The Disabled Patriot Fund Trick-or-Treat Fun Event is scheduled for noon-4 p.m. Oct. 30 at HellsGate Haunted House, 3103 Canal St. in Lockport. The fund —which provides assistance to injured veterans across the state of Illinois— hosts three fundraisers per year, but this is the inaugural Trick-or-Treat Fun Event. “We never really did a family-oriented fundraising event before, so we’re kind of excited about it,” said Laura Harris, Disabled Patriot Fund secretary and event organizer. Admission for the event will be $8 for adults and children, and there is to be raffles, face-painting and music in addition to trick-or-treating. All the lights will be on in the haunted house as children will be able to travel to all of the dozen or so rooms and collect candy. One of the Disabled Patriot Fund board member’s sons owns HellsGate, and so the idea was brought up about three months ago of hosting an event there. The fund wanted to pursue the idea, but it usually takes a year to plan fundraisers, and this one had a timetable. “This one just came up,” Harris said. “We didn’t want to miss the opportunity, so we are just kind of throwing it together.” While Harris and the rest of the organizers aren’t sure what to expect, they are hoping to draw close to a quarter of the 3,000 patrons who pass through HellsGate on any given night. The fund wanted to make sure there was also an attraction to the event for adults. “We wanted to gear something toward the adults, so I think what they’re going to get out of it is something like a behind the scenes of the haunted house with the lights on, and how things go at night,” Harris said. The Disabled Patriot Fund was started in 2005 and during its existence has raised over $2.5 million and helped more than 300 injured soldiers, Harris said. “We help them from paying their utility bills to renovating their home and making it handicap accessible,” she said. English Language Arts teacher Gail Mickelson and her father, Craig Nelson, can trace their ancestry back to John Alden, an early American settler. Mickelson and Nelson shared stories about their ancestor’s voyage, with Mickelson wearing a shirt that read “I am a descendant of John Alden” and Nelson dressed as a pilgrim. Their ancestor, John Alden, was a tradesman who emigrated to America in 1620 on the Mayflower and was one of the founders of the Plymouth Colony. Another ancestor, Mary Chilton, was the first woman off the ship. Chilton recalls her father telling the story of getting to Holland, and how there were several points where it didn’t seem like they were going to be able to make it. It’s a story Mickelson knows well. Her father used to give a similar presentation when she was in the sixth grade.

My dream job would either be something to do with horses (trainer) or working in crime forensics. What are some of the most played songs on your iPod? Some of my most played songs include: “Am I Pretty?” by The Maine, “Be My Forever” by Christina Perry, “Not Afraid” by Eminem and “Good Mourning America” by Letlive. What is one thing people don’t know about you? One thing a lot of people don’t know about me is that I’m part Croatian. Whom do you look up to and why? I look up to my older brother Clayton because he is very kind and is extremely creative. What do you keep under your bed? I don’t keep anything under my bed. Who is your favorite teacher and why? My favorite teachers are Mrs. Cusack (social studies) and Mrs. Albright (Spanish), because they both encourage me to always be the best person I can be. What is your favorite class and why? photo submitted My favorite classes are social studies, because it’s very intriguing to learn about world history, and Spanish because I want to learn a second language. What is one thing that stands out about your school? One thing that stands out about my school is the fact that Oak Prairie is very schoolspirit oriented. What extracurricular(s) do you wish your school had? Our school usually fits all things extracurricular into the curriculum somehow, so that’s a tough question to answer. What’s your morning routine? My mornig routine usually consists of: waking up, washing my face, brushing my teeth, and eating breakfast while I watch Impractical Jokers. If you could change one thing about school, what would it be? I would make the passing periods in between classes longer, instead of four minutes, I would make it six minutes. What is your favorite thing to eat in the cafeteria? My favorite lunch in the cafeteria would be nacho el grande with cucumbers and cherry tomatoes. What is your best memory from school? My best memory from school would be the big sib program in choir. I loved having one, and now that I’m in eighth grade, I love being one. Standout Student is a weekly feature for The Lockport Legend.
