I’ve dialed it down on that this year. 10 Questions with Bri Hillock Bri Hillock is a sophomore on the Lockport Township girls tennis team. She plays second doubles with Kaitlyn Graves, and the duo recently won the No. 2 doubles title at the SouthWest Suburban Conference meet. Coming into this season, the Porters were expected to be good, but you surpassed expectations. What has made it work? For me, I knew in the offseason that Kate and I had something special. Something a lot of No. 2 doubles teams don’t have. But one thing I didn’t know was the depth of the team. That’s been key. What has made you and Kate have something special? Non playing-wise and playing-wise, we both have the same goals. We wanted to win conference and get out of the sectional, to state. Individually when we play, I can set her up well with volleys. How did you get started playing tennis? I started, along with my twin sister — Cassidy Hillock — when I was 4 years old. But I really didn’t start playing competitively until I was 11. I didn’t want to play basketball anymore, so I started playing tennis all the time. Besides, tennis runs in my family as my mom [Wendy] and my dad [Ray] play too. Since you and your sister both play tennis on the team, are you interchangeable in singles and doubles? And who wins when you play each other? Last year, I was playing No. 2 doubles to start, but moved to No. 3 singles. When Cassidy and I play against each other, we’re pretty friendly. We leave it on the court, but move on afterward. I think we’re pretty even. What is it about tennis that makes it the best sport for you? It’s a good stress relief. I remember when I was younger, I’d always feel better after playing. It was an instant stress relief as to what was bothering me. 22nd Century Media File Photo So what do you like playing better, singles or doubles? Doubles, because there’s more of a placement strategy. That’s what I like, the strategy. I like that in school too. I like strategizing, and my favorite classes in school are English and chemistry. What have you learned from Lockport tennis coach, Bob Champlin? I’ve learned with volleys to guide the ball into the court more. Also, to step in more when hitting a serve and to keep my emotions in Do you have any prematch superstitions? I always get kind of nervous before a big match, especially if I’ve beat the person before. So I just clear my mind to forget that and tell myself I can do anything as long as I believe. You still have a while, but do you plan to play tennis in college? It depends on what college I go to. Right now I want to go to Texas A&M University and study Meteorology. I always liked Texas A&M and their football team. Then I found out they have one of the top Meteorology programs. What is the best thing about being an athlete at Lockport? It’s that all the other athletes support you. Even if you don’t play a major sport, they still support you. Plus, all the coaches are really good too. The team finished first at the IESA Sectional Meet on Oct. 8, and one athlete placed first overall with a time of 12:20. “Congratulations to the team and coaches,” said Homer Athletic Director Amanda Monahan in a statement.
