a
year ago. This growth is almost
three times that of China (10.9
per cent) and five times that
of the United States (5.9 per
cent) during the same period.
To help this fast-growing sector
deal with operational and
management challenges, the
Indian Aviation Academy has
been providing training to officials
of Airports Authority of
India (AAI), Director General of
Civil Aviation (DGCA) and Bureau
of Civil Aviation Security
(BCAS).
INDIA CONDEMNS NICE TERROR ATTACK,
EXPRESSES SOLIDARITY WITH FRANCE
President Pranab
Mukherjee
and Prime Minister
Narendra
Modi on Friday
condemned the
deadly terror attack
in Nice resort
city of France after
a trucker loaded
with weapons
and hand grenades killed
at least 80 people who had
gathered to watch fireworks
on the occasion of
Bastille Day celebrations
late Thursday.
Condemning the attack,
President Mukherjee said,
“India stands shoulder to
shoulder with the people
and Government of France.”
“I am shocked to hear
about the terrorist attack
on an innocent crowd of
people gathered to celebrate
the Bastille Day in
Nice, France. I strongly
condemn the perpetrators
of the terrorist attack in
France,” President Mukherjee
said in a series of tweets.
“We will strengthen our
cooperation with France
and other countries in
the fight against terrorism.
Heartfelt condolences
to families of bereaved;
prayers for speedy recovery
of injured in attack,” he
added.
Taking to Twitter, Prime
Minister Modi said, “Appalled
by the horrific attack
in Nice. I strongly condemn
such mindless acts of violence.
My thoughts are with
the families of deceased. I
hope the injured recover
soon. India shares the pain
and stands firmly with our
French sisters and brothers
in this hour of immense
sadness.”
Congress president Sonia
Gandhi also condemned
the attack, saying it reflects
deep resentment to peace
and democratic values.
“The Congress party stands
firmly with the people
of France in these
difficult times,” she
said.
In a statement,
Gandhi expressed
deepest condolences
to the families
of those killed and
called for “strict action”
and “harshest punishment”
against those who
are behind these attacks.
Just hours after announcing
in the traditional
Bastille Day interview that
the state of emergency,
in place since November
attacks that killed 130 in
Paris, was to be removed,
France President Hollande
said it must be extended for
three months.
“The attack was ‘undeniably’
of a ‘terrorist nature’.
The state of emergency
that was implemented in
the awake of the November
terror attacks in Paris and
was supposed to end on
July 26 will be extended by
another three months,” said
President Hollande.
The President said
France would “again reinforce
its (military) action in
Iraq and Syria”.
“France as a whole is
under the threat of Islamic
terrorism. We have to
demonstrate absolute vigilance
and show determination
that is unfailing,” says
Hollande, who announced
that he would visit Nice on
Friday to express his support
for the city.
Since the November
13th terror attacks in Paris,
France had been under a
State of Emergency, and authorities
were on high alert
due to UEFA Euro 2016, the
European men’s football
championship taking place.
Meanwhile, the truck
driver has been identified
as Nice Matin, a man of
Tunisian origin from Nice.
His identity papers were
found in the cab of the lorry,
source said.
The man, believed to be
31, fired on crowds of people
before he was shot dead
by police. Source added
Residents have been told
to stay indoors as the emergency
services work at the
scene. (ANI)
YOUNG PUNJAB-BASED BUREAUCRAT AN
INSPIRATION FOR KASHMIRI YOUTH
Having spent
nearly seven years
as an Indian Administrative
Service
(IAS) officer, Dr. Sumeet
Kumar Jarangal,
says that his desire
to serve the nation,
bring joy and happiness
to the people of
the country, and also
be an inspiration to folks
from his home state of
Jammu and Kashmir, remains
undiminished.
Dr. Jarangal, an IAS officer
of the Punjab cadre
(2009 batch), is currently
the Deputy Commissioner
at Sri Muktsar Sahib and
hails from the Talab Tillo
area of Jammu.
This young bureaucrat’s
achievements and
work ethic has become an
inspiration for the youth
of the region.
He told the media that
what inspires him deliver
on his responsibility as an
IAS officer is the hopes,
energy and openness of
the general public.
PONDY CM SLAMS PREVIOUS AINRC GOVT
Puducherry Chief Minister
V Narayanasamy on
Friday hit out at the previous
AINRC government
headed by N Rangasamy,
alleging that it had failed
to procure Central funds
The previous government
had not taken
up developmental programmes
with the Centre
and hence no funds were
CHENNAI REGIONAL PARTY PROTESTS AGAINST SALE OF GANGAJAL
Members of regional
Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam
(PDK) party has
held protest in chennai
against the Central Government
for selling ‘Gangajal’,
water from the
holy river Ganges.
He says that though
he would have loved to
be a part of the Jammu
and Kashmir cadre of the
IAS, he considers himself
lucky to have got a placing
in the Punjab cadre
of the service, and is determined
to meet the expectations
of the people
as much and as far as possible.
“I am presently posted
in Punjab, the energy
of the people is more as
compared to any other
place. Here, the personality
trait is very open.
Maybe, it is due to religion.
The secular credentials
and openness of the
people of Punjab is definitely
more than others.
Since I belong to Jammu
and Kashmir, my first love
is for the people of that
state. I even wanted to
get into the Jammu and
Kashmir cadre, but consider
myself lucky that I
got Punjab, which is close
to Jammu and Kashmir.
Punjab has a culture that
is similar to Jammu and
many people from Jammu
birth anniversary
celebrations of
former Tamil Nadu
Chief Minister and
veteran Congress
leader, late K Kamaraj.
“We should fight
with the Centre
for funds and I am
adopting the strategy
Prime Minister Narendra
Modi had adopted
during his tenure as Gujarat
Chief Minister to fight
and get funds from the
Centre,” he said.
The Indian Postal Department
began sale of
‘Gangajal’ water for religious
purposes on Monday
under a new scheme
launched by the Centre.
Scores of protestors
gathered outside the
Anna Salai post office
and shouted slogans
against the Central government.
The protesters said
that the holy Ganges River
was highly polluted
work here in Punjab,”
Dr. Jarangal
said.
Dr. Jarangal
says that he is
a great believer
in using modern
technology to resolve
civil issues.
Indirectly referring
to the volatile
situation in Kashmir, this
IAS officer says talented
youth are often forced to
move out of insurgent-hit
states due to lack of opportunities.
