GIRLS PREFERRED OVER BOYS FOR ADOPTION
Bengaluru: There is a
steep increase in adoption
of children. People
wait for even more than
two years to adopt children.
The number of children
available for adoption
is less than 1/4th of
the demand. For the last
two years, that is during
2014-15 and 2015-16
(April to March) 378 babies
were adopted across
the State in which there
were 238 female and 140
males. There are nearly
1284 couples who are
eagerly waiting to adopt
children.
Every year a few orphaned,
abandoned or
surrendered children end
up in orphanages that facilitate
adoption. They
can be adopted by following
the procedures put in
place by the government
of India. In 2014-15 and
2015-16, 204 and 174
children were adopted
in the State respectively.
Not only those who do
not have kids adopt the
children, but even those
who are having their own
kids adopt them. Over
the years, the demand for
adoption has increased.
Young couples in the age
group of 30 to 32 years
are getting registered
their names for adoption.
More female children
are being adopted than
male and more than 80
percent of the adopted
children are in the 0 to 2
years age group.
The eligibility criteria
for a couple to adopt children
are:
• They should be
physically, mentally and
emotional stable and financially
capable.
• No child can be
adopted by a couple unless
they have at least two
years of stable marital relationship.
• Couples in livein
relationship are not
eligible to adopt a child.
• To adopt a child
in the age group of 0-3
years, the maximum
composite age of the parents
should be 90 years,
while the individual age
of the either of the parent
should not be less than
25 years and more than
50 years.
• To adopt children
who are three years
old, the maximum composite
age of the parents
is 105 years.
• In case single
parent desires to adopt,
he or she should not be
of less than 30 years and
above 50 years.
• An unmarried or
single male person is not
permitted to adopt a girl
child.
Apart from the above,
the parents should have
adequate resources to
provide good upbringing
for the child. The parents
should have good health
and should not be suffering
from any contagious
or terminal diseases or
any such mental or physical
condition which may
prevent them from taking
care of the child. Any orphan,
abandoned or surrendered
child can be adopted
following the due
procedure laid down in
the adoption guidelines,
if such child is declared
free for adoption by the
child welfare committee.
Children undergo all
health checkups before
the adoption process.
There are two adoption
centres in Mysuru
region. Both are in Mandya
district. One of them
is Vikasana Jogula Dattu
Seva Kendra on Bannur
Road and the other is
Janapada Seva Trust in
Melkote, Mandya district.
“YOU CANNOT FOOL THE PEOPLE”,
POOJARY DEMANDS CM’S RESIGNATION
Addressing a press
meet in Mangaluru on
Thursday, Poojary addressed
Siddaramaiah
and said, “The people of
this state are fed up with
you, and with the way you
are handling M K Ganapati’s
case.
In a brazen attack on
chief minister Siddaramaiah,
fellow Congress
party leader Janardhan
Poojary on Thursday July
14 demanded the CM’s
resignation over the suicide
of DySP M K Ganapati,
stating that people of
Karnataka were unhappy
with his administration.
“When a person is
about to die, he does
not cook up stories. The
world has seen the video
in which M K Ganapati
named minister K J
George, officers Pranab
Mohanty and A M Prasad
as being responsible for
his death. Chief Minister,
when three names
are in the dying declaration,
why are you not
registering FIR against
them? Why are you trying
to protect them?” he
questioned. “Is a person
more important to you
than your party? Protests
are happening in every
district and people are
fed up with you. It is also
shameful that you are
also using the electronic
media to taint the image
of Ganapati’s wife Pavana.
You did not register her
statement in the inquest
report, instead you took
his brother’s and father’s
statements. It is your duty
to register the spouse’s
statement when she is
alive. As a lawyer, you are
well aware of it. You are
protecting K J George in a
very shameless manner”.
“As the people have
cast their votes against
you in the SMS campaign,
you must step down from
the CM’s chair. If you have
any sort of belief in the
party and its principles,
you must step down and
resign,” he demanded.
“There are many leaders
in the party who can
become the Chief Minister.
From Gowda caste, along
with S M Krishna there is
DK Shivakumar, from SC
community there are Dr
Parameshwara and Mallikarjuna
Kharge, from
ST community there is
Ugrappa, from Lingayats
there are S R Patil and H K
Patil, and like these there
are many leaders. During
the recent reshuffle of the
cabinet, Siddaramaiah
sacked Vinay Kumar Sorake
for no reason”.
“Let the MLAs decide
and cast their votes to
elect their leader. Let it
not be alleged later that
even though people rejected
you, you continued
to be the CM,” he added.
Urging the Congress
high command to step in,
Poojary said, “If Siddaramaiah
does not resign, I
urge the party high command
to sack him and
make someone else the
chief minister. The high
command must think
about the party’s survival.
The country needs
Congress; this is the party
that brought Independence
to the nation.”
To a question on the
judicial probe ordered
by the Karnataka government
into Ganapati’s
suicide, he said, “I did
not expect you (Siddaramaiah)
to stoop so low
as to appoint a retired
judge, stating there is a
shortage of judges in the
Supreme Court. Have you
requested the Apex Court
for judges? If you had the
guts you could have handed
over the probe to the
sitting judge of the high
court or of the Supreme
Court. This would have
been a proper judicial inquiry
and I would have
appreciated it.
“You cannot fool the
people of the state. Times
have changed. You have
implemented many people-friendly
programmes,
but the black spot of this
case has covered all the
good you have done. If you
continue to do the same,
the people will reject you
in the next elections,” he
told Siddaramaiah.
on temporary basis. He alleged
that the VC made him wait for
more than 2 hours and when
he came out of his office, the VC
abused him in front of many people
saying that the candidate recommended
would destroy the
entire university.
Disturbed by the development,
Siddegowda lodged a
complaint at the Laxmiuram police
station. The police have given
an NCR copy to the complainant
and assured him.
Driver killed by a
speeding Cab
A car driver conversing over
mobile phone on the national
highway met his tragic end after
being hit by a speeding car near
Poinachi petrol bunk on Thursday,
July 14. Madhusudan (32)
of Kundakuhi Marunthadka is
the deceased. He was returning
to Kasaragod from temple town
of Kollur with fellow passengers.
He parked his car near the petrol
bunk in Poinachi and took a
stroll to have a conversation on
his mobile phone. At the same
time a speeding car hit him and
he was dragged to couple of meters.
Though he was rushed to a
nearby hospital immediately, he
did not survive and eventually
died due to grievous injuries.
Govt to extend deadlines
for bars and pubs
to 1am
The government is set to extend
the deadline for bars and
pubs till from 11.30 p.m. to 1 a.m.
on all days of the week. While
tipplers are cheering, residents
of Indiranagar and Koramangala
are opposing the move. Both residential
neighbourhoods have
a high concentration of restaurants
and pubs.
Members of RWAs say that
many of the outlets operating in
their neighbourhoods are illegal,
lack trade licenses and have
come up in violation of the BDA
zoning regulations. Earlier in July,
14 RWAs across Bengaluru got
together to oppose commercialisation
of their localities.
PREMATURE TERMINATION
Both ruling and opposition
parties had stamped
their feet over the issue
despite an all-party meet-
OF MONSOON SESSION?
ing convened by Assembly
Speaker Koliwad, which
failed to convince opposition
parties to withdraw
the agitation.
If the ongoing tug-of-war
between the ruling party
and the opposition over
DySP Ganapathi suicide
case continues, then the
Monsoon session is likely
to end abruptly by Friday
itself. The opposition parties
have decided to continue
overnight protest inside
assembly hall on Thursday
too, leaving the ruling party
DYSP KALLAPPA CASE: PRAVEEN KHANDYA
TO BE BOOKED UNDER GOONDA ACT
Bengaluru: Chief Minister
Siddaramaiah said that
Praveen Khandya, the Vishwa
Hindu Parishat (VHP)
leader who is one of the
five suspects in the suicide
of Chikkamagalur Deputy
Superintendent of Police
(DySP) Kallappa Handibag
will be booked under the
Goonda Act.
Speaking at the Assembly,
the CM said that the
government had sufficient
evidence to book Khandya
under the Goonda Act (the
Karnataka Prevention of
Dangerous Activities of
Bootleggers, Drug-Offenders,
Gamblers, Goondas,
Immoral Traffic Offenders,
Slum-Grabbers and Video
or Audio Pirates Act).
Khandya has as many as 32
cases pending against him.
Siddaramaiah further
said that the CID is investigating
the case and will
take action against everyone
involved in the case.
The Chief Minister pointed
out that it was not right to
compare Kallappa’s death
with MK Ganapathy’s demise.
Appropriate action
would be taken once the
CID submits the report, he
added.
Praveen Khandya’s anticipatory
bail plea hearing
was put off by the District
Sessions Court at Chikkamagaluru
in the abduction
case of H M Tejas involving
DySP Kallappa Handibag to
July 16. Khandya is still absconding.
Meanwhile, Siddaramaiah
has also assured that
they would look into the
possibility of offering a job
on compassionate grounds
to Kallappa’s wife but there
was no provision to give
compensation to the kin of
officers who commit suicide.
Anupama Shenoy case:
On the controversy relating
to the resignation of Anupama
Shenoy as DySP, he
said she had cited personal
reasons for quitting. “If she
was under any kind of pressure
from the liquor lobby,
she could have informed
her senior colleagues and
the government. But she
has not done that. It appears
that she does not
want to serve in the police
KARNATAKA CALLS FLOOD
ALERT AS KRISHNA OVERFLOWS
A flood alert has been
issued in many villages of
two border districts of Karnataka
after excess rain water
was released from Maharashtra
into the Krishna
River that flows through
the state as downstream.
“People living in villages
on the banks of Krishna and
low-lying areas in Bagalkot
and Belagavi districts have
been put on alert after Maharashtra
released excess
water into the river following
heavy rains in its
catchment areas” the official
from the state natural
disaster monitoring centre
said to media.
Bagalkot Deputy Commissioner
P.A. Meghannavar
advised the people in
Jamkhandi and Bilagi taluks
of the district to move
to safer places from the
river banks to avoid being
DEADLINE EVASION: AADHAR AND RATION
CARD LINKING STILL A DISTANT DREAM
Mysuru: The deadline
for linking ration cards
with Aadhaar numbers extended
a couple of times,
but the Mysuru district is
yet to achieve 100 per cent
linkage.
