SURVIVE THE RACE FOR CHARITY
If you have ever wanted to
know what it is like to take
part in some of the world’s
best game shows, you can
participate in this year’s Survive
the Race in aid of the
Cancer Association of South
Africa (Cansa) to get a little
taste of it.
The event combines TV
shows Amazing Race,Minute
to Win It,Survivor and Fear
Factor into one exciting charity
race.
Form a team of six people in
a car and dress in crazy outfits.
Each team is given clues to
12 spots around East London,
where they are challenged
with a variety of team-building
activities.
Twelve companies in East
London each host a challenge
at their premises for
which the companies pay
R1000.
Started in 2011, to date, they
have managed to raised
R70000.
Committee chairperson,
Jackie Deysel, said they started
the race because their
close friends and family were
affected with cancer and
therefore decided to raise
funds for Cansa (Cancer Association
of SA).
“To families or friends or if a
company wants a team-building,
this is the most fun event
in East London. There has
never been a negative outcome,
everyone enjoys it,”
she said.
In 2011, they had 13 teams
taking part. Last year they
had 90 teams and this year
they are hoping for 100 teams.
Sponsor coordinator, Donnae
Rheeder, said every
team pays the registration
team directly to Cansa and
they don’t even see the money.
“There will also be goodie
bags for everyone and a T-
Pork Schnitzel
Ingredients
4 pork loin steaks of about 1
cm thick
1 egg beaten
250 ml breadcrumbs, fresh or
toasted
250 ml flour
Salt and pepper
Combination of olive oil and
butter for frying
Mustard and fresh lemon slices
for serving
Method
Place the pork steaks on a flat
surface, get a rolling pin, wine
bottle or anything with enough
weight. Use cling wrap and
place a layer on top of the
meat to protect them and keep
them intact while you hit them
shirt. People should come
and have fun,” she said.
The race takes place on February
25 at Python Park. Registration
is R450 per team.
For more information, call
082-460-2777.
with your rolling pin, flattening
the steaks and making them
even all over.
Now construct your work station.
Season the flour with salt
and pepper and place in a flat
bowl. Place the beaten egg in
another bowl and the breadcrumbs
in a bowl. Start to coat
your steaks by first rolling
them around in the seasoned
flour, then dip them in the egg
and lastly cover the steaks
with breadcrumbs making
sure everything is covered.
Heat a combination of oil and
butter in your pan and fry the
steaks for 2 to 3 minutes turning
often making sure it does
not burn. The steaks are thin
hence they will be done very
quickly.
Remove from the heat and
serve this work of art dish with
mustard, fresh lemons and a
side dish of potato salad.
FRIDAY 3 FEBRUARY 2017 SUBURBAN BUGLE 3
WALTER THE RHINO MADE FROM PLASTIC BAGS
Lilyfontein Grade 6 pupils Hannah
van Kets and Ilke King, both
11, designed the decorative aspects
of Walter the Rhino who
was made from 2 000 plastic
bags in a recycling and art
project by the children of the
Brakfontein eco school.
One thousand plastic bags that
would otherwise be clogging
landfills have been fashioned
into a funky rhino by environmentally
conscious pupils of Lilyfontein
School.
Walter was named by the
school’s Art and Permaculture
Teacher Emma Rankin, the 3D
rhino is another of the school’s
creative art projects that teach
children how to marry recycling
with creativity.
Emma said “We wanted to inspire
children to look at rubbish
in a different way.”
In 2015 the pupils of Lillyfontein
made a striking colourful mural
from 20 000 plastic bottle tops,
which was triumphantly installed
near the school’s entrance.
“For the rhino they collected
about 2 000 bags and because
we gave them a three-week
time period, they could see how
many bags could have been
thrown away in such a short time.
“It is a visual reminder of how
much waste we produce.” the
pupils were encouraged to
source harder-to-find multicoloured
bags by rewarding them
with house points, before the
plywood frame was built by parents
Lynne and Sean Price.
Grade 6 pupils Hannah van
Kets and Ilke King, both 11, won
a design competition and the
colourful bags were arranged
according to their blueprints.
