PROGRAMMES The Portal team is a mix of experienced operations analysts and modelling and simulation/synthetic environment engineers. They exploit best practice from Boeing, UK MoD, NATO, US and Australian government programmes in support of UK MoD, Home Office and blue light services, as well as wider BDS customers. The facility delivers a unique capability that enables exploration and understanding of requirements in a real time, dynamic environment, using the latest in advanced modelling, simulation, analysis and experimentation techniques. The Portal is able to compare the effectiveness and survivability of competing systems, to test future scenarios and to assess potential solutions before they are delivered to the front line, enabling better decision making, better prioritisation and coherent planning. Advanced Systems The Advanced Systems team is the hub of Boeing UK’s research and development (R&D). They conduct in-house, company-funded R&D in areas as diverse as data analytics, data visualisation, advanced communications techniques and health and monitoring systems. They also oversee the investment of Boeings significant budget to a number of UK universities, where post graduate research is funded across a broad range of activities. This is conducted both within the universities and across mixed Boeing/university teams, providing an opportunity for technical interns to obtain research experience in a business environment. The team also conducts customer-funded R&D to develop next-generation capabilities for military and security customers. The Advanced Programmes and Advanced Systems teams contribute to Boeing UK’s growing exports. 32 33
environment incorporating high fidelity synthetic and virtual training devices, including training analysis, design, equipment, development, delivery and evaluation functions, as well as in service support requirements. BDUK also supports non-platform based training, with our staff at the Air Battlespace Training Centre at RAF Waddington providing a training delivery service for the MoD’s Distributed Synthetic Air Land Training (DSALT) programme. This flexible and dynamic service focuses on the conduct of contingency training for UK and coalition forces, delivering a synthetic training capability to enhance high levels of inter-operability between air, land and joint forces in combat environments. Training and Government Services (T&GS) Boeing leverages its world-wide training expertise to benefit customers in the UK. T&GS provides a full range of global training capabilities and customer-focused solutions to directly enable mission readiness. Boeing has designed and developed more than 400 synthetic training devices for 24 different aircraft, and delivers fully integrated training solutions. The UK training organisation was established to enhance the delivery of integrated, platform-based military capability to support our customers’ operational requirements. We deliver the whole spectrum of the training cycle, including analysis, design, equipment development, delivery and evaluation functions, as well as in-service support requirements. Our C-17 International Training Centre (ITC) at the FlightSafety International facility in Farnborough, provides both aircrew and maintainer training to a wide range of international operators of the C-17 platform. The ITC offers a modern training The most recent addition to the UK training portfolio is the CH-47 Chinook Digital Automatic Flight Control System (DAFCS) Familiarisation Rig (DFR), a third generation training device that provides comprehensive DAFCS training for RAF technicians and pilots. The DFR features improved cockpit configuration, fully representative flying controls and an enhanced out-of-cockpit view, as well as a new graphical user interface that gives instructors the ability to inject DAFCS faults and failures into the system and allows students to diagnose problems and react to them. T&GS has access to the wealth of training experience, knowledge and systems that Boeing has developed in support of customers worldwide. BDUK builds upon this global experience to ensure that customers receive affordable, agile and sustainable training solutions to meet their requirements for today and for future as yet unknown environments. 34 35
