TURNS FATAL FOR 

LABOURER 

A labourer was killed instantly 

after he fell from the 

top of an electric pole while 

trying to provide electricity 

to the new building of the 

town municipal complex as 

he came in contact with a live 

feeder. 

The deceased has been 

identified as Subramanya 

Dondya (55). Dondya was 

working for an electric contractor 

since seven years. 

Injuries to the head and profound 

bleeding are found to 

be the main reasons for his 

death. Locals alleged that the 

inhuman attitude by the contractor 

has led to his untimely 

death. 

He is survived by wife, 

three sons. The body has 

been shifted to the taluk hospital. 

A case has been registered 

against the contractor

TWO KILLED IN BIKE- 

CAR COLLISION 

Two persons died after 

their bike was hit by a car 

near Bacchanahalli Bridge on 

Thursday. The deceased are 

identified as Manjunath (30) 

and Mohan (22). Both are 

residents of Devavanahalli. 

The accident occurred when 

they were on their way to 

work in Bengaluru. The driver 

of the car is absconding 

and KIAL police have registered 

a case. 

PROFS RECRUITMENT 

TO BE HALTED AT MY- 

SURU VARSITY 

The University of Mysore’s 

move to carry out 

recruitment for more than 

200 teaching posts has been 

stymied by the State government. 

In a letter to the 

university’s Vice-Chancellor 

K.S. Rangappa, the Additional 

Chief Secretary to the Higher 

Education Department, 

Bharat Lal Meena, has directed 

the university to halt the 

process of recruitment until 

further orders. In a notification 

issued on June 24, had 

invited applications to fill up 

the backlog as well as current 

vacancies for teaching posts 

in the postgraduate departments, 

postgraduate centres 

and constituent colleges of 

the university.

A car rammed into a lorry 

that was parked on the side 

of the road. Three people 

have been critically injured 

in the accident. One of the 

woman commuters in the car 

died on the spot due to the

a local hospital.

HC tells BBMP to take 

action against unauthorized 

construction of 

temple 

The high court on 

Wednesday directed BBMP 

to take action against the unauthorized 

construction of 

a temple in the government 

primary school premises at 

Herohalli village, Bengaluru 

Urban district. A division 

bench headed by Chief Justice 

Subhro Kamal Mukherjee 

passed the order while 

disposing off a PIL filed by 

Hanumantharayappa and 

others. In the statement filed 

by K D Deshpande, head of 

legal cell, BBMP, the civic 

body admitted the Basaveshwara 

Temple committee had 

started building the temple. 

But the construction was 

stopped after a notice was 

issued to the committee on 

June 16.

GIRLS PREFERRED OVER BOYS FOR ADOPTION 

Bengaluru: There is a 

steep increase in adoption 

of children. People 

wait for even more than 

two years to adopt children. 

The number of children 

available for adoption 

is less than 1/4th of 

the demand. For the last 

two years, that is during 

2014-15 and 2015-16 

(April to March) 378 babies 

were adopted across 

the State in which there 

were 238 female and 140 

males. There are nearly 

1284 couples who are 

eagerly waiting to adopt 

children. 

Every year a few orphaned, 

abandoned or 

surrendered children end 

up in orphanages that facilitate 

adoption. They 

can be adopted by following 

the procedures put in 

place by the government 

of India. In 2014-15 and 

2015-16, 204 and 174 

children were adopted 

in the State respectively. 

Not only those who do 

not have kids adopt the 

children, but even those 

who are having their own 

kids adopt them. Over 

the years, the demand for 

adoption has increased. 

Young couples in the age 

group of 30 to 32 years 

are getting registered 

their names for adoption. 

More female children 

are being adopted than 

male and more than 80 

percent of the adopted 

children are in the 0 to 2 

years age group. 

The eligibility criteria 

for a couple to adopt children 

are: 

• They should be 

physically, mentally and 

emotional stable and financially 

capable. 

• No child can be 

adopted by a couple unless 

they have at least two 

years of stable marital relationship. 

• Couples in livein 

relationship are not 

eligible to adopt a child. 

• To adopt a child 

in the age group of 0-3 

years, the maximum 

composite age of the parents 

should be 90 years, 

while the individual age 

of the either of the parent 

should not be less than 

25 years and more than 

50 years. 

• To adopt children 

who are three years 

old, the maximum composite 

age of the parents 

is 105 years. 

• In case single 

parent desires to adopt, 

he or she should not be 

of less than 30 years and 

above 50 years. 

• An unmarried or 

single male person is not 

permitted to adopt a girl 

child. 

