The Runner's Mantra 36
2015 was a year of unexpected challenges and exciting
opportunities for the Beirut Marathon Association. I would say
2015 was a year where we sharpened our focus, grew stronger
and saw the real positive effect of the marathon in Lebanon.
The year began with a new addition to our annual events:
the youth race, that was born out of the conviction that if we
truly wanted to grow the community of runners in Lebanon,
then the focus should be on the youth.
In its 3rd edition, the women race was moved to Byblos-
Jbeil in an attempt to diversify BMA races and have participants
experience running in new locations.
The 13th edition of Banque du Liban Beirut Marathon
received the IAAF silver label in 2015. This edition also marked
the last year of partnership with Banque Du Liban. Over the
three-year partnership, the BDL represented by its Governor
Riad Salameh, showed us a great deal of support. It was
overwhelming to see how we started with the support of family
and friends and grew to attract one of the most respected and
solid entities in the nation.
With world record holder Paula Radcliffe joining the BDL
Beirut Marathon as the guest of honor, Marathon week proved
to be one of the most exciting, albeit challenging one we’ve
ever experienced.
With the help of our family of runners, volunteers, NGOS,
supporters, donors, sponsors, partners and friends, we continue
to strive to be the best running events organizer in Lebanon and
the Middle East. We look forward to empowering everyone to
run and be part of the #peacerunners community in Lebanon.
Keep running, and I look forward to a great 2016 filled with
races and community outreach.
Yours in running,
The Beirut Marathon Association
Registration Number 103/SH.R
The Beirut Marathon Association (BMA) is a Lebanese non-governmental non-profit organization,
independent of all political and religious affiliations, registered under the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
BMA was founded in 2002 at the initiative of May El Khalil with a purpose of promoting the running
culture in Lebanon, and with a vision to become the leading running expert organization in the Middle
East. Today, the Beirut Marathon races carry a humanitarian dimension that aims at making a difference
in other people’s lives through sports.
Brand Values
WHAT we stand for:
PROGRESS: We will constantly and
actively seek improvement.
POSITIVITY: Positivity is what we
wake up for in the morning.
PREPAREDNESS: Always come
prepared!
FAIRPLAY: The game is not worth
playing if it is not played fairly.
PEOPLE-DRIVEN:
By the people and for the people.
Core Purpose
WHY we exist:
To MOVE and unite people
through running
At the most primal stage, we are moving
people physically.
But by pushing the level of what we do:
We are actually moving people
emotionally.
And most meaningfully, when we are at
our very best,
We actually move people to make a change.
For us, it’s all about improvement.
It is at the core of our brand DNA: running to improve your health, your time, your position
on the podium, even improving life for others by choosing to run for a cause.
We constantly seek new ways to improve our races, improve lifestyles, and improve society
at large… but, we start by improving ourselves.
That was the thinking behind the strategic staff retreat we did in December, where we spent
two days developing our brand's core values and core purpose.
I wanted this core ideology to come to life through the people that make-up the Beirut
Marathon Association; the staff themselves. KHALIL KHATIB

BMA 2015 RACES
Changing the country by building a culture of peace runners
The Beirut Marathon Association is committed to grow the running culture in Lebanon.
In 2015 it organized 4 race events that included 18 races. Each event had its own identity,
target and set of objectives aligned with BMA’s general scope of work and values.
BMA Races are in line with international standards certified by the IAAF and AIMS.
BankMed Youth Race: March 22 - Dbayeh
First Edition
The first edition of the BankMed Youth
Race was organized in collaboration
with the municipality of Dbayeh.
The concept of holding a race
dedicated to youth was born
out of the “Power of Sports” concept
and the belief that the values of
running should be spread across all
ages to activate a positive change in
our community.
The main goal of the race is to grow
the running culture in Lebanon and
empower the youth through running,
which in turn leads to an inspired
generation of #PEACERUNNERS.
The Half Marathon Race: September 13 - Chouf Coast
The Half Marathon was introduced this year as a training run leading up to the day of the Beirut Marathon.
