TCL Invites Families
To Share Life Through
Sports With Inspiring
Web Series
TCL, one of the world’s
leading players in the global
TV industry, is inviting
families to share life through
sports as it launches online
videos highlighting inspiring
stories of athletes.
Created in partnership
with ESPN, the four-part
web series called ‘Inspiring
Bonding Moments’ shares
the untold stories in sports,
featuring athletes from
the Philippines, Vietnam,
Thailand and Indonesia.
The first video focuses on Philippines-born football player
Simone Rota and his journey back home to seek his
biological parents.
Simone Plays It Forward
Though he lived a happy life in Italy, he never forgot this
birth country and parents. He decided to return to the
Philippines when he was 29 to search for them. He also
continued to play football, this time in the United Football
League and later on as a member of the Philippine team,
the Azkals.
In 2014, he was reunited with Sister May of the Buklod
Kalinga orphanage, who tried to help him find his parents
but they were unsuccessful. Yet Simone has found another
home and family in Sister May and the orphans as he
decided to return to Buklod Kalinga. He now runs a food
program with them and teaches the kids football.
“I try to inspire the children, teaching them that sports can
be a new way of life,” shared Simone. “But at the same time,
they have inspired me because they teach me how to live
the simple life and the importance of simple things.”
Sharing Life Through Sports
According to TCL’s Brand Marketing Manager, Amor
Joaquin-Golifardo, the web series aims to “connect people
through inspiring sports stories.”
“TCL stands for The Creative Life and we believe that
technology can and should be used to bring people
together. We are showing people another side of these
athletes and sharing very personal stories about love, loss
and giving back, that everyone can relate to and be inspired
by,” explained Ms. Joaquin-Golifardo.
As part of its 35 th anniversary celebration, TCL is also
playing it forward as it donates sporting equipment to the
orphans of Buklod Kalinga.
Simone Rota accepting the
basketball,as a symbol of
TCL’s donation, on behalf of
Buklod Kalinga. L-R: Mr. Mr.
Eason Cai, TCL Philippines
CEO, Simone Rota, Philippine
Azkals, Ms. Amor Joaquin-
Golifardo, Brand Marketing
Manager
Simone Rota of the Philippine Azkals
Abandoned in an orphanage called Buklod Kalinga by his
birthparents, Simone Rota was adopted by an Italian couple
when he was just six months old and moved to Milan with
his new family.
His love for football manifested at an early age and at 17,
he received his first professional contract and he would go
on to play for teams in Italy and Switzerland for the next 12
years.
“Like Simone, we want
to encourage the
youth to develop their
talent in sport. Aside
from catching their
favourite sports heroes
on TV, we hope that
the equipment we gave
them can help shape
the next generation of
Filipino footballers,” said
Ms. Joaquin-Golifardo.
8 DAYS FOR LESS THAN P30K!
Phuket
Phuket, a rainforested, mountainous island in the Andaman Sea, has some of
Thailand’s most popular beaches, mostly situated along the clear waters of the
western shore. The island is home to many high-end seaside resorts, spas and
restaurants. Phuket City, the capital, has old shophouses and busy markets.
by #ThriftyTraveller Richie De Quina
Day 1: The Late Arrival
Travelling alone for the 1st time in my entire life, I arrived at the new Phuket International Airport
10:00 pm Friday 14th of October to much stress as no one will assist me if ever something
untoward happened. To my pleasant surprise, travelling late has its advantages. 1st of all tickets are
very cheap, 2nd not much people at the airport which makes it easier for me to grab a cab.
Roof Top Pool of The Gig Hotel
Airport to Patong Beach is about an hour so I still have time to rest before I head out to Partee on
my very 1st night, Yipee!!!
Arrived at The Gig Hotel in Central Patong which is a small 4 Star Hotel that offered 5 Star services
and facilities (talk about this more later).
Tiger Night Club
Then to my surprise, The Beloved King of Thailand Bhumibol Adulyadej died on the 13th of October
and the entire Kingdom/Country was mourning thus 3 days of no Drinking and Party! Still it didn’t
stop me from roaming the area and went to the world famous Bangla Walking Street where all
the major bars and clubs are located and lo and behold, it was as quite as a cemetery on a Friday
Freakin Night!