Apart from the above, 

the parents should have 

adequate resources to 

provide good upbringing 

for the child. The parents 

should have good health 

and should not be suffering 

from any contagious 

or terminal diseases or 

any such mental or physical 

condition which may 

prevent them from taking 

care of the child. Any orphan, 

abandoned or surrendered 

child can be adopted 

following the due 

procedure laid down in 

the adoption guidelines, 

if such child is declared 

free for adoption by the 

child welfare committee. 

Children undergo all 

health checkups before 

the adoption process. 

There are two adoption 

centres in Mysuru 

region. Both are in Mandya 

district. One of them 

is Vikasana Jogula Dattu 

Seva Kendra on Bannur 

Road and the other is 

Janapada Seva Trust in 

Melkote, Mandya district.

of DySP M K Ganapati, 

stating that people of 

Karnataka were unhappy 

with his administration. 

“When a person is 

about to die, he does 

not cook up stories. The 

world has seen the video 

in which M K Ganapati 

named minister K J 

George, officers Pranab 

Mohanty and A M Prasad 

as being responsible for 

his death. Chief Minister, 

when three names 

are in the dying declaration, 

why are you not 

registering FIR against 

them? Why are you trying 

to protect them?” he 

questioned. “Is a person 

more important to you 

than your party? Protests 

are happening in every 

district and people are 

fed up with you. It is also 

shameful that you are 

also using the electronic 

media to taint the image 

of Ganapati’s wife Pavana. 

You did not register her 

statement in the inquest 

report, instead you took 

his brother’s and father’s 

statements. It is your duty 

to register the spouse’s 

statement when she is 

alive. As a lawyer, you are 

well aware of it. You are 

protecting K J George in a 

very shameless manner”. 

“As the people have 

cast their votes against 

you in the SMS campaign, 

you must step down from 

the CM’s chair. If you have 

any sort of belief in the 

party and its principles, 

you must step down and 

resign,” he demanded. 

“There are many leaders 

in the party who can 

become the Chief Minister.

to be the CM,” he added. 

Urging the Congress

Poojary said, “If Siddaramaiah 

does not resign, I 

urge the party high command 

to sack him and 

make someone else the 

chief minister. The high 

command must think 

about the party’s survival. 

The country needs 

Congress; this is the party 

that brought Independence 

to the nation.” 

To a question on the 

judicial probe ordered 

by the Karnataka government 

into Ganapati’s 

suicide, he said, “I did 

not expect you (Siddaramaiah) 

to stoop so low 

as to appoint a retired 

judge, stating there is a 

shortage of judges in the 

Supreme Court. Have you 

requested the Apex Court 

for judges? If you had the 

guts you could have handed 

over the probe to the 

sitting judge of the high 

court or of the Supreme 

Court. This would have 

been a proper judicial inquiry 

and I would have 

appreciated it. 

“You cannot fool the 

people of the state. Times 

have changed. You have 

implemented many people-friendly 

programmes, 

but the black spot of this 

case has covered all the 

good you have done. If you 

continue to do the same, 

the people will reject you 

in the next elections,” he 

told Siddaramaiah. 

NGT IMPOSED FINE OF 25 LAKH ON 

ASIAN FISHMEAL 

Mangaluru: Southern 

bench of National 

Green Tribunal at 

Chennai has imposed 

fine of Rs 25 lac on a 

Fishmeal company at 

Ullal and ordered closure 

of Asian Fishmeal. 

The order was passed 

in pursuance with an 

application filed by 

Muhammed Kabir from 

Ullal here against Indian 

Fishmeal and 14 

other industries functioning 

at Ullal. 

Industries involved 

with manufacture of 

fish products were 

causing water pollution, 

air pollution, 

stench, and violation 

of Coastal Regulaltory 

Zone rules. Mr. 

Kabir had prayed for 

stopping environmental 

damage caused by 

these industries. 

The Chennai bench

service 

The Bangalore Metropolitan 

Transport Corporation 

(BMTC) will resume its feeder 

services along Reach 1 of 

Namma Metro, in and around 

Indiranagar, to provide lastmile 

connectivity to Metro 

commuters. 

Earlier feeder service was 

started to Whitefield from 

Swami Vivekananda station. 

Man drowns trying to 

save Teenager 

A man who tried to rescue a 

16-year-old boy from drowning, 

himself drowned in Kalena Agrahara 

lake along Bannerghatta 

Road. Hulimavu police said on 

Wednesday morning, Hrudayaraj 

bought a second hand 

tractor. In the evening, he took 

it to the lake to wash it. There, 

his son John Prakash, 16, tried 

to reverse the vehicle. However, 

he lost control of the vehicle and 

both sank into the water. Seeing 

this, passersby informed the Fire 

and Emergency services. However, 

before they could reach the 

scene, Anandappa jumped into 

the water to try and rescue John. 

