Kingite criticises King police service for 'shoddy service' after break-in
KINGITE Peter Ferreira has
knocked the King SAPS for
poor service delivery after an
intruder broke into his
premises at Egan Mews at
about 5 20am on Monday.
An intruder got into his home
and was disturbed when
Peter was awoken when he
heard his son shouting that
there is an intruder inside our
house.
'I lept out of bed shouting and
heard someone go through
the window in the twins
bedroom and jump from the
1st floor balcony of our
townhouse and run off,' said
Peter.
Subsequent investigations
showed that the intruder had
climbed onto the boundary
wall and then scaled onto the
1st floor balcony.
'The window in the
unoccupied twins bedroom,
had been left open for air
circulation and the intruder
managed to force open the
burglar proofing and enter
the bedroom, whereafter,
Kingite criticises King
police service for 'shoddy
service' after break-in
Continued from Pg. 01...
...the intruder entered the
main bedroom where my wife
and I were asleep.
'The brazen individual then
casually strolled around to
my side of the bed and
removed my wallet and
cellular telephone, which lay
on my bedside table without
us hearing anything.
'The intruder then returned to
the spare bedroom and was
going through clothes in the
cupboards when my son
sounded the alarm,' said
Peter.
As the house alarm had not
been tripped (the intruder
clearly new exactly where to
get in), my son pressed the
panic button and within 3-4
minutes the 1st armed
reaction officer was on scene,
the second following literally
a few minutes thereafter.
'The premises was
immediately and expertly
secured and property
belonging to the intruder
including inter alia a cap,
lighter and very large knife
was found lying in the spare
bedroom.
'Our heartfelt thanks to Johan
De Jager and his team from
Risk Management Services
especially to Dawid Deetlefs
the first responding officer for
the prompt and professional
services rendered for which
we are deeply thankful,' said
Peter.
'Then our living hell with the
SAPS commenced.'
Risk Management Services
advised by 5:30am that the
SAPS had been notified of
the location and the break in.
'I tried to contact 10111 from
5.30am until 6.30am and the
number just rang and rang
with no response.
'At 6:30am I telephoned
SAPS KWT directly and was
advised that they were well
aware of the break in and
would get to us soonest.
'By 7am with no response I
again contacted the SAPS
KWT and again at 8am when
I was told that SAPS KWT
only has 2 vehicles and that
one was tied up with a
complaint at the taxi rank and
the second one was dealing
with another break in
complaint so we must just be
patient and wait for them to
get to us,' said Peter.
He said by 8am the SAPS
KWT advised that they have
no control over 'the routing of
the vehicles and that I must
contact SAPS radio control in
East London'
'SAPS King member were
unhelpful, rude and totally
disinterested,' added Peter.
'I contacted East London
police and lodged a
complaint with the head of
radio control to which I do not
expect much feedback.
'The first responding police
officers arrived at 10:30am (5
hours after the incident) and
it was confirmed by them that
SAPS KWT only has two
operational vehicles.' said
Peter.
He concluded: “We are
shocked at the deplorable
services rendered by the
SAPS who should be
ashamed of themselves for
failing a community under
siege by crime.
The Smart Monkeys
A man goes into a pet store looking
for a monkey. "I don't want any old
monkey," he says to the store owner,
"I want one that can do something
special." The store owner points
answers the store owner.
The customer inquires about the next
monkey and is told, "That one costs
$1500, because it knows Visual C++
and Object-Relational technology."
The startled man then asks about the
towards three identical looking third monkey. "That one costs $3000,"
monkeys in politically-correct, answers the store owner.
animal-friendly natural mini-habitats.
The one on the left costs $500," says
the store owner.
"Why so much?" asks the customer.
"Because it can program in C,"
"3000 dollars!!" exclaims the man.
"What can that one do?"
The owner replies, "To be honest, I've
never seen it do a single thing, but it
calls itself a Consultant."

