Each method <strong>of</strong> limited underst<strong>and</strong>ing is at length exhausted. In its<br />
prime each system is a triumphant success: in its decay it is an<br />
obstructive nuisance. <strong>The</strong> transition to new fruitfulness <strong>of</strong><br />
underst<strong>and</strong>ing are achieved by recurrence to the utmost depths <strong>of</strong><br />
intuition for the refreshment <strong>of</strong> imagination . In the end – though there<br />
is no end – what is being achieved, is width <strong>of</strong> view, issuing in greater<br />
opportunities. But opportunity leads upwards or downwards. In unthinking<br />
Nature 'natural selection' is a synonym for 'waste'. Philosophy should<br />
now perform its final service. It should seek the insight, dim though it<br />
be, to escape the wide wreckage <strong>of</strong> a race <strong>of</strong> beings sensitive to values<br />
beyond those <strong>of</strong> mere animal enjoyment.