But, 10 minutes after he dived 

into the water, Anandappa did 

not come out. In the meantime, 

the fire rescue team arrived at 

the spot and found Anandappa. 

He was rushed to a nearby hospital 

but was declared brought 

dead. Although a search operation 

for John Prakash continued 

till dark, the team was unable to 

locate his body. The search will 

resume on Thursday morning.

Case against MU Vice 

Chancellor 

Police have registered a case 

of abuse against Mysore University 

Vice Chancellor for abusing 

a retired principal of one of the 

institutions affiliated to Manasagangothri. 

In his complaint, S Siddegowda 

, a retired principal of 

Manasagangothri educational 

institution has alleged that he 

was abused by the VC in front of 

many people on July 8th evening. 

The complainant said that he 

had gone to the VC’s office seeking 

a job for his close friend’s son 

on temporary basis. He alleged 

that the VC made him wait for 

more than 2 hours and when 

he came out of his office, the VC 

abused him in front of many people 

saying that the candidate recommended 

would destroy the 

entire university. 

Disturbed by the development, 

Siddegowda lodged a 

complaint at the Laxmiuram police 

station. The police have given 

an NCR copy to the complainant 

and assured him. 

Driver killed by a 

speeding Cab 

A car driver conversing over 

mobile phone on the national 

highway met his tragic end after 

being hit by a speeding car near 

Poinachi petrol bunk on Thursday, 

July 14. Madhusudan (32) 

of Kundakuhi Marunthadka is 

the deceased. He was returning 

to Kasaragod from temple town 

of Kollur with fellow passengers. 

He parked his car near the petrol 

bunk in Poinachi and took a 

stroll to have a conversation on 

his mobile phone. At the same 

time a speeding car hit him and 

he was dragged to couple of meters. 

Though he was rushed to a 

nearby hospital immediately, he 

did not survive and eventually 

died due to grievous injuries. 

Govt to extend deadlines 

for bars and pubs 

to 1am 

The government is set to extend 

the deadline for bars and 

pubs till from 11.30 p.m. to 1 a.m. 

on all days of the week. While 

tipplers are cheering, residents 

of Indiranagar and Koramangala 

are opposing the move. Both residential 

neighbourhoods have 

a high concentration of restaurants 

and pubs. 

Members of RWAs say that 

many of the outlets operating in 

their neighbourhoods are illegal, 

lack trade licenses and have 

come up in violation of the BDA 

zoning regulations. Earlier in July, 

14 RWAs across Bengaluru got 

together to oppose commercialisation 

of their localities.

five suspects in the suicide

will be booked under the 

Goonda Act. 

Speaking at the Assembly, 

the CM said that the 

government had sufficient 

evidence to book Khandya 

under the Goonda Act (the 

Karnataka Prevention of 

Dangerous Activities of 

Bootleggers, Drug-Offenders, 

Gamblers, Goondas, 

Immoral Traffic Offenders, 

Slum-Grabbers and Video 

or Audio Pirates Act). 

Khandya has as many as 32 

cases pending against him. 

Siddaramaiah further 

said that the CID is investigating 

the case and will 

take action against everyone 

involved in the case. 

The Chief Minister pointed 

out that it was not right to 

compare Kallappa’s death 

with MK Ganapathy’s demise. 

Appropriate action 

would be taken once the 

CID submits the report, he 

added. 

Praveen Khandya’s anticipatory 

bail plea hearing 

was put off by the District 

Sessions Court at Chikkamagaluru 

in the abduction 

case of H M Tejas involving 

DySP Kallappa Handibag to 

July 16. Khandya is still absconding. 

Meanwhile, Siddaramaiah 

has also assured that

TO 1.62 PER CENT 

Ballooning prices of food 

articles pushed up India’s 

annual wholesale price index 

sharply to 1.62 per cent 

for June from 0.79 per cent 

for the month before. This 

kept the inflation level in the 

positive domain for the third 

month after 17 months in the 

negative. 

The annual inflation for 

potatoes, as per data on official 

wholesale price index 

(WPI) released by the Commerce 

and Industry Ministry, 

was as much as 64.48 per 

cent, while for pulses it was 

26.61 per cent. Vegetable 

prices were 16.91 per cent 

higher. Significantly, the final 

wholesale price index for the 

month of April was also revised 

to suggest a higher annual 

inflation rate of 0.79 per 

cent against 0.34 per cent as 

reported earlier.

was slitting the animal’s

provision for it in the NCT

It may be recalled that in 

April, the apex court had directed 

Mallya to disclose all 

of his assets held by him and 

his family. The consortium 

of banks had also rejected 

his offer to repay Rs 4,000 

crores as settlement of all 

debts. The one-time owner 

of Kingfisher Airlines owes 

17 banks, including the State 

Bank of India, over Rs 9,000 

crore, including interest. 