Unfortunately, the night before the race the BMA opted to cancel the much-anticipated event due to an
unforeseen controversial issue. A crisis unit was formed and a full refund was offered to all participants who
registered.
Husbands,
fathers,
brothers, sons,
and friends, all
participated
in support of
women.

How Running Impacted their Lives
Cherine Njeim
I wouldn't call myself an expert at running, although I have run a number
marathons in different cities and countries. Nothing, however, compares to
the Beirut Marathon. When I am there, I feel that I am running for a purpose.
There is a feeling as though I'm running for others. Others that maybe aren't
able, don't know of marathons, or simply feel as though they can't do it. I am
running for Lebanon and for all its problems. The vibe of everyone is so big
and so positive and beautiful. It is a very well organized race!
Jackson Limo
The Kenyan runner won the Banque du Liban Beirut Marathon, with a time
of 2:11:04, beating the course record. “I was expecting to win the race, I
prepared very well for it…I got some land for farming, I built my house and
am thinking of my future. I have my brothers and sisters they are in school
and I still help them with education by paying their tuition fees.
Ralph Abou Malhab
When is Marathon day? Ralph's favorite question, one he keeps repeating
till race day comes. Every year Ralph and his sister Christie join thousands
of other runners on the course of the 10 Km, his medal stays around
his neck for a full week. Marathon day is a day for Ralph to celebrate
togetherness, a day where he and thousands wear the same shirt, stand at
the same start line and receive a medal at the finish line.
Aregu Sisay Abateh
Aregu came to Lebanon in 2011 to work as a domestic helper so she could
help her parents living in Ethiopia. Her employer helped her join a running
club and she went on winning medals and breaking records.
" I never thought I would become a professional runner in Lebanon, I train to
take part in all Beirut Marathon organized races. If there weren't any, I would
never have discovered how fast I can go and how happy I can be on the run".
The 42 Km race was outstanding and every year I participate
I notice real improvements in course management and
support from the crowds... I have no doubt that this race will
continue to shine as a national celebration of hope, unity and
peace. David Silver - BMA Coordinator - USA
I am proud to be mobilizing
youth from the Baalbeck-
Hermel region to participate
in the famous annual event;
the Beirut Marathon. It’s an
event that brings together
participants from all over
Lebanon and the world. This
is part of an ongoing 8 years
cooperation between LOST
and BMA based on common
grounds of peace building and
social coexistence.
Founder, LOST (Lebanese
One of my favorite events to work with during the year is
the Beirut Marathon as the event really shows the pure
essence of the sport. The level of professionalism and passion
shown by the entire BMA team, lead by Mrs. May El Khalil,
is what makes the Beirut Marathon recognized by the IAAF
as one of the best events in the world. The vibrancy of the
city and the beauty of the course are only rivaled by the
majestic background of the Mediterranean Sea and the warm
hospitality of the people of Beirut.
The Lebanese people as
a whole believe in the
importance of what the Beirut
Marathon Association does
to show the true image of
Lebanon; that of spreading
peace, love, and national
values. It is an exceptional
association indeed that does
exceptional work. We are all
This is a team organized in 2009 with
Maxime Chaya as a professional
numerous newcomers to this race,
and the Ambassadors stay in our
team throughout their mandate
in Lebanon. During the year they
support us in our various races,
We Ran Over Obstacles
The 2015 BDL Beirut Marathon was the most challenging
event in Beirut Marathon's history. In the last five weeks
before the race we had to modify the course, and
plan-out a new start and finish line. This was due to
construction where our usual start line was, as well as the
garbage crisis and the demonstrations happening where
our finish line was. This turned out to be a challenge
well worth it, since the modifications in the course were
more suitable for the runners, and the course record was
broken this year.
Overcoming the garbage crisis...
In collaboration with Offre Joie, the fire department,
chemical specialists, and all the municipalities
involved, the Beirut Marathon Association
participated in cleaning the trash around the BDLM
course, ensuring the wellness of its participants.