FRIDAY 10 MARCH 2017 THE BUGLE 3
Guest speaker enthralls
guests at KHS birthday
celebrations
GUEST SPEAKER: Siviwe Gwarube kept guests entertained with her
speech at the KHS birthday celebrations last Friday
ON a cool day the Girls in
Blue, Staff, Old Girls and
many other supporters of
KHS gathered on the Rosalind
Slater Field to celebrate
the school’s 142 year birthday.
The Steel Band, and the
choirs opened proceeding to
be followed by hymns and
songs.
The highlight of the ceremony
was an inspirational speech
by Siviwe Gwarube an old girl
who left 10 years ago.
The intervening time has, for
Siviwe, been filled with a
variety of experiences from
which she has garnered
much useful wisdom. Siviwe
began her speech by informing
the audience that she had
been an “average” pupil
(second team hockey), filled
with enthusiasm and always
available to help where needed.
Her post school career started
with an attempt to study
journalism. She hated the
course. She switched to a
study of the law, but because
of financial difficulties, was
unable to complete the whole
course. While in limbo she
applied for and to her surprise
was appointed as Lindiwe
Mazibuko’s spokesperson in
parliament. (Mazibuko was
the first 32 year old Black
woman to lead the opposition
in parliament.)
Siviwe’s speech hinged
around her stated aim; “I
knew I wanted to to inspire,
but not to sell you dreams”
as she spoke specifically to
the Girls in Blue.
She pointed out that South
Africa is at a dangerous
crossroads. Firstly there is a
“massive leadership crisis” in
the country, that is constantly
testing the strength of the
Constitution for its own nefarious
ends. Secondly, there is
the failing economy, with
job-losses rife and education
under severe threat.
Siviwe pointed out that South
Africa needs leaders of
strength and energy and that
KHS has been grooming
young females for 142 years
to take their rightful place in
the corridors of leadership. To
back up her statement Siviwe
pointed out that KHS was
founded when education for
females was not considered
important; this was a progressive
move then. KHS continues
to to be progressive,
producing potential leaders,
well-rounded, well educated
and poised to serve the
nation. The girls were exhorted
to to fulfill this potential
and to ignore or see as a
challenge the crumbling patriarchal
leadership that is
steering the country towards
disaster.
The speech concluded by
encouraging the girls “to be
fearless women who are not
afraid to take up the call of
leadership – turning patriarchy
on its head at every turn.
... We must be seized with
idea of transformation and
diversifying the country at
FRIDAY 10 MARCH 2017 THE BUGLE 5
Two killed in 'love traingle
shooting' in King
A horror scene played out on
the corner of Cambridge road
and Leopold street yesterday
afternoon when a King
William’s Town policeman
allegedly shot his supposed
girlfriend, and her lover before
turning the gun on
himself in a suspected love
triangle slaying.
Both the officer and the man
died on the scene while the
woman was rushed to hospital
in a serious condition. Her
condition could not be established
at the time of going to
press.
Police spokeswoman Captain
Siphokazi Mawisa said
the shooting took place in the
middle of Leopold Street.
Mawisa said it was alleged
the Warrant Officer walked
up to the couple seated in a
vehicle parked in the street
and opened fire. He then
walked back into his car and
shot himself in the head.
“The motive for the shooting
is unknown at this stage and
will form part of the investigation,”
Mawisa said.
She said the officer was
based at the King William’s
Town police station.
According to an eye-witness
the woman and her male
passenger were sitting in car
when she noticed the policeman
approaching them with
a gun and probably realised
what was going to happen .
'S he tried to drive in a hurry
off but bumped another car...
it was then that the man
opened fire... I heard at least
seven shots.
“The man got into his car and
a few seconds another shot
went off... he had put the gun
to his head and shot himself,'
said the eye-witness.
Police and forensic personnel
were on the scene within
minutes. It could not be
established if the policeman
had used his service pistol.
