My month
in pictures
Welcome to our January issue. Firstly, from all of us at Velvet,
we would like to wish you a happy New Year! Thank you to
everyone who we worked with throughout 2016 and we look
forward to what 2017 has in store for us all.
January welcomes heaps of New Year’s resolutions; most of
which are focused around getting fit and banishing those extra
Christmas pounds. We’ve got some great advice from local
fitness professionals in our health section starting on page 51.
I’ve signed up for a few 10k races and raided the Sweaty Betty
January sale to keep me motivated.
We’ve given you a quick rundown on some of the forecasted
fashion trends for 2017 on page 36 and we’ll be expanding
on these throughout the year. If you’re looking to get fashion
forward in those January sales, S/S 2017 is set to be all about
ruffles, prints, fuchsia pink, tulle, asymmetric hems and mini
bags. Beauty products are also booming at the start of the
New Year, with launches from the likes of Paul Mitchell,
bareMinerals, Guerlain, Kiehl’s, Clarins, Elemis and more on
page 42, and we’ve even got a step by step look from Estée
Lauder from Joseph’s S/S show.
Recently got engaged, or perhaps he’s waiting for Valentine’s
Day? Next month is our exclusive wedding edition where we’ll
be covering everything from local venues and bridal boutiques
to colour schemes, top trends, flowers and more, so keep your
eyes peeled. Happy reading!
hungry for veggie
Amy Heaslip, Research Manager at Good Sense Research,
gives us a quick insight into forecasted food trends for 2017
2017 is here and now that Christmas has
been and gone for another 12 months,
you’re probably feeling like you owe your
body some time to detox after the ultimate
festive overindulgence that we all enjoy so
much. This time of year is well known for an
increase in dieting, gym memberships and
eating regimes with fruit, veg, raw produce
and super foods. But the reality is that
clean eating is becoming more and more
cemented into our everyday lives. With
this consumer change, we’re starting to
see a movement on the food scene that is
bringing vegetables to centre stage.
You’ve all heard of Pret A Manger...
Well, you can now visit Veggie Pret, opened
in late 2016 on Broadwick Street, London
with a view to being a month’s pop-up,
but later confirmed ‘here to stay’ given its
overwhelming success. From foodservice
to retail, we’ve also seen the likes of Tesco
launching their prepared vegetables BBQ
range in a bid to respond to the growing
demand. With this in mind, watch out
for evolving menus in restaurants this
year, not only from the point of view of
vegetarian dishes, but also in terms of menu
segmentation. So go on, welcome your
greens with open arms and enjoy what 2017
has to bring!
Stem + Glory
Situated alongside CAMYOGA’s
brand new Cambridge-based studios,
Stem + Glory is a bustling vegan café
serving delicious plant-based foods
which are ideal for eating in or taking
away. It’s open 7 days a week from
8:30am, meaning there really is no
excuse to fall off the healthy eating
wagon this year! From high protein
power plates, quinoa patties and raw
slaw to granola bars, energy balls and
other sweet delights, we know where
we’ll be heading for guilt-free treats
this year!
fruits and vegetables are in season for January
Kale is at its best this time of the year, so be sure to make the most of
this nutritious leafy green. This superfood is best boiled, but it’s also
great for mixing into your juice or smoothie. It’s a fantastic source of
Vitamin A and C, as well as being high in fibre and bursting with other
health benefits. Be sure to make the most of sprouts too as these will
remain in season until early March. Watch out for purple sprouting
broccoli which will come into season next month... but be quick as it’s
not around for long! Citrus fruits like oranges, lemons and grapefruit
are also popular in January. They too are high in fibre and Vitamin C.
Dates are also at their best and make a wise choice for those with a
sweet tooth who are seeking a mid-morning snack!
Food
Written by Pete Townshend
Since its opening in 2014, the Bengal Fox in Burwell has established itself as a firm local
favourite for the very best Tandoori Indian cuisine and fine wines, all served in modern and
comfortable surroundings
The restaurant is constantly looking to
build on its outstanding reputation and has
recently welcomed new chef, Foysol Miah
to its team. “We pride ourselves on serving
authentic Indian food that is full of flavour,
but low in fat, low in salt and contains zero
colours,” says owner, Bob Taylor. “That’s
why we are extremely happy to welcome
Foysol to the team. His skill in creating
dishes that are powerful on the tastebuds,
but gentle on the waistline, is fantastic
and we can’t wait for our customers to
experience it!” he continues.
This focus on only using the healthiest
recipes is complemented by the use of
only the freshest ingredients. “Where
possible, we’ll only ever use the freshest,
most local produce. This not only ensures
that we achieve the best possible flavour,
but also that we support our local
community,” explains Bob.
After hearing all about it, we couldn’t wait
to taste it, and we were certainly in for a
treat! Foysol had prepared a selection of
dishes so that we could really get an idea of
the range that is on offer.
We began with the Mixed Starter, which
consisted of lamb cutlet, ponir tikka, onion
bhaji and chicken tikka, and is perfect for
sharing.
The ponir tikka was delicately cooked to
ensure that it retained all of its flavour
and resulted in a beautifully soft and light
texture. This lightness continued with the
onion bhaji, but the crispy texture couldn’t
have been more different. Cooked with
minimal oil, the bhajis were delicate and
flavoursome, with none of the grease that
can often be commonplace in a dish of
this type. Moving on to the meat, the lamb
cutlet and chicken tikka were moist and
tender; spiced to perfection, they made a
fantastic introduction to our main courses.
