Gang stabs man to
death in Bengaluru
A 25-year-old man was
stabbed by an armed gang
in Devamachohalli village on
Wednesday evening. The victim,
Naveen Kumar, was playing
volleyball at a playground
in the area when, around 5.30
p.m., a gang of 10-12 people on
bikes arrived, stabbed him and
fled. “According to eyewitnesses,
there was no altercation.
The gang members arrived on
the spot stabbed the victim
and rode away on their bikes.
The killing is suspected to be
motivated by a personal rivalry,”
a source in the police has
said. The Taverekere police
have registered a case and are
investigating.
150 million Indians
have mental health
issues: Survey
A nation-wide study by the
National Institute of Mental
Health and Neurosciences
(NIMHANS), Bengaluru found
that nearly 150 million Indians
are in need of active intervention
to treat mental health
disorders. The findings were
released on Monday on the occasion
of World Mental Health
Day, under the guidance of
the Union Ministry of Family
Health and Welfare. They show
that a shocking 70 per cent of
the population in need of mental
healthcare is not getting any
kind of help. The study — National
Mental Health Survey
— found that 13.7 per cent of
Indians are in need of active
intervention for one or more
mental health issues. Primary
data for the survey was collected
from 12 States with a
sample size of 34,802 adults
and 1,191 adolescents. A pilot
study was carried out in Kolar
in Karnataka from January to
Artists bring
MG Road metro
station alive
Namma metro, Bengaluru’s
urban railway transport line
has turned into an artist’s canvas.
Renonwed artists and students
from the Srishti School
of Design are using the walls of
the metro station on MG road
to create designs and installations
that will help develop a
sense of community ownership.
The artists are looking at
building a new image, that of
a new ‘Brand Bengaluru.’ The
artists have brought the station
alive through their murals,
installations and art work. The
group is led by Arzu Mistry,
who is one of the faculty members
at Srishti, and has been
involved in this artistic engagement
with Namma metro for a
couple years now.
A man with many achievements
Meet Dr. K S Rangappa, who envisaged the
future of the erstwhile University of Mysore
for which he has successfully created
the required platform. Credited with number
of achievements stapled with patents
and innovative research papers, Rangappa
spoke extensively to Nadia S Ranganathan,
Reporter with CityHilights, on his achievements.
Can you elaborate on your
achievements?
There are many who achieved more than I did.
I am a hardworker in simple words, I come from
a very poor family background I had no other past
time other than reading, and my hobby was to only
read but I never dreamt of all this, never not once
did I have the slightest clue. The interest was created
when I was in my B.Sc and after M.Sc, all I wanted
was a job so that I can support my family. I used
to earn Rs 400 and hardly spend about Rs100 and
the rest used to go to my family. I was very hard
working I wasn’t limited under working hours or
anything of that sort. To me my work never felt
like work it was pure passion. And you know hard
work never fails. Many of my well wishers told me
to continue my studies. After M.Sc I earned a scholarship
and did my research. Before getting my Ph.D
degree I got my post doctorate offer in Canada and
from that day I haven’t looked back. Canada was
my first exposure and it had entirely changed me, it
was my stepping stone. The University of Saskatchewan,
in Canada had inspired me to stay in the research
field. I have 10 countries working with me
out of which very recently one Israel academy has
awarded me one the best in the field. My interest is
to work for the molecules that are good at treating
cancer, Alzheimer and Diabetes. I have 10 patents
in the area of drug and scoring program. Infact
my group has synthesized more that 5,000 molecules.
A major credit goes to them for their hard
work. The Japan society for promotional science
has awarded me 5 awards from their university. I
also have a collaboration with Cambridge University,
UK I have published 20 papers with them. I
have travel quite a bit and that’s how I was able
to publish all these papers. I have collaborate with
JNCASR (Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced
Scientific Research) for research I have 2-3 patents
who are working with me towards cervical cancer
out of 5,000 only 10 molecules have been prominent
as of now. You can’t preserve these molecules
just because they are good you have to put them
into use. The molecules will be taken to clinical trial
and the results will know. I work for chemotherapeutics
as my background is chemistry. I always
look in for chemistry.
Why did you take up chemistry? Was
there any particular reason for this?
Personally, chemistry is the best subject. I
wasn’t a very bright child I used to score around
70% to 75%. But my teachers used to encourage
me a lot. I studied at Sharada Vilas College, Mysuru.
My foundation is strong thanks to all of them, and I
was drawn towards the subject. After my M.Sc and
Ph.D my exposure to the subject was more hence
I selected this field and I wanted to give back the
knowledge that I had gained with whatever resources
I have.
