SCIENCE NORTH:
LEADERS IN SELLING SCIENCE
AROUND THE WORLD
Guy Labine
CEO, Science North
With two world-class science centres in Sudbury,
a permanent base in Thunder Bay, and a
full roster of programming in cities such as
Timmins, Sault Ste. Marie and Kenora, Science North is
truly Northern Ontario’s science centre. However, most
Sudburians don’t realize that Science North, Canada’s
second largest science centre, can just as easily be
associated with Hong Kong, Barbados, Philadelphia,
Singapore, Houston, London and Shanghai.
In 1996, Science North created an International
Sales unit to market and sell the award-winning
travelling exhibitions and multimedia theatres created
by its highly-skilled staff scientists and in-house
production teams. Recognizing an industry need,
Science North began selling and leasing its popular
exhibits to other science centres seeking to provide
interactive, educational and fun experiences to their
own visitors. Twenty years later, Science North is one
of the largest Canadian exporters of travelling science
exhibitions and a major global producer of multimedia
theatre experiences.
Our travelling exhibits premiere at Science North
and then tour throughout North America, and in some
cases overseas, for 5-7 years. Science North’s experience
and expertise in operating two science centres gives it
a unique position in the travelling exhibit production
business. Given this expertise, we ensure that our
exhibitions meet the needs of both local visitors and
international clients.
When Science North develops a new travelling
exhibition, a significant amount of analysis is completed
to select the topic by surveying visitors and leasing
clients. The results of these surveys guide the topic of
the exhibition and the visitor experiences contained
within. The Science North business model for travelling
exhibits is based on developing a new exhibition every
two years. We do this for two reasons: The first is to
provide a renewed experience for visitors at Science
North and the second is to offer new product for our
external clients.
Over 7 million visitors in over 55 venues around
the world have experienced Science North’s travelling
exhibitions. Most recently, visitors to the Canadian
Embassy, Canada House, in London, England, had the
opportunity to experience New Eyes on the Universe,
an exhibition created for Sudbury’s own SNOLAB
to highlight the Nobel Prize-winning work of Dr. Art
MacDonald. Other past venues for Science North’s
exhibitions include the Hong Kong Science Museum,
Space Center Houston, the Lawrence Hall of Science in
Berkeley, California, Telus World of Science Edmonton,
the Arizona Science Center in Phoenix, and the Pacific
Science Center in Seattle. Science North is extremely
