Things to do
Laguna Beach
Laguna Beach is a seaside resort city located in southern Orange County, California. It is known
for a mild year-round climate, scenic coves, environmental preservation, and artist community.
The population in the 2010 census was 22,723.
Historically a territory of Paleoindians, the Tongva people and then Mexico, the location became
part of the United States following the Mexican–American War. Laguna Beach was settled in the
1870s, officially founded in 1887 and, in 1927 its current government was incorporated as a city.
In 1944, the city adopted a council-manager form for its government. The city has remained
relatively isolated from urban encroachment by its surrounding hills, limited highway access, and
a dedicated greenbelt. The Laguna Beach coastline is protected by 5.88 miles (9.46 km) of state
marine reserve and an additional 1.21 miles (1.95 km) of state conservation area.
Tourism is the primary industry with an estimated three million people visiting the community
annually. Annual large events include the Pageant of the Masters, Festival of the Arts, Sawdust Art
Festival, Art-A-Fair, Bluewater Music Festival, and Kelpfest.
History
Laguna Beach was the habitation site of a prehistoric paleoindian civilization. In 1933, the first
fossilized skull of a paleoindian found in California was uncovered during construction on St.
Ann’s Drive. Known as “Laguna Woman”, the skull originally was radiocarbon dated to more than
17,000 BP, however, revised measurements suggest it originated during the Holocene era 11,700
years before present. Subsequent research has found several prehistoric encampment sites in
the area.
Historically, the indigenous people of the Laguna Beach area were the Tongva. Aliso Creek served
as a territorial boundary between Gabrieleno and Acjachemen groups, or Juanenos, named by
Spanish missionaries who first encountered them in the 1500s. The area of Laguna Canyon was
named on an 1841 Mexican land grant map as, Cañada de las Lagunas (English:Glen of the
Lagoons). After the Mexican-American War ended in 1848, the area of Alta California was ceded
to the United States. The treaty provided that Mexican land grants be honored and Rancho San
Joaquin, which included north Laguna Beach, was granted to José Antonio Andres Sepúlveda.
Following a drought in 1864, Sepúlveda sold the property to James Irvine.[15] The majority of
Laguna Beach was one of the few parcels of coastal land in Southern California that never was
included in any Mexican land grant.
Settlers arrived after the American Civil War. They were encouraged by the Homestead Act and
Timber Culture Act, which granted up to 160 acres of land to a homesteader who would plant at
least 40 acres of trees. In Laguna Beach, settlers planted groves of eucalyptus trees. In 1871, the
first permanent homestead in the area was occupied by the George and Sarah Thurston family
of Utah on 152 acres of Aliso Creek Canyon. In 1876, the brothers William and Lorenzo Nathan
“Nate” Brooks purchased tracts of land in Bluebird Canyon at present-day Diamond Street. They
subdivided their land, built homes and initiated the small community of Arch Beach. In his book,
History of Orange County, California, Samuel Armor cited permanent homestead of Nate Brooks
as the beginning of the modern day town and described Brooks as the “Father of Laguna Beach.”
The community in Laguna Canyon and around the main beach expanded during the 1880s.
The city officially founded a post office in 1887 under the name Lagona (sic), but the postmaster
in 1904, Nicholas Isch, successfully petitioned for a name correction to Laguna Beach. By then
Laguna Beach already had developed into a tourist destination. Hubbard Goff built a large hotel
at Arch Beach in 1886, which later was moved and added to Joseph Yoch’s Laguna Beach
Hotel built in 1888 on the main beach. Visitors from local cities pitched tents on the beaches for
vacation during the warm summers.
The scenic beauty of the isolated coastline and hills attracted plein-air painters in the early 1900s.
William Wendt, Frank Cuprien, and Edgar Payne among others settled there and formed the
Laguna Beach Art Association. The first art gallery opened in 1918 and later became the Laguna
Beach Art Museum. Precursors to The Festival of the Arts and the Pageant of the Masters began in
1921, and eventually were established in their present day form by Roy Ropp in 1936. Due to its
proximity to Hollywood, Laguna also became a favorite filming location. Starting in 1913, dozens
of silent films were made at local coves with Harold Lloyd, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.,
and others. Actors and film crews stayed during long production shoots at the Arch Beach Tavern
on the hillside above Moss Street.