We were served four different main
courses: Ghar Ka Ghoust, Goan Chilli
Chicken, Mixed Grill and Thali. Ghar Ka
Ghoust is slow-cooked lamb shank served
in a spiced sauce and accompanied by rice.
The meat was wonderfully tender and fell
off the bone into the thick, rich sauce,
which offered really interesting aniseed
flavours.
Next, we tried the Mixed Grill which
saw the welcome return of the abovementioned
lamb cutlet and chicken tikka.
The dish also included duck tikka which I’d
never tried before, but I’d certainly have
again! The meat was perfectly cooked and
worked really well with the tikka marinade.
The final element of this main was the
Head over there today for a healthier taste of India.
lamb sheekh kebab, which was full of flavour, tender and, being
grilled, didn’t arrive dripping with oil.
On to the Goan Chilli Chicken, which is chunks of chicken
cooked with peppers, onion, dry red chillies and a touch of
yoghurt. The peppers gave this dish a lively, fresh flavour and the
chillies packed enough of a punch to excite the taste buds, but
did not overpower. A great contrast to the
“We pride
ourselves
on serving
authentic
Indian food
that is full
of flavour.”
spicy richness that we had enjoyed so far.
Finally, we were served the Thali, which
consisted of small taster portions of lamb
bhuna, vegetable danzak, tikka masala,
bombay aloo, and mushroom bhaji, all
served with naan and a side of raita.
This traditional Indian dish is a fantastic
option whether you’re new to Indian
cuisine, like a bit of variety, or are just
plain indecisive! The variety of flavours
and textures all come together to form
a tantalising overall meal, and with a big choice of different
elements, there really is something for everyone.
The dish is served from Sunday to Thursday, but don’t miss out
on Thali Wednesdays, where you can enjoy this amazing dish
for just £12!
Keep your eyes peeled for our line up of must-see films,
up-and-coming musicians and the next big thing...
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Release Date: April 2017
Stars: Karen Gillan, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana
The first Guardians of the Galaxy was a surprise hit for the Marvel
Cinematic Universe, and despite featuring a team without any big
names it charmed cinemagoers with its easy going sense of humour
and diverse soundtrack. Volume 2, to the delight of many promises
more of the same with director James Gunn back at the helm,
although unlike the largely self contained first film, may begin to
foster greater links with the wider Marvel Universe. Perhaps it’s a
bit early to expect a starring role for Tony Stark, but with a cast as
fun and engaging as the likes of Star Lord, Rocket and friends, few
will complain.
Bridget Jones’ Baby
Release Date: 30th January
Stars: Renée Zellweger, Gemma Jones, Jim Broadbent
It has been long enough since the success of Bridget Jones’ Diary,
and its sequel Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, for its winning
formula to appear dated. Original director Sharon Maguire is kept
at the helm, and Colin Firth and Renee Zelwegger both reprise
their roles as Bridget and Mark Darcy, but this third outing for the
starcrossed lovers is too warm, genuine and funny to ever be a drag.
Yes, it is a little predictable, and the plot – involving a pregnancy for
Bridget, and a love triangle between her and potential fathers
Darcy and American entrepreneur Jack Qwant – sometimes
stretches the realms of plausibility, but for all but the most cold
hearted this is a likeable, unsurprising entry into one of Britain’s best
loved film series.
The Flaming Lips
Oczy Mlody
It is a bit of a stretch to
expect any recording
artist to still sound
fresh and interesting
on their 15th studio
album in 20 years.
If anyone can
however, it’s oddball
American rockers
The Flaming Lips,
who, a few brushes
with the mainstream
aside, have remained
refreshingly off-piste
for the duration of
their decade-spanning
career. Lead single The
Castle is a beautifully
understated piece of
dream pop, harking
back to arguably their
most popular release
– Yoshimi Battles
The Pink Robots. It
is great to see The
Flaming Lips can still
produce interesting,
experimental
music that remains
accessible.
Gaslight
Dark secrets lie at the heart of Patrick Hamilton’s
‘superbly gripping psychological thriller’, set in
1880. Obnoxious Jack Manningham (Rupert
Young) torments his susceptible young wife Bella
(Kara Tointon), convincing her she is going insane.
Left alone every evening in their fog-bound
London home with its inexplicably sinking gaslight
and unexplained noises, Bella becomes more
and more under her husband’s influence, until
circumstances change with the arrival of Rough,
outlandish but beneath layers of absurdity is Foot’s sharp eye for satire’ by Time
Out. Paul has appeared on Never Mind the Buzzcocks (BBC 2), Would
Education
A Landmark in Education
Landmark International School
The Old Rectory, 9 Church Lane, Fulbourn
Cambridge, CB21 5EP. Tel: 01223 755100
www.landmarkinternationalschool.co.uk
We visit the newly-opened Landmark International School just outside
Cambridge to find out more about its aims, objectives and approach to education
Landmark International School welcomed
the first of its students in September
2016 with the aim of creating a friendly
community environment in which British
and international children can learn and
develop, while building their independence.
The school delivers an individualised
educational programme for each pupil,
and focuses on developing a child’s selfconfidence
by nurturing their academic
talents and interests.
“When education is delivered in an
engaging way at the right level for the
student, it can change their whole
life, opening up countless dreams and
aspirations and giving them a life-long
interest in learning,” said Mary Greer,
Registrar and Co-Founder. “I think
students need to be happy and relaxed
in their environment. They then need a
passionate and engaging teacher who they
like and admire who makes their lessons
exciting and memorable,” she continued.
