He is survived by his mother Alice E. Alderson; birth father, Richard Dohrn (Carol) of New Lenox; sister Meggen A. Alderson (David); nephews, Alden, Collin and Alexander Strickland of Springville, Tennessee; girlfriend, Michelle George of Fort Worth; his first love, Linda Alderson; birth paternal grandmother Loraine Dohrn; step and adoptive siblings, Christina Nagle (Jay), Heather Rossi (Frank), Melissa Cullinane (Dan), Tim Alderson (Melody), Woody Alderson (Darla), Chad Alderson(Susan) and Anthony. He was a decorated United States Army Veteran, with service in Bosnia, Afganistan and Korea. He also served in the United States Air Force and Army National Guard. Alderson has lived in Fort Worth for the last 20 years where he worked as an aircraft mechanic. Following his cremation, his remains will be returned to his home place in Tennessee. Doris Ann Klemm Doris Ann Klemm (Schulz), 72, of New Lenox, died Nov. 27. She is survived by her husband Sheldon Klemm; children Suzanne (Scott) Jablonski, and Matthew (Matthew Plecas) Klemm; grandchildren Haley and Cameron Jablonski and siblings Robert Schulz, James Schulz, and Marylou Kaelbearer. Klemm worked for the New Lenox State Bank and the New Lenox Chamber of Commerce when she first moved to New Lenox in 1974. Recently, she served as the church secretary at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Lenox. Family received friends at Trinity Lutheran Church. Internment was private. In lieu of donations, memorials to Trinity Lutheran Church Chancel Guild or charity of your choice would be appreciated. Jacob M. Fanning Jacob M. Fanning, 25, of New Lenox died Nov. 21. He is survived by his parents Kevin and Bonnie Fanning (Kehl); grandmother Carol Gilday; brothers Jason Fanning and Joseph Fanning; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Cache Creek Animal Rescue in New Lenox is encouraging people to consider adoption instead of buying a pet this year. Animals come to the shelter from animal control, owner surrenders and other shelters. Some have come to the shelter from far-away places like St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands. While some pets end up at the shelter because of abuse or neglect, Denise Lasater, who has been volunteering at the shelter for a year and a half, said many times families give up their pets because of their behavior. When puppies become full-sized and haven’t had proper training, many people don’t know how to handle them and give them away, she said. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, every year about 7.6 million animals enter shelters and only about 2.7 million are adopted. Lasater said adopting a shelter dog is a different experience than buying a dog from a breeder. “There is a bond there that I don’t think you have otherwise,” she said. “There’s so many dogs out there that are excellent dogs that need a home.” While adoption numbers ebb and flow throughout the year, staff and volunteers at Cache Creek are hoping to see an increase in adoptions for the holidays. “Our goal is just to get them out for the holidays,” said Mary Nebor, who started volunteering at the shelter earlier this year. “We just want them to have a home for Cache Creek Animal Rescue 1005 Star Lane, New Lenox Hours 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday- Saturday 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday Volunteer Denise Lasater sits with Henrietta, a two-and-ahalf year old, female hound mix, on a couch at Cache Creek Animal Rescue in New Lenox. Photos by Amanda Stoll/22nd Century Media Pictured is Kohl, a 2-year-old male shepherd/retriever mix, also available for adoption. the holidays.” Volunteering at the shelter is a rewarding experience for Nebor and Lasater, who said volunteering is more than just walking the dogs, although that’s important too. “It’s very much a stress reliever,” Lasater said. “I come in here, I don’t think about anything or anyone but those dogs, and I get some much joy just walking them. And then when they get used to you, they see you and they get so happy. You just get this feeling in your heart that is so warming, and you just want to hold them.” In addition to walking the dogs, volunteers work on training and sometimes just spend time with the animals to help them get used to people and other pets. “A lot of us, when a dog gets adopted, we will cry because we’re so happy, and you know they’re safe,” Lasater said. Lasater said it’s rewarding to see improvement in behavior, especially in dogs with special needs. Many dogs show immense change from the time they come to the shelter to the time they leave. Helping the animals to trust people again is a huge part of that, according to Nebor, who enjoys spending extra time with Harley, a shy 5-year-old cow/retriever mix. “You make them feel like people are safe again,” she said. They said that many times dogs have a completely different temperament once you get them away from the noise and stress of a shelter environment, making it hard to judge a dog’s true personality when they’re barking in a kennel. Nebor said volunteers are always needed at the shelter, and they do volunteer training for anyone interested. For those interested in adopting, there is an application process. Each application is reviewed to make sure a good match is made for both the pet and the pet parent. If there are other pets in the home, a meet and greet is always done to make sure the pets can get along. Adoption costs include spay/neuter, microchip, upto-date shots and flea and heartworm preventatives, as well as a free vet visit to one Ana is a 5-month-old female white domestic short hair available for adoption at Cache Creek Animal Rescue. Lasater and Nebor said while many people may come into the shelter with an idea of which dog or cat they want, they may be surprised by the pet they end up adopting. Many times, it seems, the pet picks the person instead of the other way around.