The arrival of painters, photographers, filmmakers, and writers established Laguna Beach as a
noted artist community. Although there only were approximately 300 residents in 1920, a large
proportion of them worked in creative fields. The small town remained isolated until 1926 because
the long winding Laguna Canyon road served as the only access. With the completion of the
Pacific Coast Highway in 1926, a population boom was expected. In order to protect the small
town atmosphere of the art colony, residents who called themselves “Lagunatics” pushed for
incorporation. The municipal government for Laguna Beach incorporated as a city on June 29,
1927. The city experienced steady population growth since that time, rising from 1900 residents
in 1927 to more than 10,000 in 1962, and becoming four times larger in area.
Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton
That name is heard daily on both local and national news but very few people know just where it is
located or, for that matter, what it is.
The history of the base starts way back in the early Forties when both the Army and the Marine
Corps were searching for an area to create a large training facility. In 1942, 122,798 acres located
in Rancho Santa Margarita y Los Flores were transformed into the largest Marine Corps base in the
country. On September 25, 1942, Franklin D. Roosevelt officially dedicated the base. In October
of 1944 the base was declared a “permanent installation” and in 1946 became the home of
the 1st Marine Division. Camp Pendleton is named after Marine General Joseph Henry Pendleton
(1860-1942).
A $20 million upgrade and expansion went into effect during the Korean War which included the
creation of Camp Horno. During that period approximately 200,000 Marines passed through the
base on their way to Korea and later Vietnam. In the ensuing years Camp Pendleton has continued
to grow. Recently efforts have been put into place to preserve the history of founders of the base.
That culminated in the recognition of the original ranch house as a National Historic Site.
Today, Camp Pendleton spans over 125,000 acres and plays host not only to the Marines, but all
branches of the U.S. military. The coastline (17 miles) is used for amphibious shore-to-shore training.
The main base located in the Mainside Complex has a daytime population that can exceed
100,000. Camp Pendleton remains the last undeveloped portion of the Southern California coastline
and acts as a gateway between Orange County and San Diego County. In 1954, the camp
started hosting Basic Training familiarization for teens between the ages of 14 and 17. They are
referred to as the “Devil Pups.” The training focuses on fitness, discipline, love of country and the
Marine Corps. It is a program that is still in effect to this day.
So the next time that you take the I-5 on your way to Sea World or Disneyland just remember, that
empty area of undeveloped land that you are coasting through is a training ground for many fine
young men and women who have served and are still serving your country today.
Should I
Buy Organic?
There has been an explosion in the marketing
and availability of organic foods over the over
the past few years, so it’s certainly no wonder
that one of the most common questions is
“should I buy organic?” Here are the facts based
on the best science to date:
Choosing organic is clearly better for the
environment.
This is demonstrable and occurs through numerous
channels, including conservation of natural
resources and less pollution for our water and
soils.
Consuming organic foods reduces the
body’s exposure to pesticides.
This has been confirmed through numerous
scientific studies. Adults and children who consume
organic foods have measurably lower
levels of pesticides in their bodies. Perhaps the
bigger question here is – “Are the levels of pesticide
exposure received from eating conventional
foods harmful to our health?” At this point
in science, we simply do not have the data to
definitively answer this question. Pesticides approved
for use are reported to be safe at or below
certain threshold levels. It is clear however
that pesticides are harmful to exposed farm
workers, along with “non-target” wildlife and are
definitely not healthy substances.
For children there are two additional caveats to
consider on the safety front. Because children
consume more food calories per unit of body
weight and because their cells are dividing at a
much more rapid rate, they are at greater risk for
potential toxic effects from pesticide exposure
(a developing fetus is at the greatest risk). Additionally,
it is common for some kids to have
very restrictive eating patterns with consumption
of only one or a few types of fruits or vegetables
on a regular basis. If this is the case, they will experience
a greater number of exposures to the
same pesticides which can also exacerbate risk.
The Environmental Working Group (EWG), a notfor-profit
research organization devoted to improving
public health and the environment, has
determined that the produce that consistently
has the highest pesticide levels include: apples,
bell peppers, celery, cherries, grapes (imported),
nectarines, peaches, pears, potatoes, red
raspberries, strawberries, and spinach. Choosing
organic for this group of produce will give
you and your family the greatest reduction in
pesticide exposure. Spinach, strawberries, and
celery are the worst of the bunch.
Organic foods may or may not be more
nutritious than their conventional counterparts.