“I wanted to make my design as
special as rhinos are and to
show off the horn,” King said.
Van Kets said her design hinged
on a mixture of cool and hot
colours to enhance Walter’s
frame.
“We made the plastic carnations
by cutting off the tops and bottoms
of the bags, cutting them
into strips, curling them up and
securing them with florist wire,”
Rankin said. “We packed them
In the spirit of limiting waste and
recycling, plastic bag cut-offs
and unused bags have found a
use in the permaculture garden
and art room.
Rankin said she and the children
wanted to focus on protecting
surviving rhinos: “They are
crazy about the environment
and it is part of their outdoor
education and environmental
awareness as an eco-school.”
She said Lilyfontein was chosen
as one of the “Big 5” ecoschools
in the country by the
Wildlife and Environment Society
of South Africa (Wessa) at
the end of last year and had
also been awarded its diamond
status for 10 years as an ecoschool.
Now that Walter is almost done
– he still needs a few floral arrangements
tucked around his
paws – Rankin is looking forward
to the school’s next ambitious
arty recycling project for
this year.
“We are going to build a classroom
out of plastic bottles. We
will ask children to collect plastic
water and cooldrink bottles,
which will be filled with sand
and non biodegradable material.
These will be the bricks.
Then we can use the classroom
for outdoor education.”
HELPING HAND SCHOOLBAG PROJECT
The Helping Hand Schoolbag
project has once again aided
needy pupils in starting their
big Grade 1 adventure.
The project, established 10
years ago in 2007, has since
assisted more than 30000 pupils
in need by providing them
with stationery supplies and
schoolbags
every year.
This year,
4600 schoolbags
with essential
stationery supplies
will be
handed over
to Grade 1 pupils
across the
country.
“Children are
the bank
which we invest
in,” Helping
Hand
Executive Director,
Danie
Brink, said.
“Our interest is in their successful
futures as doctors, teachers
and leaders of our country.
“The project plays a vital role in
the lives of these youngsters
because with such a bag they
can start their schooling on an
equal footing with their peers,”
he said.
Helping Hand, founded in 1949,
has been working to break the
cycle of poverty in South Africa
for more than 60 years.
According to Brink, the foundations
for a successful future
are created early on in a child’s
schooling career.
In the Eastern Cape, 448 bags
were distributed to young pupils
this year, 45 of which were
handed
over to
East London
pupils.
“We come
year after
year and
there is always
a
greater
need,” East
London
Helping
Hand regional
representative,
Marlene
Basson,
said.
“We know
the bags are making a difference
in their lives because we
see the joy on their faces when
they get their own bag.”
CANCER SURVIVOR CHOSEN FOR ELITE GROUP
East Londoner Leonie Harry
has been selected by the
American Cancer Society to
be a Global Relay for Life
Hero of Hope.
Leonie Harry is one of four
South Africans chosen to be
a Global Relay for Life Hero
of Hope
She is one of four South Africans
to be selected to be
Heroes of Hope.
The Global Relay for Life Heroes
of Hope are symbols of
people’s personal victories
over cancer as they encourage,
support and participate
in Relay for Life and the mission
of cancer organisations.
These exemplary cancer survivors
are not only willing to
share stories of their personal
journey with cancer, but
are also willing to become a
voice for cancer organisations
and the work they do in
the fight against cancer.
“These Heroes of Hope’s leadership
and determination
helps grow our survivorship
programmes, as well as Relay
for Life. These heroes
have lobbied governments
and the United Nations for
support, helped make the
word ‘survivor’ a celebration
of life, and created momentum
for local Relay programmes.
They are true
Heroes,” read an excerpt on
the Cansa Relay for Life website.
“Relay for Life welcomes our
heroes to the global network
of Heroes of Hope who are
determined to make a difference
in saving lives by sharing
their story and leading the
way.
“We are grateful for their volunteer
efforts and support of
the Cancer Association of
South Africa. Volunteers like
this make a difference in the
fight in reducing cancer. Volunteers
like these will give
those on their cancer journey
the opportunity to celebrate
more birthdays,” it says.