Garlic prawns with lemon pilaf
• 4 tbsp olive oil
• 1 onion, halved and finely
sliced
• 300g long-grain rice
• 550ml water or stock
• 1 tsp salt
• 1 tsp turmeric
• 2 tbsp lemon juice
• 1 tbsp lemon zest
• 3 garlic cloves, finely sliced
• 12 medium prawns, peeled,
deveined with tails left
• 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
• 1 tsp ground coriander
• 1 tsp paprika
• 2 tbsp chopped parsley
• 2 tbsp chopped mint
• 1 lemon, cut into wedges
Method
Heat two tablespoons of oil in
a frypan and cook onion gently
for five minutes. Rinse the
rice under cold running water,
shake dry and add to the
onions, tossing well. Add water,
salt, turmeric, lemon juice
and zest and bring to the boil.
Cover tightly, reduce the heat
to very low and simmer for 15
minutes. Remove from heat
and leave to rest, covered,
while cooking the prawns.
Heat remaining oil in frypan
and cook garlic over medium
heat until it "flutters" in the oil.
Add prawns, cayenne, coriander
and sumac, tossing well
until the prawns are cooked
and the garlic is golden and
nutty. Toss parsley and mint
through rice, top with prawns,
garlic, a final dusting of sumac
and lemon wedges for
squeezing.
6 THE BUGLE FRIDAY 10 MARCH 2017
EC budget- no bold
pronouncements
THE Eastern Cape MEC
for Finance and Provincial
Planning, Sakhumzi
Somyo, introduced the
provincial budget for
2017/18 in the Bhisho
legislature last week.
However, according to the DA
there were no bold
pronouncements to deal with
some of the key issues
impacting on the province.
'This province is desperate
for job creation and
economic growth. How can
this happen when the budget
for the lead department of
Economic Development,
Environmental Affairs and
Tourism’s budget is
decreased by 7%, compared
to the previous year,'
questioned DA MPL Bobby
Stevenson.
'Whereas MEC Sakhumzi
Somyo spoke about
broadband rollout for
government departments, he
said nothing about the crying
need for free wi-fi hotspots
throughout this province,
particularly in all provincial
libraries. This is a definite
game-changer when it
comes to economic growth'.
Stevenson said our
bureaucracy continues to
remain bloated, at 64.6% of
the whole budget with no
positive steps announced to
rationalise the high cost of
public entities which was
alluded to in his previous
budget speech.
'The whole issue of medicolegal
costs is a dark shadow
hanging over this budget with
the province facing 2 000
claims and having to
allocated R17-billion to
contingent liabilities for this.
'Currently, vehicles of the
health department are being
attached because it can't pay
for these claims.
'We welcome the increases of
12% for the Roads
Maintenance Infrastructure
Grant and 12% for the
Human Settlements
Development Grant,' said
Stevenson.
The DA believes that
boosting economic growth
and redirecting resources to
core business along with a
comprehensive expenditure
review will place this
province on the high road to
HORROR SITE: Ten people are believed to have died when this mini-bus
taxi crashed head-on into an oncoming truck
IN one of the worst accident's
in the Border for a long time
at least 10 people were killed
when a minibus taxi collided
head on with a truck on the
R63 between Komga and
Bhisho on Sunday afternoon.
The driver of the taxi and that
of the truck are among those
who died at the scene.
Eastern Cape health spokesman
Sizwe Kupelo said two
male passengers, one from
the minibus taxi and another
from the truck, survived the
accident with injuries and they
were airlifted to Frere Hospital
in East London.
Kupelo said it was too early
to state the gender and age
of those who died.
“Our emergency officials are
on the scene still trying to
access the minibus,” Kupelo
said.
He said the front of the taxi
lodged itself under the front
of the truck and a tow truck
had to be used to seperate
the two vehicles.
The jaws of life were used to
remove the victims from the
wreckage.
A passerby said:' It was a
terrible sight...one would
have believed that a small
aircraft
had
crashed...wreckage was
strewn over a large area.'
