A $500,000 endowment gift or a sixyear, $20,000 annual gift, allows the College to provide a named scholar position to deserving faculty members. The College is currently seeking interested alumni to assist in funding four endowed faculty scholar positions. The message below demonstrates the value of a Faculty Scholar position, as reflected in this letter from Associate Dean Ralph Brubaker, who recently held the Mildred Van Voorhis Jones Faculty Scholar position. McCarty Tuscola, Illinois RE: The Mildred Van Voorhis Jones Faculty Scholar Gentlemen, This week, I officially rotated out of my Faculty Scholar position at the College of Law, and I didn’t want that occasion to pass without sending you a short note expressing my sincere gratitude for the generous funding of this position. These Faculty Scholar positions are enormously valuable to both the faculty occupying them and to the College of Law, and we are extremely lucky to have the financial support making them possible. For me, the most invaluable aspect of the Faculty Scholar position has been the release time from teaching it has provided, allowing me to devote additional energies to my scholarly research and writing. To give you an idea of how helpful this has been to my scholarly endeavors, I have enclosed copies of all my publications during the past two years (with the exception of my new casebook and accompanying teacher’s manual, which will not be in print until later this month and for which I’ve enclosed only the title pages and tables of contents). I’m extremely proud of this body of work and am especially proud that it all bears my designation as the Mildred Van Voorhis Jones Faculty Scholar. For the College of Law, I think the most valuable aspect of the Faculty Scholar positions is their great versatility in fostering scholarly excellence among our faculty. In my case, Dean Hurd’s offer of a Faculty Scholar position was instrumental in convincing me to leave Emory Law School and return to my alma mater, and these positions are also an extremely useful device for retaining mid-level faculty being courted by other law schools. In other cases, Faculty Scholar positions are a way to jump-start a promising scholarly career interrupted by administrative or other responsibilities. In others, it is an effective interim reward/incentive instrument for faculty on a path toward a permanent endowed position. The rotating nature of the Faculty Scholar position makes it a multifaceted tool for encouraging scholarly excellence. I am extremely grateful for your having facilitated the Van Voorhis Jones Estate, which funded my Faculty Scholar position and for your continuing support of Dean Hurd, as she inspires the entire College of Law community to strive for excellence in all we do. If you walk into the lobby of the College's Deans' Suite the first thing you will see is a large bookcase displaying dozens and dozens of books on a wide variety of legal topics. This bookcase does more than provide decoration and stimulation for captive visitors waiting to meet with one of the College's academic administrators: it tells the story of the University of Illinois College of Law--a story that reflects decades of path-breaking work by many of the nation's leading legal scholars. And the legacy continues! In the last year, the Illinois law faculty has penned 38 new books in fields ranging from conservation to constitutional law, bankruptcy, health law and medical malpractice, elder law, criminal law, corporate law, labor law, cybersecurity, family wealth management, internet and computer law, family law, art law, dispute resolution, and even a College Administrator's Survival Guide. As if writing books weren't enough, however, the College of Law's faculty contin- Dean Heidi M. Hurd ues to place 7th in the nation in the production of highly influential articles and reviews (see page 14), as measured by the number of works submitted to, and downloaded from, the Social Science Research Network (SSRN)--the database which stores virtually all papers, essays, and articles produced by law professors in America. In addition to writing books and articles that affect how legislators, judges, policy makers, and other academics think about cutting edge topics in law, our faculty blog sites average nearly 4,000 daily visitors, Illinois faculty are quoted frequently in national media outlets such as the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, New York Times, National Public Radio, ABC-TV, CNBC, and ESPN and we host our own statewide television show, "Illinois Law" featuring the College’s faculty (see page 14). And if one worries that the faculty’s preoccupation with advancing knowledge comes at the price of imparting it, rest assured that the faculty is tremendously committed to excellence in the classroom. Indeed, during the past 16 years in which the University of Illinois has presented campus-wide Excellence in Graduate and Professional Teaching Awards, law faculty members have won the award eight times (with two additional honorable mentions!). In short, almost a quarter of the law school’s faculty have been celebrated for being among the very best teachers on a campus that has 3,000 faculty! In March, 2006, Leiter’s Law School Reports stated that it was "hard pressed to think of a law school more completely transformed in the last few years than Illinois." And indeed, over the past four years, thirteen new tenured and tenure-track faculty members have joined the College’s already-renowned faculty, including eleven lateral hires who brought with them impressive national reputations developed at other top-ranked law schools. Today, the faculty of the College of Law is one of the most energetic, ambitious, hard-working, dedicated, collaborative faculties in the nation with "fire in the belly" for making Illinois a premier center for the study of law.