But of course that part of the valuable experience I got to witness how the Thai people love and
honor their King who for 70 years (longest reign in all history) ruled Thailand.
TOTAL SPENT
Food Php 250.00 Car Rental Php 1,000.00 Hotel Php 10,000.00 Flight – 6,000.00
Sub-Total Php 17,250.00 or 55% of Budget
Day 2: The GIG Hotel (Value for Money)
Not in a rush to be a tourist, I explored everything The Gig Hotel has to offer, and everything I have
envisioned was spot on! Restaurant, Bar, Roof Top Pool, Gym, Dry Sauna, to Food and specially the
warm accommodation of its staff.
A picture perfect venue for Social Media addicts as there are a thousand places you can have your
selfies without needing to rush to the beach!
Food was quick, a lot, tasty and most importantly cheap! Decided to stay in the hotel and just RELAX
which I haven’t done in ages. (swim, gym, lounge, etc.)
TOTAL SPENT
Food Php 500.00
Sub-Total Php 500.00
Jungceylon Mall
Day 3: City Tour
In long travels (more than 3 days), it is wise pipol to do some grocery to reduce your expenses on
food. Yes, food immersion is important but you can save a lot on your cravings (chocolate, drinks,
junk foods, etc.) if you opt to stock up on those non essential items you continuously crave.
I went to Jungceylon, the Biggest Mall in Patong Beach (imagine Glorieta in Boracay) which is like
2 minutes from the hotel but WTF its closed! Most of the shops and malls in Patong and maybe the
whole of Phuket opens at 11:00 am! So not one who waste his time, I walked thru the streets of
Patong to freshen my memory of 2 years ago when I last went to this beautiful Island.
According to friends I made during the trip, Patong is generally 30% Local and 70% Tourist or
Expats. As I walked thru the neighborhood, you can see the diversity of people from white to black
to brown to whatever race you can imagine. It is a melting pot of cultures from all over the world
wanting that Phuket Thai experience.
The 3 Days of mourning has come to an end. Monday shall see all the night clubs start opening and
resume normal operations. Now I am excited!
TOTAL SPENT
Food Php 500.00 Grocery Php 1,500.00 Souvenirs Php 2,000.00
Sub-Total Php 4,000.00
Bangla Walking Street
Day 4: The Beach and the Night Life
Woke up, packed up, went straight to the beach! Phuket has more than 30 beaches and Patong is
the most popular and has more than 300 hotels (that’s right) and more small hostels all over the
tiny patch of territory. It also has the most bars (imagine Ermita in its heydays).
Patong is not your typical family friendly resort as you may opt to explore Kata, Karon, Surin or
Kamala Beach which is more beautiful but not for the single and easily bored crowd like me.
Patong is what conservative would say as a dirty, sleazy and sinful place, which is pretty accurate.
So if you are a hardcore goody type, please don’t as you will just end up criticizing everything you
see! Ofcourse im not that type so I am enjoying the environment and ambiance at one of the most
fun places on earth, Patong!
The beach is not perfect (Boracay is better) but the ambiance and mix of people make Patong an
exotic paradise. Being alone left me just to enjoy nature and pipol watch. Nightlife is something of
an experience on its own. Where can you find a place with open bars and dancing girls and boys
partying all night long? Well I haven’t been to any except for Patong.
Bangla Walking Road is a ½ kilometer stretch of road leading to Patong Beach. Lined by bars,
restaurants and souvenir Shops that sell everything from clothes, souvenirs to Ping Pong Shows!
(Its not the Sport Stxxxx) WTF!!!
Walking through the sites of Bangla is an experience in itself. People from all walks of life and
culture converged on the street called Bangla.
TOTAL SPENT
Food Php 500.00 Drinks Php 500.00
Sub-Total Php 1,000.00
Pink and Green Eggs anyone?
Awesome Ozamiz
Culinary and
Heritage Adventure!
Leading up to the long All Souls Day weekend, an intrepid bunch of
news media members from Manila and a bunch of bloggers heed off
for an adventure in Ozamiz City.
VP/LOCAL
The port City of Ozamiz is nestled in the natural harbor of Panguil bay,
a natural water boundary that separates the Zamboanga peninsula from
the rest of Mindanao. Once named Misamis for both the abundance of an
indigenous variety of palm and the Catholic masses first celebrated there
by Spanish colonizers, the city’s has been honoring the heroism of Senator
Jose Ozamiz since 1948.