According to Eastern Cape
traffic spokesman Charles
Bramwell, the accident occurred
shortly after 3pm.
It is believed the taxi overtook
on a double-barrier line and
was travelling at speed.
He said the taxi with a Cape
Town Taxi Association sticker
on the back was apparantly
en route to Cape Town when
the accident occurred.
It is believed it was carrying
mourners from a funeral.
Police said case of culpable
homicide will be investigated.
The accident occurred at
about 3pm and on hearing
the tragic news Eastern
Cape Health MEC Dr Phumza
Dyantyi rushed to the
scene.
8 THE BUGLE FRIDAY 10 MARCH 2017
POLICE ORGANISE NEW CHAIRS
Police have responded to a
plea from more than 500 high
school pupils from Mbulelo
Benekane Senior Secondary
with a donation of 340 chairs.
The school is in Ramnyiba
village, just outside King
William’s Town.
Two years ago, it was reported
about the severe shortage
of desks at the school, which
led to daily altercations
among pupils as they fought
over chairs.
Pupils sat on each other’s
laps or on paint tins during
class, the mood changed at
the school as police from the
All Saints Detective Academy
arrived with a truckload of
chairs.
Colonel Khanyisa Ndyoko,
from All Saints, said that in
2015 the academy visited
three rural schools around
King William’s Town and after
comparing their situations,
decided to adopt Mbulelo
Benekane.
“After engaging the principal
HAFEEZ
and staff members it was
brought to our attention that
they have multiple challenges,
including a shortage of
chairs for pupils.
“We made a presentation to
Liberty Life in East London
about the shortage, and after
all the formal processes were
followed by both parties, 340
chairs were delivered by the
service provider to All Saints
in January,” said Ndyoko.
Ndyoko said what motivated
the police was the fact that
despite pupils sitting on
three-legged chairs or on
each others’ laps, the school
still managed to achieve
good pass rates.
“Despite this challenge, the
pupils at the school are eager
to learn and that has shown
in their matric pass rate,” said
Ndyoko.
In 2015, the pass rate at this
school was 80% and 77% in
2016.
Maths and English teacher
Monwabisi Zweni described
how much time was wasted
with fights over chairs.
“By the time the scramble is
over, you realise half the lesson
is gone,” said Zweni.
School principal Nombuyekezo
Nogcantsi, who has been
at the school for almost three
decades, said the chairs
would be a great help in improving
the learning and
teaching environment.
“No amount of words can describe
the joy that I feel today.
This means there will
be less fights over seats and
more teaching,” said Nogcantsi
FRIDAY 10 MARCH 2017 THE BUGLE 9
Scifest 2017 to take visitors on a "tour of science"
Two little kids are in hospital
beds next to each other. The first
kid leans over and asks, What
are you in here for? The second
kid says, I m in here to
get my tonsils out and I’m a little
nervous. The first kid says,
You’ve got nothing to worry
about. I had that done when I
was four. They put you to sleep,
and when you wake up they give
you lots of jelly and ice-cream.
It’s a breeze. Cool, says the
second kid. What are you in
here for? A circumcision.
Whoa! exclaims the second
kid. Good luck, mate. I had that
done just after
I was born and I couldn’t walk for
a year.
A little girl was watching her parents
dress for a party in a bar.
When she saw her dad donning
his tuxedo, she warned: "Daddy,
you shouldn't wear that suit.
"And why not, darling?", the father
asked. You know that it always
gives you a headache the
next morning."
The Minister of Science and
Technology, Naledi Pandor,
will officially open Scifest
2017 in Grahamstown on
Friday, 10 March.
Scifest, South Africa's largest
science festival, this year
promises to take visitors on
a journey through the mysteries
of science.
The 2017 theme, "Tour de
Science", is linked to the UN
International Year for Sustainable
Tourism for Development.
Visitors will be taken
on an expedition exploring
the milestones, discoveries
and excitement of various
fields of science.
