Background by Corbin King. “Crack” was the sound of the eggs that smashed the ground as gravity pulled them towards the earth. The teacher gave a thumbs down after seeing the egg smash into bits. There were more and more students coming to drop their egg from 8 meters high. Students only had a limited amount of time to create their designs to save the egg. Eighth grade science students took on the egg drop, trying to make a design with the given materials that will potentially prevent their egg from cracking. Many students failed but only some succeeded. One of the three 8th grade science teachers, Mrs. Fulp who has been doing the egg drop for a while now. “It is a fun exciting way for students to explore Newton’s Laws,” Mrs. Susie Fulp, eighth grade science teacher, said. One of the most important parts of this PBL is getting all the students to have fun with this and work in teams but also learn about the laws, which this does accomplish. Fulp said that “the students like this PBL because they can work in teams, this gives them a challenge, plus all of the kids get to go outside.” She is planning to do this in the years ahead. It is not only teachers that have good things to say about this, students also really like this activity. According to Josh Clark, 8th grade says “I liked this lab because it challenged students to make a structure that defies physics.” Even know that your egg might not survive the drop it is; still a great experience for everybody.