One time Member of 

Parliament, Mallya is under 

investigation by various 

agencies, including the Enforcement 

Directorate (ED) 

and the Serious Fraud Investigation 

Office (SFIO), which 

probes white collar crimes. 

Last month, a special 

Prevention of Money Laundering 

Act (PMLA) court in 

Mumbai had declared Mallya 

a proclaimed offender in a

on Thursday said the 

Supreme Court verdict to 

restore Nabam Tuki-led 

Government in Arunachal 

Pradesh was a lesson for 

the Governors to abide 

by the Constitution and 

not behave like BJP or RSS 

workers. 

“The Modi Government 

is a dictatorial government. 

Modi Government does not 

believe in democracy. What 

happened in Arunachal and 

Uttarakhand was killing 

the very idea of democracy. 

Now, the Supreme Court 

has given relief. This clearly 

shows that the Modi Government 

is anti-democratic 

and the SC has forced 

this government to leave 

its dictatorial fashion of 

working,” Congress leader 

Shobha Oza told the media. 

“It has reminded them 

the Constitutional position 

of Governors, and that they 

should behave as expected, 

and not as a BJP or RSS 

member,” she added. 

Nabam Tuki on Wednesday 

evening took charge as 

Chief Minister of the state 

at Arunachal Bhavan here 

in Delhi. 

Hours after the Supreme 

Court ordered the restoration 

of his government, a 

jubilant Tuki met Congress 

president Sonia Gandhi 

at her official 10, Janpath 

residence on Wednesday 

evening. 

The Congress president 

during the meeting, which 

was also attended by party 

vice-president Rahul 

Gandhi, asked Tuki to take 

everybody on board and 

strengthen the grand old 

party in the northeastern 

state. 

In a major setback to the 

BJP-ruled Centre, the apex 

court earlier on Thursday 

quashed “message 

and direction” issued by 

Arunachal Pradesh Governor 

Jyoti Prasad Rajkhowa 

and restored status quo as 

on December 15 when Congress’ 

Nabam Tuki was the 

chief minister. The Bharatiya 

Janata Party (BJP), 

on the other hand, downplayed 

the Congress’ accusations 

of toppling elected 

governments and said the 

Arunachal Pradesh verdict 

is not a setback for the Centre. 

A five-judge constitution 

bench pronounced the verdict 

on a bunch of petitions 

dealing with discretionary 

powers of the governor to 

summon or advance the assembly 

session. 

Stating the governor’s 

direction on conducting 

assembly proceedings is 

unconstitutional, the apex 

court set aside all steps and 

decision taken by the legislative 

assembly pursuant to 

the governor’s December 

9th last year order and said 

they are unsustainable. 

Arunachal Pradesh had 

been under President’s 

Rule since January 26. 

Tuki-led Congress government 

was dismissed following 

days of turmoil after 

21 of its 47 lawmakers 

rebelled against the chief 

minister. 

The Congress, which 

had 47 MLAs seats in the 

60-member assembly, suffered 

a jolt when 21 of its 

lawmakers rebelled. Eleven 

BJP MLAs backed the rebels 

in the bid to upstage the 

government. Later, 14 rebel 

Congress MLAs were disqualified.

GYM INSTRUCTOR ARRESTED FOR STABBING 

LIVE-IN PARTNER 

A gym instructor allegedly 

stabbed his live-in 

partner 32 times in a house 

in sector 73, leaving her in 

a critical condition, police 

said on Thursday. 

The accused Varun Goyal 

(28), who runs a gym in 

Ghaziabad, has been arrested. 

Varun had heated arguments 

with the woman, a 

divorcee, as she was apparently 

pressurising him for 

marriage. 

SHO Dinesh Yadav said 

Varun stabbed her 32 

times with a kitchen knife. 

The neighbours heard her 

screams of help and informed 

police. The police 

team found the woman in 

a pool of blood and rushed 

her to a Noida hospital 

from where she was rushed 

to LNJP in New Delhi in a 

critical condition. 

The victim is five years 

younger to Varun and had 

rented the house a year 

ago. Varun had moved in 

the house as a live in partner, 

police said. 

The woman’s home town 

is in Gorakhpur and she 

works in private company 

at sector 63. She was earlier 

living with her brother in 

Indirapuram. She befriended 

Varun in the gym and 

thereafter shifted to the 

Noida sector 73 house. 