Celebrating its 21th anniversary,
Scifest will focus on
"edutourism" – travel for the
purpose of learning – in
scientific facilities across Africa.
Prof. Michael Kosch of the
South African National Space
Agency (SANSA), one of
many speakers, will talk on
"Travel through space and
discover the mysteries of
sprites: first recordings of
these dazzling lights in South
Africa."
The festival's main events
include aquatic science activities
at "Water World", and the
chance to "speed-date a
scientist". Following last
year's success, "Science in
the Township" will again be
held at Jozana indoor sports
centre near Grahamstown,
giving local learners easier
access to the festival experience.
Among those expected to
attend are SANSA's newly
appointed CEO, Dr Val Munsamy,
and NASA's retired
astronomer, Dr Jim Adams.
This year's Brian Wilmot
lecture will be delivered by
Hydrogen South Africa's Dr
Henrietta Langmi on how
hydrogen can help to solve
energy problems in the country.
New Kia Sorento offers design and value for money
KIA Motors South Africa has expanded
its Sorento line-up with the introduction
of the new Sorento 2.2 CRDI LS.
The new derivative complements the
range’s previous entry point, the Sorento
2.4 LS, by offering the same award-winning
design, superior ride comfort, and
class-leading quality in a package that
now also excels in power, frugality and
exceptional value for money.
Originally launched at the 2014 Paris
Motor Show, and introduced to South
Africa in July 2015, the latest Sorento
represents a new level for KIA vehicles.
With its smooth, swept-back profile and
multiple award-winning design, the
Sorento spearheaded KIA’s unwavering
drive for quality. In fact, the KIA Sorento
was one of the first KIA models to consistently
rank at the top of its segment for
perceived quality in multiple global markets,
won the people’s vote in the 2015
Middle East Car of the Year competition,
and was also voted a finalist in the 2015
WesBank / SAGMJ Car of the Year competition.
“The Sorento remains a key model for KIA
in South Africa due to our affinity for the
SUV class of vehicles,” says David Sieff,
Marketing Director, KIA Motors South
Africa. “Representing KIA’s next step up
the quality and refinement ladder, it remains
one of our most awarded models
globally thanks to its unique combination
of space, practicality and refinement, all
factors that make owning and driving the
Sorento a pleasure.”
The new Sorento 2.2 CRDi LS model
bolsters the Sorento 2.4 LS model’s
strengths by combining vast practicality
and functionality with the increased power,
performance and fuel efficiency of
KIA’s renowned 2.2-litre turbodiesel engine,
and the convenience of a smooth
shifting 6-speed automatic transmission.
The model is ideal for growing families,
as well as those with active lifestyles
who value fuss-free motoring without
compromising on space or comfort.
KIA’s much-loved 2,2-litre ‘R’ turbodiesel
features the brand’s fourth-generation
CLASSIFIEDS
fuel-injection system for greater fuel
economy, performance and engine response,
while simultaneously reducing
engine noise. An exhaust gas recirculation
cooler promotes recirculation of
clean, cold, low-pressure exhaust gas to
reduce nitrogen oxide emissions and
improve fuel efficiency, while an electronic
swirl control valve in the intake manifold
further reduces emissions by more
carefully controlling the intake of oxygen
to the combustion chamber.
As with all other Sorento models, the
Sorento 2.2 CRDi LS features a fully
independent suspension with MacPherson
struts at the front and KIA’s multi-link
system, with larger bushes and larger
shock absorbers mounted vertically behind
the axle line, at the rear. This suspension
setup, together with the
Sorento’s long wheelbase, ensures a
compliant ride with a more progressive
response to bumps in the road, as well
as improved body control.