“The militancy, which
has affected Jammu and
Kashmir for the last 30
years, results in fewer
opportunities for the
people. There is no investment
by the private
sector, which means less
opportunity. The youth
can only showcase their
talent if they come out
of Jammu and Kashmir.
In today’s era, which we
describe as globalization
and liberalization,
the whole world is connected.
Here, in Punjab,
almost every household
has its member settled
abroad. If it can happen in
Punjab, why not in Jammu
and Kashmir,” he asks?
and its water could lead
to fatal diseases.
The protesters were
later detained by the police.
Under a Centre-sponsored
scheme, holy water-
drawn from two
river sources at Gangotri
and Rishikesh in the
northern Uttarakhand
Dr. Jarangal believes
things are changing for
the better. As more and
more youths from the
state make their mark in
the civil services examinations,
he hopes barriers
holding them back
will weaken and allow
them to aspire to a better
life.
“In recent years, you
may have seen the trend
of many people from Jammu
and Kashmir joining
the civil services. Some of
them have even got very
good ranks. This year’s
second rank holder is also
from Jammu and Kashmir.
So, I believe, if there was
any barrier, it is mental
rather than what we assume
is a part of society,”
he said.
Dr. Jarangal and many
other youths from Jammu
and Kashmir are gradually
coming into the
limelight because of their
dedication and sincerity
towards serving the
JD (U) BLAMES CENTRE’S ‘SHORT-SIGHTEDNESS’ FOR
DETERIORATING SITUATION IN KASHMIR
Blaming the Centre’s
lack of farsightedness for
the deteriorating situation
in Kashmir of which Pakistan
is taking advantage,
Janata Dal (United) national
spokesperson K.C. Tyagi
on Friday said if given any
more space, the situation
might turn worse giving
Pakistan further opportunity
to cash in on it.
Centre’s lack of farsightedness
is to blame for the
deteriorating situation
in Kashmir, of which the
neighbouring country Pakistan
is taking advantage.
If given any more space,
the situation may become
worse and will give Pakistan
an opportunity to further
comment on,” Tyagi
told the media.
Commenting on India’s
Permanent Representative
Syed Akbaruddin remarks
on Pakistan, he said, “I
agree with Indian’s Representative’s
remarks that
Pakistan is exporting terrorism
through tour, and
is responsible for the upswing
in violence.”
He said Pakistan is taking
advantage of the Kashmir
situation, and thus, the
Indian government must be
conscious about it.
Talking about controversial
Islamic Zakir Naik,
he preacher “Zakir is infamous
for his aggressive and
provocative statements, he
doesn’t have any space left
except for jail and does not
sympathise with Muslims,”
he said.
“I Welcome Venkaiah
Naidu’s progressive approach,
where they held
talks and enrolled the opposition
parties to pass
GST, JD (U) has already
extended its support in favour
of GST,” he said.
Talking about black
money, he said, “Even after
SIT submitting its fifth report
on black money case,
the centre has failed to initiate
any action.”
Welcoming the release
of Hardik Patel, Tyagi said,
“Several people from patel
community died because
of Gujarat’s government
ruthlessness and because
of this unemployment and
law and order situation in
Gujarat was also surfaced.”
152 INDIANS LAND SAFELY IN THIRUVANANTHAPU-
RAM FROM WAR-TORN SOUTH SUDAN
The Indian Air Force
aircraft C-17 carrying Indian
citizens from war-torn
South Sudan landed at
Thiruvananthapuram on
Friday. The evacuation operation
named as ‘ Sankat
Mochan’ is being headed by
Minister of State for External
Affairs General (Retd.)
VK Singh. In a tweet External
Affairs Minister Sushma
Swaraj said that both the
aircrafts will be reaching
Delhi via Thiruvananthapuram.
In a series of tweets,
Swaraj further stated that
Indian Air Force is carrying
out the operation along
with the Indian Railways
and Air India, who will facilitate
the onward journey.
“Indian Railways and Air
India will facilitate their onward
journey,” she tweeted.
“Indian Air Force is carrying
out OP,” she tweeted.
Ministry of External Affairs
(MEA) official spokesperson
Vikas Swarup in a tweet
said, the first aircraft has
143 Indian citizens including
10 women and three
infants. The second aircraft
is carrying nine Indian nationals
and two Nepalese
citizens as reportedly said
by the Indian Ambassador
in South Sudan, Srikumar
Menon. South Sudan’s President
Salva Kiir has ordered
a ceasefire after days of intense
fighting in Juba which
left more than 150 dead
and many more injured
since fighting broke out on
Thursday. The ceasefire announcement
came as United
Nations Secretary General
Ban Ki-Moon called
on the Security Council
to impose an “immediate
arms embargo” and targeted
sanctions on leaders and
commanders blocking implementation
of the peace
deal. There was renewed
fighting between the government
and former rebel
forces since Thursday in
Juba. The latest exchanges
were apparently sparked
by a shootout between
President Kiir’s and Vice
President Riek Machar’s
bodyguards. (ANI)
PAKISTAN BEHIND KASHMIR UNREST:
PANTHERS PARTY
Taking strong exception
to Chairman of the Pakistan
People’s Party Bilawal
Bhutto calling up separatist
leader Mirwaiz Umar
Farooq to express his solidarity
with the people of
Kashmir amid the ongoing
unrest, the National Panthers
Party (NPP) on Friday
said it makes
it clear that Pakistan
is behind the
current state of affairs
in Jammu and
Kashmir.
NPP chairman
Harsh Dev Singh
said the international
community
must take note of
interference of Pakistan
in the internal affairs
of India. “It becomes evidently
clear that Pakistan is
behind all that is happening
in Jammu and Kashmir. It
has been fermenting trouble
since beginning. Now
that Bilawal Bhutto has
called up Mirwaiz amply
goes to show that Pakistan
is behind violence in Kashmir,”
he told the media.
Sources say that Bhutto
told Mirwaiz that after
Friday prayers, solidarity
marches would be taken
out across Pakistan to
express solidarity with
Kashmiris. “Spoke to @MirwaizKashmir
& expressed
condolences, condemnation
& solidarity with the
people of #Kashmir,” Bhutto
tweeted. Mirwaiz, meanwhile,
appreciated Bhutto’s
concern for Kashmir. “Appreciate
the support & concern
of the people of Pakistan
and their leadership @
BBhuttoZardari,” Mirwaiz
tweeted in response. (ANI)
HARDIK PATEL RELEASED AFTER NINE MONTHS
Patidar Anamat Andolan
Samiti (PAAS) leader Hardik
Patel, who was arrested
on sedition charges, was on
Friday released from the
Lajpore Central Jail after
nine months amid rousing
welcome by his supporters.