The Department of Food
and Civil Supplies has made
it compulsory for all ration
card holders in the State,
including those with Above
Poverty Line (APL) cards,
to link the cards with Aadhaar
numbers. This measure
was taken to remove
fake card holders and ensure
that only genuine beneficiaries
avail benefits under
the Public Distribution
System (PDS).
According to the data
provided by the department,
out of 607434 ration
card holders in the district,
588485 have linked their
card with Aadhaar number.
department,” he added.
Siddaramaiah denied that
the Ballari Superintendent
of Police had refused to
accept her papers for citing
the liquor lobby as the
reason for her resignation.
All efforts made by the government
to contact her and
convince her to withdraw
the resignation went in vain
as she remained inaccessible.
He also turned down
the demand by Opposition
parties to reinstate her.
Shikha case: Siddaramaiah
admitted that Congress
worker Marigowda
of water has been released
from Koyna Dam in Satara
district in the neighbouing
state into the river, measures
are being taken to
prevent any untoward incident
if more water is released,”
said Meghannavar
to the media from Bagalkot.
As the fourth biggest river
(1,300 km) in terms water
inflows and river basin
area in the country, Krishna
originates in the rich biodiversity
hotspot of Western
Ghats near Mahabaleshwar
in Maharashtra and passes
through Karnataka, Telangana
and Andhra Pradesh,
flowing out into the Bay of
Bengal. It is also a major
source of irrigation in the
four southern states.
Civil Supplies, Mysuru, said
that linking of ration cards
continued till the month
end, but due to the chaos it
may be ended on Friday.
The opposition has
demanded resignation
of Minister K J George in
connection to Ganapathi
suicide case and has also
pressed for CBI probe, both
of which have been rejected
by the ruling Congress
party. In the interim, the
high command called upon
George.
Meanwhile, the ruling
party managed to pass
three bills amid chaos in
the house.
abusing Mysuru Deputy
Commissioner C Shikha recently
was a mistake. “I
admit it is a mistake. If a
person belongs to my party
or any other, it is not proper
to treat an officer like
that. Many of the opposition
leaders said he is my
close aide. I know him since
1983. I took him to task later”
the Chief Minister said.
He reiterated that Shikha
is a good officer and hence
she has been serving in the
same post for the past three
years.
Bridges across the river
and its tributaries in
low-laying areas are overflowing
with rain water,
disrupting vehicular traffic
in the districts.
Though heavy rains receded
in coastal and south
interior areas of the state
since Tuesday, moderate to
light rains are likely to occur
in north interior parts
of the state during the next
24 hours, while one or two
spells of rain have been
forecast for Bengaluru and
its neighbourhood, with
strong surface winds under
cloudy sky.
TV, BHAJANS RING THE WALLS
OF ASSEMBLY AS OPPOSITION
CONTINUES OVER NIGHT STRIKE
After the opposition
parties declared overnight
strike in the Assembly hall
on Wednesday, the legislators
of BJP and JD(S)
watched television, sang
bhajans and had dinner together
on Wednesday night.
They began their day-night
dharna in both the Houses
of the legislature seeking
resignation of Bengaluru
Development Minister,
K J George on DySP Ganapathi
suicide case.
Bed sheets, blankets,
pillows and dinner were
provided by Secretariats
of the Assembly and Council
for their overnight stay.
The MLC’s were requested
to have dinner which had
chapati, rice dishes and
gravy, at a room adjoining
the Council hall.
The overnight stay at the
assembly hall by legislators
is nothing
new to Karnataka
assembly.
The opposition
had spent a
wholevc night
on March 17,
2015 seeking a
CBI probe into
the death of
IAS officer D K
Ravi. The then
KJP president B
S Yeddyurappa had staged
an overnight protest in November
2013 demanding
the extension of ‘Shaadi
Baghya’ scheme to all communities.
The session was
then held in Belagavi. Similarly,
opposition parties
had staged overnight protest
on July 12, 2010 over
the illegal mining issue.
“NO HOPE OF JUSTICE FROM CID OR THE JUDI-
CIARY” SAYS DYSP’S GANAPATI’S WIDOW
Kodagu: Addressing a
press conference at Kushalnagar
in the district on
Tuesday July 13, Pavana
said that she will be writing
to Prime Minister, Narendra
Modi, complaining against
the Congress government
in the state. She accused
the state government of
dithering in the matter of
taking action against those
who were responsible for
the death of Ganapati, who
had served state police department
efficiently and
diligently.
“I have no expectation of
getting justice from either
the criminal investigation
department (CID) probe or
the judicial probe expected
to be ordered by the government.
At the same time,
we demand for the judicial
probe to be conducted by
either Justice Santosh Hegde
or Justice Venkatachalaiah,
both of whom are
retired judges,” said DySP
Ganapati’s wife, Pavana.
“Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah,
is not registering
case against Minister
George, and two senior
officers of the police department
who caused the
death of my husband. CID
team, instead of recording
my statement, prepared a
report at their own whims
and fancies and the home
minister read out a report
in the assembly that was an
insult to me” she alleged.
The secretariat also deputed
medical staff, aside
from ensuring medicine
and ambulance services.
Jammers in both
the Houses were
switched off to
facilitate phone
calls by members.
Media was not
allowed into the
lobby. Both the
parties allowed
their women
legislators to go
home.
A majority
of the legislators
went home
to change or
get their night
clothes and returned.
However,
She stated that the entire
family is solidly backing her
in this issue and that she
draws courage and confidence
to complain to the
prime minister based on
this moral support.
George summoned by
high command: It is learnt
that in the light of political
upheavals in the state, Congress
high command has
asked minister, K J George,
to come to New Delhi. As
per information, he is leaving
to meet the leaders on
Thursday morning.
The name of the city
development minister has
emerged prominently in
the suicide case of deputy
superintendent of police,
Ganapati. Opposition parties,
who have been demanding
to drop George
from the ministry, have undertaken
round the clock
dharna in the legislature.
This has come as an embarrassment
both for the party
and its government in Karnataka.
Although the high command
has been briefed
about the development,
the top leaders want to get
explanations from George
personally before taking
a decision in the matter,
highly placed sources in the
party said.
CM misguiding house?
Some sources pointed out
that contrary to chief minister,
Siddaramaiah’s claim
JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy
did not take part in
the overnight dharna as he
left for Mysuru to resume
his son’s film shooting.
In November 2013, B
S Yeddyurappa, who was
then the KJP president had
staged an all-night dharna
for two nights demanding
an extension of ‘Shaadi
Baghya’ scheme to all
communities. Prior to that,
the Opposition parties had
staged a night dharna on
July 12, 2010 over the illegal
mining issue.
Dharna may end on Friday:
There was speculation
in political circles on
Wednesday that if the Opposition
continues with its
day-night dharna until Friday,
then the government
may get the budget proposals
and bills passed amid
the din and adjourn both
the Houses sine die. The
budget proposals have to
be passed before July 31 as
the legislature had only given
its approval for a fourmonth
vote-on-account in
March.
in the house on Wednesday
that DySP, Ganapati,
had not worked under inspector
general of police,
Pranab Mohanty. But, Ganapati
had in fact worked
under Mohanty twice.
When Mohanty was the
joint commissioner (west)
and additional police commissioner
in Bengaluru,
Ganapati had worked in Yeshwantpur
and Madiwala
police staions as inspector.
When Mohanty was working
as additional police
commissioner (crime), Ganapati
was working in Madiwala
station. During the
encounter death of a rowdy
named Prashant alias
Pachchi at Yeshwantpura in
2010, Pranab Mohanty had
investigated the allegation
that it was a fake encounter.
The case had then gone to
Lokayukta, by which time
Mohanty had been transferred
to Lokayukta. During
the controversial murder of
Rector, Fr Thomas, within
Yeshwantpura station limits,
Ganapati was inspector
of Yeshwantpur station
while Mohanty was joint
police commissioner.
Some claim that misleading
the assembly is
tantamount to breach of
privilege.
PADDY FOR NEEDY; CATHOLIC SABHA
TO GROW FOOD FOR POOR
Udupi: Catholic Sabha unit
at Sacred Heart Church in
Kolalgiri has started a unique
project of growing paddy in a
barren field and distributing
the rice after processing in
the mill among poor people
across all religions. Catholic
Sabha has ventured into such
an experiment for the first
time and intends to continue
it every year.
Nearly 60 members of
Catholic Sabha Kolalgiri led
by President Ashwin Roche
got down in the 55 cents barren
field near Arooru, Kenjebail
belonging to Vijayadas
Shetty on Sunday and planted
paddy saplings. The members
participated with vigour
and enthusiasm. The organization
has spent between Rs.
7,000 to Rs. 10,000 for the
purpose.
The members will participate
in cutting the full grown
paddy. The grass will be distributed
to the needy. After
which, paddy will be sent to
the rice mill for processing
and expected to yield nearly
10 quintals of rice. Udupi
diocese President Valerian
Fernandes, Zonal President
Steven Prakash Louis, visited
the fields and encouraged
the endeavour.

INDIA’S RETAIL
INFLATION SHOOTS UP
TO 1.62 PER CENT
Ballooning prices of food
articles pushed up India’s
annual wholesale price index
sharply to 1.62 per cent
for June from 0.79 per cent
for the month before. This
kept the inflation level in the
positive domain for the third
month after 17 months in the
negative.
The annual inflation for
potatoes, as per data on official
wholesale price index
26.61 per cent. Vegetable
prices were 16.91 per cent
higher. Significantly, the final
SATYENDAR JAIN’S
DAUGHTER QUITS AS
ADVISOR
After receiving flak from the
opposition, Delhi Health Minister
Satyendar Jain’s daughter
on Thursday resigned as advisor
to the Delhi government
for its ‘mohalla clinics’ project.
Jain, announcing the resignation
of his daughter Soumya
Jain, denied allegations of
nepotism in her appointment
in a non-executive post, and
said she wasn’t being paid any
money for the job.
A controversy erupted on
Wednesday after Soumya, 26,
was appointed as advisor to
Delhi’s Health Secretary for the
Aam Aadmi Mohalla Clinics.
Addressing media persons in
the national capital, Jain said,
“My daughter has resigned
from the post following the
controversy over her appointment.