Additionally, the Sorento’s driving characteristics
can also be matched to prevailing
driving conditions, thanks to the
Drive Mode Select system, activated via
a switch on the centre console. ‘Normal’
mode is best suited for day-to-day driving,
while ‘Eco’ mode reprograms the
shift points of the automatic transmission
to achieve optimum fuel economy. Finally,
‘Sport’ mode allows the gearbox to
delay shifting and reduces the level of
steering assistance for a sportier feel.
The Sorento 2.2 CRDi LS offers seating
for five passengers, as well as a range of
comfort and convenience features. An
LCD screen, located between two analogue
dials in the centre of the instrument
binnacle, displays all major trip
computer information such as vehicle
range and average and instant fuel consumption
in one place. It also features a
Radio / CD / MP3 player, multimedia
ports for USB and AUX-in connections,
and six speakers around the cabin. Rear
seats feature a 40:20:40 split folding
function, as well as a vast 660-litre cargo
space – big enough for the entire family’s
Obesity linked to Chronic Kidney Disease
Obesity is a potent risk factor
for the development of kidney
disease. It increases the
risk of developing major risk
factors of chronic kidney disease
(CKD) and it has a direct
impact on the
development of end stage
renal disease (ESRD).
Life Renal Dialysis, part of
the Life Healthcare Group,
this World Kidney Day
encourages education about
the harmful consequences of
obesity and its association
with kidney disease, early detection
and a healthy lifestyle
to increase awareness and
prevention of kidney disease.
South Africa has the highest
overweight and obesity rate
in sub-Saharan Africa, with
up to 70% of women and a
third of men being classified
as overweight or obese. Dr
Riyas Fadal, Life Healthcare
Group Clinical Products Manager
says, “Obesity has
become a national epidemic
and it has severe
consequences on your
health, particularly your
kidneys. With healthy food
choices and an increase in
physical activity, you’ll notice
a range of improvements in
your body and this will greatly
benefit your kidneys.”
In individuals affected by obesity,
the kidneys have to work
harder, filtering more blood
than normal (hyperfiltration)
to meet the metabolic demands
of the increased body
weight. The increased strain
can damage the kidney and
raise the risk of developing
CKD in the long-term.
The good news is that reducing
obesity may reverse or
slow CKD progression. Education
and awareness of the
risks of obesity and a healthy
lifestyle, including proper nutrition
and exercise, can dramatically
help in preventing
obesity and kidney disease.
“While we have the privilege
of being able to manage and
treat kidney disease with
state of the art equipment,
we still need to address
prevention and early
detection of kidney disease.
It’s important to have routine
checks with your GPs to ensure
that kidney care is optimized.
We also encourage
not smoking, keeping fit,
watching sugar intake, monitoring
blood pressure, and
eating a healthy and varied
diet,” says Dr Fadal.
Life Renal Dialysis units
Life Renal Dialysis is a
specialised healthcare
service providing acute and
chronic renal dialysis for
patients at 20 renal dialysis
units across South Africa.
These specialised services
assist patients with renal
failure who require outpatient
based chronic renal
dialysis or home based
peritoneal dialysis; or acute
renal dialysis in hospital.
Life Renal Dialysis units offer
state of the art dialysis
machines and equipment
that can perform different
modalities of dialysis and
while this is reassuring for
our patients, our first priority
is to help educate patients
about what they will be going
through and ensure that they
receive the best possible
care at all times.
you the opportunity to show
with your feet where your
heart lies. Choose your
sticker for a cause close to
your heart, spunk up your
tekkies with a funky pair of
our Tekkie Tag shoelaces
and you are ready for
National Tekkie Tax Day!
The campaign started in 2013
when a few of South Africa’s
biggest and most
accountable welfare
organisations joined forces.
Marieta Kemp, Director
Social Services from the
SAVF says “The large
number of welfare
organisations involved helps
us to keep the costs structure
low and this will ensure that
the maximum of donations
can be used by us to deliver
our services on grass roots
level.”
There are 12 National
Beneficiaries and they
represent more
than 1 000
local nonprofit
organis
ations.
Tekkie Tax raised more than
R22 million so far and the
impact on ground level is remarkable.