And this commitment to providing the
best for pupils certainly shines through in
the school’s operation. It has been set up
as a not-for-profit charitable company
where every penny is invested entirely into
the education of its children. This not only
ensures that pupils enjoy the best possible
schooling, but it also provides stability, as
shares cannot be sold to private companies
or individuals.
Landmark International School is open
to international boys and girls aged 6 to
16 and combines a range of conventional
subjects with a number of foreign
languages. Selection is not governed by
entrance exams, instead pupils are asked
to attend an informal interview.
This is to asses whether the pupil would
thrive on the ethos of the school, and
indeed whether the school can offer the
best for that child.
And the result? A friendly and welcoming,
family-orientated community in which
children can comfortably develop and
realise their potential. “Landmark offers a
truly unique atmosphere and ethos.
The team of staff are completely
committed to ensuring that each child
has the best possible level of pastoral care
and individual attention,” said Ms Greer,
adding, “The high standard of teaching, in
small class sizes, ensures that, not only will
they leave school with the best possible
academic results, they will also have high
self-esteem and the social skills they need
to allow them to be a valuable contributor
to any community.”
The Animal Health Trust celebrates
its 75th anniversary in 2017 with some
exciting fundraising events…
Anniversary
75 Years of The
Animal Health Trust
To find out more about The
Animal Health Trust and any of its
upcoming 2017 events, or how you
can get involved with Ride London,
head to www.aht.org.uk
Many of our readers will already be aware
of all the fantastic work that The Animal
Health Trust carries out. The Trust, based in
Newmarket, exists to enable dogs, cats and
horses around the world to live happier and
healthier lives. Raising funds to fight disease
and injury, the charity’s aim is simple - to
make animals’ lives better.
With small animal and equine referral clinics
to treat beloved pets in need of specialist
care and treatment, all the funds raised go
straight back into developing new diagnostic
tests, treatments and vaccines to help
thousands more animals.
This year The Animal Health Trust will
celebrate its 75th anniversary by continuing
to put on many activities and events to help
raise funds for, and awareness of, its cause.
The charity will once again be entering a
team into the Ride London cycling event
with the hope of submitting its biggest
ever group. If you were inspired by the Rio
Olympics last year and have since taken
up cycling, why not take on a personal
challenge in 2017 and ride the 100-mile
traffic free route to Surrey in aid of The
Animal Health Trust? Currently, the team
consists of two trustees and some of the
charity’s senior staff, including the CEO.
You’ll have dedicated support from the
events team, receive a fundraising pack
and high quality cycling kit, as well as be
invited to join in the group training around
Newmarket and on the Surrey Hills.
Another big fundraising event that is well
worth marking on your calendar is the
Newmarket Charity Race Day on 10th June
at Newmarket Racecourses. A fabulous day
out (we know because our Editor, Gemma
Treby, is a member of the committee), early
bird tickets for this event cost £175 and are
available at the discounted rate until 31st
March. Included is a day at the races, a silent
and main auction, and a three course dinner
with Champagne upon arrival.
Joanne
Lost: 3st 8lbs with
12 weeks of treatment
Weight and body shape issues are very common problems for
many people, but may well have resulted in you feeling as
though you’ve been in a never ending battle with dieting and
exercise. Being overweight may have led you to poor physical
health, low self-esteem or other more serious conditions.
Take control and uncover the
person you always wanted to be
“May 2016 was possibly my lowest (and heaviest) point, I
had just suffered 2 miscarriages within 5 months and had
comfort eaten my way up another stone in weight...
This is in addition to the previous 4 stone I had put on
since getting married (at 10 stone!).
The first consultation was an eye opener... gosh, I was
unhealthy! My cholesterol was through the roof (heart
disease runs in my family) my blood pressure high, over a
third of me was pure fat (36%). This was disheartening but
also empowering. I spoke at length to the doctor who
gave me the tools and information to get through the
next few weeks/months.
Happiness is about feeling healthy for me… the scales
show a number but you cannot measure how amazing this
journey has made me feel. Whatever life throws at me, I
feel equipped to deal with it. I’ve done my best and will
reap the rewards, fertility wise and fitness wise. I have lost
14 inches from my waist. I have lost 4 stone. I have lost
12% body fat, plus my cholesterol and blood pressure are
now in normal range. My body works more efficiently and
burns calories better and faster... I can't wait to see
what my new body can do.”
Capsule
Collection
Hayley, owner of
Saffron Walden’s fashion
boutique, blue, tells us
how and why we should
all be shopping for a
capsule wardrobe
The concept of a capsule wardrobe is nothing new, but here at
blue, we’re all about shopping wisely and thinking about the
versatility of each piece. By investing in a few high-quality,
staple pieces, we encourage our customers to wear each item in
various ways.
By assessing body shape and preferred style, we can then begin to
think about the types of pieces that you would get the most wear
out of.
Essentially, a capsule wardrobe is entirely centred upon being able
to wear one item in multiple ways for multiple occasions. It’s that
feeling of wearing the same outfit twice, but as though you’ve got
a completely new outfit each time. Not only this, but by limiting
your wardrobe, you’ll waste less money on one-off, “I’ll just wear it
once”, pieces and price per wear will definitely decrease...
Take a classic black leather biker jacket for example... It can be
worn with jeans or a cocktail dress for both day and night.
Shopping for a capsule wardrobe doesn’t have to be boring or ‘safe’. I do suggest keeping
things to fairly muted, natural tones however, as this allows you to keep your collection fresh
by adding a splash of colour, depending on the season and current trends. A brightly coloured
accessory is a quick way of keeping your look fresh. My main piece of advice would be to know what
works well for you. From tapered trousers to midi-length skirts or dresses, work with your own style
and preferences. If you’re unsure what it is that suits you, we offer complimentary styling advice
and tailored capsule wardrobe consultations. After all, this is our area of expertise!