The district administration,
meanwhile, has imposed
Section 144 (of the
Criminal Procedure Code
(CrPC) in the region to
ensure that no untoward
incident takes place in the
wake of his release.
Patel was granted bail on
Friday last by the Gujarat
High Court in both sedition
cases against him.
However, one of the conditions
of the bail was that
he would not be permitted
to enter Gujarat for the next
six months. The other condition
was that he would
have to file an undertaking.
Patel had been booked
with sedition charges on
October 19 over his provocative
remarks where he
had asked his supporters
to kill policemen rather
than commit suicide for the
cause of reservation.
Patel was arrested and
imprisoned in a jail in Surat
after he led a huge revolt
of the Patidar community
against the ruling BJP Government
in the state.
Patel’s arrest was followed
by large-scale arson
and violence by his supporters
in some of Gujarat’s
biggest towns. (ANI)

Lankan Court Rejects
Army’s List of Missing
LTTE Surrendees
A Sri Lankan court has
rejected a list of missing
LTTE surrendees produced
before it by the army. The
court rejected the list as
the Army provided a list of
LTTE surrendees, who have
been rehabilitated but the
petitions have been filed
on behalf of the LTTE surrendees,
who went missing
after they surrendered to
the security forces. During
a hearing to address the
Habeas Corpus petitions
filed on behalf of the missing
LTTE surrendees, the
court also ordered the army
to provide a list of the surrendees
mentioned in the
petitions at the next date.
Thousands of men, who
were associated with the
LTTE surrendered to the
security forces at the end of
the war as they were given
assurance that their lives,
Pak calls Burhan Wani
‘martyr’, to observe
July 19 as ‘Black Day’
On the call of Pakistan
Prime Minister Nawaz
on Friday decided that the
country will observe July
19 as ‘Black Day’ against
the Indian “barbarism in
the Kashmir Valley. “The
decision was made at a
special Cabinet meeting
preceded over by Prime
Minister Sharif, who on Friday
termed the movement
of Kashmiris as a ‘movement
of freedom’ in Lahore,
source said. Prime Minister
Sharif said that Pakistan
will continue to extend
moral, political and diplomatic
support for Kashmiris
in their just struggle
for “right to self-determination.
“He added the “Indian
brutalities” will give impetus
to the freedom struggle,
which even the seven
hundred thousand Indian
soldiers deployed in the Indian
side of Kashmir could
not suppress.
B’desh Clerics Deliver
Anti-terrorism Sermon
at Friday Prayers
Clerics on Friday delivered
an identical sermon
in hundreds of thousands
of mosques across Bangladesh
condemning terrorism
as part of a beefed-up campaign
to combat extremism
in the wake of recent terror
attacks in the country. The
clerics read out a two-page
special sermon ahead of
the weekly Friday prayers
denouncing violence and
extremism in the name of
religion citing verses from
the Holy Quran and sayings
of the Prophet, officials
said. “Whoever kills a person
unjustly, it is as though
he has killed all mankind,”
it read, citing a verse from
the Quran.
Pak Military Pressurising
Sharif to Malign
India: Former Diplomat
Former diplomat N.N.
Jha on Friday rubbished
Pakistan’s assertion that
‘excessive brutalities’ is being
exerted by the Indian
armed forces to control the
violent protests in Kashmir.
He, however, lauded India’s
permanent representative
to United Nations Syed Akbaruddin
for giving a befitting
reply to the Asian
neighbour. “The decision
to keep on agitating in all
the international fora about
Kashmir and try to malign
India by talking about the
so-called ‘excessive brutalities’
so on and so forth
is absolutely rubbish and I
think our Permanent Representative
has been pretty
orchestrative and gave a
very good reply,” he said.
DRIVES TRUCK THROUGH CROWDS
At least 84 people have
died and dozens are hurt after
a terrorist drove a truck
through crowds along Nice’s
packed waterfront.
Ten children were among
the dead after the driver hit
people celebrating Bastille
Day along the famous Promenade
Des Anglais.
Fifty more children are
being treated at the children’s
hospital in Nice, some
with “life and death” injuries.
Video footage shows police
trying to stop the lorry
slamming into revellers at
the end of a fireworks display.
A motorcyclist who tried
TERROR ATTACKS IN FRANCE IN 21ST CENTURY
In the first 16 years of
the 21st century, France
has been a victim of 17 terror-related
incidents, the
latest being on Thursday
evening, when, a truck driver
equipped with weapons
and hand grenades, mowed
down at least 80 people in
the resort city of Nice during
a Bastille Day celebratory
fireworks display.
Following is a list of terror
attacks in France between
2003 and 2016:
A jihadist wearing a fake
explosive belt attacked police
WOULD ASK CONGRESS FOR DECLARATION
OF WAR ON ISIS: TRUMP
Republican presidential
candidate Donald Trump on
Friday said if elected he would
go to Congress and seek declaration
of war against the Islamic
State terror group and
would involve NATO in the
effort.
“I would. I would. This is
war,” Trump told Fox News in
an interview when asked if he
would go to the Congress and
ask for a declaration of war.
“If you look at it, this is
war coming from all different
parts. And frankly itswar and
we’re dealing with people
without uniforms. In the old
days you would have uniforms.
You knew what you
were fighting,” he said.
“We are allowing people
into our country who we have
no idea where they are, where
they are from, who they are,
they have no paperwork, they
have no documentation in
many cases and Hillary Clinton
wants to allow 550 per
cent more than even Obama
and he is letting them in by the
thousands,” he said.
Trump said NATO should
also be involved in the war.
“I have been saying it we
Others said the driver
swerved from side to side to
kill as many people as possible
along more
the promenade.
Many terrified
revellers fled into
the sea to escape
the attack, which
happened at
about 10.30pm
on Thursday.
The truck
eventually came
to a stop after
someone jumped onto the
side of it, as people screamed
for the driver to stop.
The attacker then
emerged from the vehicle
and was confronted by revellers,
some of whom thought
it was still an accident.
One, Egyptian Nader El
Shafei, told the media: “The
guy was very nervous and I
tried to talk to him.
