Picking perfect gifts 

begins with 

LISTENING 

There’s a great scene in the recently 

released movie “Me Before You,” in 

which main character Louisa Clark 

waxes poetically about her favorite 

childhood outfit, which included a pair 

of “bumble bee tights.” In the scene, 

shes asks a character named Will 

Traynor if he has ever loved something 

so much. 

Right there, a great gift idea is born. 

Later, it comes as no surprise when 

Will gives Louisa a pair of yellow and 

black striped tights for her birthday. 

Here’s the take-away: Great gifts start 

with great listening skills. 

Even gift recipients who claim, “I need 

nothing” want something. But figuring 

out just what to give that hard-to-shopfor 

friend, relative or co-worker may take 

a bit of detective work. Start by asking a 

few questions, both of the gift recipient 

and yourself. 

Have you heard the 

gift recipient talk about 

something he or she 

really loved once and 

would love to have 

again? Louisa lamented that “they don’t 

make them [bumble bee tights] for grown 

women.” When Will finds them, it makes 

them the perfect gift. 

Does the person

you have been listening, 

hobbies can make gift-giving easier. 

Beginners are simple as they likely still 

need and are accumulating tools, such as 

knitting needles, paint brushes, kitchen 

gadgets, etc. Asking advice of someone 

with experience in that person’s hobby 

of choice is a good place to start. Store 

personnel fit nicely into this category. 

When it comes to experienced hobbyists, 

gift-givers may have to think outside the 

box. But there, too, experienced friends 

or store personnel can help. 

Does your friend always compliment 

you on a certain piece of jewelry, clothing 

or knick-knack? Take the hint and get 

them one of their own.

Classic butter cookies 

Ingredients 

1 ½ cups unsalted butter, softened 

1 ½ cups granulated sugar 

2 large eggs, plus 2 egg yolks 

4 teaspoons vanilla extract* 

4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour 

1 teaspoon salt 

1 teaspoon baking powder 

* For a new twist on this classic cookie, 

two to four teaspoons of lemon, almond 

or peppermint extract can be used in place 

of the vanilla. However, because these 

extracts can be stronger in flavor, it is wise 

to adjust the amount of flavoring according 

to your taste. 

Directions 

To make the dough: 

1. Beat the butter and sugar until light, 

fluffy and pale yellow in appearance. Add 

the eggs and yolks one at a time, beating 

well after each addition. 

2. With the mixer on low, slowly add the 

vanilla extract; mix until combined. Scrape 

down the sides and bottom of the bowl. 

3. In a separate bowl, sift together the 

flour, salt and baking powder. With the 

mixer on low, slowly add to the butter mixture 

and mix until just combined. 

4. Place a large piece of plastic wrap onto 

your work surface and scoop half of the dough 

out onto it. Pull the sides of the plastic up 

and over the dough; flatten

quite like cutout cookies. 

Whether you’re baking cookies for Santa, heralding in Hanukkah or 

welcoming the New Year, this recipe trio offers something for everyone 

– from melt-in-your-mouth buttery goodness to chocolate decadence to 

mellow molasses with just a touch of ginger.

Chocolate cutouts 

Ingredients 

½ cup [1 stick] unsalted butter, cold 

1 tablespoon canola oil 

½ cup granulated sugar 

1 teaspoon vanilla extract 

½ teaspoon kosher salt 

1 large egg 

¼ cup cornstarch 

½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder 

1 ¾ cups all purpose flour 

Directions 

1. Preheat the oven to 375º F. 

2. Cream the butter, oil, sugar, vanilla 

and salt just until the mixture is smooth. 

Do not over beat. 

3. Add egg and mix to incorporate. 

4. Add cornstarch, cocoa powder, flour. 

5. Roll dough between two sheets of 

parchment paper to ¼- inch thickness. 

6. Cut into desired shapes. 

7. Bake on parchment-lined baking sheets 

for 9-12 minutes. The cookies should look 

dry on the surface and be firm around the 

edges, but soft in the middle. 