Die for Dior
“Dior’s Black Out Mascara would, without a doubt,
be my one desert island product. I absolutely love it!
I have been using it for years and use it on all of my
clients. It gives volume, separation and length to my
lashes. I have tried many mascaras over the years
and could never find one that I was happy with. It
adds instant impact and really makes the colour of
my eyes pop. It’s worth every penny and I just could
not do without it… especially on a desert island.”
Retreat
What better way to beat those January
blues than with a blissful retreat to
The Spa at Bedford Lodge Hotel
So the craziness of Christmas is over and January has arrived
with a bang. After weeks of preparation, late nights and over
indulgence, now is the perfect time to take a step back and have
a bit of ‘me time’. We couldn’t think of anywhere nicer to unwind
than The Spa at Bedford Lodge Hotel.
Renowned for being one of the best in Suffolk, its picturesque
and peaceful location makes a great first impression and sets the
tone nicely for what is to follow. The Spa itself has an abundance
of fine facilities, including hydrotherapy and heat experiences, an
outdoor terrace and mezzanine floor, as well as multiple treatment
rooms offering an extensive list of focused treatments.
It also has a rasul for mud treatments, a relaxation room and
a couple’s treatment suite. From ESPA facials and full body
treatments for women, men, brides and mums-to-be, to other
more targeted beauty treatments such as tanning, hair removal,
and manicures and pedicures, the team here really have got
everything covered.
I had the Winter Warmer package booked, which consists of
access to the full spa facilities all day, lunch in the spa lounge, a
salt and oil scrub or mud rasul session and an ESPA hot stone
massage or personalised facial. After being shown around, I was
robed up and left to unwind until lunch. After a quick dip in the
hydrotherapy pool and a lounge in the sauna, I headed to the Spa
Lounge for lunch. I opted for the fresh Norfolk crab salad with
pickled cucumber ribbons and toasted walnut bread, with a pot of
mint tea. It was refreshing, light and full of flavour.
I resisted the urge for one of their homemade cakes and instead
headed back to the heated beds. After a steam and sauna, I was
then called for my two treatments.
First on the agenda was a salt and oil scrub. After choosing my
preferred scent, I laid on the heated bed.
This skin softening, full body exfoliation
treatment was not something I had tried
before but who wouldn’t be looking
forward to nourished, radiant skin. After
a quick sweep with a warmed, damp mitt
to prep my skin, ESPA’s Invigorating Salt
Scrub was applied in a quick, firm sweeping
movement. The scrub had a menthol and
lime scent which was incredibly fresh
and it not only softened my skin, it also
soothed and hydrated it. The therapist also
applied ESPA’s Fitness Bath and Body
Oil and after 30 minutes I was told to
rinse off in the waterfall shower. I chose
this oil as the therapist said it was great
for aching muscles, and I really liked the
lavender and almond oil scent of it. The
treatment was great at sweeping away
any dead skin cells and revealing a much
smoother complexion. I have had other
mud-based body treatments before, but
never a full scrub like this. Although a full
scrub is often undertaken as a stand-alone
treatment, I was lucky enough to then
indulge in a 60-minute hot stone massage.
Again, I’d had massages before but never a
hot stone one. The treatment used ESPA
oils and warm volcanic stones across my
whole body. The warmth of the stones felt
really soothing especially across my back.
The stones are great for penetrating the
muscles and soothing any aches or pains.
The treatment lasted 60 minutes and I’ve
never felt so relaxed. I would definitely
recommend having the scrub beforehand
as the oils which were then used in my
massage felt as though they were being
absorbed really well. After this, I headed
to the Relaxation Room where the inviting
beds were faintly lit and filled with calming,
tranquil music.
The outdoor hot tub was now surrounded
by subdued lighting as dusk began to creep
in. The air was fresh and the surroundings
were ideal for continuing the overall vibe
of the afternoon. The dressing rooms and
showers were laden with ESPA goodies
which was a nice touch.
If you’re looking for a peaceful afternoon
with professional, relaxing treatments,
delicious food, welcoming staff and an
overall feeling of pure bliss, then definitely
take a look at their varying spa packages. I
cannot wait to head back with my Mum for
a girly day with the Revive Me or Ultimate
Detox package!
Beauty
New Year, New
Skincare Regime
We talk skincare
regimes with Amy Drummond
of Envy Beauty
Skin is made up of 3 layers and is our
largest organ. A good skincare regime not only
makes you feel good but can also slow down or
improve the ageing process (and hopefully a bit
more gracefully!)
If you haven’t already got a set routine,
then now is the perfect time to start!
Here is my skincare regime for healthy skin...
Morning
Step 1:
Upon waking, I wash my face with
MONU’s Delicate Facial Wash and rinse
with cool water. This improves the blood
circulation.
Step 2 & 3:
I then use MONU’s Rosewood Reviving
Mist and 3. MONU’s Brightening Boost
Serum.
Step 4 & 5:
I then apply Dermalogica’s Solar Defence
Booster over MONU’s Moisture Rich
Collagen Cream. Applying a good SPF is
so important, as it prevents sun damage
which in turn ages our skin. Even on a
cloudy day, SPF is crucial as UV rays are
still strong enough to cause damage. My
skin is now clean, hydrated and protected
so make up can be applied.
48
Velvet Magazine | January 2017

Evening
Step 1:
I always double cleanse in the
evening to thoroughly clean my
skin. I start with MONU’s Cleansing
Balm which melts away any make up
or dirt.