Some scientific studies show conventional foods
are just as nutritious, while others support the contrary.
Based on my knowledge of the available
data, the scale tips slightly in favor of a superior
nutritional profile for organic varieties. Organics
generally have a bit higher mineral content because
of the more stringent soil requirements for
organic certification and in some cases, have
a more robust supply of protective antioxidants.
Organic foods may or may not taste better.
Blinded taste studies are basically a wash. For
those that think organic tastes better there are
an equal number who find the conventional
counterpart tastier.
Organic foods will generally spoil more
quickly.
Pesticides clearly extend the shelf life and “freshness”
of foods. For optimal freshness, organic
foods need to be consumed more quickly.
Organic foods are more expensive.
You will generally pay about 20% more for organic
varieties.
The answer is a complicated one and ultimately
depends on your feelings towards the environment,
pesticide, and your pocketbook.
Whale Watching
Every year, approximately 26,000 gray whales migrate from the frigid
waters of the Arctic region to the warmer waters off of Baja, California.
Their migratory path is over 10,000 miles long and takes them to their
customary breeding grounds. The San Diego coastline is one of their
passing points on this yearly voyage, and a great place to take in this
spectacle.
According to the Birch Aquarium in San Diego, gray whales are most
often seen off the Sand Diego coast from late December through
March. At the peak of the migration, a dozen or more whales can be
seen together at a time. These mammals often dive into deep waters
for three to five minutes and then rise through the surface to “blow.”
It is common to see the whales from the coastline, and two of the
best vantage points are at Cabrillo National Monument or the cliffs of
Torrey Pines State Beach. Another opportunity for whale watching is
aboard one of the whale watching cruises. Many charter boats offer
this service from December through March, and the prices are quite
reasonable, averaging about $30 for a two hour cruise.
Hello! My name is Karrie and I am otherwise
known as The Laundry Lass. I grew up
in the Great Central Valley in a tiny country
town near Fresno. I started working when
I was 15 with my own lawn mowing business
making more money than I could image
at that age. I thought, “This is great!”
Meantime, I expanded it to dog walking,
dog sitting, washing cars, babysitting and
a crafting business called Kreations by Karrie.
I enjoyed working and making my own
money, but time progressed and I grew up.
I started attending the local community
college and progressed to the university
where I obtained a B.A. in Geography with
a History minor. From there I obtained two
teaching credentials and started teaching.
I taught a variety of grades over 17
years and obtained two Masters during the
mean time.
Yet life seems to throw things at you. My
brother and I took care of our ailing mother
after a broken hip in 2002 leading up to
12 years later when she went to heaven in
2014 due to complications from strokes.
I enjoyed reading, attending and volunteering
at church, taking holidays, having
a dog, going to Disneyland, sewing and
crafting, and cooking, but that had all
been put aside during my mother’s illness.
I realized I needed to do something else
with my life. So I changed careers and
made a huge move to Southern California.
I wanted to own a business and work
for myself! I started investigating purchasing
a laundromat by attending the Southern
California Laundry Association’s workshops
and connected with Beverly, who
has become my mentor. That brought me
to the realization that a personalized Fluff n
Fold business was the route for me. I could
work flexible hours according to client’s requests,
work at the church, volunteer, sew,
cook, read, etc. So I opened up a mobile
service in 2015 taking care of clothes from
Long Beach to Mission Viejo, but I was always
looking to expand and when a local
business was up for sale here in Laguna
Beach, I jumped at the chance to own a
brick and mortar shop.
I officially became the new owner of Bay
Cleaners on October 20, 2015, and renaming
it The Laundry Lass--Concierge Dry
Cleaning & Laundry and haven’t looked
back. I provide not only dry cleaning and
laundry (shirt laundry & fluff n’ fold) service
but alterations, hand pressing, shoe/
leather/bag cleaning and repair, area rug
cleaning, including FREE delivery! You
name it, we do it; and, if we can’t do it, I
find someone who can.
Since opening, I have joined the Laguna
Beach Chamber of Commerce and the
Laguna Board of Realtor’s, met a lot of
great people, and am so excited to watch
my business grow as well as my participation
in local community activities.
It may sound weird to some, but I love
opening a neatly folded and organized
linen closet with a beautiful hint of a satisfying
and lovely scent. The Laundry Lass has
arrived! I will give your laundry the love it
deserves!
You may have heard that
everything is energy...
