University Law Center Environmental and Land Use

Law and Economics Association Annual Meeting and at
the University of Pennsylvania School of Law Legal
Theory Workshop, and "Taxation Over Time" (paper coauthored
with Kirk Stark) at the Northwestern University
School of Law Tax Policy Colloquium. Professor Fennell
was quoted in the May 15 Washington Post in a story entitled
"Searching for a Sense of Meaning in Gifts."
FINKIN -
Published 14th edition of Labor Law
Professor Matthew W. Finkin, the Albert J. Harno and
Edward J. Cleary Chair, published the fourteenth edition
of his casebook with Professor Robert A. Gorman, Labor
Law, and the 2006 Cumulative Supplement to his treatise,
Privacy in Employment Law (2d ed. 2003). He also published
two articles--Employer Neutrality as Hot Cargo:
Thoughts on the Making of Labor Policy, in a Symposium
on The American Worker, 20 Notre Dame J. Law, Ethics &
Pub. Pol'y 541 (2006) and Life Away from Work, in the proceedings
of a conference on employee privacy held at the
Louisiana State University Law Center, 66 La. L. Rev. 945
(2006)--a national report for the Seventeenth International
Congress of Comparative Law, Representation of
Employees Within the Firm: The United States Report, 54
(Supp.) Am. J. Comp. L. 395 (2006), and a review of Jurists
Uprooted: German Speaking Émigré Lawyers in Twentieth
Century Britain (Jack Beatson and Reinhard Zimmermann
eds., 2004) in 24 Law & Hist. Rev. 459 (2006). Professor
Finkin attended the Annual Meeting of the National
Academy of Arbitrators in Washington, D.C., May 25--27,
and the spring meeting of Committee A on Academic
Freedom and Tenure of the American Association of
University Professors (AAUP) to which he is a consultant.
He addressed the Twenty-Third Carl A. Warns Labor and
Employment Law Institute at the University of Louisville
on June 8, 2006, and was a speaker at the Labor Law Trust
Group Conference in Saratoga Springs, New York, on June

27, 2006. His service as a member of the AAUP's Special
Committee on Hurricane Katrina and New Orleans
Universities brought him to an inspection visit to New
Orleans, August 16--18; and his editorship of the
Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal brought him to
the World Congress of the International Society for Labor
and Social Security Law in Paris, France, September 5--8,
in conjunction with which he presided over a joint meeting
of the Journal's Editorial Advisory Board and the Advisory
Board of the College of Law's Program in Comparative
Labor and Employment Law & Policy.
Professor Finkin, the Director of the Illinois Program in
Labor Law, was quoted in the July 14 edition of the
Chicago Tribune on union concessions in a recent agreement
between Chrysler and the United Auto Workers. The
concessions by the United Auto Workers union showed
"they're flexible in facing economic reality," said Finkin.
"They understand this is what they have to do to keep
jobs."

Served as a guest lecturer at Kyushu University in
Fukuoka, Japan for a graduate seminar
Professor Tom Ginsburg also organized the conference
and presented the papers, "Rational Design of Legal
Institutions" and "Lawyers and the Legal Complex in
Northeast Asia" to the Law and Society Association, July 7-
8; presented "The Lifespan of Constitutions" at Chuo
University in Tokyo, Japan on July 18, "International
Substitutes for Domestic Institutions" at Kobe University,
Japan on July 20, and presented "Constitutional Review in
Asia" to the Constitutional Court of Korea, July 31.
GUNSALUS -
Lectured on ethics across the nation
Professor C.K. Gunsalus participated as the capstonespeaker
on research ethics for the School of Integrative
Biology at UC-Davis in a year-long research ethics series,
presented at the Indiana University Poynter Center's annual
workshop on Teaching Research Ethics, and lectured at
the Second Annual Congress of Qualitative Inquiry on
Institutional Review Boards. She also spoke at the FOCUS
conference for Institutional Review Boards and Research
Ethics Boards and gave the keynote speech at a research
ethics conference for the Long Island Jewish Heath Care
system, "Collaborations through Communication: Breaking