The adventure into Ozamiz illustrious past started off with a thorough
briefing on the city’s status and continuing vision presided by Vice Mayor
Princess Nova Parojinog and City Tourism Officer Jaime Tomada In going
through a four inch thick book of tourism development plans, Vice Mayor
Nova highlighted the city’s Spanish Subanon heritage even as it looks
toward massive redevelopment on the dawn of what people are calling
Mindanao’s century — heralded by the election of the country’s first president
from Mindanao, Davao city Mayor Rodrigo Roa Duterte.
The tour of the city commenced immediately after lunch. A mystical belfry
in the middle of nowhere, a resort built around a natural spring touted for
its healing waters, the Rodriguez ancestral house where it is believed that
Jose Rizal once visited, and the Immaculate Concepcion Cathedral with
its colossal pipe organ with nearly 2,000 pipes soaring into the churches
vaulted ceiling.
Later in the evening, Mayor Aldong Parojinog hosted a sumptuous dinner
prepared by Ozamiz’ celebrated Chef Johann Dagandara. The dinner’s
pièce de ré·sis·tance was purple dragon fruit ice cream, a sweet and
creamy concoction subtly flavored with a variety of dragon with purple
flesh.
Next day’s adventure began at the balmy heights of Hoyohoy adventure
park where we saw its quaint stone chapel overlooking the verdant vistas
encircling Panguil bay and dared to ride what is perhaps the longest zipline
in the world.
Lunch was served at Mayor Aldong’s farm where we saw his prized patch
of purple dragon fruit, a delectable treat on its own because of its juicy
sweet flesh and mouthwatering plum color.
Joining us in the midst of the mayor’s expansive fruit farm Tourism Assistant
Secretary Ricky Alegre who apprised us of the support the national
government had earmarked to boost tourism in Ozamiz City and Misamis
Occidental. Assistant Secretary Alegre noted the fast paced construction
of roads and burgeoning commercial activity in the area, saying that
it would encourage more investment as the global business community
rediscovers Mindanao as it comes under a new era of peace.
In the evening, the groups of adventurers were regaled by a masterful
Kundiman performance as, once again, Chef Johann served Ozamiz city’s
prized Laya fish — a type of grouper prized for its subtle fresh flavor and
firm flesh.
In the early hours just as the adventurers prepared for the flight back
home, not a single one could mutter a word apart from awesome and yes,
that is Ozamiz.
NOT-YOUR-AVERAGE
Hunk!
The ‘pretty fly weird guy‘ (as how he describes himself on his Instagram account),
Luis Hontiveros captivated the crowd not just with his good looks but also his smart
pitch for his Aunt, Risa Hontiveros, when he was spotted on the campaign trail in the
last May elections will now ablaze the Cover of Village Pipol’s November issue. Let
his first ever photoshoot with Village Pipol heat up the “almost-cuddle-season”!
How do you compare traveling before being in the showbiz scene to now?
- Modesty aside though I’m not that famous yet before I started doing showbiz it was no issue
for me to take public transportation, I mean no one really minds where I am what ride I take but
now somehow things changed because sometimes when people recognizes me they would ask
photos with me & I still get overwhelmed coz there are still people who doesn’t know me yet & I
still get shy when that happens coz ever since I’m a low profile kind of guy.
How did your celebrity status affect your current lifestyle?
- Well nothing has changed much. Aside from when I go to public places, I still do my usual
routines with my friends & family. I guess I just dress more nicely now hehe before I don’t really
care LOL
What’s your favorite travel destination?
- Cebu is my favorite by far.
How many times have you visited that place?
- More than 5 times now I usually go there for the Sinulog Festival it has become
my yearly ritual & also I made some good local friends & I have a few
relatives there as well.
What are the 5 must-have things in your travel pack?
- Phone, Ipad, Charger for iphone & ipad, Personal care kit &
Sunglasses
Whats your worst traveling experience? Were you able to enjoy it
after that experience or it really ruined the entire trip?