Kwathando Care
Centre said “We bought a table
tennis set for children with
autism” and Merewent
Cheshire Home said
“We used our Tekkie
Tax donations to
purchase toiletries
for our disabled
residents.”
Freestate Care
in Action bought
bread for poor and hungry
children at school and the
SAVF Middelburg Social
work office were able to
buy groceries for their
needy clients. The list is
long and these are only
a few examples of how
the donations were utilized
in the past.
There is really no excuse
to not participate
in this year’s campaign.
The Stickers (R10 each) and
Tekkie Tag shoelaces (R35)
are available from all Clicks,
Toys R Us and Babies R us
stores. There are also more
than 250 participating nonprofit
organisations selling
these items and together they
aim to convince every South
African to be part of the fun.
Orders can also be placed
online via the Tekkie Tax
website
www.tekkietax.co.za.
Help these welfare
organisations to protect the
vulnerable by wearing your
sticker of choice on Friday,
26 May and spunk up your
tekkies with a pair of funky
Tekkie Tag shoelaces.
14 THE BUGLE FRIDAY 10 MARCH 2017
Weather on the side of King parkrun
LOCAL parkrunners enjoyed a
nice run this past Saturday with
overcast conditions making for
some good running .
' In the pre-run briefing it was
noted that a few runners are
closing in on the magic 50 run
mark,' said King parkrun director
Mike Webb.
' All being well Gordon Smith and
Margaret Foxcroft should both
be celebrating their
50th parkruns on the 18th March
and Kim Williams on the 25th .
'T his is a phenomenal achievement
as we have only had 53
parkruns in king in total. Well
done to all of you.' said Mike.
' Aunty Margaret also mentioned
that she noted that Bruce
Fordyce has now completed his
250th parkrun and she is
working on a four year plan to
match this ….. the Parkrun bug
has truly bitten her solidly,'
added Mike.
COOLERS: BRAC Runners cooling down after last Saturdays King parkrun
A large number of King parkrunners
also took part in the
Kempston Ladies nite race on
Saturday evening.
Kim Williams, Bianca Fismer,
Tracy Farrer, Caitlyn Farrer,
Klara Webb and many other
ladies along with a large contingent
of BRAC runners were
seen at the race .
'The BRAC club from King is fast
creating a name for itself with
their incredible spirit at races
and many of their male runners
dressed up in Drag to take part
with the ladies. Well done guys,'
said Mike.
'They are also very active at our
parkrun and can be seen to do
a cooldown in a large group
often afterwards. Please join
them as this is very good for
your muscles'.
Sizwe Ngqoba, who came 16 th
in last weeks Buffs Marathon
continued his good form, winning
again in a time of 19.15min.
Faizel Kitching came in
3rd place also after a good
marathon run last weekend.
Thando Ndayi and Nangoku
Mahlati set new personal best
times to finish in 6th and 7th.
'First lady home was Tamia
Abdull with Asanda Renene in
2nd and Annamarie Naude in
3rd ….. They all came in one
after the other, clearly a race
within the race.' said Mike .
'Personal best times were also
recorded by all three of them as
well. Congratulations ladies,'
Due to stopwatch problems on
Saturday a few of the timing
results may not be 100%
accurate and we apologize for
this but at least all your runs
were recorded !
Mike said noticeable this past
Saturday was the growing
number of volunteers that is
making life a lot easier for the
organizers and also no one is
getting lost anymore !! .
'One of the runners also requested
that we thank the King Golf
Club for cutting the grass! Many
thanks to Derick Webb and all
at the Golf club for your continued
support .
'Our course is widely toted as
one of the most difficult but most
enjoyable in our region,' concluded
Mike.
THE BRAC RUNNING CLUB
FRIDAY 10 MARCH 2017 THE BUGLE 15
SPORTS SHORTS
...Well, we all know what happened
this last weekend with
the Super Rugby and some
will be happy and others not.