Lashing out at the
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
for criticising her appointment,
Jain said, “There are a number
of examples of BJP’s leaders’
kin on plum posts. They should
set to commence
hearing of 21 AAP legislators
who were made
parliamentary secretaries
and are facing charges in
the Office of Profit case,
the Bharatiya Janata Party
(BJP) on Thursday said
the Aam Aadmi Party had
become synonymous with
‘misusing public money
and corruption’.
“This government has
become a synonym of misusing
public money, of corruption
and of benefitting
members of the party. In
the case of 21 parliamentary
secretary, public money
has been misused. There
are seven ministers and
you have made 21 parliamentary
secretaries for
them,” BJP leader Satish
The attempt came from Pakistan,
a country that covets
the territory of others; a
country that uses terrorism
as state policy towards that
misguided end; a country
that extols the virtues of
terrorists and that provides
sanctuary to UN-designated
terrorists; and a country
that masquerades its efforts
as support for human
rights and self-determination.”
The petitioner had
urged the court to direct
the police to register an
FIR against Akhlaq’s family
members on charges of
cow slaughter and animal
cruelty.
The petition claims that
two villagers from Bisada
namely Ranvir and Jatan,
saw Akhlaq and his son
Danish beat up a calf on
September 29 last year.
Akhlaq allegedly told them
that since the calf was attacking
the people, he was
going to tie up the animal at
Jaan Mohammed’s house.
The petition said another
villager Prem Singh
while passing by Akhlaq’s
house saw the latter holding
the calf down while his
brother Jaan Mohammad
was slitting the animal’s
throat.
Upadhyay told the media.
“Secondly, there is no
provision for it in the NCT
act. Definitely, the EC has
taken it seriously. I am
hopeful that EC will follow
constitutional norms and
will rule against these 21
MLAs.They should understand
that there is difference
between other states
and Delhi. Delhi is a UT
state and if there is a provision
in the laws let them
show it,” he added.
The EC will from today
begin personal hearing
AAP legislators, who are
facing the risk of disqualification
from the Assembly,
in the Office of Profit case.
According to reports,
the 21 AAP legislators had
sought a personal hearing
Akbaruddin further said,
“Pakistan is the same country
whose track record has
failed to convince the international
community to gain
membership of the Human
Rights Council in this very
Session of the UNGA. The
international community
has long seen through
such designs. Cynical attempts,
like the one this
morning, therefore, find
no resonance in this forum
or elsewhere in the United
Nations.”
Adviser to Pakistan
Prime Minister on Foreign
Affairs Sartaj Aziz had said,
“India cannot suppress the
voice of Kashmiris, who
are struggling for their just
right of self-determination,
by using brutal force and
committing human rights
violations in Kashmir.”
Expressing Pakistan’s
concern over the recent
spate of violence in Kashmir,
Aziz said: “Pakistan is
raising the issue of Indian
forces’ brutalities at international
fora, including
the United Nations Human
Rights Council, Organisation
of Islamic Cooperation,
the European Union and
others.”
According to the petitioner,
Akhlaq was on the
night of September 28
stopped near Bada transformer
by some residents,
while others reached his
house and found a vessel
with remains of some animal
and meat.
The petitioner claimed
Forces Tribunal after being
denied permanent commission
by the Indian Air
Force.
She is the first lady officer
to lead the Inter-Service
Guard of Honour which
was inspected by US President
Barack Obama at
Rashtrapati Bhavan in January
2015.
The Armed Forces Tribunal
has admitted the matter
and has sought IAF’s
response within 4 weeks,
Thakur’s Lawyer Sudhanshu
Pandey told the media.
before
the poll
b o d y
in their
reply to
a notice
by the
Election
Commission
in June.
The
Delhi
Government Bill to exclude
the post of Parliamentary
Secretary from the office
of profit has been refused
assent by the President,
raising questions over the
fate of 21 AAP MLAs, who
have been appointed to the
posts.
The AAP Government
had sought an amendment
“The international community
should come forward
and honour their
promises of resolving the
lingering Kashmir ‘dispute’
in accordance with
the United Nations resolutions,”
he added.
However, brushing aside
Aziz’s contention and firmly
asserting India’s commitment
to human rights,
Akbaruddin said, “As a
diverse, pluralistic and
tolerant society, India’s
commitment to the rule of
law, democracy and human
rights is enshrined in its
founding principles and we
remain strongly committed
to the promotion and protection
of all human rights
for all through pursuit of
dialogue and cooperation.”
Meanwhile, Pakistan
Foreign Secretary Aizaz
Ahmad Chaudhry briefed
the Islamabad-based Ambassadors
of the member
countries of the OIC
Contact Group on Jammu
and Kashmir - Azerbaijan,
Saudi Arabia, Turkey and
Niger - through its capital
on Wednesday morning
over the tense situation
in Kashmir and conveyed
Pakistan’s serious concern
over the killings of civilians
and violation of their
fundamental human rights
by Indian Security Forces.
(ANI)
the mob got out of control
and beat up Akhlaq and
his son Danish. Akhlaq was
beaten to death.
The petitioner had also
cited forensic report by
the Mathura forensic lab,
which said the meat samples,
were of an animal of
the cow progeny. (ANI)
The officer in her petition
says that the IAF’s
decision to reject her permanent
commission is “biased,
discriminatory, arbitrary
and unreasonable”.
The incident comes after
the Air Force recently allowed
women fighter pilots
for short service commission.
Last month, the IAF
scripted history by formally
commissioning its first
three women fighter pilots.
(ANI)
to the Delhi Members of
Legislative Assembly (Removal
of Disqualification)
Act, 1997 through which it
had sought “retrospective”
exemption for the parliamentary
secretaries from
disqualification provisions.
Lieutenant Governor
Najeeb Jung forwarded the
Bill to the Centre, which in
turn was sent to the President
with comments. (ANI)
SC TO HEAR BANKS PLEA AGAINST
VIJAY MALLYA ON JULY 18
The Supreme Court said
on Thursday that it would
hear the contempt petition
filed by a consortium of
banks against businessman
Vijay Mallya on July 18.
It may be recalled that in
April, the apex court had directed
Mallya to disclose all
of his assets held by him and
his family. The consortium
of banks had also rejected
his offer to repay Rs 4,000
crores as settlement of all
debts. The one-time owner
of Kingfisher Airlines owes
17 banks, including the State
Bank of India, over Rs 9,000
crore, including interest.
One time Member of
Parliament, Mallya is under
investigation by various
agencies, including the Enforcement
Directorate (ED)
and the Serious Fraud Investigation
Office (SFIO), which
probes white collar crimes.
Last month, a special
Prevention of Money Laundering
Act (PMLA) court in
Mumbai had declared Mallya
a proclaimed offender in a
loan default case.
On March 13, Mallya
claimed that the consortium
had already recovered Rs 2,
494 crore from Kingfisher
Airlines since 2013. On June
11, the Enforcement Directorate
had attached properties
worth Rs 1,411 crore of
Mallya and UB Ltd in connection
with its money laundering
probe in the IDBI Bank
loan default case.
Mallya left for the United
Kingdom on March 2 using
his diplomatic passport
which was later revoked by
the Ministry of External Affairs.
OWAISI ACCEPTS LAPSES ON AIMIM’S PART IN
FILING DOCUMENTS WITH MAHA EC
All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul
Muslimeen (AIMIM)
chief Asaduddin Owaisi had
accepted the lapses on part
of his party in filing the requisite
documents with the
state election commission,
which led the latter to cancel
AIMIM’s registration as a political
party in Maharashtra.
“The norms are that a
political party must submit
regular accounts and other
details. Unfortunately, there
have been lapses on our part.
After we received a show
cause notice, we had given
a notice to the Maharashtra
Owaisi said there was a
delay by the AIMIM to submit
the documents and they
have written to the commission
to ‘condone their lapses’.
state election
commission
requesting
them
to condone
our lapses,
“Owaisi told
the media.
“Then we
also submitted
our documents,
but
I think it was
too late. We will definitely
appeal to the commission
and in future we will abide
by all prescribed norms,” he
added.
The Maharashtra Election
Commission earlier in
the day cancelled AIMIM’s
registration as a state political
party for failing to file its
income tax and funds details.
The State Election Commission
reportedly took this
decision after the AIMIM did
not respond to notices sent
to the party asking it to submit
the reports.
The cancelation of its registration
essentially means
that the commission has
barred AIMIM from contesting
the state civic polls. (ANI)
SC VERDICT A LESSON FOR GOVERNORS TO
NOT ACT AS BJP, RSS MEMBERS: CONGRESS
Asserting that Prime
Minister Narendra Modi
-led BJP was running the
government in a ‘dictatorial’
and ‘anti-democratic’
manner, the Congress party
on Thursday said the
Supreme Court verdict to
restore Nabam Tuki-led
Government in Arunachal
Pradesh was a lesson for
the Governors to abide
by the Constitution and
not behave like BJP or RSS
workers.
“The Modi Government
is a dictatorial government.
Modi Government does not
believe in democracy. What
happened in Arunachal and
Uttarakhand was killing
the very idea of democracy.
Now, the Supreme Court
has given relief. This clearly
shows that the Modi Government
is anti-democratic
and the SC has forced
this government to leave
its dictatorial fashion of
working,” Congress leader
Shobha Oza told the media.
“It has reminded them
the Constitutional position
of Governors, and that they
should behave as expected,
and not as a BJP or RSS
member,” she added.
Nabam Tuki on Wednesday
evening took charge as
Chief Minister of the state
at Arunachal Bhavan here
in Delhi.
Hours after the Supreme
Court ordered the restoration
of his government, a
jubilant Tuki met Congress
president Sonia Gandhi
at her official 10, Janpath
residence on Wednesday
evening.
The Congress president
during the meeting, which
was also attended by party
vice-president Rahul
Gandhi, asked Tuki to take
everybody on board and
strengthen the grand old
party in the northeastern
state.
In a major setback to the
BJP-ruled Centre, the apex
court earlier on Thursday
quashed “message
and direction” issued by
Arunachal Pradesh Governor
Jyoti Prasad Rajkhowa
and restored status quo as
on December 15 when Congress’
Nabam Tuki was the
chief minister. The Bharatiya
Janata Party (BJP),
on the other hand, downplayed
the Congress’ accusations
of toppling elected
governments and said the
Arunachal Pradesh verdict
is not a setback for the Centre.