You have been the Vice Chancellor for
University of Mysore since January
2013 what are the changes you have
BGS Global Hospitals successfully performs
complex revision hip replacement surgery
Dr. KS Rangappa, Vice Chancellor, University of Mysore
Bengaluru: The hospital
giant BGS Global Hospitals,
super specialty quaternary
care center, successfully
performed a complex
revision hip replacement
surgery, benefitting the
quality of life of a 52 year
old woman from Kenya.
The surgery was led by Dr.
Basavaraj C.M and Dr. Santosh
Hakkalamani.
Margaret Wanjiru,
aged 52, was born with a
dislocated hip joint. She
underwent multiple correction
surgeries through
the years. In 1997, she
underwent a primary
hip replacement surgery
which was met with a few
hurdles. She had to go into
surgery 4 times resulting
in complete bed rest for 5
full months. The surgery
did not solve the issue at
hand, causing limping and
discomfort. In 2007, she
met with a road accident
that caused a fracture adjacent
to the replaced hip.
This was eventually fixed,
though it left her in extreme
pain, thereby affecting
her ability to walk freely.
At this point, Margaret
decided to go in for a revision
surgery and enquired
a, a few medical facilities in
the UK and US. Quoting the
high cost of surgeries in
these countries, Margaret
reached out to BGS Global
Hospital in Bangalore. Her
research suggested that
BGS Global Hospital carried
out these surgeries at
a fraction of the cost while
not compromising on the
quality of care or the quality
of implants used in the
surgery.
The patient presented
with severe damage to the
bone in the hip socket.
She was short by 2 inches
in one leg, causing a
prominent limp. She was
experiencing extreme pain
and was regularly on painkillers
to manage it.
The team at BGS Global
Hospital, led by Dr. Basavaraj
C.M, successfully
completed the revision
surgery, by reconstructing
the missing bone, using
prosthesis made of a tantalum
element, that has the
advantage of being 80%
porous, ceramic hip bearing
and techniques such
as allograft. With a well
defined surgical plan, they
were able to tackle the core
issue as well as the short
limb. The patient is now
completely pain free and
she has now regained her
limb length.
Commenting on the
case, Dr. Basavaraj C.M,
Consultant Orthopedic
Surgeon, BGS Global Hospital
said, “Although Hip
and Knee Joint Replacement
surgery is very successful,
there continues to
be a need for Revision Joint
Replacement Surgery in
cases where the prosthesis
has loosened, the bearing
surfaces have worn,
or a patient has sustained
trauma with associated
fracture adjacent to the hip
or knee joint. These procedures
can be quite involved
and require experience
in dealing with the complex
issues that arise intra
operatively.”
brought in as the VC?
I knew what I have to do for the university. I
have been in this university for the last 30 years
as a student, faculty and now the VC of this institution.
Therefore, I know the requirement of the
students and faculty. I have to give back what this
university has given me. If you see the equipments
and infrastructure, what I have given is the best. I
make it a point that whenever I get the time I visit
the lab. I prefer the laboratory more than this position.
I would definitely rate my university the best.
You are one of the leading chemists
in the country. Can you tell us your
plans?
After retiring as the VC I will have my own area
of interest. I will be independent. For now Madras
University, National Institute of Singapore (NIS)
and another Chinese professor would like to work
on the cancer treating molecules in the area of Biotech.
I haven’t accepted the offer yet.
How different is the education system
in the country when compared with
other countries?
In most of the countries, education is a serious
issue; here it’s a little casual. We cannot improve
BMTC plans to extend
services till 1 am
Bengaluru: To cope with
the following the extension
of nightlife deadlines
and yielding to the
demand for extension
of bus services till late
in the night, Bengaluru
Metropolitan Transport
Corporation (BMTC) is
planning to operate buses
till 1 am in the coming
weeks.
A senior official of
BMTC has said that the
corporation is planning
to extend the late night
services from Kempegowda
Bus Station to Kadugodi,
Anekal, Attibele,
JP Nagar, BTM Layout,
KR Puram, Yelahanka
Satellite station, Peenya,
Yeshwantpur, Kengeri,
Jigani, Hoskote and other
places.
There are already 62
buses catering to these
areas and recently, 10
more buses were added
to the late night services,
which is running till 11
pm as of now. BMTC is
charging one-and-half
times the bus fare for
those buses catering to
service after 10 pm.