An attempt to murder 

case has been filed against 

Varun on the basis of a 

complaint of the woman’s

A Chinese businessman

hacking sensitive military 

information has been sentenced

in prison in the US. Su Bin

military to steal data from

2008 and 2014. He 

was arrested in Canada 

in 2014 and extradited to 

the US. The Chinese government 

has repeatedly 

denied any involvement in 

hacking foreign companies 

or governments. “Su Bin’s 

sentence is a just punishment 

for his admitted role 

in a conspiracy with hackers 

from the People’s Liberation 

Army Air Force to 

illegally access and steal

INDIAN-US COUPLE TO PAY USD

An Indian-American 

couple, who owned a mobile 

diagnostic testing company 

in New Jersey, has 

been ordered by a US court 

to pay USD 7.75 million for 

committing a multi-million 

health care fraud. 

Kirtish N Patel and Nita 

K Patel, both aged 53, had 

earlier pleaded guilty to 

healthcare fraud. 

The government’s civil 

complaint had alleged that 

they created fraudulent 

diagnostic test reports, 

forged physician signatures 

on these reports and 

then billed Medicare for the 

fraudulent reports. 

They also billed Medicare 

for neurological tests 

that they conducted without 

the required physician 

supervision, the Justice Department 

said. 

The lawsuit was filed 

under whistleblower, provisions 

of the False Claims 

Act, which allows private 

citizens with knowledge of 

fraud to bring civil actions 

on behalf of the government 

and to share in any 

recovery. 

The False Claims Act also 

permits the government to 

intervene in such lawsuits, 

as it has done in this case. 

The whistleblower who 

brought the misconduct to 

the government’s attention 

will receive 15 to 25 per 

cent of the more than USD 

7.7 million recovered by 

the government.

fraudulently interpreting 

and writing diagnostic 

reports produced by Biosound 

despite having no 

medical license and knowing 

that the reports would 

be used by the referring 

physicians to make important 

patient treatment decisions. 

Nita assisted her husband 

in forging physician 

signatures on the fraudulently 

produced reports to 

make them appear legitimate. 

The couple admitted 

falsely representing to 

Medicare that the neurological 

testing performed 

by Biosound was being supervised 

by a licensed neurologist, 

the Justice Department 

said. 

According to reports, 

more than half of the diagnostic 

reports generated by 

Biosound between October 

2008 and June 2014 were 

never actually reviewed or 

interpreted by a physician. 

Nita and Kirtish were 

paid more than USD 

4,386,133.75 by Medicare 

and private insurance companies 

for the fraudulent 

reports, which they used 

for personal expenses, including 

multiple residences 

and luxury vehicles, it said

NADA CONFIRMS NO DOPING VIOLATION 

FROM INDIAN ATHLETES IN RIO OLYMPICS 

National Anti-Doping 

Agency (Nada) Director 

General Navin Agarwal on 

Wednesday said that all 

the Rio Olympics bound 

sportspersons have undergone 

testing for banned 

substances and they are 

dope-free. 

Agarwal, however, conceded 

that there were issues 

regarding testing of a 

few Rio-bound sportspersons 

as they were not available 

at their “whereabouts” 

provided by them as mandated 

under the Anti-Doping 

Administration Management 

System (ADAMS) 

of the World Anti-Doping 

Agency but Nada was able 

to get their testing done later 

on. 

“All Rio-bound athletes 

have been tested. Some of 

the athletes have been tested 

at least once, some have 

been tested twice and some 

thrice. Some athletes could 

not be tested on the second 

occasion because they were 

training abroad and in their 

case they have been tested 

at least once,” Agarwal, who 

joined last month, told the 

media. 

“For those training 

abroad, we have hired some 

agencies to collect samples 

there (abroad) and we have 

tested the samples of all 

these athletes,” he said. 

“I am quite confident 

that the Indian contingent 

at the Rio Olympics will 

have no doping violation 

by any of them this time. 

We also hope there will be 

no doping violation from 

other countries. Since we 

are very strict as far as our 

athletes are concerned, we 

also expect same strictness 

from other countries so that 

there is fair play,” said the 

1986 batch senior IPS officer 

of Jammu and Kashmir

cancelled a press conference

in one of those days in her 

hometown. I don’t want 

to say further on this but a 

dope test was conducted 

on her. A dope test does not 

take much time and there

named as the third most 

doped country in the world 

in a report published by 

Wada for cases related to 

2014 and Agarwal said it

and some of our procedures 

have been copied 

from WADA. As a national 

agency, there is still a lot 

to do. We also want to get 

rid of this tag of third most 

doped country in the world. 

We are not happy with this 

situation. As a national policy, 

we are committed to 

dope-free sports,” he said. 

“First, we have to spread 

awareness that athletes 

should not use doping as 

shortcut to success. It is 

harmful to their health as 

well to their career. We 

want to educate the athletes 

regarding this on a massive 

scale and bring awareness 

so that we can prevent doping,” 

he said. 

