Senator Scavello to Host Pathways to Pardons Seminar
Stroudsburg – Senator Mario Scavello, in partnership with Lieutenant Governor
Mike Stack, will host the seminar Pathways to Pardons on Tuesday, November
15 from 6-8 PM at the Monroe County Emergency Management office
(100 Gypsum Road, Stroudsburg, PA 18360). The event is free to the public and
will inform constituents about the pardon process in Pennsylvania.
“For some people, a single poor decision may have ruined his or her ability
to obtain gainful employment or move toward becoming a productive member
of society. In some cases, as long as an individual has committed no further
offenses, applying for and obtaining a pardon may help them ‘push the restart
button’ and put their past behind them,” said Senator Scavello.
Lieutenant Governor Mike Stack will discuss the Governor’s pardon process
and there will be a Q&A session following the presentation. Individuals interested
in learning about the application process are encouraged to attend.
While the event is free to the public, an RSVP is required. To reserve your spot
at the seminar, please contact Kristine Bush of Senator Scavello’s office at 570-
620-4326 or kbush@pasen.gov.
Rotary Club Provides Dictionaries To Students
photos by Sabrina Schantzen
Representatives of the Slate Belt Rotary Club presented dictionaries
to third grade students at Five Points Elementary, Plainfield Elementary,
Washington Elementary, Faith Christian and Immaculate Conception Schools.
The Dictionary Project is designed to aid third grade teachers in their goal
of helping all of their students become better writers, readers and thinkers.
This project began as part of Rotary International’s mission to promote
literacy throughout the world.
A dictionary is a powerful reference tool. Its usefulness goes beyond the
spellings, pronunciations and definitions it lists. It is a companion for solving
problems that arise as a child develops his or her reading, writing and
creative thinking abilities.
The Slate Belt Rotary Club meets every Thursday from 6:00 p.m.-
7:00 p.m. at The Scorecard in Wind Gap, PA
Author” on Saturday, November 12th at 10:00am. Local author, Anna Maria
Caldera will be the featured author. She will be presenting. Sherwood Anderson
on Life and Writing. This is Anna’s tenth book and one that pays homage to her
of the common person during the post- Civil War industrialization of America.
A recurring theme was the effect of factories on farmers whose connection to
the land had been severed. While popular magazines, novels, and screen plays
of the day upheld the wealthy as the subjects of greatest interest, Anderson’s
literary output focused on the lowly. Ms. Caldara will familiarize the audience
Pocono Wildlife Rehabilitation Center
Amazes Crowd with Hawk Release
Plainfield Twp., Pa., Children and adults from the slate belt community
experienced something extraordinary on Oct. 15th. They had a first-hand look
at how an animal is released back into the wild after being rehabilitated at the
Pocono Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. The Creatures of the Night program hosted
by Waste Management at the Grand Central Environmental Education Center
discussed nocturnal animals and the release of a Red Tail Hawk.
The program included a live animal show as well as a mini trunk-or-treat for the
children. The event is just one of many education programs that Waste Management
hosts throughout the year.
After some discussion about flying
squirrels and skunks, guests had a
once in a lifetime opportunity to get an
“arm’s length” from a caged porcupine.
The porcupine, or “Porky” as the
children named him, is one of Pocono
Wildlife’s beloved animals that tags
along for the road show.
“Everyone loves the porcupine. He’s
Eric Uhler explains the habits of
porcupines and why the guests need to
stay an arms length away.
just an amazing creature that most find
interesting to see,” said Pocono Wildlife
Director Kathy Uhler.
One particular animal that isn’t considered
nocturnal but went along with the program’s Halloween theme was the
Albino crow named Einstein. Guests found
Einstein to be exciting as he squawked “hello” to everyone.
During the presentation, Kathy surprised the Waste Management team with an
announcement that she and her husband would be releasing a red-tail hawk at
the education center. The crowd went wild.
“It was such a surprise!” exclaimed Community Relations Manager Adrienne
Fors. “We had no idea she was planning this. It was definitely the highlight of
the show.”