“I was just in front of the
13-14 November 2015:
Around 130 people were
killed and more than 350
others injured after multiple
shooting and grenade
attacks occurred; among the
locations targeted were a
music venue, sports stadium
and several bar and restaurant
terraces. 90 persons
were killed during a siege
at an Eagles of Death Metal
concert inside the Bataclan.
21 August 2015:
An attempted mass
shooting occurred on a train
traveling from Amsterdam
who was subdued by
other passengers.
26 June 2015:
An Islamist delivery driver
probably linked to ISIS decapitated
a man and rammed
a company van into gas cylinders
at the Air Products
gas factory in an attempt to
blow up the building.
19 April 2015:
should use NATO for a purpose.
I mean, we’re spending
a fortune on NATO. We have
countries in NATO that don’t
make a fair contribution,” he
said.
“We are supporting NATO
and we should at least get
something out of it and getting
rid of ISIS and getting
rid of this cancer that we’re
watching all over the world,
that certainly would be a good
thing, a good thing for NATO
to be involved in,” he added.
Trump criticised President
Barack Obama for not using
the words “radical Islamic
terror”.
“Why he refuses to use
window of the truck and
trying to wave to him to stop
and tell him there is a lot of
people under his truck.
“So in that time all of us
During this period, a third
Islamist gunman and close
friend of the Kouachi brothers,
Amedy Coulibaly was
responsible for two shootings
and an hostage taking
at a Hypercacher kosher
market. He said he synchronized
his attacks with the
Kouachi brothers. Coulibaly
had pledged allegiance to
the Islamic State of Iraq and
At least 20 people were
wait a little while and let’s see
what happens. Who knows?
Maybe you will be surprised
and maybe we will all be surprised,”
he said.
“It’s possible but let’s just
wait. It won’t take long to find
out,” he added.
Trump said he would make
it difficult for people to come
into the US from countries
where terrorism prevails.
“I would be making it very,
very hard for people to come
into our country for one thing
from terrorist areas. I would
be so extreme in terms of documentation,”
Trump said.
Mr El Shafei added: “Just
when they (the police) arrived
they just felt something
was wrong so
they kept yelling at
him and when he
did not step out -
they saw him from
the window taking
his gun out.
“They knew that
would be a gun
shooting so they
just killed him right
away - they did not
wait to negotiate or
something, they just opened
fire on him.”
Several guns and grenades
were found inside the
vehicle, Christian Estrosi,
president of the region, has
confirmed.
French President Francois
“I would not allow people
Referring to today’s terrorist
the United States Government
to the Pakistan military
for fighting terrorism
is being spent by the country’s
intelligence agency,
ISI, for promoting and supporting
terrorism.
According to documents
released by Rahmatullah
Nabil, former chief of
Afghan Spy Agency, the
National Directorate of Security
(NDS), Islamabad
“strikes only those insurgents
who threaten its interests”.
According to the sources,
Nabil has claimed that the
ISI systematically supports
terrorist groups, while
pointing out that Pakistan
has for long been funding
terrorist organisations,
particularly the Haqqani
network.
According to one of the
documents leaked by Nabil,
an “official letter dated July
2014 from the central office
of the ISI in Islamabad
was sent to MI-422 office
in Swaba and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa,
in which it directed
the office to thank that
the people that succeeded
in plotting the attack on
Kabul Airport (now Hamid
Karzai International Airport)
and gave 2.5 million
Pakistani rupees to every
one of the following: Haji
Khalil Haqqani, Haji Hakim
Woluswal, Qari Zahir Shah
and Mawlawi Hakim. Moreover,
the office was directed
to donate 1.5 million Pakistani
rupees to the families
of those that were involved
in the attack.”
Reportedly, insurgents
had attacked the Kabul International
Airport a day
before this letter was issued.
According to another
document, the ISI 945 office
in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in
an official note dated April
6, 2015 to the central office
in Islamabad wrote,
“Officials of 945 office, in a
meeting with Toryalai, the
head of the network and his
co-fighters on April 5, 2015,
were tasked to kidnapped
and kill Afghanistan’s Shia
leaders in Herat, Kabul and
Farah. In addition, they
gave 2 million Pakistani
rupees to the participant in
that meeting.”
In the note, it was mentioned
that 23 people from
Toryalai’s group, who were
busy with military training
in Cherat, had completed
their training.
According to another
document from regional
office in Peshawar to central
command center in
Rawalpindi, a Pakistani
colonel wrote, “I want to
inform you that a meeting
was held between Hafiz Gul
Bahaduri of Hafiz Gul Bahadur
Group with the commander
of Afghan Taliban
Maulavi Hamdullah. The
main purpose of the meeting
was to provide rented
houses to leaders of Afghan
Taliban in Hayat Abad and
Tahkal of Peshawar who
have been deployed from
remote regions of Miran
Shah. In addition, armored
vehicles and guards should
be provided to secure their
lives and activities.”
According to Nabil, thousands
of Madrasas in Pakistan
are only involved in
brain-washing, terrorism
and extremism. (ANI)
US CONGRESS CONDEMNS PAK FOR VIOLATING
HUMAN RIGHTS TO PURSUE CPEC PROJECT
European parliament
Vice-President Ryszard
Czarnecki has said Pakistan
is violently crushing dissent
and indulging in human
rights violations of the
Balochistan people as the
‘China-Pakistan Economic
and Defence Cooperation
(CPEC)’ project is being
constructed against their
will.
“The grievances of the
local Baloch community
were being completely
ignored, and anything interpreted
as dissent, was
being violently crushed,”
said Czarnecki at an event
on the ‘China-Pakistan Economic
and Defence Cooperation,
Global and Regional
Impact’, in the US Congress
on Thursday, source said.
Along with Czarnecki,
other speakers at the event
included Dr. Walid Phares,
Co-Secretary General of the
Transatlantic Parliamentary
Group on Counter Terrorism
and Paulo Casaca,
Executive Director of Arc
humankind.
In his remarks about the
CPEC, Czarnecki highlighted
the manner in which
this project was being constructed
against the will
of the local population in
Balochistan, leading to the
heavy presence of Pakistani
military and police apparatus
in the area.
He said while the security
deployment was apparently
for the safety of the
Chinese personnel and infrastructure,
it had resulting
in a situation where the
human rights of the local
population were being frequently
violated.
Moreover, the Pakistani
Army was engaged in
forceful evacuation of people
from their traditional
homesteads and farmlands
in several areas of Gilgit-Baltistan
and Balochistan,
so as to make land
available for the CPEC, he
added.