“Secondly, we want to 

establish regional offices of 

the Nada so that it covers 

the length and breadth of 

the country to have meaningful 

impact of anti-doping 

programs. 

PREZ ASKS DARJEELING TEA INDUSTRY

Mukherjee on Thursday 

asked the exporters of 

Darjeeling tea to maintain 

quality and its brand name 

while complying with global 

norms. 

Addressing the annual 

general meeting of Darjeeling 

Tea Association, he 

said tea production is an 

important element of the 

country’s planned economic 

development. 

“Currently India is the 

second largest producer of 

tea next to China. There are 

many other countries like 

Kenya and Sri Lanka which 

produce tea. 

“Among all teas, Darjeeling 

tea requires a special 

mention as it occupies a 

very unique place particularly 

for the connoisseurs,” 

Mukherjee said as he asked 

the producers to uphold 

the quality and brand name 

of Darjeeling tea. 

The total tea production 

in India is nine lakh tons 

annually in comparison 

with China that produces a 

million tons of tea. 

The President said, Darjeeling 

Tea has the Geographical 

Indication (GI) 

tag, which is to protect the 

rights of special products in 

specified countries, and it 

was essential that producers 

comply with the formalities 

as it would be advantageous 

for them. 

The tea estates in Darjeeling 

have reportedly 

been ailing for long and 

incurring losses due to various 

accounts. The Darjeeling 

tea industry provides 

employment to one lakh 

workers, including 40,000 

seasonal workers. 

He complemented the 

Darjeeling Tea Association 

for having upheld the 

unique brand name of ‘Darjeeling 

Tea’ which is a welcome 

item on the breakfast 

tables of many people.

like Startup Village. 

“The state will fund 1,000 

startups every year with Rs two

that constitutes the second phase

15, it supported more than 500 

startups and helped create 3,000

and how will it be possible. 

This needs to be changed. 

“Nutrition supplement 

per se is not harmful if it 

contains proteins, minerals 

and vitamins. Certainly, an 

athlete needs nutritional 

supplement. But it should 

not contain the doping substances 

and willy-nilly an 

athlete may take it thinking 

that it may strengthen 

his muscles but actually he 

is getting these dope substances 

artificially. 

“If he gets tested he will 

test positive but he will say 

he has never used banned 

substances and that the test 

may be wrong. He is not 

even aware that these products 

may contain banned 

substances. The culprit is 

the contaminated supplement 

which has not been 

declared in the label which 

substance it contains.”

Preparation 

1) Cook the pasta shells in water according 

to the directions. Drain the pasta 

and keep aside. 

2) Heat oil in a pan; add asafetida powder, 

all the dried herbs and sauté for 30 

seconds. Add zucchini, bell pepper, 

carrot, broccoli and stir fry until they 

are tender-crisp. Add the black pepper 

and salt. Turn off the heat source and fold 

in the tomatoes and cooked pasta. 

3) Combine the cream cheese and sour 

cream until smooth; add to the pasta and 

mix well.

12 oz fresh cranberries 1 ½ cup flour 

¾ cup old-fashioned oats ¾ cup brown sugar 

1/8 tsp nutmeg 

½ tsp baking powder ¼ tsp salt 

½ cupbuttr, softened 1/3 cup orange juice 

1 tsp orange zest 

14 oz condensed milk 

3 tsp egg replacer, mixed with 4 tbsp warm 

water ½ tsp vanilla extract 

¼ cup sliced almonds 

Preparation 

Line a 13” x 9” baking pan with foil, with 

overhang on the sides. Butter the foil. Preheat 

oven to 350F. 

Combine flour, oats, sugar, nutmeg, baking 

powered and salt in a bowl. With fingers, 

work in butter until evenly distributed. 

Reserve about 1 cup of mixture for topping. 

Press mixture evenly into the bottom of the 

pan. Bake for 12 minutes. 

Meanwhile, combine 1/3 cup orange juice, 

condensed milk, egg replacer mixture, vanilla, 

and orange zest well in a bowl. 

Sprinkle cranberries evenly over hot crust. 

Pour orange mixture over berries. Spread 

gently to evenly distribute cranberries over 

crust. Bake for 7 minutes. 

Remove the pan from oven. Sprinkle evenly 

with reserved topping. Sprinkle almonds 

evenly over top. Bake for 30 minutes. 

Cool on wire rack for an hour. Gently lift out 

of pan and cool completely on wire rack. Cut 

into 24 bars.

a saucepan and stirring 

constantly, bring it to a boil 

over moderate heat. Then, 

reduce the heat to low and 

continue to cook for 

15-20 minutes or till the 

soup becomes thick. Turn 

off the heat source. 4. Heat 

oil in a small pan; add 

mustard seeds, when they 

crackle, add curry leaves 

sauté till the leaves darken. 