Just before the program ended, Pocono Wildlife gathered the guests around
for a better view of the red-tail hawk release. The juvenile bird was released at
the Grand Central Environmental Education Center’s 17-acre cool season grassland
habitat, where he will enjoy hunting for mice and other small rodents.
The Grand Central Environmental Education Center is open to the public to hike
and enjoy. The community can learn more about the Grand Central Environmental
Education Center via their Facebook page, www.facebook.com/grandcentralenvironmentaleducationcenter.
Transition - An Opportunity Waiting to Happen
By Kathleen McFall
Moving to a new city. Starting a family. Changing careers. We all recognize that
transitions are a natural part of life.
This month our country faces its biggest transition as our president plans to leave
the White House while a president-elect prepares to enter. Regardless of your political
beliefs, we all recognize that every four years we have the right to vote as part of
the democratic process and help usher in a transition of such magnitude that it will
truly affect many aspects of our lives.
In the midst of change, even joyous and positive ones, like a wedding or a new
home, it is normal and healthy to feel anticipation and excitement, as well as
anxiety and uncertainty, for the beginning of something new also means the end
of something familiar. However, transitions can push us to fulfill our hope to reach
another layer of our own potential.
Think about one of life’s most basic transitions - the changing seasons. They can
pass by virtually unnoticed as we bustle through our busy lives, or, perhaps, they
reflect the life’s cycles of our own journey. Sometimes the change in seasons can
inspire us to make changes in our own lives.
Just as the trees shed their leaves in Autumn, so, too, might we contemplate some
things we want to let go.
As we approach Winter, does the cold and snow of the season remind us to slow
down and move at Nature’s speed rather than at our usual frantic pace?
Could the symbols of Spring - hope and rebirth - encourage us to reflect and
rebuild?
Can Summer’s splendor invigorate us and push us to pursue aspirations we’ve put
on hold?
What about a church in transition? Pastor Paul Wilson experienced a career change
this past summer as he transitioned from Adult Ministries Pastor to Lead Pastor at
Calvary Baptist Church on Green Pond Road in Easton, Pennsylvania.
The church had been blessed with a well-loved and highly respected pastor for 33
years, whose thoughtful preaching and leadership brought a sense of security to the
congregation and earned the esteem of its members.
However, the day would come when Calvary Church would need someone else to
guide the church because their senior pastor was also transitioning. He still had a
great passion and energy for ministry, but he sensed God was leading him to help
make a plan for the next generation of the church, and that God was redirecting his
own focus.
Thus, Calvary Church became a church in transition and transitions that involve
people and relationships are more difficult than those that simply involve facilities
and schedules.
Pastor Wilson became the new Lead Pastor at Calvary Church and understood the
task involved with a church transition.
“I have been at Calvary Baptist Church for 7 years, and I enjoyed my role in Adult
Ministries. When I was approached for consideration as Lead Pastor at Calvary
Church, with over 1,500 members and regular attendees, I was, and still am, both
excited and scared.”
Pastor Wilson, knew he would welcome the opportunity for increased preaching.
”To bring people to God in the spirit of worship and discuss what our faith says
about God - to see Him for who He is and to try to understand what that means for
us and what He means to us is important to me. God is intertwined in our heart and
in our lives.”
Because of his previous role at Calvary Church, Pastor Wilson was known by the
church members and he knew “the DNA of the church”.
However, he acknowledges that he has different strengths from his predecessor.
“People recognize how I am different, and it is my hope that they embrace it.”
He often asks himself, “What is the calling I have at Calvary at this point? What do
I need to do well and what things am I okay at failing?”
He adds, “As a leader you work into a discussion and you help put things together.
We need to ask the right questions, including what is the purpose of our Sunday
morning gathering and how do we achieve this? What is the aim of what we do
outside of Sunday mornings. Are there new ministries, new directions and purposes?
I recognize that we can differ in our answers and I am okay with that.”
