On August 17, 1946, less than two weeks after Mr. Jones was killed, a black veteran<br />

named J.C. Farmer was “merrily laugh<strong>in</strong>g” while wait<strong>in</strong>g for a bus with two friends <strong>in</strong> Wilson,<br />

North Carol<strong>in</strong>a. When a police officer ordered Mr. Farmer <strong>in</strong>to his patrol car, Mr.<br />

Farmer replied that he had done noth<strong>in</strong>g wrong. The policeman struck him on the head,<br />

and <strong>in</strong> the ensu<strong>in</strong>g struggle, the officer’s gun went off, shoot<strong>in</strong>g the white officer through<br />

the hand. With<strong>in</strong> an hour, a lynch mob had formed and Mr. Farmer was dead. 135<br />

African <strong>America</strong>n veterans who asserted<br />

their economic and political rights upon return<strong>in</strong>g<br />

from service were met with especially violent<br />

resistance. Veteran Eugene Bells angered local<br />

whites when he refused to work for the white<br />

farmers <strong>in</strong> Mississippi after return<strong>in</strong>g from World<br />

War II, and <strong>in</strong>stead chose to work on his<br />

African <strong>America</strong>n veterans<br />

who asserted their economic<br />

and political rights faced<br />

extremely violent resistance.<br />

Hilton Lea and several other passengers when a car carry<strong>in</strong>g three white men began to follow<br />

them. When the white men opened fire, Mr. Bells pulled over <strong>in</strong> fear. The men beat<br />

Mr. Lea unconscious and then took Mr. Bells to a swamp, where they beat him severely<br />

enough to crush his skull and then shot him <strong>in</strong> the head. 136<br />