He also highlighted that
the failure of the international
community to intervene
and check atrocities
by the Pakistan army in
the areas proposed for the
CPEC, would result in the
escalation of human rights
violations of innocent civilians
in Pakistan.
Echoing similar sentiments,
Casaca mentioned
that while the CPEC was a
good initiative, it was going
through disputed territory
and was being completely
controlled by the Pakistan
army with no local governance
participation being
allowed.
Local inhabitants in the
areas of Gilgit Baltistan and
Baluchistan were being
forcefully cleared for the
project, rendering people
homeless and depriving
them of their sources of
livelihood.
He also referred to the
aggressive Chinese actions
in the South China Sea, and
lamented that while the US,
along with its allies, was
trying to maintain freedom
of navigation in the area,
Pakistan, the foremost beneficiary
of US largesse over
the years, was now supporting
the Chinese regime.
The CPEC project comprises
a network of railways,
roads and pipelines
that would connect Pakistan’s
port city of Gwadar
in the province of Balochistan,
with the Chinese city
of Kashgar in landlocked
Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous
Region (XUAR).(ANI)
MAOIST CENTRE TO BLOCK BUDGET BILLS UNTIL VOTE ON
‘NO-CONFIDENCE MOTION’ AGAINST PM OLI
The Communist Party
of Nepal (Maoist Centre)
on Friday decided to block
three major bills related
to the annual budget announcement
at the Parliament
until the House voted
on a ‘no-confidence motion’
filed against present Prime
Minister K. P. Sharma Oliled
The Maoist Centre had
earlier filed a ‘no-confidence
motion’ against
Prime Minister Oli after
withdrawing its support
from the Union Government
post which the ruling
party is now a minority in
the Parliament.
Meanwhile, the CPN
Maoist Centre is also
holding its Central Office
political issues
including formation of a
new government under its
discuss taking other fringe
parties into confidence to
endorse its ‘no-confidence
motion’ against Prime Minister
Oli and government
formation in alliance with
the Nepali Congress, among
other issues.
PAKISTAN CRICKET BOARD BUYS BULLET PROOF
BUSES TO WOO BACK VISITING TEAMS
The Pakistan Cricket
Board (PCB) has bought
four bulletproof buses in
its effort to try and convince
other international
teams to shed their
security apprehensions
and visit the country.
Pakistan has largely
been shunned by teams
since 2009 when gunmen
attacked a bus carrying
Sri Lankan cricketers,
injuring six players
and killing six security
personnel and two civilians.
The incident has
forced Pakistan to play
their ‘home’ matches at
the United Arab Emirates
and the country has
since remained starved
of international cricket
at home, barring Zimbabwe’s
limited-overs tour
in 2015.
“We have bought
these four Coaster buses
as part of our efforts
to revive international
cricket in the country,”
said a PCB spokesman.
“There will be high expectations
from teams
willing to visit Pakistan
and we want to ensure
that we provide them
with the best possible
arrangements.
“Having these bulletproof
vehicles would
play a major part in convincing
teams.”
The spokesman said
PCB wanted to host the
final of the Pakistan Super
League, the inaugural
edition of which was
held in UAE earlier this
year.
“We have to have discussions
with the (overseas)
players about their
safety and security and I
think this new addition
in our security facilities
will definitely give us an
edge,” the spokesman
said.
“Our ultimate goal is
to revive international
cricket, and we are doing
our best to make sure we
can.”
JOHN TERRY WILL CONTINUE AS CHELSEA CAPTAIN:
MANAGER ANTONIO CONTE
Long-serving defender
John Terry will remain
Chelsea’s captain
in the coming season,
new manager Antonio
Conte said on Thursday
at his first news conference
since joining the
Premier League club.
Terry, 35, signed a
new one-year contract at
Stamford Bridge in May
to end speculation that
he was going to leave the
London club after more
than 700 appearances.
He remains a firm favourite
with the club’s fans.
“John Terry is captain
of this team. He is a great
player with a great personality
and charisma.
He knows the club. We
take all decisions together
with the club and I am
very happy John signed,”
Conte said.
Conte, who guided
Juventus to three successive
Serie A titles from
2012 to 2014 before
becoming the Italian national
team coach, has
replaced interim manager
Guus Hiddink.
Known for his motivational
powers and fiery
touchline presence,
the Italian said the team
would need to emulate
his work ethic to get
back to winning ways after
missing out on qualification
for European
football.
“When I was in Italy I
liked to say the coach is
like a tailor, who must
make the best dress for
the team,” Conte said.
“Every manager has
his own idea of football
and I want to transfer
my ideas to the players.
I have great passion for
football, for my team and
my work,” he explained.
“It’s important to have
players who are ready to
fight, play good football
and transfer our passion
and emotion to the fans.
I am a worker. I suffer
during the game. I want
my players and the fans
to see this.”
Chelsea, the 2014-15
Premier League champions,
finished only 10th in
the table last season and
parted company with
manager Jose Mourinho
midway through the
campaign.
“Last season was a
bad season,” Conte said.
“We must fight for the
title, we belong in the
Champions League and
we must stay there.
“This league is very
difficult. There are six
or seven teams that can
win the title. This situation
excites me.”
Conte is the fifth Italian
to manage Chelsea,
following in the footsteps
of GianlucaVialli,
Claudio Ranieri, Carlo
Ancelotti and Roberto Di
Matteo.
He begins his tenure
in England with a London
derby at home to
West Ham United on 15
August.
SAINA NEHWAL AIMS FOR GOLD
AT RIO OLYMPICS
Bolstered by Australian Open
triumph, India ace shuttler-
SainaNehwal says she is now
working on her half smashes under
the watchful eyes of coach
Vimal Kumar to get closer to the
goal of winning a gold medal at
next month’s Rio Olympics.
“The victory in Australia came
at just the right time. I was really
looking forward for some change
and nothing boosts confidence
like winning. I needed a win to
keep believing that I am on the
right track,” the 26-year-old told
media.
“I am working hard on my half
smashes to get closer to my goals.
It is wonderful to win Australian
Open prior to the Olympics. It is
very satisfying to beat two world
champions and a junior world
champion in one tournament,”
added the girl from Hyderabad
who clinched the Australian title
last month.
Set to play in her third Olympics,
Saina said she is completely
fit and the key will be to “reach the
peak” in that particular week.
“I take each tournament as it
comes. Rio Olympics will also
be like any other games. My approach
to the game is very positive
and I would like to keep it
like that and focus on my game. I
feel that on the day that I am 100
percent fit, I have the potential to
defeat anyone,” said the London
Olympics bronze medallist.