He concluded, “I need to know the story that has come before me. Then I want to
be able to retell the story and show people how they are a part of the grand narrative
that threads it all together”
Transitions are often a part of growth. Difficult as they may be at times - whether
church, state or nature - they are part of the larger picture called “Life”.
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 11 TH
ANTIOXIDANTS-
GLUTATHIONE
By Jackie Talero-Rueda, The Crunchy Mom
I want to share with you the most powerful antioxidant
you have and one you have most likely haven’t heard of.
Glutathione is produced in every cell in our body from the amino acids
cysteine, glutamic acid, and glycine. It is a powerful antioxidant that
inhibits the formation of, and protects against cellular damage from free
radicals. Remember, free radicals are your natural biological response
to environmental toxins. Glutathione helps to defend the body against
damage from cigarette smoking, exposure to radiation, chemotherapy,
and toxins such as alcohol. As a detoxifier of heavy metals and drugs,
it aids in the treatment of blood and liver disorders. Not only does
glutathione protect individual cells but also the tissues of arteries,
brain, heart, immune cells, kidneys, lenses of the eyes, liver, and lungs.
It is essential to maintaining a healthy immune system. Glutathione
also protects the skin against oxidant damage which makes it have an
anti-aging effect. As one gets older glutathione levels drop resulting in
a decreased ability to activate free radicals. It helps prevent cancer and
can be given intravenously as an alternative treatment to certain types of
cancer to aid detoxification. A study published in the Cell Biochemistry
and Function highlights, “Elevated levels of glutathione in tumor cells are
able to protect such cells in bone marrow, breast, colon, larynx and lung
cancers.” Jeremy Appleton, ND from the department of nutrition at the
National College of Naturopathic Medicine says “There’s no evidence
that supplementing with glutathione, even intravenously, is in any way
going to make any cancer worse. In fact, the evidence we have suggests
the opposite. It suggests that glutathione and other antioxidants, far
from interfering with the activity of chemotherapy, appear to reduce
side effects without decreasing efficacy and may, in fact, improve the
efficacy of the chemotherapy in fighting cancer.” Glutathione can be
taken in supplemental form but it usually isn’t easily absorbed and used
by the body. A supplement called NAC can aide in the production of
glutathione. In order to naturally create glutathione you need to support
your methylation pathways by eating “methylating nutrient” foods. (I will
be covering the methylation pathway in a future article). Eat foods rich in
folate, selenium, vitamin C and E. Take a B-complex that contains Methyl
B vitamins and make sure your multivitamin contains folate, methylfolate,
or 5-MTHF, NOT folic acid. Folic acid is
synthetic and some people can’t convert it to the
bioavailable form that the body can immediately
use. If you are not providing your body with
bioavailable folates and B vitamins you are most
likely not producing enough glutathione.
Scavello: Senate Passes Measure to Prohibit Excessive Tethering of Dogs
Harrisburg -- Senator Mario Scavello (R-40) said the Senate this week approved
legislation he’s long championed to prohibit animal cruelty in the form of
excessive tethering of dogs.
Under House Bill 869, as amended by the Senate, tethering a dog outside for
more than nine straight hours would be considered neglect, as would tethering
for more than 30 minutes in excessive heat or cold. The measure also outlines
the length and type of tether and requires access to drinking water and shade.
“Chaining a dog outside for most of the day or in extreme conditions has long
been, to me, a form of neglect, and I am pleased to support passage of this
amended bill to finally outlaw this abuse,” said Scavello. “There are times
when tethering our dogs is necessary and the vast majority of citizens do it in a
humane manner. But, for too long neglectful owners have been allowed to get
away with this awful treatment, and I’m glad the Senate took action to stop it.”
The neglect would be considered a summary offense, punishable by a fine of
up to $750. Other provisions of the bill include:
• The creation of a new definition of “aggravated cruelty to animals” in order to
provide tougher penalties for crimes committed against animals.
• The addition of horses to Pennsylvania’s animal cruelty laws.
• A provision for the forfeiture of animals by abusers.