- I guess it would be that time when me & my squad attempted to go
to Fortune Island, Batangas but we didn’t make it to the island coz in
the middle of our boat ride the weather started to get bad. Strong winds
& big waves started coming & our boat was just too small for it then the
owner of the boat suggested to go to a resort but we were only allowed
to stay on the side of it or else we need to pay but we cant just pay coz we
need to make a reservation first so when we got there the sun was back we
just played football along the shore & just swam with the locals. It was fun
but when we got back to the docks we found out that we were scammed &
there was a legitimate commercial boat that could’ve taken us to our original
destination. But we all still enjoyed.
What are the things you look first for when traveling? Is it food stops,
museums, party place etc.?
- Food stops hehe I always ask around or google what’s the local
delicacy of the place I’m visiting.
Share us your most fun travelling fun travelling experience?
- Sinulog Festival in Cebu City every year is amazing in different ways.
Would you rather travel with a large group, with special someone, or
alone?
- With special someone or my squad or both.
If you got a free trip to somewhere, everything covered for a week, where
would that be? Why?
-Greece because I am just simply amazed by the history it holds behind
those astonishing architectural designs.
Who do I want to be with in that dream travel?
- My special someone.
A New Brand
Ambassador For
OPPO?
Let the guessing games begin.
VP/ENTERTAINMENT
Manila, Philippines - A photo uploaded on
OPPO’s social media accounts sparked a guessing
game on who could possibly be the ambassador
for the mobile technology brand, which is now
the country’s bestselling smartphone brand
according to a report by German-based market
research organization GfK.
OPPO’s social media posts show that the ‘new’
brand ambassador is boy-next-door material, a
heartthrob who could sweep the ladies off their
feet.
“In the past few months, we have noticed how
some of our favorite celebrities fell in love with
our latest smartphone, the F1s, and the way it
captures stunning selfies anytime, anywhere,” said
OPPO Brand Marketing Manager Stephen Cheng.
“We can all feel the excitement of knowing who
would show us how to bring out our inner selfie
expert.”
The OPPO F1s made its debut in the Philippines
last August and proved to be an instant hit, selling
out within three days of its launch in concept and
dealer stores.
But it seems that OPPO is not just getting a new
ambassador for its brand. While the guesses keep
coming, anticipation also mounts for OPPO’s
other upcoming revelation. A photo uploaded on
OPPO’s social media accounts show silver liquid
dripping from an OPPO smartphone, hinting that
an unveiling is about to take place.
Whether you’re on a vacation or on a business trip, the tendency to
overeat is overwhelming. It might be due to environment or you are
you feel full and not binge on the buffet spread. Drinking lots of
calories.
• Make use of hotel gym to workout. Gym access are usually free.
• Bring along resistance band on long haul flights or land transfers.
precaution, there are supplements that can help you in times you fall
"Closer" Leads For An 11 th
Week, Passing Drake's "One
Dance" For The Longest
Command Of 2016
The Chainsmokers control the Billboard Hot 100 (dated Nov. 12) for an 11th week
with "Closer," featuring Halsey, rewriting the mark for the longest domination for a
song in 2016. Plus, Zay Hilfigerrr & Zayion McCall's "Juju on That Beat (TZ Anthem)"
surges 13-9.
With its 11th week atop the Hot 100, "Closer," released on Disruptor/Columbia
Records, passes Drake's "One Dance," featuring WizKid and Kyla, for the most weeks
at No. 1 for a song in 2016; "Dance" dominated for 10 weeks in May through July.
"Closer" links the longest command since Wiz Khalifa's "See You Again," featuring
Charlie Puth, led for 12 weeks in April-July 2015. (Including "Closer," only 21 No. 1s --
of 1,057 total, over the Hot 100's 58-year history -- have ruled for at least 11 weeks.)
Impressively, "Closer" commands the Hot 100 and all three of its main component
charts (Digital Song Sales, Streaming Songs and Radio Songs) simultaneously for
a fifth week; only Mark Ronson's "Uptown Funk!," featuring Bruno Mars, led all the
surveys at the same time for more weeks (nine, in 2015). "Closer" additionally tops
Billboard's Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart for an 11th week.