A five-judge constitution
bench pronounced the verdict
on a bunch of petitions
dealing with discretionary
powers of the governor to
summon or advance the assembly
session.
Stating the governor’s
direction on conducting
assembly proceedings is
unconstitutional, the apex
court set aside all steps and
decision taken by the legislative
assembly pursuant to
the governor’s December
9th last year order and said
they are unsustainable.
Arunachal Pradesh had
been under President’s
Rule since January 26.
Tuki-led Congress government
was dismissed following
days of turmoil after
21 of its 47 lawmakers
rebelled against the chief
minister.
The Congress, which
had 47 MLAs seats in the
60-member assembly, suffered
a jolt when 21 of its
lawmakers rebelled. Eleven
BJP MLAs backed the rebels
in the bid to upstage the
government. Later, 14 rebel
Congress MLAs were disqualified.
GYM INSTRUCTOR ARRESTED FOR STABBING
LIVE-IN PARTNER
A gym instructor allegedly
stabbed his live-in
partner 32 times in a house
in sector 73, leaving her in
a critical condition, police
said on Thursday.
The accused Varun Goyal
(28), who runs a gym in
Ghaziabad, has been arrested.
Varun had heated arguments
with the woman, a
divorcee, as she was apparently
pressurising him for
marriage.
SHO Dinesh Yadav said
Varun stabbed her 32
times with a kitchen knife.
The neighbours heard her
screams of help and informed
police. The police
team found the woman in
a pool of blood and rushed
her to a Noida hospital
from where she was rushed
to LNJP in New Delhi in a
critical condition.
The victim is five years
younger to Varun and had
rented the house a year
ago. Varun had moved in
the house as a live in partner,
police said.
The woman’s home town
is in Gorakhpur and she
works in private company
at sector 63. She was earlier
living with her brother in
Indirapuram. She befriended
Varun in the gym and
thereafter shifted to the
Noida sector 73 house.
An attempt to murder
case has been filed against
Varun on the basis of a
complaint of the woman’s
brother. (PTI)

UKRAINE CRISIS: IM-
PUNITY ‘PERVASIVE’ IN
EAST, SAYS UN
A climate of “pervasive
impunity” in eastern
Ukraine has meant very
few people have been held
accountable for a catalogue
of alleged summary executions,
the UN says. The
Office of the High Commissioner
for Human Rights
(OHCHR) says some of the
cases could amount to war
crimes. It investigated the
disappearances and deaths
of at least 47 people in areas
held by Russian-backed
separatists. The report also
lists 29 cases in government-controlled
territory.
Almost 9,500 people have
died in eastern Ukraine
since conflict broke out in
2014. Pro-Russian rebels
seized swathes of Ukraine’s
eastern regions of Donetsk
and Luhansk, after Russia
annexed the Ukrainian peninsula
of Crimea, weeks after
the ousting of Ukraine’s
President, Viktor Yanukovych.
NO TALKS WITH RUS-
SIA ABOUT LEAVING
POWER: ASSAD
Syrian President Bashar
al-Assad has said Russia
has never talked to him
about leaving power. “They
never said a single word
regarding this,” Mr. Assad
told NBC News, referring
to conversations with President
Vladimir Putin and
officials. He said “only the
Syrian people” would decide
“when to come and
when to go”. The US, which
accuses Syria’s leader of responsibility
for atrocities,
says he must go as part of
a political transition to end
the conflict there. Russia
has given the Syrian government
strong diplomatic
and military backing in its
fight against rebels, but Mr.
Putin has said only a political
solution can resolve the
conflict.
SEA RULING:
PHILIPPINES
The Philippines has said
China should respect an
international tribunal’s
rejection of its claims in
the South China Sea. In a
statement, it said Foreign
Affairs Secretary Perfecto
Yasay would raise the issue
at a major two-day Asia-Europe
summit starting on
Friday, attended by China’s
Premier Li Keqiang. A UNbacked
tribunal ruled on
Thursday that there was no
legal basis to China’s claims
in the South China Sea. China
has vowed to ignore the
ruling. It says the panel has
no jurisdiction and its activities
in the region will
not be affected.
US SENTENCES
CHINESE HACKER FOR
STEALING MILITARY
INFORMATION
A Chinese businessman
who pleaded guilty to
hacking sensitive military
information has been sentenced
to nearly four years
in prison in the US. Su Bin
admitted collaborating
with hackers in the Chinese
military to steal data from
US defence companies between
2008 and 2014. He
was arrested in Canada
in 2014 and extradited to
the US. The Chinese government
has repeatedly
denied any involvement in
hacking foreign companies
or governments. “Su Bin’s
sentence is a just punishment
for his admitted role
in a conspiracy with hackers
from the People’s Liberation
Army Air Force to
illegally access and steal
sensitive US military information,”
U.S. CONGRESS PANEL DEMANDS
CUTTING OF ALL ASSISTANCE TO PAKISTAN
A U.S. congressional panel
has demanded cutting off all
U.S. assistance to Pakistan to
persuade Islamabad to act
against the Afghan Taliban
groups, who allegedly uses the
country’s territory to launch
operations into Afghanistan.
Reports suggest that some
U.S. lawmakers and witnesses
also suggested declaring
Islamabad, a state sponsor of
terrorism and imposing economic
sanctions if it does not
eliminate the alleged terrorist
safe havens on its territory.
At Tuesday’s hearing - “Pakistan:
produced more heat
than expected.
SANKAT MOCHAN: RESCUE TEAM LANDS IN
JUBA, SWARAJ CALLS ON INDIANS TO MOVE
OUT IMMEDIATELY
With the ‘Sankat Mochan’rescue
team landing in
Juba, External Affairs Sushma
Swaraj on Thursday called on
all the stranded Indian nationals
to move out quickly, adding
that the evacuation might not
be possible if the situation deteriorates.
“South Sudan - My colleague
@Gen_VKSingh has
landed in Juba to evacuate
Indian nationals from there.
All Indian nationals - We have
sent two aircrafts. This is the
right time. Pls move out of
South Sudan,” Swaraj said in a
series of tweets.
Adding that in case the situation
deteriorates the Indian
nationals will not be evacuated,
she reiterated her call to
move out as quickly as possible,
adding that two aircrafts
are waiting to carry them out.
Salmon as saying.
“Patsies chumps. Most
Americans see out of this and
yet our so-called leaders do
not really get it,” he added.
Former U.S. ambassador to
Kabul, Baghdad and the United
Nations, Zalmay Khalilzad
said, “If I may use an undiplomatic
term, we have been
patsies.”
Khalilzad, who is an ethnic
Afghan, said that Pakistani
leaders had gamed the American
system for decades.
As per the report, the victim
had hired a taxi from
driver stopped the vehicle
near a CNG pump on Ring
Road and forced him out of
the car.
The accused then took him
to an empty plot where he
raped him.
“We have registered an FIR
in the case under Section 377
of the PPC and the matter is
being investigated,” the official
said and added that the
incident took place the night
“Indians in South Sudan
- Pls move out. We have
sent two aircrafts for you. If
situation worsens, we will
not be able to evacuate you.
Please ask all your relatives
and friends in South Sudan to
please make use of this opportunity
and move,” she further
tweeted.
Meanwhile, Operation
Sankat Mochan is in full swing
as the rescue team headed by
Minister of State for External
Affairs V.K. Singh landed here
and the process for the evacuation
of the stranded Indians
began.
“Check-in formalities begin
for evacuation as the first C-17
expected to land in Juba soon,”
MEA spokesperson Vikas
Swarup tweeted.
The first IAF C17 Globemaster
Following the comment,
which was broadcast live on
the internet, the Pakistan embassy
in Washington clarified
that Washington and Islamabad
were still allies and there
is “positive
Counter terrorism cooperation
between the two countries”.
Ambassador Khalilzad and
Bill Roggio, senior editor of
the Long War Journal, called
for cutting aid to Islamabad
and placing it on the list of
state sponsor of terrorism.
said that he was killed in Syria.
Regarded by Pentagon as
Islamic State’s “minister of
war”, Abu Omar al-Shishani is
said to have died in a U.S. air
strike in Syria.
During that time, the report
was confirmed by both
the high-level officials in
Washington as well as the Syrian
Observatory for Human
Rights.
The ISIS propaganda
agency Amaq on Wednesday
claimed that Shishani had
been killed in combat operation
in the Iraqi city of Shirqat,
before and
the FIR
was registered
on
Tuesday.
ASP
Hassan
Afzal said
the man
(victim)
provided
enough clues for the police to
nab the suspect within a short
period.
“Later, the victim identified
to the Indian Air Force (IAF)
who will be carrying out the
operation.
“We are launching OP
Indian nationals from South
Sudan. My colleague @Gen_
will be accompanied
by Secretary Amar Sinha, JS
Satbir Singh and Director Anjani
Kumar. Our Ambassador
is South Sudan Srikumar Menon
and his team is organising
this operation on the ground,”
External Affairs Minister
Sushma Swaraj said in a series
of tweets.
Two IAF C17’s departed for
South Sudan around 5 am today
with VK Singh leading the
operation.
The developments were
set in motion after Bollywood
actor Akshay Kumar appealed
to Swaraj to help the Indian
nationals stuck in the warstruck
area.
“.@SushmaSwaraj Ma’am
request for speedy measures
and actions to evacuate Indians
stranded in Sudan.
Prayers with them. #SaveIndiansInJuba,”
Kumar said in a
tweet.
In response to this, Swaraj
said, “Akshay Kumar ji - Pl do
not worry. We are evacuating
Indian nationals from Juba
(South Sudan).”
“At the end they are treating
us like chumps. And we
are more than willing to keep
on handing out money to Pakistan,”
Roggio said.
He added that Pakistan’s
ability to manipulate U.S. legislators
and policy makers
ensured assistance to Islamabad.
(ANI)
south of Mosul, source said.
Meanwhile, the officials at
the Pentagon said that they
were aware of the report, but
could not confirm or deny it.
Head of the British-based
Syrian Observatory for Human
Rights, Rami Abdelrahman,
said that Shishani had
been wounded in March and
died soon after in the countryside
east of Raqqa.