Old-fashioned molasses 

Ingredients 

½ cup unsalted butter, softened 

½ cup granulated sugar 

½ cup molasses 

1 large egg 

1 ½ teaspoons vinegar 

2 ½ cups all-purpose flour 

1 teaspoon baking soda 

½ teaspoon ground cinnamon 

½ teaspoon ground ginger 

¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg 

Directions 

To make the dough: 

1. Combine butter, sugar, molasses, egg 

and vinegar in bowl. Beat at medium speed, 

scraping bowl often, until creamy. Add all 

remaining ingredients; beat at low speed, 

scraping bowl often, until well mixed. 

2. Divide dough into thirds; wrap in plastic 

food wrap. Refrigerate 2 hours or overnight 

until firm. 

To shape and bake: 

1. Heat oven to 350° F. 

2. Roll out dough onto a work surface 

that is lightly covered with equal mixture 

of flour and sugar; roll one portion at a 

time to ¼-inch thickness. [Keep remaining 

dough refrigerated.] Cut into shapes. 

3. Place 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie 

sheets. Bake 8-10 minutes or until no 

indention remains when touched. Let stand 

1 minute. Cool completely. 

Decorator’s icing 

Ingredients 

1 ¼ cup confectioners’ sugar 

3 ½ teaspoons milk 

2 teaspoons of vanilla or almond extract 

Directions: 

1. Divide icing into small [dessert] bowls 

and tint by adding 1 to 2 drops food color 

to each bowl. 

2. When using multiple colors, allow 

each cookie to dry before layering 

colors. 

3. Allow cookies to dry before stacking 

for storage. 

Do not refrigerate icing, as it will begin 

to harden.

favorites, which are easy to make, look 

great and taste even better. 

Peanut butter blossoms 

Ingredients 

48 Hershey’s Kisses 

½ cup shortening 

¾ cup creamy peanut butter 

⅓ cup granulated sugar 

⅓ cup packed light brown sugar 

1 egg 

2 tablespoons milk 

1 teaspoon vanilla extract 

1 ½ cups all-purpose flour 

1 teaspoon baking soda 

½ teaspoon salt 

⅓ cup additional granulated sugar for 

rolling [optional] 

Directions 

1. Heat oven to 375°F. Remove wrappers 

from chocolates. 

2. Beat shortening and peanut butter in 

large bowl until well blended. Add ⅓ cup 

granulated sugar and brown sugar; beat 

until fluffy. Add egg, milk and vanilla; beat 

well. Stir together flour, baking soda and 

salt; gradually beat into peanut butter mixture. 

3. Shape dough into 1-inch balls. Roll 

in granulated sugar, if desired; place on 

ungreased cookie sheet. 

4. Bake 8-10 minutes or until lightly 

browned. 

5. Remove cookie trays from oven and 

immediately press a chocolate into center 

of each cookie. 

6. Cool cookies completely on a wire 

rack before storing.

Center in Des Peres, 80 West County

Bring a wish list and a hearty appetite 

to Manchester’s annual Breakfast 

with Santa on Dec. 3 at either the 8:30 

a.m. session or the 9:30 a.m. session. In 

conjunction with the American Legion, 

participants are served a yummy breakfast 

of pancakes, sausage, orange juice, 

milk and coffee. Following breakfast, 

children have the opportunity to 

share their Christmas wish lists with 

Santa. Bring a camera for a souvenir 

photo. Tickets for Manchester 

residents are $4 for youth and $5 for 

adults; non-residents ticket prices are $5 

for youth and $6 for adults. Admission 

is free for children under age 1. Tickets 

are required and must be purchased in

The community is invited to the free Town 

& Country Christmas Tree Lighting event 

featuring the lighting of the 40-foot tree on

reindeer, live music, hot chocolate, Christmas 

cookies and more. The tree lights will