The official said,
though the public commute
till 1 am in areas
like Majestic, Railway
Station and Shivajinagar,
there are no BMTC bus
services. People arriving
in the city late in the
night and those returning
home from offices are
deprived of BMTC bus facilities
and are forced to
either travel by autorickshaws
or cabs, the official
added. There was a petition
filed with Change.
org wherein more than
98% of the 15,000 people
who signed the petition
voted for BMTC services
to be run till 1 am.
Recently, BMTC introduced
night buses to certain
areas - the last bus
from Majestic to Chikkbanawara
is at 11 pm, KR
Market to Jalahalli Cross
at 10.40 pm, Shivajinagar
to Yelahanka at 10.20
pm, Yelahanka to Kengeri
at 8.25 pm, Hebbal to
Satellite Bus station at
9.15 pm, Jalahalli cross to
Bommanahalli at 10.15
pm, Hebbal to KR Puram
at 10.20 pm, Majestic
to Nelamangala at
9.20 pm and Central Silk
Board to Nelamangala
at 8.15 pm.
as a nation unless education is given importance.
Foreign countries respect intelligence they respect
any kind of job you do. That is why they are leading.
Here in our country there is a lot of politics and
that is why the talent of each individual isn’t channelized
in the right direction.
You have co-authored five books, how
did that happen?
It just happened and I lent my support and
co-authored books since the past two years. Recently
we have published book on organic chemistry.
To be honest, it is very difficult to write books.
Who inspired you? Whom would you
thank?
Earlier days my teachers encouraged me recommended
me to read more books. They had a big
hand in supporting me and encouraging me to aim
higher. And none of them discouraged me. They
used to force my father to send me to school and
not the field. My mother was my primary support
system. She used to quarrel with my father and
make sure I was sent to school. Her support and
blessings has brought me here.
Centenary celebrations were organized on
grand scale. People said you’re the right man at the
right time at the right place for making that event
happen. How do you react to this?
University of Mysuru is a 100-year-old university.
We had invited the president of India, Pranab
Mukherjee andPrime MinisterNarendraModi to inaugurate
the event. No university till now had 10
Nobel laureates invited, that’s the pride we hold.
The then HRD Minister SmritiIrani was present at
the event.
For the next person who would be
stepping into your shoes what will be
your advice to him/her?
I do not know whether he/she will listen
to me or not but whoever comes has to do a
better job than what I have done. If not then
I atleast hope they do not spoil my university
and the atmosphere.
Jagadish Shettar demands
govt to withdraw cases
against Mahadayi agitators
Bengaluru: Leader of Opposition
in the Assembly
Jagadish Shettar on Thursday
demanded the state
government to withdraw
cases against Mahadayi agitators
without any preconditions.
Speaking with media persons,
Jagadish Shettar said
the police have registered
cases against the farmers
for demanding the government
to implement Kalasa
Banduri project aimed for
supplying drinking water
to North Karantaka. “The
innocent farmers are made
to attend the court. I want
the government to withdraw
cases against such
farmers immediately. The
police have registered false
cases against 187 farmers
during the agitation. I want
the state government to
withdraw all these cases,’’
Jagadish Shettar said.
He demanded the state
government to make senior
police officer Raghavendra
Auradkar’s report public.
It may be recalled the state
government had directed
Raghavendra Auradkar
to probe police atrocities
on farmers and villagers
during Kalasa Banduri agitation
and submit a report.
He also demanded the
state government to withdraw
cases registered
against Kannada activists
for participating in protest
during Cauvery crisis in
Bengaluru. “The police have
registered cases against innocent
people and Kannada
activists. I want the police
to withdraw all these cases
and the release those who
are in the prison,’’ he said.
BJP MLA Suresh Kumar
writes letter to Siddramaiah
Bengaluru: Bharatiya Janata
Party MLA S Suresh Kumar
on Thursday appealed
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah
not to go ahead with the proposed
steel flyover between
Basaveshwara Circle and
Hebbal due to the strong opposition
from public.
Suresh Kumar, in a letter
to the chief minister, said
that any government should
be sensitive, accountable,
responsive and transparent
but in this case, all these
essential qualities of administration
are conspicuously
absent. “There are many
reasons for the opposition
of the proposed steel flyover.
One of the reasons is
that there has been no public
hearing on this massive
project involving nearly Rs
1800 crore. The other reason
is that details of this
project not made public.
Many judgments of Supreme
Court have ordered that
public hearing is necessary
on any public project involving
a huge amount of money.
In fact there are very easy
alternative solutions to ease
traffic on Bellary Road that
has been studied by these
concerned activists but their
voice is not reaching the
authorities because of the
vested interests involved in
building the steel flyover,’’
Suresh Kumar said.
