T HE name Chantrey is a familiar one to people living in Norton and Woodseats. There’s the Chantrey pub, Chantrey Road and there even used to be a Chantrey Picture House on Chesterfield Road. But how many people travelling through the area know about the man these were named after? Sir Francis Leggatt Chantrey was a famous sculptor, born in Norton in 1782, but his influence reached far beyond our area. He started off as a wood carver but after receiving lessons in painting he decided he wanted to become an artist and went to try his fortune in Dublin, Edinburgh and London. In 1819 he visited Italy and met the most distinguished sculptors of Florence and Rome. He became a member of the Royal Academy and was knighted in 1835. Chantrey's works are numerous and include statues of George Washington in the State-house at Boston, Massachusetts, George III in The Guildhall, London, William Pitt the Younger in Hanover Square, London, and James Watt in Westminster Abbey.