Step 2:
I then use MONU’s Delicate Facial
Wash to give my skin a deep clean
and remove any final traces of dirt
or make up.
Step 3:
Next, I spritz my skin with MONU’s
Rosewood Reviving Mist.
Step 4:
I always apply a facial oil or a serum
before my moisturiser as it gives
my skin a real boost. For a glowy,
radiant complexion, I recommend
Renu’s Nourishing Treatment
Oil or MONU’s Brightening Boost
Serum.
Step 5:
I then use MONU’s Collagen
Eye Cream and apply my night
time moisturiser which is usually
MONU’s Night Renewal Complex
or Renu’s Restoring Cream Rich.
Every Day
Always cleanse, tone and moisturise.
Always wear an SPF under your make
up. Always clean your face at night
time as this is when your skin does
most of its work! Drink plenty of water
and eat a nutritious, balanced diet.
Every Week
Be sure to
exfoliate and
use a mask at
least once a
week. Exfoliation
is great at
removing dead
skin cells and
promoting new
cell turnover.
I tend to use
MONU’s Micro
Exfoliant, Renu’s
Radiant Skin Peel
or Renu’s Flash
Relax Mask.
Envy Beauty
Rous Road
Newmarket, CB8 8DL
Tel: 07787817122
Beauty
Every
Month
I would strongly
recommend having a
facial once a month to
give your skin an extra
boost. Professional
products are not
accessible for everyday
use and they’re great for
improving overall skin
health or for targeting
specific skin concerns.
We spoke to Lucy Cronin, Personal Trainer and
owner of 365Motivate to hear her top tips for
kick starting the New Year
Fresh Start
1. I would strongly recommend joining a
club, a group fitness class or recruiting a
gym buddy! Working out with someone
else or in a group is a great way to stay
motivated and ensure you’re consistent
with your training.
2. Ease yourself into a new routine
slowly. Going crazy in January is often
filled with good intentions, but is very
unsustainable and unrealistic. Build up
your workouts gradually.
3. Finally, I would say to choose
activities that you actually enjoy, as
again, you’re much more likely to stay
on track.
Bodyweight Blaster
Anthony Cullen, online trainer and nutrition coach, has
prepared an equipment-free workout you can do at home
Warm Up
4-8 minutes of jogging on the spot or
stair walking.
Work Out
Complete 3 rounds of the following:
Round 1: 60 seconds
Round 2: 45 seconds
Round 3: 30 seconds
• Squats with high kick
• Floor touch with high reach twist
• Hand walk out with push up
• Glute bridge hold
• Mountain climbers
• Seated twists
• Ice skaters
• High knees
• Plank twists
• Shadow boxing
It’s always good to utilise body weight
movements when working out, but if you
were to invest in one piece of equipment, I
would recommend a set of dumbbells. I use
them for the majority of my workouts and
client sessions, as they offer freedom of
movement but add resistance for a tougher
workout. If you’re doing this at home, I would
strongly suggest getting some professional
coaching on technique to avoid injury.
Health
Virtually
POSSIBLE
‘But the class is fully
booked’, is no longer a
feasible excuse, thanks to
Les Mills’ Virtual classes
World-leading Les Mills fitness classes are
now available anytime, thanks to their new
virtual programme. Whatever your fitness
goal, this extensive range of classes has
something for everyone. I went along to
test out these instructor-free sessions.
Having been a member at Abbeycroft
for several years, I’ve battled my way
through most of their fitness timetable,
but had yet to sign on for one of their
virtual classes. I enjoy cardio and weight
and resistance training, so I decided to try
out RPM (or spinning), and BodyPump.
I was a little apprehensive about spinning
without an instructor, as this is usually
the main motivator in keeping me going.
For those of you who aren’t aware, RPM
is essentially 60 (well 55), minutes of
biking with varying levels of speed and
resistance. It definitely leaves you feeling
(and looking!) completely worn out, but
I quite like that about it. That, and the
fact that, on average, each class burns
around 600 calories! The class was as
tough as I had remembered and the time
seemed to fly by. With three instructors all
commentating, it made a change to have
varying teaching styles within each track.
Now I hadn’t done BodyPump for a while
either, and that was far harder than I
recalled! The workout itself is focused on
full body strengthening and toning using
a barbell which you adjust the weight of
depending on the movement. Similarly to
RPM, I really enjoyed the fresh approach
from the instructors, and it felt far more
interactive than an at-home DVD, which
is the vibe I had imagined. I’d kind of
discounted booking on to classes, as it
usually requires a lot of pre-planning and
having to book on 5 or 6 days in advance,
but it’s great to know that these classes
mean the timetable is far more flexible and
accommodating. I will certainly be adding a
few virtual classes into my weekly workouts
this year.
Adam Prescott warns you not to
The beginning of a new year means an abundance of New Year’s
resolutions. Losing weight and getting healthier are in the top 5
most popular each year, closely followed by saving more money. If
2017 is the year you’re looking to get in shape, then we’re here to
help! Let’s take a moment... Surely, if everyone has been making
losing weight their New Year resolution each year, we should be
seeing health resolutions fall further down the list, not still sitting
at the top! The obvious answer to this is that whatever people are
doing isn’t working. Let’s take a look at why...
The problem with dieting and gym routines is that, ‘diets’, in
today’s world have an end and gym routines aren’t what they
should be. How many people do you know who look forward to
going on a diet? How many people do you know, particularly those
who want to lose a substantial amount of weight, look forward to
going to the gym and getting sweaty? I think I know the answer
to both of those questions. If you look forward to your diet or
exercise regime, then well done you’ve cracked it already.
