FRIDAY 16 DECEMBER 2016 THE BUGLE 5 Rotary Anns Tea in the Garden a hit! HANDOVER: Rotary Ann's Jenny Heathcote and Toets McCune hand over the proceeds from the Tea in the Garden event to SPCA chairperson Annette Rademeyer. Looking on is SPCA volunteer worker Leone Schenk SEARING and soring temperatures did little to daunt the Rotary Ann’s “Tea in the Garden” held recently, an initiative to raise funds for the SPCA while also getting members of the community together over a cup of tea, coffee or iced lemonade to see what our local crafters and entrepreneurs have on offer. Indeed, they were not disappointed. Toets McCune opened her gracious home and garden for the event. The front lawn was adorned with large cream umbrellas under which the participants had displayed their wares. There was a wide variety of home-made and other products: Shweshwe shoes from the spinning wheels of our own Da Gama textiles lay in bright array; jewellery glinted in the sun, both colourful and metallic, casual and dressy; handbags, towels, baby wraps, grown up hand towels, custom-made carrier bags in trendy textiles, garden décor, oven gloves, metal work braai accessories, quilts, puzzles, knickknacks – all were on display to tantalize the Christmas shopper and casual browser. And then when the heat overwhelmed, one could escape to the cool interior of the Mc- Cune home and sink into a couch with a cool drink and a thick slice of lemon meringue pie or cheese cake. Also on sale inside were savouries in the form of vegetarian and meat quiches. And on the way home, a packet of fudge or marmalade demanded the last of the purse’s contents. Toets said that she was pleasantly surprised by the turnout. King SPCA chairperson Annette Radeyer thanked the Rotary Anns and convenor, Toets McCune and the KWT Community for the awesome event and the proceeds donated to the SPCA. 'Christmas is our worst time of year when it comes to expenses – we get many more complaints so the vehicles have to be filled up more regularly, our kennels and pound are usually full so we have to buy more food and we use more water because of the heat. 'The funds raised are an absolute Godsend for us and we would like to thank everyone concerned so much for tackling this project in aid of the SPCA,' concluded Rademeyer.
