The eyes are complex organs. Eye disorders can be complex as well and somewhat startling, ranging
from relatively harmless to rather threatening conditions that may lead to serious complications. Take a
look at the following bizarre eye disorders and find out their causes. You won’t believe “your eyes”!
10. Trachoma
Trachoma is a serious bacterial infection that causes roughening in the inner eyelids. Trachoma can lead
to possible permanent blindness if not treated or in case of multiple infections. The conditions occur
worldwide due to poor hygiene and it can be spread from a person to another.
9. Heterochromia
Heterochromia is a difference in the coloration of the eye. It could be two different colored eyes, two
colors in the same eye or a colored ring around the pupil. Heterochromia is inherited in most cases and
considered benign, whereas sometimes it might be a symptom of another underlying defect.
8. Polycoria
Polycoria is a condition where the eye has more than one functioning and independent pupil in the iris. It
is considered a very rare disorder in which the reason of its occurrence remains unknown. Pseaudo-

polycoria is a more common condition characterized by multiple pupils that is lacking the pupillary
orifices and does not cause any eye problems.
7. Haemolacyria
Crying blood, Haemolacyria, is rather an odd condition that causes a person to produce tears containing
blood. A person with this disorder starts to bleed uncontrollably from their eyes. The causes for this
condition remains unclear to researchers.
6. Cat Eye Syndrome
A cat eye syndrome is a rare chromosomal disorder that is usually evident at birth. It is characterized
and named after its most apparent symptom of a narrow pupil pushed towards the iris. However, not all
cases show this symptom. People suffering from the cat eye syndrome may experience hyperactivity and
mild mental disability along with some effects on other organs.
5. Floaters
Floaters are dark spots or strands floating through one’s visual field. These floaters are seen because of
the shadows casted on the retina by broken apart vitreous in the eye. Floater causes visual problems
which are intensified by exposure to light. They are more severe in old age due to vitreous humour
changes. Floaters are not simply removed with eye drops, vitrectomy is needed for their removal.
4. Aniridia Eye Disorder
Aniridia eye disorder is a condition with complete or partial absence of the iris. In most cases, the
condition affects both eyes. It is caused by mutations of the gene PAX6. These mutations can cause
corneal changes which contributes to vision loss.
3. Pterygium Conjunctiva
Pterygium conjunctiva, or surfer’s eye, is the benign growth of conjunctiva usually in the nasal side of
the sclera. Being exposed to ultra-violet rays such as sunlight is the main cause of this eye disorder, in
addition to low humidity and dust. The predominance of pterygia on the nasal side causes the sun rays
passing through the cornea to refract and focus on the limbic area.
2. Leukocoria Eye disorder
Leukocoria, or white pupil, occurs when the pupil appears white rather than black. The white is an
abnormal light’s reflection from the retina due to a lack of layers of tissues called “Tapetum Lucidum”.
This condition affects different animals.
1. Hairy Eyeball
An extremely rare but real condition, the hairy eyeball condition, in which hair grows out of one’s eyes.
It is caused by a rare tumor called limbal dermoid which may also cause sweat inside the eyeball. This
mass, as you may tell, causes discomfort and vision problem, yet, it causes no pain and it can be
surgically removed.