The Weeknd's "Starboy," featuring Daft Punk, ranks at its No. 2 high on the Hot
100 for a fourth week. It keeps at No. 2 on Streaming Songs (24.8 million, down
3 percent); lifts 3-2 on Digital Song Sales (74,000, down 11 percent) and climbs
4-3 on Radio Songs (123 million, up 8 percent). And, after 11 weeks on atop the
audio subscription services-based On-Demand Songs streaming chart for "Closer,"
"Starboy" takes over the ranking with a 2-1 rise (15.3 million on-demand clicks,
although down 6 percent). The Weeknd earns his second On-Demand Songs No. 1,
following "Can't Feel My Face" (seven weeks, 2015). "Starboy" additionally tops the
Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart for a fifth week. The song is the lead single from The
Weeknd's album of the same name, due Nov. 25.
Twenty One Pilots' "Heathens" is steady at No. 3 on the Hot 100 after logging four
weeks at its No. 2 peak. It holds at No. 2 on Radio Songs (141 million, up 4 percent);
pushes 4-3 on Digital Song Sales (61,000, down 12 percent); and drops 4-5 on
Streaming Songs (but stays essentially even from the week before with 17.9 million). It
tallies a 12th week at No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Rock Songs chart.
Lady Gaga Claims Her
Fourth No. 1 On The
Billboard 200 Albums Chart
As Joanne arrives in the pole position. The set earned 201,000 equivalent album units -- a
better-than-expected start -- in the week ending Oct. 27, according to Nielsen Music.
Joanne was released on Oct. 21 through Streamline/Interscope Records.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on
multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums
(TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Nov. 12-dated chart (where Joanne
bows at No. 1) will be posted in full to Billboard’s websites on Tuesday, Nov. 1.
Joanne follows Lady Gaga’s previous chart-toppers Cheek to Cheek (with Tony Bennett, in
2014), Artpop (2013) and Born This Way (2011).
DJ Snake's "Let Me Love You," featuring Justin Bieber, is stationary on the Hot 100
at its No. 4 peak, while D.R.A.M.'s breakthrough hit "Broccoli," featuring Lil Yachty,
likewise stays at its No. 5 high. "Broccoli" tops the Hot Rap Songs chart for an eighth
week.
Bruno Mars' "24K Magic" places at No. 6 for a second week on the Hot 100 after
debuting at No. 5 two weeks ago. It makes its greatest gains in airplay, rising 8-7 on
Radio Songs (96 million, up 12 percent).
Ariana Grande's "Side to Side," featuring Nicki Minaj, rises 8-7 on the Hot 100,
becoming the highest-charting hit from Grande's album Dangerous Woman; the title
track lead single reached No. 8 in June. She scores her highest rank since standalone
song "Focus" debuted and peaked at No. 7 on Nov. 21, 2015. Meanwhile, Minaj
earns her highest spot in nearly two years, since Nov. 22, 2014, when she ranked at
No. 5 after peaking at No. 3 with "Bang Bang," with Grande and Jessie J.
Major Lazer's "Cold Water," featuring Bieber and MO, descends 7-8 on the Hot 100,
after reaching No. 2.
Rounding out the Hot 100's top 10, gnash's "I Hate U I Love U," featuring Olivia
O'Brien, returns to its No. 10 peak (which it first reached three weeks ago). It
continues to scale Radio Songs, where it lifts 17-16 (61 million, up 1 percent).
Joanne's bow of 201,000 units is larger than what industry forecasters estimated. On Oct.
25, sources had pegged the album to start with around 180,000 (and that was an upgrade
from 140,000 a few days earlier).
The album’s 201,000 launch is the fourth-largest debut of 2016, and the second-biggest for
a woman. Ahead of it are Drake’s Views (1.04 million), Beyonce’s Lemonade (653,000) and
Frank Ocean’s Blonde (276,000 units).
In terms of traditional sales, Joanne sold 170,000 -- the seventh-largest bow of the year,
and the second-biggest for a woman. The only larger starts were registered by Drake’s
Views (852,000 copies sold), Beyonce’s Lemonade (485,000), Frank Ocean’s Blonde
(232,000), David Bowie’s Blackstar (174,000), Radiohead’s A Moon Shaped Pool (173,000)
and Blink-182’s California (172,000).
Also notable: Gaga is the first woman with four No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 in the
2010s. She passes Beyonce and Taylor Swift, each with three during the decade. Among all
acts, Justin Bieber and Drake lead with six Billboard 200 No. 1's each since 2010, while One
Direction and Kanye West each boast four.