Shishani was one of the
most wanted militants under
a U.S. programme that offered
up to $5 million bounty on
him. (ANI)
the offender and the latter
also confessed to the crime
during initial interrogation”
Afzal added. (ANI)
Swaraj said the evacuation
scheme is fully ready and if
the situation worsens then
the government will not delay
and immediately evacuate Indians
from there.
“The situation in South Sudan
deteriorated suddenly in
the past three days. We have
constituted a task force to constantly
study the emerging situation
in South Sudan and to
closely tab on the occurrences
there. The task force held
a meeting in the morning,”
Swaraj told the media.
“There are around 600 Indians
in South Sudan, of them
450 are in Juba (capital city of
South Sudan) and nearly 150
are outside Juba. At present,
the fighting is taking place in
Juba,” she added.
South Sudan’s President
Salva Kiir has ordered a ceasefire
after days of intense fighting
in Juba left more than 150
dead and many more injured
since fighting broke out on
Thursday.
The ceasefire announcement
came as United Nations
Secretary General Ban Ki-
Moon called on the Security
Council to impose an “immediate
arms embargo” and
targeted sanctions on leaders
and commanders blocking
implementation of the peace
deal.
There was renewed fighting
between the government
and former rebel forces since
Thursday in Juba.
The latest exchanges were
apparently sparked by a
shootout between President
Kiir’s and Vice President Riek
Machar’s bodyguards. (ANI)
WE PAKISTANIS SHOULD SUPPORT OUR
KASHMIRI BROTHERS: HAFIZ SAEED
Jamaat-ud-Dawa chief
Hafiz Saeed said that the
ongoing protests on the Indian
side of Kashmir would
be intensified and warned
that the deaths in the region
would not be in vain.
Addressing a meet in
Lahore on Tuesday, Saeed
said, “This time the people
in Kashmir are on streets.
This protest has become a
mass movement. All groups
in Kashmir have united. All
the wings of the Hurriyat
have become one. The Muttahida
Jihad Council and
all other groups have come
on to the same platform.
Those who have died in
Kashmir, their deaths will
not be in vain.”
More than 30 people
were killed and several
others injured, with both
people and security forces
turning hostile in protest-related
violence in the
Kashmir Valley, after Kashmiris
took to the streets to
condemn the killing of Hizbul
Mujahideen commander
Burhan Muzaffar Wani.
Saeed asserted that the
people in Pakistan should
support Kashmiris.
“We Pakistani should
support our Kashmiri
brothers. Their sweat,
blood is our sweat and
blood. Their way of thinking
is also our way of thinking,”
he said.
“We in Pakistan will
intensify the movement
which is taking place in
Kashmir. When Pakistan
join hands in this movement
with Kashmir then
Kashmir will become part
of Pakistan,” he added.
Saeed, who is the prime
accused in the 26/11 Mumbai
terror attack case, told
people here to make the
movement a national one.
“We have to take the
movement to national level
so that even the government
of Pakistan understands
the matter,” he said.
UK GETS SECOND WOMAN PRIME
MINISTER- THERESA MAY
Theresa May emerged
from the Buckingham Palace
on Thursday as United
Kingdom’s second female
Prime Minister, shortly
after David Cameron tendered
his resignation.
According to the sources,
May paid the traditional
visit to the Queen to be
invited to form a government
and went to the palace
to “kiss hands” with the
Queen, as the ceremony is
known.
Cameron, had earlier
congratulated May as he
left 10 Downing Street for
the last time with his wife
and children.
Addressing the waiting
media outside No 10
before heading to Buckingham
Palace to formally
resign, Cameron said, “It’s
not been easy journey, and
of course we’ve not got every
decision right,” he said,
alongside his wife, Samantha,
and children Nancy, Elwen
and Florence.
Meanwhile, in her first
address as Prime Minister,
May said that the mission
of her government is to
forge a positive role for UK
in the world as it leaves the
European Union.
“When we take the big
calls, we will not listen to
the mighty but you. We
will do everything we can
to help everyone. We’ll
make Britain a country that
doesn’t work for privileged
few but everyone of us. And
together we’ll build a better
Britain. When it comes
to taxes, we’ll prioritise not
the wealthy, but you. When
it comes to opportunity, we
won’t entrench the advantages
of the fortunate few,
we will do everything we
can to help anybody, whatever
your background, to
go as far as your talents will
take you,” she said. (ANI)
INDIAN-US COUPLE TO PAY USD
7.75 MN FOR HEALTHCARE
An Indian-American
couple, who owned a mobile
diagnostic testing company
in New Jersey, has
been ordered by a US court
to pay USD 7.75 million for
committing a multi-million
health care fraud.
Kirtish N Patel and Nita
K Patel, both aged 53, had
earlier pleaded guilty to
healthcare fraud.
The government’s civil
complaint had alleged that
they created fraudulent
diagnostic test reports,
forged physician signatures
on these reports and
then billed Medicare for the
fraudulent reports.
They also billed Medicare
for neurological tests
that they conducted without
the required physician
supervision, the Justice Department
said.
The lawsuit was filed
under whistleblower, provisions
of the False Claims
Act, which allows private
citizens with knowledge of
fraud to bring civil actions
on behalf of the government
and to share in any
recovery.
The False Claims Act also
permits the government to
intervene in such lawsuits,
as it has done in this case.
The whistleblower who
brought the misconduct to
the government’s attention
will receive 15 to 25 per
cent of the more than USD
7.7 million recovered by
the government.
According to the documents
filed in the case and
statements made in the
court
Biosound Medical Services
Inc and Heart Solutions in
New Jersey, which were
mobile diagnostic companies
and approved medicare
providers.
As per court documents,
Biosound technicians
would travel to the office
of a primary care physician
in the New York and New
Jersey area to conduct diagnostic
testing.
Biosound was responsible
for sending the tests
to a reading physician, an
appropriate specialist who
would interpret the results.
“After the reading physician
prepared a report, Biosound
was responsible for
providing it to the referring
physician.
Biosound was paid millions
of dollars by Medicare
and other payors for
the diagnostic testing, the
reading physician’s interpretation
of the results and
the reports, the prosecutors
said.
Kirtish admitted to
fraudulently interpreting
and writing diagnostic
reports produced by Biosound
despite having no
medical license and knowing
that the reports would
be used by the referring
physicians to make important
patient treatment decisions.
Nita assisted her husband
in forging physician
signatures on the fraudulently
produced reports to
make them appear legitimate.
The couple admitted
falsely representing to
Medicare that the neurological
testing performed
by Biosound was being supervised
by a licensed neurologist,
the Justice Department
said.
According to reports,
more than half of the diagnostic
reports generated by
Biosound between October
2008 and June 2014 were
never actually reviewed or
interpreted by a physician.
Nita and Kirtish were
paid more than USD
4,386,133.75 by Medicare
and private insurance companies
for the fraudulent
reports, which they used
for personal expenses, including
multiple residences
and luxury vehicles, it said
NADA CONFIRMS NO DOPING VIOLATION
FROM INDIAN ATHLETES IN RIO OLYMPICS
National Anti-Doping
Agency (Nada) Director
General Navin Agarwal on
Wednesday said that all
the Rio Olympics bound
sportspersons have undergone
testing for banned
substances and they are
dope-free.
Agarwal, however, conceded
that there were issues
regarding testing of a
few Rio-bound sportspersons
as they were not available
at their “whereabouts”
provided by them as mandated
under the Anti-Doping
Administration Management
System (ADAMS)
of the World Anti-Doping
Agency but Nada was able
to get their testing done later
on.
“All Rio-bound athletes
have been tested. Some of
the athletes have been tested
at least once, some have
been tested twice and some
thrice. Some athletes could
not be tested on the second
occasion because they were
training abroad and in their
case they have been tested
at least once,” Agarwal, who
joined last month, told the
media.
“For those training
abroad, we have hired some
agencies to collect samples
there (abroad) and we have
tested the samples of all
these athletes,” he said.
“I am quite confident
that the Indian contingent
at the Rio Olympics will
have no doping violation
by any of them this time.
We also hope there will be
no doping violation from
other countries. Since we
are very strict as far as our
athletes are concerned, we
also expect same strictness
from other countries so that
there is fair play,” said the
1986 batch senior IPS officer
of Jammu and Kashmir
cadre.
The Indian contingent
at the 2004 Olympics was
rocked by doping as two
weightlifters -- Sanamacha
Chanu and Pratima Kumari
-- tested positive for
banned substances while
another lifter Monika Devi
was barred from leaving
for 2008 Olympics just a
day before she was to board
the Beijing flight. There was,
however, no such incident
prior and during the 2012
London Olympics.
Asked specifically if some
sportspersons have resisted
from undergoing tests
by not being present at their
“whereabouts”, Agarwal answered
in the affirmative.
“There have been a few
cases, though I cannot disclose
them. In such cases
we issue notices and three
such whereabouts failure
is treated as a doping violation.
“There have been instances
of one or two
whereabouts failures regarding
a few Rio-bound
sportspersons but till now
there is no instance of three
whereabouts failures and
so there is no doping violation
so far,” he said.
Sportspersons included
in the reserve testing
pool need to provide their
‘whereabouts’ and they
will have to be available for
dope testing at specified
times.
Agarwal also confirmed
that discus thrower Seema
Punia had undergone dope
test recently at her “hometown”.
Seema had recently
cancelled a press conference
citing an impending
BUSINESS
dope test.
“She (Seema) had given
her consent for a dope
test and it was organized
in one of those days in her
hometown. I don’t want
to say further on this but a
dope test was conducted
on her. A dope test does not
take much time and there
was nothing extraordinary
in conducting a dope test,”
said the Nada chief who
had been Director General
Youth Services and Sports
in Jammu and Kashmir.
India was recently
named as the third most
doped country in the world
in a report published by
Wada for cases related to
2014 and Agarwal said it
was not a happy situation
and he would work to get
the country rid of that tag.
“Nada is still in its infancy
and some of our procedures
have been copied
from WADA. As a national
agency, there is still a lot
to do. We also want to get
rid of this tag of third most
doped country in the world.
We are not happy with this
situation. As a national policy,
we are committed to
dope-free sports,” he said.
“First, we have to spread
awareness that athletes
should not use doping as
shortcut to success. It is
harmful to their health as
well to their career. We
want to educate the athletes
regarding this on a massive
scale and bring awareness
so that we can prevent doping,”
he said.
“Secondly, we want to
establish regional offices of
the Nada so that it covers
the length and breadth of
the country to have meaningful
impact of anti-doping
programs.
