country, government officials were not <strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ed to protect the rights or the lives of black<br />
<strong>America</strong>ns, not even those who had risked their lives to protect and defend their country.<br />
On August 31, 1919, <strong>in</strong> Bogalusa, Louisiana, when a black veteran named Lucius Mc-<br />
Carty was accused of attempted assault on a white woman, a mob of 1500 people gathered<br />
and shot him more than 1000 times. The mob dragged his body beh<strong>in</strong>d a car through the<br />
town’s African <strong>America</strong>n neighborhoods and then burned his corpse <strong>in</strong> a bonfire. 96 On December<br />
27, 1919, officers transport<strong>in</strong>g veteran Powell Green to jail <strong>in</strong> Raleigh County, North<br />
Carol<strong>in</strong>a, were overpowered by a mob. Mr. Green had<br />
been accused of shoot<strong>in</strong>g R.M. Brown, the white owner<br />
of a movie theater <strong>in</strong> Frankl<strong>in</strong>ton. The mob tied a rope<br />
around Mr. Green’s neck, dragged him for two miles beh<strong>in</strong>d<br />
an automobile, and then hung him from a p<strong>in</strong>e<br />
sapl<strong>in</strong>g. “[N]early the entire town” fought over scraps of<br />
his cloth<strong>in</strong>g, his watch and cha<strong>in</strong>, and chips from the p<strong>in</strong>e<br />
tree. 97 These public spectacle lynch<strong>in</strong>gs were designed to<br />
terrorize and <strong>in</strong>timidate the entire African <strong>America</strong>n community<br />
by tortur<strong>in</strong>g and mutilat<strong>in</strong>g victims <strong>in</strong> front of<br />
massive crowds, and they succeeded <strong>in</strong> horrify<strong>in</strong>g and<br />
traumatiz<strong>in</strong>g generations of African <strong>America</strong>ns.<br />