How to diet:
As I said, all ‘diets’ generally have an end. Then, we slowly resort
to eating, drinking and living the way we were before we started
the diet, meaning the weight creeps back on.
The problem isn’t necessarily you, or the diet you were on, it’s a
mixture of things.
1. The diet you were on may not have been sustainable.
2. You may not have educated yourself enough on the topic of
nutrition (something I feel everyone should spend a little bit
of time doing).
3. Your focus may have been on the wrong area.
Naturally, let’s start with number 1. You’ll have heard it a million
times before but I’m going to say it anyway, it’s about changing
your lifestyle for the long-term. Crash diet schemes will have
you on meal replacement shakes or large caloric deficits. You’ll
definitely lose weight, but will they be any good for your longterm
health? I highly doubt it… When looking at starting a new
eating regime, you need to nourish the body to lose weight.
Being overweight or obese isn’t just caused by taking on too
many calories, it’s also because you’re malnourished. You’re
eating lots of processed foods and empty calories without the
wonderful little vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients your body
needs to function. Your new diet shouldn’t be temporary. Fuel
the body, nourish and satisfy yourself when eating, get as many
vegetables into your body as you can and learn new ways to cook
with them. It only takes a quick Google search to find a new meal.
We make sure all of our members, whether they are with us at
the Academy or online, know how to sustain an eating regime to
feel good and look great. This doesn’t mean there won’t be ups
and downs, but our members know exactly how to hop back on
track after a sugary few weeks.
Number 2. Although education is key, it is often overlooked.
Maybe the diet you were on was wrong for you or maybe you
were unaware of how to overcome certain difficulties. Whatever
caused you to struggle losing weight, educating yourself on the
topic could, and would have helped in many ways. This will help
whether you educate yourself on diets themselves, on your body
and how it works or whether you focus on food and develop a
healthier way of cooking.
Contact a local health professional, ask them questions, then ask
them questions on their answers. Go away and research their
answers, don’t just take their word for it. If they know what they
are talking about it won’t bother them if you come back with
more queries, I know I wouldn’t. I get texts and calls every day
from members, but that’s the whole point - I want discussions
and questions as it means people are learning and if people are
learning, their healthy lifestyle is growing a better foundation to
make it last far longer.
Number 3. Focus and keep on going. Firstly, there is a reason
for everything when it comes to your health and weight loss, so
never give up because you haven’t lost weight. There will be a
reason for that, tweak your diet and see what happens. Secondly,
many people feel demoralised when they step on the scales only
seeing 1 or 2 lbs lost.
Again, tweak your diet, speak to a health professional and get
some advice. But so what if you have only lost 1 lb this week, how
do you feel on the whole? Have you got more energy? Are you
sleeping better? If you keep losing 1 lb a week, this time next year
56
Velvet Magazine | January 2017

Health
you’ll be 3 stone lighter! Thirdly, get rid of those scales.
We focus far too much on our weight. Focus on your health,
focus on eating to nourish the body, to feel great, to have more
energy. The wonderful side effect of being healthy is, you lose
weight! The body wants to be lean and strong, it doesn’t want to
feel slow and unhappy. Give your body the tools it needs and it
will do the weight loss job for you, it may not happen overnight,
but it will happen.
Our online programme takes you through a phase by phase
system, showing you that your health leads to satisfyingly
sustained weight loss. Whatever you decide to do in 2017, make
sure your diet is sustainable, ensure you educate yourself along
the way, and throw out the damn scales as health is the key.
Gym routines and
exercising:
Do NOT make exercising a chore
or something you dread. I see
this time and time again; people
in the gym, in an exercise class or
whatever it may be, hating their life,
loathing the environment around
them and not getting anywhere. It
really is this simple, find something
you enjoy doing. Whether that’s
walking, canoeing, rowing, outdoor
bootcamps, or perhaps something
else. Learn to enjoy moving and
have fun with it. If you continue to
torture yourself through gruelling
gym workouts, you won’t enjoy
them. You’ll struggle to put the
same amount of effort into it and
therefore you won’t get the results.
That will lead to frustration and
frustration is a path to the sugary
dark side.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not
saying that if you do this, it will
be easy. There will still be down
days, just like there will be with
your nutrition. We all have them.
However, if you change your
mindset, look at it as enjoying
moving, it no longer seems like a
chore. It will become something
you want to do. This will then hugely
reduce the effort it takes to exercise
regularly, leading to a healthier,
happier, stress-free you.
Fitness
Fitness You Fancy
Kick starting a new fitness regime is never
easy, but if we’re going to give you one
piece of advice, it’s to choose something
you enjoy. From joining a gym,
attending a weekly class or getting a personal
trainer, to sweating it out at an outdoor
bootcamp or taking up a new sport,
we’ve rounded up a few
local options.
The Dance or Yoga Class
The only dance, fitness and aerial arts studio in Suffolk, Studio
Dance & Fitness is ideal for those who are looking to have a little
fun. Its innovative ranges of movement help to keep you fit and
build on strength whilst trying something new. From pole fitness to
aerial hoop and anti-gravity yoga, there’s something for all levels.
www.studiodancefitness.com
The Self Centre in Bury St Edmunds has an extensive timetable
of yoga classes, from hatha and vinyasa to hot yoga, yin yoga, ante
natal and restorative yoga. If you’re new to it, why not sign up to
their 8-week beginner course. It’s great for improving strength,
flexibility and muscle tone, as well as being good for reducing
stress. www.the-self-centre.co.uk
The Outdoor Bootcamp
Now we understand the thought of getting outside in the cold isn’t
hugely appealing, but we promise you it’s fun! Training outside is
great if you’re stuck in an office all day and training in a large group
helps to keep you motivated.