Add it to the soup.

JAGANNATHA RATHA 

YATRA, JULY 2016 

Puri is one of the four holy dhamas of 

India (The others are Dvaraka, Badarinath 

and Rameshvaram). It is located 60km 

from Bhubaneshwar, on the coast of the 

Bay of Bengal. 

Puri is called Sri Purushottama Dhama, 

the abode of the Lord Vishnu on earth. Other 

names are Sri Kshetra, Nilachala-dhama, 

Jagannatha-dhama, Yamanika-tirtha, 

Martya Vaikuntha, Nilagiri, Shankha-kshetra, 

Dasha-avatara-kshetra and Narasimha-kshetra. 

Puri is about 2 km wide and 4 

km long. 

The name Jagannath literally means the 

Lord of the Universe. King Indradyumna 

first established the temple of Lord Jagannath 

here on the Nilachala hill with the Deity 

being installed by Lord Brahma himself. 

The construction of the present temple 

was begun by King Chora Ganga deva and 

finished by his descendant Ananga Bhima 

Deva during 12th century. The temple complex 

comprises an area of 10.7 acres and is 

enclosed by 2 rectangular walls. The outer 

enclosure is called Meghanada Prachira. 

The walls are 20ft high. The inner wall is 

called Kurma bheda. The walls were built 

during 15th or 16th century. 

This temple has the largest kitchen in 

the world, and feeds thousands of devotees 

daily. The kitchen can prepare food for 1, 

00,000 people on a festival day and 25,000 

is not unusual on a normal day. 

There are 36 traditional communities 

who render a specific hereditary service 

to the Deities. The temple has as many as 

6000 priests. There is a wheel on the top 

of the Jagannath temple made of an alloy 

of 8 metals. It is called Nila-Chakra (blue 

wheel). Everyday, a different flag is tied to 

a mast attached to the Nila-Chakra. Every 

Ekadashi, a lamp is lit on the top of the temple 

near the wheel. 

Thirty different smaller temples surround 

the main temple. The Lord Narasimha 

temple adjacent to western side of the 

Mukti-Mandapa, was constructed before 

the present temple. In front of the main 

gate, there is an 11 m pillar known as Aruna 

Sthambha. This pillar was once in front 

of the Sun Temple in Konark. It was bought 

to puri during 18th Century. The figure on 

the pillar is Aruna, the Sun god’s charioteer. 

In the passage room of this gate is a 

Deity of Lord Jagannath known as Patita 

Pavana (Savior of the Fallen). This deity is 

visible from the road, so non-Hindus may 

take His Darshan. 

There are 4 gates: 

The Eastern Simhadwara (Lion Gate). 

The Southern Ashwadwara (House Gate). 

The Western Vyaghradwara (The Tiger 

Gate). 

The Northern Hastidwara (Elephant Gate). 

There is a carving of each form by the 

entrance of each gate. The Lion gate, which 

is the main gate, is located on the Grand 

side of the road. 

The main Deities in the temple are Lord 

Jagannath, His brother Lord Baladeva, and 

his sister Subhadra. Some of the other temples 

within the walls of the temple house 

Deities of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Lord 

Rama Chandra, Sakshi Gopal, Hanuman, 

Lord Narasimha, Lord Varaha and others. 

Lord Krishna’s father Nanda Maharaja once 

inquired from his brother Upananda about 

how Govardhana Hill had appeared in the sacred 

land of Vrndavana. Upananda replied that 

King Pandu, father of the Pandavas, had asked 

this very question to Grandfather Bhisma, who 

had narrated the following story from the Garga 

Samhita: 

One day in Goloka Vrndavana Lord Krishna 

informed Srimati Radharani that she should 

now appear on the earth as it was time for them 

to perform their transcendental pastimes within 

the material world. Radharani replied that unless 

Vraja Dhama, the Yamuna and Govardhana 

Hill were present there, she would not be very 

happy. Krishna then told Radharani that she 

need not worry, as Vraja Dhama, along with the 

Yamuna and Govardhana Hill had already appeared 

on the earth. 

Many years before this incident, in the land 

of Salmali dvipa, the wife of the great mountain 

Dronacal gave birth to a son named Govardhana. 

At the time of Govardhana’s birth all the demigods 

appeared in the sky and showered flowers 

upon him. The great mountains, led by the Himalayas 

and Sumeru, came there to offer their 

respects. They then performed parikrama of Govardhana 

and accepted him as their king. They 

offered very nice prayers praising Govardhana 

for having descended from Goloka Vrndavana, 

describing him as the “crown jewel of Vraja.” 