PREZ ASKS DARJEELING TEA INDUSTRY
TO MAINTAIN QUALITY
President Pranab
Mukherjee on Thursday
asked the exporters of
Darjeeling tea to maintain
quality and its brand name
while complying with global
norms.
Addressing the annual
general meeting of Darjeeling
Tea Association, he
said tea production is an
important element of the
country’s planned economic
development.
“Currently India is the
second largest producer of
tea next to China. There are
many other countries like
Kenya and Sri Lanka which
produce tea.
“Among all teas, Darjeeling
tea requires a special
mention as it occupies a
very unique place particularly
for the connoisseurs,”
Mukherjee said as he asked
the producers to uphold
the quality and brand name
of Darjeeling tea.
The total tea production
in India is nine lakh tons
annually in comparison
with China that produces a
million tons of tea.
The President said, Darjeeling
Tea has the Geographical
Indication (GI)
tag, which is to protect the
rights of special products in
specified countries, and it
was essential that producers
comply with the formalities
as it would be advantageous
for them.
The tea estates in Darjeeling
have reportedly
been ailing for long and
incurring losses due to various
accounts. The Darjeeling
tea industry provides
employment to one lakh
workers, including 40,000
seasonal workers.
He complemented the
Darjeeling Tea Association
for having upheld the
unique brand name of ‘Darjeeling
Tea’ which is a welcome
item on the breakfast
tables of many people.
Mukherjee, who is on a
three-day visit to Darjeeling,
also appreciated that
PREZ ASKS DARJEELING TEA
INDUSTRY TO MAINTAIN QUALITY
A digital student incubator,
claimed to be the world’s first,
has gone online with Chief Minister
Pinarayi Vijayan unveiling
SV.CO, the digital makeover of
Startup Village, designed to help
college-goers take their first step
in entrepreneurship.
“The government’s allocation
for startups at Rs 300 crore is
the highest to date in Kerala and
higher than that of the Centre’s
Department of Science and Technology,”
the Chief Minister said at
a function on Wednesday.
Vijayan also announced a fivestep
strategy for students, world
class infrastructure on par with
Silicon Valley, world class communication
infrastructure, world
class talent pipeline, world class
funding infrastructure and world
class incubators in PPP model
like Startup Village.
“The state will fund 1,000
startups every year with Rs two
lakh for converting ideas to prototypes.
The best prototypes will
be given Rs one crore interest
free loan to convert the prototype
into a successful startup,” he said.
SV.CO, the world’s first digital
business incubation platform
that constitutes the second phase
of Startup Village, is India’s first
PPP model technology incubator
set up in Kochi in 2012.
During its first phase 2012-
15, it supported more than 500
startups and helped create 3,000
jobs.
With SV.CO, the Startup Village
will scale up its activities
massively by reaching out to
five million students in 3,500
engineering colleges across the
country by providing them a
completely digital incubation
framework, ranging from application
for admission to teaching,
mentoring and graduation, said
Currently, sportspersons
from the eastern and southern
region of the country
faced inconvenience while
coming to appear before
the disciplinary and appeal
panels of the Nada in New
Delhi.
“Thirdly, we want to
make Nada the hub of dope
testing and anti-doping
activities in South Asian
region. Currently also samples
come to Nada from
neighboring countries for
testing. We want to be leader
in South Asia in eliminating
doping.”
Agarwal was candid in
admitting that to realize
these aims a drastic increase
in budgetary allocation
will be required.
“The organization needs
a lot of expansion and budgetary
allocation is very
meager. Earlier, the NADA
was testing 2000 samples
a year and now the target
is 5000 samples a year. But
the budget is still the same
and how will it be possible.
This needs to be changed.
“Nutrition supplement
per se is not harmful if it
contains proteins, minerals
and vitamins. Certainly, an
athlete needs nutritional
supplement. But it should
not contain the doping substances
and willy-nilly an
athlete may take it thinking
that it may strengthen
his muscles but actually he
is getting these dope substances
artificially.
“If he gets tested he will
test positive but he will say
he has never used banned
substances and that the test
may be wrong. He is not
even aware that these products
may contain banned
substances. The culprit is
the contaminated supplement
which has not been
declared in the label which
substance it contains.”
(PTI)
various cultural, minority
and linguistic groups are
living together in Darjeeling.
“The essence of Indian
culture and civilisation is
synthesis. Acceptance of
diversity and celebrating
plurality, underlining the
unity amidst rich diversity
are the true of characteristics
of India.
“I find that Darjeeling is
being melted in a pot and
emerging as a symbol of
this process of synthesis
action,” he said.
West Bengal, Governor
Keshari Nath Tripathi and
other dignitaries were
present during the function.
(PTI)
to the media.
It will thus provide opportunities
to brilliant students in
far-flung cities and towns who
may not have access to physical
DAVIS CUP HIT BY STAR PULLOUT
The Davis Cup quarter-finals
take place this weekend
but are missing the
superstar pulling power of
Novak Djokovic and Andy
Murray and potentially
overshadowed by Rafael
Nadal’s last-ditch attempt
to get to the Rio Olympics.
World number one
Djokovic and newly
crowned Wimbledon winner
Murray had been expected
to play in the quarter-final
between Serbia
and defending champions
Great Britain.
But Djokovic pulled out
of the tie after his shock
Wimbledon third-round
exit to America’s Sam Querrey,
the Serb’s earliest loss at
a Grand Slam event in nine
years.
Murray, the world number
two, is still officially
listed in the British team
for the Friday-Sunday tie on
outdoor clay in Belgrade.
However, the 29-yearold
is expected to watch
from the sidelines as he
rests after his Wimbledon
triumph and ahead of a
packed summer schedule
which includes the Olympics
next month as well as
the US Open.
“Andy has to look after
his body and his mind. He’s
got his eyes set on getting
some rest and really making
a big push
for the Olympics,
US Open and
beyond,” Britain
team captain
Leon Smith told
the media.
The British
challenge will be led instead
by world number 67 Kyle
Edmund and the 240thranked
James Ward.
In the absence of Djokovic
and Serb number two
Viktor Troicki, world number
81 Dusan Lajovic will
lead 2010 champions Serbia.
Fourteen-time major
winner Nadal and his Spanish
team do not feature in
the World Group quarter-finals,
but the 30-year-old
still faces a key weekend as
he hears whether or not the
International Tennis Federation
(ITF) will give him the
go-ahead to take part in Rio.
Nadal hasn’t travelled
to Romania for the Euro/
Africa zone play-off as he
continues to recover from
a wrist injury which forced
a withdrawal from the
French Open and caused
him to Miss Wimbledon.
TENNIS ON GRASS MORE TECHNICAL, TEAM THAT
ADAPTS QUICKER WILL HAVE EDGE: LEANDER PAES
With wet conditions
caused by incessant rain
adding to the challenge,
veteran Indian tennis star
Leander Paes today said the
team which adapts quicker
will have the edge in the
Davis Cup Asia-Oceania
Group-I tie between India
and South Korea starting
here tomorrow.
TRIPURA ASKS IOC TO DISPATCH FUEL
BY FREIGHT TRAIN
Facing acute crisis of
petrol and diesel due to the
damaged Assam-Agartala
National Highway (NH8)
following heavy rains and
water logging, the Tripura
government has proposed
IOC to dispatch fuel by
freight train.
“NH8 is damaged in a
long stretch at Karimganj
in the neighbouring Assam
due to rain and water
logging. It is closed since
almost two months as a
result of which oil tankers
cannot enter the state. So,
we have sent a proposal
to IOCL to dispatch fuel by
freight trains,” state Food
and Civil supply minister
the one who adjusts to these
conditions faster, is going to
have a big advantage,” Paes
said after the draw ceremony
on Thursday.
The weather was inclement
in Chandigarh on
Thursday and according to
the local MeT Department’s
Director, Surinder Paul;
more rains are likely to occur
in the city over the next
2-3 days. Ram Kumar Ramnathan
will take on Seong-
Chan Hong, ranked more
than 200 places below him,
in the first singles match on
Friday.
JEWELLERY STOCKS GET SHINE BACK,
GAIN UPTO 10%
Jewellery stocks on
Thursday jumped by up to
10 per cent after the government
increased excise
duty exemption limit for
the small scale industry to
Rs 10 crore from Rs 6 crore
that could bring relief to
gold jewelers.
On Wednesday, it also
decided to waive the levy
on sale of traded goods and
relaxed other procedural
norms.
Bhanulal Saha told the media.
He requested IOCL to
take up the matter with the
NF Railway and arrange to
send fuel without delay as
the state was facing acute
crisis.
Earlier last month, Tripura
PWD minister Badal
Chowdhury requested the
Centre and the Assam government
expedite the repair
work of a portion of
the highway as thousands
of trucks carrying essential
commodities for Tripura
were stranded there.
Shares of Tara Jewels
soared 10.21 per cent,
Shree Ganesh Jewellery
House 9.5 per cent and Gitanjali
Gems 4.53 per cent
on BSE.
Tribhovandas Bhimji Zaveri
rose 4.3 per cent, PC
Jeweller 3.53 per cent and
Titan Company 2.77 per
cent.
Accepting the recommendations
of a panel, the
Finance Ministry yesterday
said no excise audit will be
carried out for the first two
years for units whose duty
payment is less than Rs 1
crore (that is turnover of
manufactured goods less
than Rs 100 crore).
Nadal is keen
to play in Rio after
being unable
to defend his gold
medal at London
in 2012 due to a
knee injury but
he hasn’t fulfilled
the qualifying criteria.
In other quarter-finals
this weekend, Italy host Argentina
in Pesaro.
Juan Martin Del Potro,
the 2009 US Open winner, is
back in the Argentina squad
after a four-year absence.
Federico Delbonis, the
world number 40, is the
South Americans’ top
player while Fabio Fognini,
ranked 36, leads Italy’s
challenge.
Only once since returning
to the World Group in
2002 have Argentina failed
to have at least made the
it would turn out like this
where Ram gets to play the
first match. Also, we were
thinking about whether
Lim would play doubles or
not. It will be interesting to
see how the weather holds
out and how the matches
eventually get played. But
as a team, we are ready for
any situation that arises,”
Paes said.