In the weeks prior to the race, the BMA team and
the above mentioned partners went around either
collecting and cleaning the trash, or coordinating
for treatment of the larger mountains of trash by
spraying specific enzymes to substantially decrease
the odour causing bacteria.

BMA PROGRAMS
The BMA’s activities extend beyond the organization of races, and include the creation
of sustainable programs that improve society, support people, identify potential and
encourage growth.
Adopt A Team
The Change Makers
The Adopt A Team program helps underprivileged
children to participate in the marathon race day; it was
first launched in 2009 and continues to grow.
Adopt A Team program matches corporate and
individual supporters with underprivileged groups from
all corners of Lebanon to offer them the opportunity
to participate on Marathon day by covering all costs
incurred. This includes: registration fees, round trip
transportation, t-shirts, race day breakfast and lunch. A
team is made of 42 students and 3 teachers,
In 2015, 24 teams were adopted giving the opportunity
to 1,082 underprivileged participants to join the run!
In 2011 BMA introduced Memorandums of Understanding
with schools and universities in Lebanon to activate the
role of youth in leading a healthier future.
The 2015 the Change Makers program achieved:
• Collaboration with over 100 educational institutions
• New MOUs with 20 universities and 2 schools
• Participation of 6,986 university students in various
races
• Participation of 20,618 school students in various races
Health & Sports Seminar
Beirut542
An initiative launched in 2014 that links hopeful first
time runners who dream to finish a marathon, with
experienced marathoners. In its second edition, the
Beirut 542 included 5 volunteer trainers and 100
applicants. 65 out of 66 runners crossed the finish line
of the 42 Km race; doubling last year’s numbers. To
support the continuity and success of the program, a
Health & Sports Seminar was organized in August, free
of charge, for the 100 signed up applicants.
Since 2003 the BMA has been organizing an annual
medical conference addressed to both professionals
(physiotherapists, doctors, sports teachers, etc…) and
runners. It is meant to offer the latest information about
physiotherapy, nutrition, injury prevention and other
medical tips related to running. Across the years, the
event evolved to be more runner friendly: specialists
give new and seasoned runners information on how to
prevent injury and how to train safely for their race.
In 2015 the title of the conference was changed to
Health & Sports Seminar, scheduled to take place in
early August of each year. The content of this seminar
has shifted from being addressed to professionals, to
being more focused on runners’ needs, with the help of
professionals.
I knew that if people embraced the values of sports, values
such as fair competition, self-discipline and self-challenge,
team mentality, and a positive mental attitude, then they could
become better people and better citizens. May El Khalil
Green Volunteers
Regional Races
BMA works closely with local organizations to promote
a clean environment and a green lifestyle. Hundreds of
volunteers from these organizations were on the streets
on race day gathering upwards of 200,000 empty water
bottles that were later sent for recycling.
The Beirut Marathon is committed to share its expertise
and owned resources with organizations, charities,
municipalities, and credible entities wishing to organize
running events in their areas and regions. In 2015, BMA
managed to successfully extend logistic and organizational
support to 26 regional races all over the country, further
extending the idea of running for health, for causes, and
for promoting Lebanon through the sport of running.
Move for Good Forum
A BMA initiative with the alliance of ULYP (Unite
Lebanon Youth Project) to further spread the culture of
compassion and running. This program was launched
during the first edition of the Youth Race in March with
a main goal to introduce the concept of philanthropy
through sports to youngsters – promoting peer to peer
in-kind contribution. Special boxes were placed in
several schools and shops. Students were encouraged
to donate their used running shoes to support children
in need.
Move for Good Forum (#M4G2015) is yet another new
initiative by the BMA launched on November 6, two
days before the BDL Beirut Marathon race day, featuring
Lebanese, regional and international speakers.
Move for Good is a storytelling platform that showcases
stories of people who moved, for the sake of their
health, their loved ones, their societies and their
communities. They share their stories for inspiration, for
empowerment, and for resilience.