Some years later, at the beginning of Satya-yuga, 

the great sage Pulastya Muni paid a visit to 

Salmali dvipa. Upon seeing the beautiful Govardhana 

Hill covered with many lovely creepers, 

flowers, rivers, caves and chirping birds, the sage 

felt that this hill was capable of giving liberation. 

He then went to 

meet Dronacal, 

who immediately 

offered his 

respects and 

inquired from 

the sage what 

service he could 

render. 

Pulastya 

Muni informed 

Dronacal that he 

was from Kasi 

(Benares) and 

was on pilgrimage 

to all the 

holy places. And 

he said that even though the sacred 

river Ganges flows through 

Kasi, there is no beautiful hill. He 

then asked Dronacal to give Govardhana 

to him so that he could 

perform his austerities sitting on 

top of the hill. 

On hearing the sage’s request, 

Dronacal, who was not willing to 

part with his son, started to shed 

tears in thought of separation 

from his beloved Govardhana. 

Not wanting to see Pulastya 

Muni become angry and curse 

his father, Govardhana asked the sage how he 

would carry him all the way to Kasi. The sage replied 

that he would carry him in his right hand. 

Govardhana then agreed to go with the sage on 

one condition — that if the sage put him down 

anywhere during the course of the journey, he 

would not be able to lift him again. Pulastya 

Muni agreed. Carrying Govardhana in his right 

hand he left for Kasi. 

By the will of providence Pulastya Muni 

passed through Vraja on his way to Kasi. On arriving 

in Vraja, Govardhana thought that now he 

was here he should remain in the holy dhama. By 

his mystic power he was able to influence Pulastya 

Muni to attend to the call of nature. Unmindful, 

the sage put Govardhana down and went off 

to answer the call. But when he returned, he was 

unable to lift Govardhana again. Trying with all 

his might, using both hands, he could not lift Govardhana 

even slightly. 

In great anger Pulastya Muni cursed Govardhana 

to sink into the ground by the measurement 

of one mustard seed every day. When Govardhana 

first came to Vraja in the beginning of 

Satya-yuga, he was eight yojanas long (64 miles); 

five yojanas wide (40 miles) and two yojanas 

high (16 miles). It is said that after ten thousand 

years of the Kali-yuga, Govardhana will have 

completely disappeared. 

After narrating the wonderful story of Govardhana’s 

appearance, Sunanda informed Nanda 

Maharaja that as long as Govardhana Hill and 

the river Yamuna remained manifest, Kali-yuga 

would not take its full effect. Sunanda also said 

that anyone who is fortunate enough to hear the 

description of the appearance of Govardhana 

Hill would be freed from all sins.

PURI JAGANNATH 

Sri Mandir: All of the renowned 

acharyas including 

Madhvacharya have been 

known to visit Sri Mandir. Adi 

Shankara established his Govardhana 

matha here. There is 

also evidence that Guru Nanak, 

Kabir, Tulsidas, Ramanujacharya, 

and Nimbarkacharya had 

visited this place. Sri Chaitanya 

Mahaprabhu of Gaudiya 

Vaishnavism stayed here for 

24 years, establishing that 

the love of god can be spread 

by chanting the Hare Krishna 

mantra. Srimad Vallabhacharya 

visited Jagannath Puri 

and performed a 7-day recitation 

of Srimad Bhagvat. His 

sitting place is still famous as 

“baithakji.” It confirms his visit 

to Puri. A famous incident took 

place when Vallabhachrya 

visited. There was a discourse 

being held between the Brahmins 

and 4 questions 

were asked.

days with many

‘KABALI’ PRODUCER MOVES HC 

TO PREVENT ‘DOWNLOADS’ 

Tamil film producer S Thanu 

on Thursday moved the 

Madras High Court seeking 

to prevent illegal downloads 

of superstar Rajnikanth’s upcoming 

film ‘Kabali’ through 

about 180 websites and 

“countless unknown sites”. 

The producer of the film, 

in his writ petition, sought 

a direction to Telecom Regulatory 

Authority of India 

(TRAI) to issue instructions 

to all service providers to 

block websites offering illegal 

download of the film. 

Senior Counsel for the producer 

included Tamil Nadu 

Anti-Piracy Cell as a respondent 

to ensure compliance. 

The petitioner enclosed 

the screenshot of a site which 

claimed that visitors could 

access 30 films at the rate of 

12,000 downloads. 

The counsel said they had 

arranged a live demo of another 

website to the court, to 

show that an entire feature 

film could be downloaded for 

as little as Rs 10. 

From that single copy several 

thousand copies could 

be made and sold in the black 

market, he added. 

While the pirates make Rs 

20 to 30 a copy, the total loss 

is incurred by the producers, 

artists and others involved in 

the making of a multi-crore 

film, he contended.
