In winters past, they have been frequent visitors to the Crane Wildlife Refuge. Join us as we hike the dunes in search of these magnificent birds. Unlike most owls, snowy owls are diurnal—they hunt and are active both day and night – so we have a good chance of sighting one even in the daylight hours! Please note: We will be hiking up and down dunes, through soft sand, for approximately 2½- 3 miles. Suggested ages 13 and older. Pre-registration required. KIDS’ CONSERVATION CINEMA On certain Sunday afternoons through March, the refuge will be screening FREE, child and familyfriendly films that generally feature a wildlife and/or environmental theme. Here is what we have scheduled for the month of December: The Polar Express, Sunday, December 18th @ 1:30 pm - This is the story of a young hero boy on Christmas Eve who boards on a powerful magical train that’s headed to the North Pole and Santa Claus’s home. What unfolds is an adventure which follows a doubting boy, who takes an extraordinary train ride to the North Pole; during this ride, he embarks on a journey of selfdiscovery which shows him that the wonder of life never fades for those who believe. (2004; Rated G; Run Time: 1 hour, 40 mins.) A VERY CHRISTMAS-Y DAY Come join us for some Christmas fun at Trinity Episcopal Church on Sunday, December 18th from 2:00 - 4:00 PM. We will have many crèches (nativity scenes) displayed from all over the world and hot cocoa and Christmas cookies to decorate and eat. There will also be olive wood carvings from Bethlehem for purchase and several raffles. Tickets may be purchased at the door for $5, children under 8 are free. All are welcome! Trinity Episcopal Church, 124 River Road, Topsfield, MA 01983 CHRISTMAS CANDLELIGHT SERVICE AT FIRST RELIGIOUS SOCIETY A Christmas tradition on the North Shore for nearly a century, the First Religious Society, Unitarian Universalist, will present its 91st annual Christmas Candlelight Service on Sunday, December 18 at 7:15 pm. The church is at 26 Pleasant St., Newburyport. Music for the service will include three choirs, organ, flute, violin, cello, and brass quintet, led by music director Dana Maiben and director of youth choirs Kristen Miller, and presided by Reverend Susan Milnor. The program combines rarely heard works and old favorites, including traditional carols as well works by J.S. Bach and some of his German predecessors, such as Praetorius and Schutz. See the historic 1801 meetinghouse with every window lit by candles, and join in the singing of familiar carols. A freewill offering will be taken. All are welcome!
