Mission Driven Ambassador
Wins University of Phoenix Scholarship
“I love being a Goodwill Ambassador precisely because of our Mission.
I am a grateful recipient of that Mission and I love being able to bestow the benefits
of the Mission on others.”
Our Donations Department Manager, Kevin,
recently applied for and won a full-tuition scholarship
with The University of Phoenix: a program that is
exclusive to Goodwill employees. The
scholarship can be used immediately to pursue an
undergraduate or master’s degree from the University
of Phoenix. This program will help recipients expand
their skill set and prepare them to move into upper level
management positions.
“The Goodwill Mission is one of the most
important aspects of my life, to be quite honest. It
is an easy thing to be enthusiastic about,” said
Kevin. “I have seen the results, the ‘return on
investment’, so to speak. To see another human
being enabled to achieve something that they wouldn’t
have been able to achieve without an organization that
espouses such a mission is a reward unto itself.”
Kevin says that the Goodwill mission has
given him a purpose whether he is at work or at home;
whether he is doing mundane or exciting things. At
Goodwill, Kevin has the role of a leader and assists in
the hiring and promotion process. He finds joy in this
process because he has had a direct hand in hiring
folks that were very much in need of work.
He has watched several people in his
department earn promotions during his time with the
organization. He is proud of the fact that some of these
people were facing very harsh realities prior to joining
Goodwill. “I feel incredibly grateful to have been
able to give these folks hope again by giving them
a job, by improving their employability through
training and mentoring, and by continuing to improve
their prospects through promotions,” said Kevin.
Kevin has seen first-hand how being
employed restores the dignity of these folks and how
important it is for them to provide for themselves and
their families. Several have been promoted time
and again because of the mentoring and training
they have received. They have been placed in the
position to ‘pay it forward’ and hire others
who were in the same place of hardship that
they themselves previously were.
“I feel incredibly blessed to work for such an
organization where we, collectively, are able to give
people opportunities and then watch them grow
and develop,” shared Kevin. “My wife and I teach
our children the value of helping and encouraging
others. We strive to impart these valuable
Goodwill life lessons in our family.”
Prior to becoming a Goodwill Ambassador
Kevin served in the Navy and was selected to
attend the Naval Academy (USNA - Annapolis),
graduating with an Engineering Degree. Kevin was
deployed several times on Aircraft Carriers, the last
time in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom onboard
USS Constellation in the Arabian (Persian) Gulf.
