SPONSORED SONGS OF PRAISE Inspired by Santa Margarita in Menorca and Christ Church in Lille, we tried a Sponsored Songs of Praise as a fundraiser in October. It was very well supported and thoroughly enjoyed by all who participated. We made DKK 5680 kroner for the church, so it was a very successful fund-raiser. Many people asked afterwards when we are going to do it again. The top seven hymns (i.e. those with the most votes) were: Be thou my vision Thine be the glory Dear Lord and Father of mankind Love divine, all loves excelling We have a gospel to proclaim Father, Lord of all creation Ye that know the Lord is gracious Darren led the service and wrote something about each of the hymns in the service sheet. He asked four of the people who chose the winning hymns to say a few words about their choice. Graeme Lloyd-Roberts, who chose "Love divine, all loves excelling", spoke about how it reminded him of his holidays in Wales and of Methodist churches. Later in life he realised that "it was not about romantic love (so not for weddings, really), as it was about God's love in both directions, starting with Jesus coming to save us and ending with our reflection of God's love at the end of time." Carole Rasmussen, who chose "Dear Lord and Father of mankind", talked about how it took her back to morning assembly at her grammar school. It was also sung at various family funerals, so it was "pure nostalgia" which made her choose this hymn. In her words, this hymn, "is both embracing and uplifting, warmly encouraging everyone to join in, not so much with gusto or joy, but with deep feeling, especially when we reach the 'quietly' sung 4th verse". ~ 16 ~ ~
The Revd Palle Thordal chose "Thine be the glory", because it had become the final hymn of the Easter Night Liturgy at Kastrup Church, where he was priest, for the last 20 years. In his own words "The hymn, both the melody and the lyric, is an enthusiastic fanfare for the risen Christ - especially if you can get a trumpet to help the organ. After singing 'Thine be the Glory' we used to exit the church, carrying our small candles out into the dark street and ringing the 3 big bells around midnight to announce the resurrection to the astonished neighbours." Anton Kongshøj-Munch, who chose "Be thou my vision", said that there were two reasons why he chose this hymn. The first was that the first time he heard it was "at the beginning of learning the longing for God himself above all else" and that this was a turning point in his life. The second was that it really expresses the spirituality that he loves and lives. He went on to say " This is simply one of the best prayers ever: Be Thou my vision!" and " God honours such a wish and the prayer for God to be our vision is never prayed in vain!" Mie, our organist, was disappointed that "Jerusalem" didn't come in the top seven, so she played it as the choir processed out after the service. Better luck next time, Mie!