Einstein coined this phrase ages ago,
and those of us who work in the realm of
holistic energy and health know it to be
deeply true. In terms of your nutritional
choices and creating space for optimal
health, selecting those foods and
supplements that support you in your
highest, most fully developed vibration is
key to unfolding your greatest sense of
well-being.
When we are in the optimal state of vitality,
we crave and consume highly nutritious
food and supplements with greater
bio-availability and cellular resonance.
When our mind, body and spirit are in
alignment, we no longer crave junk and
non-food. Crap thoughts attract crap
foods! This is why it’s very important to
begin tuning in to our bodies and our
emotions so that we can make better
choices.
When we open to the awareness that
junk food binges and allowing lowvibration
foods to enter our bodies are
directly correlating to some dis-ease in
the energetic field, pointing to flawed
patterns and habits in our thoughts and
stuck energies in the body.
Using a multi-modal approach to wellness,
healing and growth, Blissful Souls
Wellness concierge works to elevate,
uplift, unshackle and ‘vibe up’ clients in
order that they can attain their highest
potential for feeling great. Our experts
in yoga, alternative medicine, energy
healing, nutrition and non-traditional
medicine work in tandem with clients to
reveal and emerge them as the highest
vibrational being that they can be.
By providing high quality nutrition and
clearing body, mind, spirit at all levels,
we bring our bodies back to a space
in which real hunger can be felt again
and we reach for real foods and good
nutrition rather than the non-food junk so
many of us have gotten into the unfortunate
habit of scarfing when we’re too
stressed, tired and tuned out.
When we ‘ground’ our energy and quiet
the mind, breathe deeply and tune in to
what our real physical, emotional and
spiritual needs are, we cannot help but
thrive. In gifting ourselves with the time
and attention we deserve to become
healthy, every aspect of our lives improve.
We are an amazing energetic
system that needs tapping in and tuning
up sometimes. By supporting this effort
nutritionally and holistically, we can really
live into the highest love, light and creative
force that each of us are – inside
out.
Juicing
What exactly is Juicing,
Anyway?
Juicing is the process of extracting the juice
from fresh fruits and vegetables. A small kitchen
appliance known as a juicer is used to extract
the juice (not the pulp), and these can range
in price from $50 to $500. Fresh juices should
not be confused with smoothies, which are usually
made in a blender, food processor, or highpowered
juicer and include the fibrous pulp of
the fruit and vegetable ingredients.
Types of Juicers:
‘’Fast’’ Juicers
This type of juicer is one of the most common
varieties you’ll find on the market.
A fast juicer (or centrifugal juicer) grinds
your fruits and veggies and then pushes
the extracted juice through a strainer by
spinning at a very high speed. The pulp
is extracted and ejected into a special
compartment, usually near the back of
the juicer. This type of juicer produces
pulp-free juice very quickly, but it also
tends to extract less juice than other
types of juicers. This type of juicer also
generates more heat than other types,
which some experts say could compromise
the nutrients in the produce.
“Slow” Juicers
This juicer produces juice in two steps,
using one or two gears. First, it crushes
the fruits and veggies, and then it presses
out the juice. These types of juicers
take longer to produce juice, and they
tend to be more expensive than most
centrifugal juicers. However, they are
said to extract more nutrients from the
produce. They yield a thick juice with
more pulp, yet still produce some pulp
extract in a separate compartment.
Reasons to Juice:
• Juicing allows your digestive system to rest, so
that energy may go into elimination, recovery
and healing, instead of digestion. During this
time, cells can repair themselves and detoxify.
Freshly pressed juices provide enzymes as
well as vitamins and minerals that are easily
assimilated.
• Juicing will help to break down the vegetables,
making it easier to assimilate, so you will
receive most of the nutrition.
• Juicing allows you to consume more vegetables
than you normally would. Some people
may find eating vegetables difficult, but it can
be easily accomplished with a quick glass of
vegetable juice.
• You can add a wider variety of vegetables in
your diet. Many people eat the same vegetables,
raw or cooked, every day. Foods should
be rotated to prevent developing allergies.
With juicing, you can juice a wide variety of
vegetables that you may not normally enjoy
eating whole.
Basic Green Juice
(16oz Serving Size):
1 Cucumber; 4 Celery Stalks; 2 Apples;
6-8 Leaves Kale; 1/2 Lemon; 1 tbsp Ginger