The bill was sent back to the House of Representatives for concurrence on
Senate amendments. If approved by the House, it will be sent to the governor to
be signed into law.
You can follow Senator Scavello on Twitter and Facebook.
Safety First with Fall Car Care
What you should know to get ready for winter
(Family Features) Conducting routine maintenance on your
vehicle is necessary to maintain optimal performance and prevent
costly repairs. As colder weather approaches, and with it the
potential for treacherous road conditions, giving certain areas of
your car special attention can also protect your safety.
"Getting your vehicle ready for winter while temperatures are
still mild is a proactive approach to preventive maintenance that helps ensure safety
and reliability when severe winter weather strikes," said Rich White, executive director,
Car Care Council.
The following tips will help you learn how to care for the systems and features most
likely to affect your safety as winter approaches. Learn about the benefits of regular
vehicle care, maintenance and repair, and order a free copy of the council's Car Care
Guide, at www.carcare.org.
Brakes: The brake system is a car's most important safety system. A faulty brake
system may impede your ability to safely slow your vehicle in inclement driving
conditions or avoid an accident. Brakes sustain normal wear and eventually need to
be replaced for both performance and safety reasons. Ignoring routine maintenance
and letting brake pads wear too thin can lead to costly rotor and drum replacement, in
addition to compromising your ability to execute a sudden stop safely.
* Have your complete brake system thoroughly inspected annually and replace
equipment as needed.
* If your car is pulling to the left or right, or if you hear odd noises when you apply
the brakes, you should have your brakes inspected. Other warning signs include an
illuminated brake warning light, brake grabbing, low pedal feel, vibration, hard pedal feel
and squealing.
* Don't overlook the parking brake, which also may require adjustment or replacement
parts.
Wheels and Tires: When roads become wet or icy, the right wheels and tires can help
ensure you have the traction you need to maintain control. Maintaining tire balance
and wheel alignment reduces tire wear and improves handling and fuel economy. Tire
replacement is necessary if the tread depth is below the minimum legal requirement,
or if the sidewalls are severely cracked or punctured. In addition, normal wear and road
conditions can take their toll on your car's steering and suspension system and disrupt
the alignment, which in turn reduces optimum handling.
* Use the "penny test" to check your tread; if you see Lincoln's head above the tread,
you are ready for new tires.
* Have your car's alignment checked at least annually or at the first sign of improper
handling or uneven wear.
* Check inflation pressure at least once a month (including the spare) and once per
week in the winter.
* Rotate and balance tires every 6,000 miles to avoid accelerated wear on shock
absorbers and struts.
Battery: Your battery should be securely mounted, with connections clean, tight and
corrosion-free. If the battery is three years old or more, it should be tested and replaced
if necessary.
Headlights: Headlights play a major role in safe driving; the chances for accidents
increase if you can't see or be seen. The lighting system provides nighttime visibility,
signals and alerts other drivers, and supplies light for viewing instruments and the
vehicle's interior.
* If there is any doubt about whether or not your headlights should be on, turn them on.
* Keep headlights, tail lights and signal lights clean. External dirt and debris can dim
operational lights, making it difficult to be seen by others.
* Make sure your headlights are properly aimed. If they aren't, headlights blind other
drivers and reduce your ability to see the road.
* Don't overdrive your headlights. You should be able to stop inside the illuminated area;
otherwise you are creating a blind crash area in front of your vehicle.
* Replace dimming, rapidly blinking or non-functioning lights immediately, but check
first to ensure a loose or faulty fuse isn't the source of the problem.
Windshield Wipers: The wiper system keeps excessive water, snow and dirt from
building up on the windshield, maintaining clear visibility. Many factors can accelerate
the replacement of wipers, including operating conditions, frequency of use, material
and type of wipers and weather.
* In general, replace blades every six months or when cracked, cut, torn, streaking or
chattering.
* Be aware that some vehicles have two washer fluid reservoirs. Check levels monthly
and use washer fluid only; do not use water.