Liberté Fitness runs numerous weekly sessions in Bury St Edmunds
and they’re all entirely focused on improving overall fitness and
having fun! From circuit training to cardiovascular exercises and
team games, this one is great for all ages and fitness levels.
www.libertefitness.com
How about a 45-minute, total-body workout bootcamp session
in a variety of Cambridge park locations which is specifically for
women? Owner, Charlie Wall, takes inspiration from CrossFit
and Tabatta training methods, as well as using equipment like
Kettlebells and more. www.cambridgebootcamps.com
The 1-1 Personal Trainer
If you want results quickly and struggle for motivation,
then booking some sessions with a personal trainer is highly
recommended. Donna Baker is a qualified personal trainer at
Newmarket’s recently opened Asgard Fitness. Be sure to book for
an initial consultation to see how she can get you the results you’re
looking for. Be quick... her diary is already rather busy!
Asgard Fitness, Newmarket
The Hardcore Workout
If you’re still yet to try a CrossFit WOD, then make 2017 the year.
If you’re fairly fit already, this one is great for upping your game
even further. With coach-led classes 7 days a week, these gruelling
workout sessions are certainly something new to get stuck into.
www.crossfita14.co.uk
The Running Club
Joining a running club is a great way of pushing yourself and
keeping you motivated. The Bury St Edmunds Pacers welcome
all ages and abilities and meet on Mondays and Wednesdays for
coach-led sessions. They also partake in other events around the
area which are a great way of testing your fitness even further.
Looking for something to aim for? There’s the Tarpley 20 on
Sunday 26th February and the Stowmarket half marathon on
Sunday 19th March. Still a bit far? How about the St Helens 10km
Trail Run on Sunday 12th March. Head to www.runnersworld.co.uk
Academy for All
Health
From multi-terrain marathons and music festivals, to archery, assault
courses and a leading Karate club, we catch up with the team at the
Suffolk Academy in Barrow
Suffolk Academy is a Community
Interest Company (Social Enterprise)
that focuses on fitness, wellness, and
community activities, located on an
8-acre site in Barrow. Founded by Glen
Moulds in 2005, the Academy started
off as the headquarters for, what is now
one of the longest running Karate clubs
in England, the Kenshinkai Shotokan
Karate Club. Glen is a Black Belt 5th
Dan (Japan) and a former England
fighter and coach.
Over the years Glen has expanded his
vision to include other activities including
the very popular 24-hour, fullyequipped
gym. The site has continued
to grow and change over time, and they
now offer Kendo, Yoga, Pilates, and even
an archery centre.
Suffolk Academy also brings many
annual events to its grounds, all with
the same ethos of providing affordable
and accessible events for all. The
Homegrown Music Festival will be
entering its 5th year this June, and is a
popular music festival that focuses on
showcasing only East Anglian musicians
and vendors. They keep the prices low,
the site clean, and create a familyfriendly
environment for those wanting a
great festival experience but without the
prohibitive costs and lack of safety and
comfort. It’s sponsored by Aspall Cider
and has other sponsors lined up.
Other events on site include Glen’s
baby, The Great Barrow Challenge which
is recognised as one of Europe’s leading
events in Multi Terrain Marathons and
runs 17 marathon events every year.
The highlight of the calendar year is
the prestigious 10 in 10, which brings
runners from around the world to run
10 marathons in 10 days. Using state
of the art tracking and timing systems
to protect the athletes, this event has
attracted the attention of the Red Bull
brand.
In addition to all of this, the Blackbird
Foundation art workshops, the Lowdown
Biker Festival and The Playground
Assault Course also share the site. This
assault course run by brothers, Nick and
Phil Smith has exploded in popularity
among those looking for an active day
out with the family, OCR runners and
fundraisers; it has also been used for
birthday parties, stag and hen do’s, and
corporate events.
The Scissor Box Hair Salon came on
board recently, run by Sarah Moore who
has already built up a large, loyal clientele
in her full-service salon. Glen has also
opened The Vinyl Room Bar & Venue,
which is open every Friday night for
drinks and music. With live music events
performing every month, the space is
also available for exclusive hire.
2017 is already looking to be an exciting
year at the Academy, with its new
Walking Football programme starting
up, aimed at football-loving, over 50s
who are looking for a way to stay fit and
be involved in the sport. There is always
something new and exciting going on,
so be sure to go and take a look for
yourselves.
Fancy Fabrics
I have been dressing windows and making hand-sewn curtains for
many years and have supplied my clients with just about every style
imaginable over that time, depending on their taste and budget.
From a simple roller blind to elaborate swags and tails adorned
with lashings of fringing, ropes and tassels. Although it very much
depends on the period of the property and style of windows as to
how they are dressed, the trend now is for much simpler styling.
Most of us don’t have a mansion to adorn with elaborate drapes, but
dressing your windows with floor length, pleat headed curtains can
give an equally stylish and elegant look. Sometimes simple is best.
Blinds can be attractive and versatile. Shutters aren’t cheap but
are classic and practical. Choices of fabrics are endless and finding
the right one can be overwhelming. You don’t necessarily have to
choose expensive ones. In the past I have created the most fabulous
drapes from humble dust sheets!
Accessorise, Accessorise, Accessorise
Accessorise but don’t over do it. Beautiful cushions, throws and
decorative objects definitely enhance a room, but choose with
care. Clutter is your worst enemy. Look around you and see if you
like the effect of all you survey. If not, remove it and start again.