“I feel I am fit. I am running
nicely. At the end of the day, it’s
important that you reach the peak
and play your best during that
particular week. That’s what will
count ultimately and will be the
key.”
It has been a year and a half that
Saina has been training under Vimal
Kumar in Bangalore and she
said the former national coach
was the one who made her believe
that she can be a champion.
“Vimal Sir’s influence is the biggest
change. I really want to thank
him for making me believe every
day that I am a champion, I can be
number one. Vimal Sir is helping
me work on my half smashes and
get closer to my goals,” said Saina,
who had reached the World No. 1
under Vimal’s guidance last year.
“It’s not easy to play at the highest
level. I would like to give my
best and like all the players my
goal is also to come back with a
gold medal. It’s a big contingent
going from India this time, so we
hope to have a triumphant return
with lots of medals.
FORMER ENGLAND BATSMAN MICHAEL CARBERRY
DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER
Former England batsman
Michael Carberry
has been diagnosed with
a cancerous tumour,
Hampshire county cricket
club said on Thursday.
The 35-year-old lefthander
saw a specialist
on Tuesday after missing
a championship match
against Warwickshire
because he had felt unwell.
Hampshire said in a
statement that following
the diagnosis “further
tests would be undertaken
before the relevant
treatment commences.
“Michael Carberry has
been part of the Hampshire
Cricket family for
10 years and on behalf
of everyone at and associated
with the club, I
would like to send him
and his family our very
best wishes at this very
difficult time,” said chairman
“‘Carbs’ has taken on
and beaten serious illness
before and we will
be doing all we can to
make sure he does the
same again this time.”
Carberry has previously
suffered from
blood clots on the lung,
missing the start of the
2011 season.
The batsman played
for England at test, oneday
DAVIS CUP: RAMKUMAR RAMANATHAN MAKES WINNING
DEBUT AS INDIA TAKES 1-0 LEAD VS SOUTH KOREA
Youngster Ramkumar
Ramanathan made a
winning Davis Cup debut
with a hard-fought
victory over Seong Chan
Hong in the opening singles
as India took a 1-0
lead in the Asia/Oceania
Group-I tie at Chandigarh
on Friday.
After battling for two
hours and 36 minutes,
the 21-year-old Ramkumar,
ranked 217 in ATP
singles list, was serving
for the match when
Hong suffered a thigh
injury and conceded the
match.
Ramkumar was leading
6-3,2-6,6-3,6-5 (15-
15) when Hong suddenly
clenched his right
thigh, grimacing in pain.
It brought a sudden end
to the match, taking a
bit of sheen out of Ramkumar’s
victory at the
MANNY PACQUIAO DROPS BIG HINT
OVER BOXING RETURN
Filipino boxing legend
Manny Pacquiao has
hinted that he may come
out of retirement, insisting
that he is still physically
fit to return to the
ring.
The 37-year-old boxer-turned-politician
maintained that his top
priority was his political
career but expressed
that his passion for the
sport had not diminished,
Sport24 reported.
The hot and humid
conditions coupled with
a tough surface took a
toll on the Korean. Saketh
Myneni will now
play against Yong-Kyu
Lim in the second singles.
The persistent showers
that lashed the city
also affected the grass
courts as it was a bit soggy
from the outset.
It was dry but dead at
the centre court where
the ball hardly rose
above knee level.
It prevented the
match from rising to a
quality level. There was
no pace at all and mere
keeping the ball in the
court was a struggle for
the players. The sun was
not exactly blazing but
the humidity made the
playing conditions more
challenging and the Korean
was clearly wilting.
Ramkumar, who relied
mostly on backhand
slice, was also struggling
but he broke the Korean
in the seventh game
when Hong netted a
backhand and the Indian
converted the breakpoint
with a trademark
inside out forehand winner.
The 21-year old Indian
tried to up pace with
Earlier, Bob Arum,
who has promoted Pacquiao
since 2005, stated
that the boxer has given
his nod to look for a venue
as well as an opponent
to fight in Las Vegas
later this year.
According to the promoter,
they have been
trying to find a suitable
date that wouldn’t interfere
with the boxer’s
senatorial responsibilities
and his ability to
train.
However, the boxing’s
only eight-division titleholder
said in a statement
that he had neither
made such plans nor
discussed arrangements
with Arum while dropping
a big hint of a potential
comeback.
Pacquiao boasts an
his serve but that resulted
in four double faults.
Despite so many errors,
Ramkumar managed to
hold and broke Hong in
the next game to sit pretty
at 5-3.
Ramkumar hardly
approached the net and
kept hitting backhand
slices for his returns
from the back of the
court.
Hong capitalized a bit
on that by hitting a few
unreachable drop volleys
but could not stop
Ramkumar from serving
out the set in the ninth
game.
The Korean fared better
in the second set, well
aided by Ramukmar’s
unrelenting unforced
errors. A double break
— first and fifth games
— put Hong ahead 4-1.
In a jiffy, the second
set was over with the
two player’s level 1-1.
The heat and humidity
was testing the two players
now. Hong looked
better prepared for the
surface than the Indian
as the Korean moved
well on the court and set
up a few points easily.
Ramkumar faced another
break chance in the
third game of the third
set but came out serving
well to thwart the danger.
It was now Hong’s
turn to face breakpoints
in the next game and he
only helped Ramkumar
by serving a double fault
on the second.As the set
enviable record of 58
wins in his 66 professional
fights. His last
defeat was against Floyd
Mayweather during a
heavily anticipated bout
last year.
The boxing legend,
progressed, the weather
became cooler but the
threat of rain was looming
large. Ramkumar
served with a lot of authority
in the seventh to
make it 5-2 in his favour.
Ramkumar had two
chances to close the set
in the next game but the
Korean saved both set
points. In the ninth game
though, he did not give
any chance to the Korean,
serving out the set
comfortably with a volley
winner.
The Indian attacked
Hong with aggressive
strokes, pinning him to
baseline and enticed a
forehand error on the
breakpoint. A break in
the very first game of the
fourth set Ramkumar
up nicely for the win.He
smelt victory and started
to play aggressively
and the resultant errors
meant he lost his serve
twice after that to stand
3-3 with the Korean.
At 5-5, Ramkumar
broke Hong again. He
earned the break point
with a backhand volley
winner and converted
that when Hong’s backhand
sailed over the
baseline.
