Reducing Waste: Closing the Loop
The California Resource Recovery Association (CRRA)
just hosted its 40th annual conference and trade show.
Since 1974, CRRA has hosted an event where people
from the waste & recycling industry gather to learn,
collaborate, develop, network and help shape the
Zero Waste agenda for California. Each year CRRA
recognizes 14 award winners in various categories.
This year Goodwill industries of San Diego County was
honored to win the Outstanding “Closing the Loop”
Commitment Award. This award is given to a business,
government agency, community-based organization
or school that has implemented an innovative program
that features the procurement of products that reduce waste, have recycled content and/or are safer
alternatives to toxic products. Our Curb Up partnership with Waste Management of North
County and the City of Oceanside caught the attention of CRRA leadership and we were honored with the
award. We will continue to work within our community to minimize waste and bring jobs to San Diegans.
Steve Rose - 28 Years Strong
Steve loves a lot of things about his job at Goodwill: two of
his favorites are tinkering with the computer and running the
washer and dryer in the laundry department. When Steve
started his career at Goodwill 28 years ago, he began as a
janitor. Due to the fact that he loves technology, Steve
became a cashier. He eventually moved into IT as a
computer technician and most recently began his work
in the laundry department. These are all incredible feats
for Steve because he cannot see out of his left eye and
cannot hear. His right eye has some sight but it is quite blurry
because of glaucoma. He communicates with his co-workers
and family by using sign language. In Steve’s free time, he enjoys
working on his home computer – he has memorized the
keyboard in order to navigate the system like a pro. He loves
shopping at Best Buy with his 9 year old son. Steve has been
married for 14 years. He recognizes his wife by the feeling
of her thumb. Steve thinks the best part of his job is that he
has the chance to be on his feet and move around a lot. He
likes to remain active and not spend too much time sitting.
We are blessed to have Steve as part of our Goodwill family.