Organise your cupboards and storage areas so that things that you
use regularly are easy to get to but not on display. Choose a few
favourite pieces and place them where they look their best. You will
enjoy them far better like this than amongst a muddle.
Luxurious Lighting
Good lighting is so important. A mix of light sources at different
levels is necessary for creating appropriate light for certain
purposes and different moods. A pendant light or chandelier in the
centre of a room or over a kitchen work island will give good light,
as do recessed down lights. Whichever room you are in, put them
on dimmer switches and team them with strategically placed table
lamps to give the space a subtle glow when the time is appropriate.
Use these less intrusive lights to form focal points by positioning
them to shine on art objects or reflect in mirrors to create an
illusion of greater space.
Decor Detailing
Colour is everything. Always choose colours that you are
comfortable with. That may sound silly, but we all have our personal
colours which we return to time and time again. If you are brave,
use strong shades on a feature wall or, if not, enhance your neutral
walls and furnishings with splashes of colour by adding jewel colour
cushions, pictures and rugs. Place a beautiful piece of coloured
glass on a table under a lamp and see it blossom.
If you want to make a subtle change to your rooms without too
much fuss and expense, go for a wallpaper. As long as your paint
work is sound, it is a good way to introduce colour or texture and
make your interior come to life.
Style Steals
Interiors
Scandinavian style has captured the minds
of the interior design industry during the
last few seasons, with the trend gaining
momentum particularly in the winter
months. The style’s minimal, clean lines,
simple colour schemes and unpretentious
sophistication has made it a triumphant
success. Glasswells is currently in the
middle of its big seasonal sale and, here
at Velvet, we’ve gone looking for some
Scandi-inspiration amongst its collections.
Along the way, we have come up with
three easy tips to help you create this
sensational style at home.
1
Scandi styling is all about neutral
colours such as grey, white and beige,
mixed with dusky tones and accents of
bright, bold shades, like lemon and lime.
Leave your walls neutral and use your soft
furnishings to add these accents. The zesty
yellow of the Illusion Throw will balance
well when combined with the Sofie Accent
Stool, if your chosen base colours are
white and grey.
2
Light woods such as pine and oak
feature heavily in Scandinavian
interiors. Easily available, paler wood
can be used in the home for both furniture
and flooring, and has even been seen
as cladding on modern, Scandi interior
walls. The Ercol Romana Coffee Table and
Oswold Oak Bookcase are the perfect
choices to complement this trend.
3
Functionality and practicality are
key elements of the Scandinavian
style with minimalism favoured as
opposed to excessive detailing. The simple
aesthetic and classic lines of the Antwerp
Floor Lamp make it ideal as an option for
a living room or bedroom, and the unfussy
time face of the Clifton Clock also fits into
this visual style with a light wooden frame.
Velvet uncovers the models you need to know about, which will be launching in 2017
Bentley Bentayga Diesel
The all new SUV with a 4.0 litre, V8 engine is due to be released
this month. With the classic grill design we all associate with the
Bentley brand, the quiet, yet powerful engine allows for a smooth
drive for those that require a vehicle for both city and country
living. Producing 429bhp (the same peak torque as the
Bentayga’s twin-turbo 6.0 litre petrol W12 model)
and achieving 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds, the
Bentayga Diesel has been built for a luxurious,
yet powerful ride.
Ferrari’s four-seater range,
the Ferrari GTC4 Lusso T, has
been created with a V8 engine
which has a power of 602bhp
and torque of 560lb ft. With the
option of two engines for the first
time from the brand, the dynamic
control systems have also been
upgraded with new settings for
the car’s four-wheel-steering and
Side Slip Control. There’s still little
information known about the car,
but it is said to cost in the region
of £240,000.
From
Reliability
to Racing
Newmarket Motor Company discuss harsh winter conditions, the
reliability of your vehicle and the adrenaline of race tracks this month
Happy New Year to all of our lovely readers
and fellow car enthusiasts! Now that the
rush of Christmas is over, it is time for
new beginnings and possibly even new
cars… Winter used to be a difficult time
for older cars, as damp and cold weather
often caused starting problems. These
days, cars generally cope better with winter
conditions, but it is worthwhile checking a
few things to make sure your car doesn’t
let you down. There are obvious things to
check like the condition of your car battery,
your tyres and your lights, but there are
some less obvious things such as strength of
the coolant in your engine. If you would like
your car to be serviced, please give us a call.
With the weather how it is, now could be
a great time to buy a car. A car that drives
beautifully on a summer’s afternoon, can
turn into something very different when it
gets to winter. Being able to test your car
in adverse conditions, makes buying a car
this time of the year definitely something to
consider.
Although practicality and reliability are key
factors in choosing a car, I know some of
us like to consider the more exhilarating
aspects… Racing circuits all over the
UK hold track days throughout the year
where you can take your own car and test
its limits! Martin, Richard and Mark, of
Newmarket Motor Company, along with
myself, attended a track day in a Mitsubishi
Evolution X RS (360BHP!) and the
undeniable rush of being on a race track is
simply brilliant.
Along with the adrenaline of the speeds
you reach on a track day, there is also a
great atmosphere amongst all types of car
enthusiasts. From old Porsche 911s and
immensely modified Renault Clios to the
BMW i8 and the McLaren 650S, you will
find yourself immersed within the world of
racing in minutes.
We supply all types of cars from high
performance sports cars, to family saloons
so whether you are interested in treating
yourself to a new car or knowing more
about certain track days, feel free to call us
or pop into the showroom for a chat!