Ramkumar was serving
for the match when
Korean suffered a thigh
injury and had to be lifted
out of court, bringing
an anti-climactic finish
to the match.
his illustrious career
crisis of 2008.
“I had several conversations
with Chidambaram
on this, but found
him reluctant to face up
to this inconvenient truth.
He is too intelligent not to
have seen the point; I suspect
he found it politically
convenient to point to an
external scapegoat rather
than call attention to domestic
structural factors,”
Subbarao, the bureaucrat-turned
central banker,
has written in a book.
He has also blamed Chidambaram
who “wholeheartedly
supported his
appointment” to the Mint
Road for undermining
the autonomy of RBI and
putting pressure on him
to cut interest rates.
WORKING TO HAVE A DEEMED
UNIVERSITY STATUS FOR FDDI: GOVT
Government is working
on granting deemed university
status to Footwear
Design and Development
Institute (FDDI) whose students
have been demanding
they be awarded degrees
instead of diplomas.
Commerce and Industry
Minister Nirmala Sitharaman
said talks are on with
Human Resource Development
Ministry and advice
has been sought from
Prime Minister’s Office on
the issue.
“I want this issue to get a
fair solution, student should
not be put to difficulties, but
this is an inherited problem...
we are working to
have a deemed university
status for them,” she told
the media.
The minister said the
rules governing the status
and “everything about who
can qualify for deemed university
is being looked into
by HRD ministry. They are
guiding us... so work is happening”.
Keen to resolve the issue,
Sitharaman had conducted
about a dozen consultation
meetings with the concerned
ministries, departments,
students and their
parents.
Around 200 students of
FDDI in Noida went on a
rampage last month, ransacking
the premises and
damaging two buses, in
protest against alleged failure
of the institute to give
them degrees, instead of
diplomas.
FDDI had signed an
MoU with Mewar University
in 2012 for awarding
degrees. But last year, UGC
had termed the MoU as illegal,
triggering protests by
students.
From 2012 to 2014,
around 3,609 students had
taken admission in the institute.
Sitharaman had said the
matter is an “issue in legacy.
We inherited something
which was not of our making.”
The issue cropped up
after the University Grants
Commission (UGC) declared
that Mewar University
cannot award degrees to
FDDI students.
INFOSYS RELAUNCHES ESOPS TO
REIN IN ATTRITION
Infosys has relaunched
its employee stock option
plan (ESOP) for junior to
middle level management
staff as it looks to rein in
rising attrition that stood at
21% in the April-June 2016
quarter.
However, the company
is not “unduly concerned”
about the jump in attrition,
which read 17.3% in the
March quarter and 19.2%
in the year-ago period.
“Today, we relaunched
our ESOP programme after
a gap of 10-years plus, after
about 13 years. We are
rewarding about 7,500 of
our employees from junior
to middle level management
with restricted stock
options and we will extend
it to middle management
to senior leaders and title
holders subsequently,” Infosys
Chief Operating Officer
U B Pravin Rao said.
He added that the company
continues to focus on
reskilling employees and
has also revamped its leadership
development programmes.
ESOPs allow employees
to own equity in the company,
which is seen as a morale
booster for them.
Infosys added 13,268
(gross) and 3,006 (net)
people in the said quarter,
taking its headcount to 1,
97,050 at the end of June
2016.
Elaborating on the higher
rate of attrition, Rao said
one of the reasons is “seasonality
because typically
in Q1, we have higher exits
due to higher studies”.
He added that while the
attrition levels have shot up,
Infosys has been able to retain
“high performers”.
“We are really encouraged,
we also track high
performers’ attrition, which
has come down. Earlier last
quarter, it was 13.4% and
this quarter, it has come
down to 11.2%, so we are
encouraged by that,” he
said.
Rao said Infosys will
“watch out”, but at this
stage, it is “not unduly concerned”
and continues to
focus on employee experience
and engagement.
This year, Infosys has given
wage hikes of 6-12% to
its employees in India and
about 2% to onsite workers,
apart from offering equity
to incentivise top performers.
On the impact of the
appointment of Raghuram
Rajan as the new
Governor on stabilising
the rupee, Subbarao says
“the scheduled leadership
change at the Reserve
Bank and the formidable
reputation of
my successor, Raghuram
Rajan, helped restore
confidence in the Indian
markets”.
The book ‘Who Moved
My Interest Rates- Leading
the Reserve Bank of
India through Five Turbulent
Years’ is a tell-tale
352 page memoir by Subbarao.
It hit the stands today
and will be formally
launched next month. It
is published by Penguin
Random House.
The Indira Gandhi National
Open University (IG-
NOU) used to grant degrees
for all courses at the institute,
but it discontinued the
same in 2012 academic session,
even as 1,250 students
were enrolled for various
graduate and post-graduate
programmes.
FDDI roped in Mewar
University of Rajasthan to
Infosys, which is undergoing
a turnaround under
Sikka’s leadership, has been
witnessing a string of senior
leaders quitting the firm.
These exits include
high-profile names like former
chief financial officer
Rajiv Bansal, head of manufacturing
and EVP (Executive
Vice-President) Sanjay
Jalona, Infosys BPO head
and EVP Gautam Thakkar,
“In fact, as chief economic
adviser to the
government, Raghu was
on board all through the
exchange rate turmoil
and was more actively involved
in all the decisions
after he was named in
early August as my successor,”
he notes in the
book, which he began
penning in the middle of
last year.
On the radical measures
that Rajan announced
on assuming
charge, Subbarao says
soon after Rajan came to
RBI as an OSD, they both
had agreed on those steps
like raising forex through
NRI deposits.
“Raghu was kind
enough to offer that I announce
these measures
before signing off. But
I thought that the measures
would be more effective
if he announced
them as the incoming
governor. At least on this
issue, my judgement
worked!” he says in a
chapter titled ‘Rupee Tantrums
137’.(PTI)
offer degree programmes
from academic session
2012. However, UGC in September
2014, questioned
the MoU between FDDI and
Mewar University for grant
of degree to FDDI students
registered for 2012, 2013
and 2014 in light of the
AICTEs non-recognition of
these degrees. (PTI)
and Infosys EdgeVerve
head and EVP Michael Reh.
The most recent exit was
that of Samson David, Infosys’
head of cloud, infrastructure
and security business.
