SRON Spectrum
Mission facts
> Uncertainty: If the mission is planned far
into the future then it is still often uncertain
whether the mission will go ahead, when
the launch will take place exactly, and which
instruments will be allowed on board.
Missions that are currently flying often have
a far longer mission duration than planned.
The mission duration is often estimated
conservatively to prevent disappointments.
Chandra was planned to do service from
1999 until 2004 but it is still working in
2016.
> Specialism: astronomers distinguish
seve ral types of light and radiation: radio,
infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays,
gamma. Each telescope has its own special -
ism and views the universe through differ ent
eyes.
> International: JAXA is Japanese, RKA is
Russian, ESA is European, NASA is American,
ESO is the European Southern Observatory
in Chile, and EUMETSAT is the European
organization for meteorological satellites.
