due to your generous support, last year Communities In Schools of
houston (CIS) touched the lives of 111,285 students, served 31,101
students through walk-in services and provided intensive intervention
services for 7,345 students. our CIS students achieved amazing
outcomes:
98% stayed in school
95% of our seniors graduated
96% improved in academics, attendance and/or behavior
93% were promoted to the next grade
We served students in 121 schools during the 2015-16 school year. We
have been helping children achieve, advance, graduate and see the
path to their goals in life for over 37 years, and we will continue to do
so for many more decades to come with your generous support.
Speaking of your support – a sincere thank you for all that you do for
Communities In Schools of houston. The economy in houston was
challenging in the 2015-16 school year, but your continued support
along with CIS’ financial resilience and discipline allowed us to
continue our much-needed services at the same level as prior years.
CIS is an extremely well-run organization with excellent staff and
leadership, an involved and attuned board, and a network of over 400
partner agencies in our community to help deliver the services our
school children need. Reflective of this, I am proud to say that CIS
achieved Charity navigator’s coveted 4-star rating for demonstrating
strong financial health, accountability and transparency.
Although Communities In Schools of houston is already achieving
amazing results, we continue to innovate ways to spread and improve
our services. As an example, we are very excited about our growth in
the Alief Independent School district, and forecast that in the next
few years we will have a CIS program on eVeRY campus in the district.
This holistic approach – being able to continue our CIS services
seamlessly with a student as they progress from kindergarten through
high school - we believe will yield amazing results, and produce real
superstars!
The CIS model of developing a caring one-on-one relationship with
a student in need and a trained, dedicated CIS student support
specialist along with community volunteers and partners is the key to
our success. our staff is there for our students – always cheering them
on and helping them accomplish their goals. how CIS works is best
told by our students – their real-life stories of overcoming sometimes
overwhelming adversity with a friendly and helping hand from their
CIS project Manager. our students rediscover the excitement of
achieving and a common phrase we hear from them when they get on
that path to success is: “I can achieve anything!” Instilling this “I can
achieve anything” mindset in a student who was on the road to
dropping out and becoming a statistic is priceless – and it is what
Communities In Schools of houston does every day.
I thank you again for all that you do for Communities In Schools of
houston, and it is only through your continued support that we can
deliver life changing services to our houston area students in need.