The following phone call will
probably sum up the feelings
of one teams supporters : “ek
het vandag Loftus Versfeld
gebel en n baie vriendlike
vrou het die telefoon ge-antwoord.
Ek vra toe vir die
dame of daar nog plek is vir
Saterdag se Bulls game? “Ja”
se sy ..en watter posisie
speel jy ?
...and, we can take some comfort
with yet another big win
from the Blitzbokke who
seem well on their way to
winning this years
series....and , if you did not
know. They have lost only two
matches this season.
...most of us who use Whatsup
have a picture of ourselves
or wife,
girlfriend,mother, dog i.e
there is a sort of love factor
reflected in the pic....but no,
not for our favourite “garden
gnome” , and, what has he
got?...a motorbike and an old
one at that. We can see what
the follow up photo is going to
look – he is probably grow his
hair to look like Jacques so as
to be “with it” like the other
everyone can check up on
PARTYTIME
The “Traffic light” party on
Friday night was a very successful
one and there will be
more theme type events to
follow – well done, Fursty for
your “robotic” effort.
RITZ BLITZ
...Frid - snacks and snorts
from four.
...Sat/Sun – Super
rugby/Sevens and cricket all
to watch on TV at The Ritz.
...Wed – King Bottle Store
attendance draw and steak
braai.
AND FINALLY
Conditioned response
???...after the big shootout
in Cambridge road, this week,
I asked my mechanic to
change the sound of my car
hooter to sound like gunshots
with the idea of getting
people and other cars to get
out of the way quicker.....if
you'll excuse the pun, the
idea backfired – now people
just ignore me completely ?
The Weatherman
A film crew was on location
deep in the desert. One day
an Old Indian went up to the
director and said, "Tomorrow
rain."
The next day it rained. A
week later, the Indian went
up to the director and said,
"Tomorrow storm." The next
day there was a hailstorm.
"This Indian is incredible,"
said the director. He told his
secretary to hire the Indian to
predict the weather. However,
after several successful
predictions, the old Indian
didn't show up for two weeks.
Finally the director sent for
him. "I have to shoot a big
scene tomorrow," said the
director, "and I'm depending
on you. What will the weather
be like?"
The Indian shrugged his
shoulders. "Don't know," he
said. "Radio is broken."
SPORTS BEAT
Ice Box unbeaten at
Sunset tourney
REPRESENTING DALE: The Dale College team who are participating in
the Sunset Bowls tourney
THE Ice Box team continued
to rule the roost following the
third round of the Pick ‘n Paysponsored
Sunset Bowls
played at the King Bowling
Club last Thursday.
The Ice Box team, skipped
by PJ Mauer and the Old
Dalian Union (ODU) side led
by Brandon Phillips, are the
only two unbeaten teams of
the five-week series so far.
Both teams are on 12 points
but with Mauer’s team having
a shot profit of plus 39 and
the ODU a shot profit of 33.
With two more rounds to go
to decide the winner, it could
be a tight finish.
However the dark horses are
the TNT Junior team of Josh
Turner, Ethan Grunewald and
Andrew Lentz as well as the
Klippies team of Bronwyn
Penny, and Chippy and
Rhona Westmann.
TNT are on 10 points plus 18
followed closely by Klippies
on 10 points plus17.
The Kadra team of Edwin
Lwana, Monhexi Zatu and N
Bam have surprised all and
sundry with their good showing
in their first Sunset Bowls
endeavour. They have only
lost three games.
So far the weather has held
for the event and while not
wanting to implement a
commentator’s curse, it’s
been so far so good.
The warm weather has again
seen the bar well attended
while the young kids have
also had a ball both during
and after the bowls.
Unfortunately, this will be the
last time Sandy and Tony
Elliott will convene the event
as they will be leaving King
and moving to their home in
Seavale later this year.
Both have done a superb job
in organising over recent
years and their expertise will
certainly be missed.