David, who had joined
Infosys as a trainee software
engineer in 1992,
had been recently tasked
by Sikka to spearhead the
company’s flagship artificial
intelligence platform. (PTI)
MFG ELECTRIC VEHICLES CAN
MITIGATE COST: SECRETARY
Challenges posed by
high cost in popularising
hybrid and electric vehicles
in India can be overcome
with a focus on manufacturing
components
and the vehicles in India, a
senior government official
said.
“The biggest challenge
is cost and all of us would
have to work on it so that
people can afford and easily
adopt this new technology.
To make it cheaper,
we would have to work for
Make-in-India and (that)
is the solution for making
electric vehicle affordable,”
said Girish Shankar, Secretary,
Ministry of the Heavy
Industries and Public Enterprises.
He was addressing the
National Workshop & Exhibition
of FAME India.
Assuring the gathering
the government’s commitment
towards electric
mobility under its FAME
India scheme, he sought
feedback from the industry,
saying it would help
them create market and a
self-sustainable model.
“There are complexities
and challenges, but still we
can address them... In this,
not just the government,
but OEMs would have to
come up with firm plans,”
he said, adding that he
expects forums including
the Automotive Component
Manufacturers Association
of India (ACMA) to
play a crucial role in it.
FAME India - Faster
Adoption and Manufacturing
of Hybrid and Electric
vehicles in India - is part
of the National Electric
Mobility Mission Plan. The
scheme envisages Rs 795
crore support in the first
two fiscals that started last
year.
According to Shankar,
globally, hybrid models
are being accepted and
consumers are now able
to afford it. In Europe, two
lakh hybrid vehicles are
self-sustainable without
any government’s support.
He cited China as a good
example of “shifting very
fast to hybrid and now
moving towards electric
mobility”. “It’s a very good
example for us to follow,”
he said.
In Japan, there are more
charging stations than petrol
pumps, Shankar added.
“Apart from technology,
we should take examples
from other countries, and
let us leapfrog and take
advantage of available
technology and guidelines
from other experiences
where we can move much
faster than others,” he
said(PTI)
PRADHAN PROMISES MORE EASE IN
DOING BIZ WITH INDIA
fields in a roadshow.
These fields, discovered
by Oil and Natural Gas
Corporation Ltd (ONGC)
and Oil India LTD (OIL),
are envisaged to be put on
production through expeditious
efforts.
experience of working in
the Indian exploration and
production (E&P) sector.
Promising a “transparent
regulatory regime”
and greater ease of doing
business, the minister in
his plenary address said
that, “we recognise that
the need of the hour is
to increase the domestic
energy production by unlocking
India’s hydrocarbon
potential.”
Easy regulatory administration,
pricing freedom
for crude oil and natural
gas produced from new
fields in a transparent
manner to further promote
oil and gas assets
across the country, he said.
In fact, the current bid
round is also being held
under revised set of industry
friendly bid guidelines
and processes with the
Discovered Small Fields
Policy acting as the regulatory
framework.
Under the bid round,
67 fields in 46 contract
areas, across 9 sedimentary
basins are being
offered to potential investors
through International
Competitive Bidding
in the oil and gas producing
basins.
Of these 67 fields, 36 are
located in offshore areas
and 31 fields are in on land
basins. The fields have estimated
625 Million Barrels
of Oil and Oil Equivalent
Gas in-place volumes,
and are spread over 1500
square kilometers in 26 on
land, 18 shallow water and
2 deep water areas.
hall of attendees, that included
heads of major
energy companies, think
tanks, analysts, Indian
Americans with interest,
oil lobbyist, diplomats
and various technologists,
Pradhan promised all
possible support from his
Ministry and the Government
of India in fructifying
investors endeavours.
“The bid timelines are
stringent and my team is
geared to ensure a smooth
process. I look forward to
an encouraging participation
in the bidding from
you all. We have also setup
a facilitation cell for assisting
you throughout the bid
process,” he concluded his
speech amidst loud cheers
and applause. (PTI)

ANISTON’S ESSAY ON BODY SHAMING
Justin Theroux has
her personal life.
On July 13, the
44-year-old ‘Leftovers’
actor posted a playful
wife as she put up
her hands while sitting
on the side of a bowling
five-year relationship
has been plagued by
tabloid rumours of a
The most recent false
pregnancy story came
via In Touch magazine
in June.
A thoroughly “fedup”
35-year-old rapper,
known for his attraction
for older women, the report
also says the two
have no clues of a serious
relation and it’s only at the
fling stage.
“They are not an exclusive
couple at this time
just causally hanging out
and seeing where things
go,” said the source.
Meanwhile, Cannon
has also filed for a divorce
from Carey in 2015.
YAMI DODGES ‘DISGUSTING’ QUESTIONS
ON SHWETA’S ‘HOME-BREAKER’ REMARK
Though Pulkit Samrat’s
estranged wife sweta Rohira
branded her as a “home
breaker,” Yami Gautam preferred
maintaining silence
over this much-controversial
tiff between the trio.
According to Pinkvilla,
when the ‘Sanam Re’ actress
was recently quizzed on this
allegation, she dodged the
question as it was “disgusting.”
“I will tell you what. We are
here for a beautiful occasion.
Why do you ask a disgusting
question, I will not answer
that. Don’t ask me these disgusting
questions and as long
as you don’t change your
question, I won’t change my
answer,” she said at an event,
where she walked the ramp
for designer Anita Dongre.
For the unversed, Pulkit
recently stated that Yami was
not the cause for the break up
between him and his wife.
To this, Shweta differed
and maintained, “She (Yami
Gupta) is a home-breaker
there is no doubt about
that. I am not saying people
don’t fall out of love. But you
should do it in a dignified way
without putting the blame on
me. If I really had to put out
things, I was your hidden
wife for 5 years, and then I
would have put a lot out. You
are doing everything, you are
talking about it and then you
are saying I want to put the
other woman down. How is
that?”
With this, she added that
though not legally, she is energetically
divorced and does
not want to be called “estranged
wife” anymore.
“We may not have had a
legal divorce but after Pulkit
stooped down to whatever
level, energetically I am divorced.
I am no more Pulkit’s
wife or estranged wife. I want
to request everyone to please
stop calling me an estranged
wife of Pulkit Samrat and
give me a closure, I will be
more than happy when that
happens,” she said.
Though she alleged Yami
to be a “home breaker,” she
even thanked her for bringing
out the ‘Junooniyat’ actor’s
“true colour.”
This came after Pulkit had
accused Shweta of using her
miscarriage incident to gain
sympathy.