The Relay for Life is a fun,
overnight team event that
raises awareness about cancer
and raises funds to fight
cancer.
During the relay, teams of 10
to 15 people, be it friends,
families or co-workers, commit
to keeping at least one
team member walking the
Three boys walk through the woods and suddenly hear
cries for help. They follow the sound to the lake and see
Donald Trump drowning. The boys jump into the water
and drag him to shore. Trump asks the boys how he can
repay them. The first boy says, "I want a boat." The
second boy says, "I want a truck." The third boy says, "I
want a nice tombstone." Trump asks, "Why is that?" The
boy says, "Because when my dad finds out I helped save
you, he's going to kill me."
track at all times to show that
cancer never sleeps.
Each team member is encouraged
to raise a target to
support Cansa’s prevention,
education, early detection,
advocacy and patient care
programmes in the region
where the relay is being held.
Breast cancer survivor, Harry,
said she enjoyed bringing
hope to newly-diagnosed patients.
“There is never a day
that passes without me talking
about cancer.
“This is my passion,” she said.
“I always want to tell people
about cancer. I want to bring
hope, [to say] that it is going
to be all right. In December I
CENTRE STRUGGLING AS
MORE CHILDREN BROUGHT IN
UTHIXO Ulungile Ministries
in Stoney Drift is desperately
looking for donations for their
baby centre.
The centre normally cares for
less than 20 babies, however,
this year, it already has 26
babies.
Centre spokesman Joshua
Minter said they would not
be able to take in more than
30 babies.
The babies at the centre
come from different parts of
East London, such as Reeston,
Duncan Village and Stoney
Drift.
UThixo Ulungile Ministries also
runs a free school and an
after- school programme for
children in the area. Three
meals a day are also provided
for the underprivileged
pre-school children, who
mainly live in informal settlements.
They also provide one meal
for the pupils when they
leave school and a soup
kitchen for the community,
five days a week.
“We officially have 26 babies
in our baby centre of love.
This is amazing and we have
the wonderful opportunity to
love each one of these little
ones. This is also a wonderful
opportunity to help partner
with us, as providing for
these wonderful babies will
require everyone’s help,”
Minter wrote in a plea for
assistance on the centre’s
Facebook page.
“There is a lot that we need as
we spend a lot of money on
food because we have to
make sure that we feed them
[the children] healthy food,”
he said.
The pre-school and feeding
scheme are in desperate
need of: mattresses, chairs
and tables, cots, walking
rings, nappies, wet wipes,
baby formula, baby porridge,
water bottles, bottles, face
cloths and baby products.
HARLEY DAVIDSON BIKE WEEK
Africa Bike Week will cruise
into East London on April 27,
bringing about 8000 bikers
with it.
Sponsored by Harley Davidson,
Bike Week is a five-day
motorcycle
extravaganza
that
has taken
place in
Margate
for the past
six years.
This year,
for the first
time, Bike
Week will
be held in
East London.
For
motorcycle
enthusiasts,
it
promises
to be an
event like no other. However,
bike lover or not, be sure to
be blown away by the magnitude
of the event.
“East London will be invaded
by more than 5000 Harleys
and about 3000 other [motor]
bikes. It’s going to be huge!”
event liaison officer, Peter
Bruton, said.
Harley enthusiasts will be
happy to know that more than
5000 Harley Davidson bikes
will cruise into town for the
annual Africa Bike Week to
be held in East London for
the first time this year
During Bike Week, visitors
can expect to indulge in Billy
Nel’s Biking Museum, a motorcycle
race at the East London
Grand Prix Circuit and a
massive bike ride past the
Esplanade to end it all off.
“There will also be free demo
rides, various stalls, live performances
from top South African
artists and much more,”
Africa Bike Week project manager,
Carl Frayne, said.
There will also be an opportunity
for those brave and eager
enough, to learn how to
ride a motorbike. “Through
various riding schools, we
plan to show and teach people
how to ride in a safe and
controlled environment,”
Frayne said.