A CAUSE TO RUN
BMA annually hosts an event that serves as the greatest platform for NGO/NPO
fundraising through discounted registration fees, pledge running, and sponsorship.
Ever since 2009, BMA has helped over a hundred
NGOs/NPOs by contributing a percentage of
the race registration fee to the NGO/NPO one
chooses to run for: building the capacity of
NGO/NPO members by using the platform to raise
additional funds and awareness.
This year, The BDL Beirut Marathon hosted 16,994
runners who chose to make their race more
meaningful by running on behalf of 110 local,
national, and global causes.
NGOs/NPOs use their networks to recruit registrants in
their names.
These runners not only committed to fundraise
for their chosen charities, but also helped in
raising awareness on the significant work done in
the community.
NGO/NPO members maximize their visibility by placing
a group of volunteers on cheering stations, water
stations and/or in the race management team.
and illuminated the crowd with
their sparkling lights. They ran for
Melanie! The newly born association
with the support of 534 runners
garnered $7,000 to create the
runners in 2015 for its cause, an
increase of 225% from 2014 (358
the amount of awareness that the
platform offers to the cause.
We are proud to have the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Beirut
Municipality among our partners in 2015.
Beirut Marathon is a will for peace and a space where all can meet in fraternity. It has transformed
our streets into carnivals filled with all the meanings of humanity in the face of the machines of
darkness and oppression. The Beirut Marathon is similar to Lebanon; fruitful and full of life. I
encourage those responsible for this continuous national Lebanese event to carry on with their
activities armed with faith in life, for humanity is in itself a goal for existence.
H.E. Minister of Youth and Sports, General Abdel Mouttaleb Al Hennawi
The fact that this Marathon
takes place every year, is a
testament that love for life
is stronger than anything
that may happen or try and
sidetrack Beirut away from its
history and its course.
H.E. Judge Ziad Chebib,
Governor of Beirut
Beirut Marathon is a tsunami
that swept Lebanon during
the drought of its unending
political standstill. Mrs. May
El Khalil never understated
the great Marathon effect on
the morale of ALL citizens,
from the age of 7 to the age
of over 80.
Islamic Association of Beirut
A champion is not made when
he succeeds. A champion is
made when you look at the
time spent preparing.”
This illustrates the efforts
behind the success of the Beirut
Marathon Association.
The cooperation between the
LAF and the BMA has been a
fruitful one, and the LAF will
always support BMA as it has
proven that it can overcome
all obstacles with strength and
determination.
Roland Saadé, President of the
Lebanese Athletic Federation (LAF).
Partnership is not only about financial or in-kind contribution
against visibility. It is about seeing different sectors getting on
board together to make a national event happen. It is also about
the various sectors interacting with each other leveraging through
this platform to enhance mutual tangible and intangible benefits.
Defining the BMA Core Ideology & Vision
On December 17 and 18, the Beirut Marathon
Association team took to the mountains for
a corporate retreat at AFDC Ramlieh, Aley.
The purpose of the retreat was to define the
association’s core vision which encompasses the
core value, brand character & attitude as well as
the core purpose.
For two days the team experienced fun and
productive activities that aimed at bringing them
closer together and bringing out the core vision
from each and every member.
The retreat was run by Mynditude who specialize
in personal and organizational growth. They
provided team building outdoor activities as well
as an indoor discussion about how team members
define their roles. The result was a brand core
ideology created by the staff; the people that are
the BMA.
Now the Beirut Marathon Association moves
forward for 2016 with motivation, clarity and a
clear and concise purpose.
Economic Impact Report
An Economic Impact Report of the 2015 Beirut Marathon is being prepared by Strategy and will be published
soon on BMA’s official website. This will portray the total economic impact of the Beirut Marathon on
Lebanese GDP across industries.
BMA expenses are the major source of direct economic impact; however they constitute only a part of
the total direct impact. To capture the full impact, the spending related to the participation of the different
stakeholders in the Marathon has been also accounted for. The report will also take into account the indirect
and induced effects that are attributed to the direct spending.