In view
of largescale
protests
by
jewellers
following
Budget
proposal
of 1 per
cent excise duty on non-silver
Jewellery, the government
had set up a sub-committee
to interact with the
industry on issues relating
to compliance, maintenance
of records and other
administrative matters.
The government has also
quarter-finals and that was
in 2014 when Italy beat
them in the first round.
In Trinec, the 2012 and
2013 champions Czech Republic
face nine-time winners
France, whose last title
came in 2001.
The Czechs will miss
their number one, eighthranked
Wimbledon semi-finalist
Tomas Berdych, while
France will be led by 10thranked
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
France can also call upon
Wimbledon doubles champions
Nicolas Mahut and
Pierre-Hugues Herbert.
The weekend’s remaining
quarter-final sees 32-
time champions United
States host Croatia in Portland.
Both sides boast two top-
20 players — John Isner for
the home side and former
US Open champion Marin
Cilic for 2005 champions
Croatia.
Croatia has won all three
of the nations’ previous ties,
with Cilic also starring in
the most recent encounter,
a quarter-final in 2009.
About wet conditions
here, Paes said, “We have
played in wet conditions
before, especially when we
played against Switzerland
in Kolkata. We had rain literally
all through Thursday
night and on Friday morning
when we got out there
the court was really soft and
damp. Being grass, we need
to take care of that court really
well”.
The tie will be played
out at the grass-courts of
Chandigarh Club here and
Paes said the Indians are
ready for the challenge. “As
a team, we are all ready for
the tie and hopefully we
can start on time tomorrow,
but if that doesn’t happen, I
believe we might be able to
play three matches on Saturday
-- two singles and a
doubles -- which means we
might have an earlier start
on Saturday.
He said about two
months ago, Tripura Governor
Tathagata Roy himself
visited the area and
informed the Union Road
Transport and Highways
Minister Nitin Gadkari
about the situation, and
Chief Minister Manik Sarkar
had also spoken to him
but things have not improved.
Government officials
said a few trucks carrying
essential commodities
were entering the state
through an alternative road
which could not meet the
demands of the state. (PTI)
decided independent of the
committee’s recommendations
to increase for Jewellery
manufacturers “the SSI
eligibility limit from Rs 12
crore to Rs 15 crore and the
SSI exemption limit from
Rs 6 crore to Rs 10 crore in
a financial year and Rs 85
lakh for March 2016”.(PTI)

JAGANNATHA RATHA
YATRA, JULY 2016
Puri is one of the four holy dhamas of
India (The others are Dvaraka, Badarinath
and Rameshvaram). It is located 60km
from Bhubaneshwar, on the coast of the
Bay of Bengal.
Puri is called Sri Purushottama Dhama,
the abode of the Lord Vishnu on earth. Other
names are Sri Kshetra, Nilachala-dhama,
Jagannatha-dhama, Yamanika-tirtha,
Martya Vaikuntha, Nilagiri, Shankha-kshetra,
Dasha-avatara-kshetra and Narasimha-kshetra.
Puri is about 2 km wide and 4
km long.
The name Jagannath literally means the
Lord of the Universe. King Indradyumna
first established the temple of Lord Jagannath
here on the Nilachala hill with the Deity
being installed by Lord Brahma himself.
The construction of the present temple
was begun by King Chora Ganga deva and
finished by his descendant Ananga Bhima
Deva during 12th century. The temple complex
comprises an area of 10.7 acres and is
enclosed by 2 rectangular walls. The outer
enclosure is called Meghanada Prachira.
The walls are 20ft high. The inner wall is
called Kurma bheda. The walls were built
during 15th or 16th century.
This temple has the largest kitchen in
the world, and feeds thousands of devotees
daily. The kitchen can prepare food for 1,
00,000 people on a festival day and 25,000
is not unusual on a normal day.
There are 36 traditional communities
who render a specific hereditary service
to the Deities. The temple has as many as
6000 priests. There is a wheel on the top
of the Jagannath temple made of an alloy
of 8 metals. It is called Nila-Chakra (blue
wheel). Everyday, a different flag is tied to
a mast attached to the Nila-Chakra. Every
Ekadashi, a lamp is lit on the top of the temple
near the wheel.
Thirty different smaller temples surround
the main temple. The Lord Narasimha
temple adjacent to western side of the
Mukti-Mandapa, was constructed before
the present temple. In front of the main
gate, there is an 11 m pillar known as Aruna
Sthambha. This pillar was once in front
of the Sun Temple in Konark. It was bought
to puri during 18th Century. The figure on
the pillar is Aruna, the Sun god’s charioteer.
In the passage room of this gate is a
Deity of Lord Jagannath known as Patita
Pavana (Savior of the Fallen). This deity is
visible from the road, so non-Hindus may
take His Darshan.
There are 4 gates:
The Eastern Simhadwara (Lion Gate).
The Southern Ashwadwara (House Gate).
The Western Vyaghradwara (The Tiger
Gate).
The Northern Hastidwara (Elephant Gate).
There is a carving of each form by the
entrance of each gate. The Lion gate, which
is the main gate, is located on the Grand
side of the road.
The main Deities in the temple are Lord
Jagannath, His brother Lord Baladeva, and
his sister Subhadra. Some of the other temples
within the walls of the temple house
Deities of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Lord
Rama Chandra, Sakshi Gopal, Hanuman,
Lord Narasimha, Lord Varaha and others.
Lord Krishna’s father Nanda Maharaja once
inquired from his brother Upananda about
how Govardhana Hill had appeared in the sacred
land of Vrndavana. Upananda replied that
King Pandu, father of the Pandavas, had asked
this very question to Grandfather Bhisma, who
had narrated the following story from the Garga
Samhita:
One day in Goloka Vrndavana Lord Krishna
informed Srimati Radharani that she should
now appear on the earth as it was time for them
to perform their transcendental pastimes within
the material world. Radharani replied that unless
Vraja Dhama, the Yamuna and Govardhana
Hill were present there, she would not be very
happy. Krishna then told Radharani that she
need not worry, as Vraja Dhama, along with the
Yamuna and Govardhana Hill had already appeared
on the earth.
Many years before this incident, in the land
of Salmali dvipa, the wife of the great mountain
Dronacal gave birth to a son named Govardhana.
At the time of Govardhana’s birth all the demigods
appeared in the sky and showered flowers
upon him. The great mountains, led by the Himalayas
and Sumeru, came there to offer their
respects. They then performed parikrama of Govardhana
and accepted him as their king. They
offered very nice prayers praising Govardhana
for having descended from Goloka Vrndavana,
describing him as the “crown jewel of Vraja.”
Some years later, at the beginning of Satya-yuga,
the great sage Pulastya Muni paid a visit to
Salmali dvipa. Upon seeing the beautiful Govardhana
Hill covered with many lovely creepers,
flowers, rivers, caves and chirping birds, the sage
felt that this hill was capable of giving liberation.
He then went to
meet Dronacal,
who immediately
offered his
respects and
inquired from
the sage what
service he could
render.
Pulastya
Muni informed
Dronacal that he
was from Kasi
(Benares) and
was on pilgrimage
to all the
holy places. And
he said that even though the sacred
river Ganges flows through
Kasi, there is no beautiful hill. He
then asked Dronacal to give Govardhana
to him so that he could
perform his austerities sitting on
top of the hill.
On hearing the sage’s request,
Dronacal, who was not willing to
part with his son, started to shed
tears in thought of separation
from his beloved Govardhana.
Not wanting to see Pulastya
Muni become angry and curse
his father, Govardhana asked the sage how he
would carry him all the way to Kasi. The sage replied
that he would carry him in his right hand.
Govardhana then agreed to go with the sage on
one condition — that if the sage put him down
anywhere during the course of the journey, he
would not be able to lift him again. Pulastya
Muni agreed. Carrying Govardhana in his right
hand he left for Kasi.
By the will of providence Pulastya Muni
passed through Vraja on his way to Kasi. On arriving
in Vraja, Govardhana thought that now he
was here he should remain in the holy dhama. By
his mystic power he was able to influence Pulastya
Muni to attend to the call of nature. Unmindful,
the sage put Govardhana down and went off
to answer the call. But when he returned, he was
unable to lift Govardhana again. Trying with all
his might, using both hands, he could not lift Govardhana
even slightly.
In great anger Pulastya Muni cursed Govardhana
to sink into the ground by the measurement
of one mustard seed every day. When Govardhana
first came to Vraja in the beginning of
Satya-yuga, he was eight yojanas long (64 miles);
five yojanas wide (40 miles) and two yojanas
high (16 miles). It is said that after ten thousand
years of the Kali-yuga, Govardhana will have
completely disappeared.
After narrating the wonderful story of Govardhana’s
appearance, Sunanda informed Nanda
Maharaja that as long as Govardhana Hill and
the river Yamuna remained manifest, Kali-yuga
would not take its full effect. Sunanda also said
that anyone who is fortunate enough to hear the
description of the appearance of Govardhana
Hill would be freed from all sins.
SRI MANDIR -
PURI JAGANNATH
Sri Mandir: All of the renowned
acharyas including
Madhvacharya have been
known to visit Sri Mandir. Adi
Shankara established his Govardhana
matha here. There is
also evidence that Guru Nanak,
Kabir, Tulsidas, Ramanujacharya,
and Nimbarkacharya had
visited this place. Sri Chaitanya
Mahaprabhu of Gaudiya
Vaishnavism stayed here for
24 years, establishing that
the love of god can be spread
by chanting the Hare Krishna
mantra. Srimad Vallabhacharya
visited Jagannath Puri
and performed a 7-day recitation
of Srimad Bhagvat. His
sitting place is still famous as
“baithakji.” It confirms his visit
to Puri. A famous incident took
place when Vallabhachrya
visited. There was a discourse
being held between the Brahmins
and 4 questions
were asked.
Who is the highest
of Gods, What
is the highest of
mantras, what is
the highest scripture
and what is
the highest service.
The discourse
went on for many
days with many
schools of thought.
Finally Shri Vallabh
said to ask Lord Jagannath
to confirm
Shri Vallabh’s answers.
A pen and
paper were left in
the inner sanctum.
After some time,
the doors were
opened and 4 answers
were written. 1) The
Son of Devaki (Krishna) is the
God of Gods 2) His name is
the highest of mantras 3) His
song is the highest scripture
(Bhagavat Geeta) 4) Service to
Him is the highest service. The
king was very much pleased
on Vallabhacharya.
KAMAL HAASAN
FRACTURES LEG,
HOSPITALIZED
Tamil superstar Kamal
Haasan has been hospitalised
after he fell in
his office and suffered a
fractured leg.
A close associate of
the actor said that the
61-year-old “Papanasam”
star sustained a
fracture on his right leg
when he slipped and
hurt himself at his office
in Alwarpet on Thursday
morning.
“He has been admitted
to a private hospital
where he is doing well.
He has been advised a
weeks’ rest,” his associate
told the media.
“The actor had no professional
commitments
today,” he added.
KYLIE JENNER MADE
IT ‘TOO BIG’ DURING
LIP SURGERY
Do you know Kylie Jenner
went too far to plump
her pout.
Known for her cosmetically
enhanced lips,
the 18-year-old model,
in an interview with Allure
magazine said her
lips were “too big” when
she started using fillers,
source said.
“I definitely made my
lips a little too big at one
point,” Jenner said.
“I got excited and felt
like I needed to do a lot.
And then you guys were
like, ‘Kylie, you need to
chill,” she continued.
“And then I had to go
back and have it fixed, and
it was a crazy process,”
added the star.
Jenner joked that she
was relieved she didn’t
end up on ‘Botched’ reality
series about bad cosmetic
surgery.
Kylie, who launched a
lucrative line of lipsticks,
liners and glosses under
her Kylie Cometics brand,
admitted to having her
lips plumped last year.
“I have temporary lip
fillers. It’s just an insecurity
of mine and it’s what
I wanted to do,” she said,
on ‘Keeping Up With The
FILM ON SANIA MIRZA WILL BE
VERY INSPIRING: SHAH RUKH
SALMAN FINALLY FILES RESPONSE
FOR HIS RAPE METAPHOR TO MSCW
‘SUITS’ STAR MARKLE KEEN TO
WORK WITH PRIYANKA CHOPRA
Meghan Markle might be
one of the most sought-after
names in Hollywood owing
to her popular TV series
“Suits”, but the actress has
a secret dream to feature
Bollywood superstar Shah
Rukh Khan feels any movie
made on tennis star Sania
Mirza will be inspiring and
he may like to produce it.
“Whenever there is a movie
made on Sania, I think it
will be very inspiring and it
will be fantastic,” Khan told
the media after formally
launching Sania’s autobiography,
titled ‘Ace against Odds’.
“And I don’t know... ask her
if she will let me play her love
interest. But, I will produce it
for sure,” he said in a lighter
vein.
Shah Rukh also expressed
hope that Indian sports films
will soon be able to make a
mark on international platform.
“Somewhere down the
line when sportswomen and
sportsmen films are made we
feel extremely patriotic also
from whichever part of the
world they are made. When
it’s an Indian sportsperson
you will feel for the country,”
he noted.
“We have a country somehow
perhaps apart from a
few sports, we have never
made a mark internationally.
Inshah Allah...that will happen
very soon...as things are
Bollywood actor Salman
Khan has finally filed his response
with regard to his
much-controversial “raped
woman” analogy before the
Maharashtra State Commission
for Women on Thursday.
“Salman Khan has filed
his response to the notice
issued by Maharashtra State
Commission for Women on
Wednesday” said MSCW
chief Vijaya Rahatkar.
Rahatkar further said the
commission is going through
the contents of his reply, adding
the next course of action
will be decided accordingly.
in a Bollywood movie with
her “good friend” Priyanka
Chopra.
Meghan, best known for
her role as Rachel Zane on
the legal-drama, and Priyanka
recently hung out with
each other and shared pictures
of their “poolside biryani
date.”
Meghan, 34, says she
would love to work with the
“Bajirao Mastani” star in a
Bollywood movie, something
which even Priyanka suggested
her to do.
“I would love to work
with her on a film one day! I
told her specifically that my
dream is to work with her
on a Bollywood film because
I think it would be so much
fun - she said I should do it!,”
Meghan told the media.
The actress sent fans in
a frenzy when she, along
with Priyanka, shared selfies
on her social media page.
Meghan says she has become
good friends with Priyanka
since their first meet and
progressing,” Khan said.
He said Sania’s book will
be quite inspirational.
“I think the book like this
will obviously inspire a lot of
us. Nothing can come in the
way and there can be no obstacles
when you have determination.
I genuinely believe
this. I have always followed
her (Sania’s) career and she
has brought so much freshness
and so much beauty to
all the sports lovers like me,”
the 50-year-old actor said.
Appreciating Sania’s grit,
determination and love for
the sport to rise to the top
ranking in doubles game despite
her injury, he said, “She
(Sania) had an injury and she
could not continue with the
singles career but she twisted
“Maharashtra State Commission
for Women is going
through the contents of Salman’s
reply and will soon decide
its next course of action,”
she said.
The 50-year-old actor had
failed to appear before the
Commission twice earlier after
being summoned.
On June 22, the MSCW had
issued a notice asking Salman
to appear before it on June 29
to explain his position on the
‘raped woman’ analogy.
When he failed to appear,
the MSCW had issued summons
to him on June 29 asking
the actor to appear before
it on July 7.
The actor after being summoned
for the first time had
sent a letter to the MSCW
panel through his lawyer in
which he stated that the case
was already being heard by
hails the “Quantico” star as
“unbelievable.”
“Priyanka is unbelievable,
she has become a really good
friend. ELLE Magazine in the
US hosted a dinner celebrating
Women in TV (Priyanka
was on one of their covers)
and we met that night -
turns out that she really likes
‘Suits’.”
Priyanka, 33, is currently
shooting for season two of
her hit TV show “Quantico”
and also has Hollywood movie
“Baywatch” in her kitty.
Meghan says she instantly
connected with Priyanka and
the duo keep in touch while
also trying to meet each
other if they are in the same
town.
“And you know when you
meet someone and you just
‘click’... It was just an easy,
natural progression. We’ve
managed to keep in touch via
email and text and try to see
each other whenever we’re
both in the same town,” she
said.
it around and she became the
No.1 in doubles.
“All this stuff means she
is not giving up the love for
sports...and that connects
me to great sportsperson like
Sania and every time Sania
loses somewhere...she represents
our country...I think
all of us lose a little bit,” Khan
said.
“We all will take away
something fantastic from this
book...we all will have some
learning lesson. Her experiences
are very vital and to
understand how you fight
against things which are going
against you,” he said, adding
that she’s just truly absolutely
inspiring and there
should also be a part-two of
this book.
the National Commission for
Women (NCW), adding the
matter cannot be heard simultaneously
at two places.
However, Salman later
defied the NCW’s summons
and failed to appear before it
on July 8 to clarify his remark.
The ‘Dabangg’ actor
landed in a soup last month
during the promotion of the
recent blockbuster movie
‘Sultan’.
“When I used to walk out
of the ring, after the shoot, I
used to feel like a raped woman.
I couldn’t walk straight,”
he said.
Although Salman was
quick to apologise immediately
after the comment,
his statement irked women
activists and other human
rights groups, who demanded
an apology from the actor.
The actor’s father Salim
Khan and brother Arbaaz
Khan had earlier come out in
his support along with some
other B-Town celebs stating
that the intention behind the
‘rape’ remark was not wrong.
`BRUISED` SONAKSHI FEELS
Bollywood’s Dabangg girl
Sonakshi Sinha, who will be
seen doing hard core action
scenes in the upcoming movie
‘Akira’, recently, got bruised
while shooting an action sequence.
Posting a picture of her
bruised arm on Instagram,
Sonakshi, 29, wrote, “Nope,
I dint tattoo the map of USA
on my arm. That is an actual
bruise from shooting action
for #Akira. From kicking
ass. Black and blue for real.
Bruised and battered but
never given up. (It’s gone now,
dont worry) #nopain,nogain
Sharing the same picture
on Twitter, she shared, “Battlescars
when i was shooting an action
Instead of cribbing about
the injury, brave Sona wore
‘KABALI’ PRODUCER MOVES HC
TO PREVENT ‘DOWNLOADS’
Tamil film producer S Thanu
on Thursday moved the
Madras High Court seeking
to prevent illegal downloads
of superstar Rajnikanth’s upcoming
film ‘Kabali’ through
about 180 websites and
“countless unknown sites”.
The producer of the film,
in his writ petition, sought
a direction to Telecom Regulatory
Authority of India
(TRAI) to issue instructions
to all service providers to
block websites offering illegal
download of the film.
Senior Counsel for the producer
included Tamil Nadu
Anti-Piracy Cell as a respondent
to ensure compliance.
The petitioner enclosed
the screenshot of a site which
claimed that visitors could
access 30 films at the rate of
12,000 downloads.
The counsel said they had
arranged a live demo of another
website to the court, to
show that an entire feature
film could be downloaded for
as little as Rs 10.
From that single copy several
thousand copies could
be made and sold in the black
market, he added.
While the pirates make Rs
20 to 30 a copy, the total loss
is incurred by the producers,
artists and others involved in
the making of a multi-crore
film, he contended.
‘SUICIDE SQUAD’: MARGOT ROBBIE WAS
ACTUALLY SCARED OF JARED LETO
Margot Robbie once
felt method actor Jared
Leto , who portrays the
Joker, might “beat her up”
on ‘Suicide Squad’ set.
According to the
26-year-old actress, who
plays the Joker’s accomplice
and on-off lover
Harley Quinn in David
Ayer’s super-villain movie,
was worried about the
“abusive relationship”
between their characters,
sources said.
“When I first heard
that he was method and
that we couldn’t refer to
him as Jared and things
like that, I started to panic
a bit because I’m in an
abusive relationship with
this guy who
thinks he is
the character,”
Robbie told.
“I was worried
I’d get
beat up on set,”
she added.
Reportedly,
much has been heard
about the 44-year-old actor’s
method acting- from
sending live rats, dead
pigs and used condoms
to his co-stars to insisting
that no-one call him Jared
between takes.
However, ‘The Wolf of
wall Street’ star also stated
that Leto was “really
lovely” and far from being
abusive to her.
According to Robbie,
she was relieved to find
the Oscarwinning actor
“respectful, professional
and incredible to watch”.
“He’s very conscientious
on set. He’s not completely
lost in the character
that he’s violent or
anything. Between every
take he asks if I’m okay,”
she added.
