Beverly Johnson joined the 408 notables to receive the Golden Palm 

Award with her star #405 to be placed on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars 

on December 3rd, 2016. This beautiful woman was the first black woman 

to “cover” Vogue Magazine in 1974 and went on to hold that coveted 

spot on 500 fashion magazine covers during her career. “The Face That 

Changed It All” is Beverly’s book that chronicles her life with no holding 

back . . . facing challenges of racism, drug addition, a love affair with 

a famous athlete, a bad marriage, the usual jealousies and hardships 

associated with the fashion world, and her determination to move her 

career into film, TV, writing, and philantropy while holding her family 

together.

summer of 2013 Gale was the guest chef for 2 weeks on A-Rosa’s Rhone River 

Cruise through the south of France. This summer she will sail to Tahiti to take a 

group to a vanilla plantation. She also does Food Innovation with The Hyde Park 

Group in Chicago for large and small food companies.

Returns to the Desert 

Even in a large format magazine like LIVE Magazine it would be a daunting 

task to outline in entirety the achievements of celebrity Chef Gale Gand. She 

is a nationally acclaimed pastry chef, restaurateur,cookbook author, television 

personality, teacher, entrepreneur, and mother. Chef Gand has been recognized 

as Outstanding Pastry Chef of the Year by The James Beard Foundation and by 

Bon Appetit Magazine and has been inducted into the Chicago Chefs Hall of 

Fame. 

In March of 2017 we will have the pleasure of a returning visit when Gale Gand 

kicks off the Palm Desert Food & Wine 2017 festival, presented by Agua 

Caliente Casino Resort Spa from March 24-26, 2017. First, Gale will hold “Pie 

Camp” on Saturday giving us Pie Baking tips. She will demonstrate again on 

Sunday at 1pm (VIP Tent 1). 

For 8 years, Gale hosted the Food Network series “Sweet Dreams,” the first 

nationally televised all-dessert show anywhere. Gale has made appearances 

on “The Martha Stewart Show,” “Oprah,” “The Dr. Oz Show,” “Baking With 

Julia” (Child), “Good Morning America,” “The Rachael Ray Show” and “The 

Today Show.” She competed on “Iron Chef America” and has been featured as a 

celebrity judge on “Food Network Challenge,” “Last Cake Standing,” “Top Chef” 

and “Top Chef Just Desserts.” 

Gale is the founding pastry chef and partner of the beloved Chicago restaurant 

Tru, opened with long-time culinary partner Chef Rick Tramonto and 

restaurateur Rich Melman in 1999. Tru quickly became a sensation among 

Chicago’s fine dining community and has earned ecstatic praise from reviewers, 

receiving accolades from the James Beard Foundation; the Michelin, Mobil 

and AAA guides; Relais Gourmand; Wine Spectator magazine; and was named 

Chicago’s Best Restaurant by Chicago Magazine. Prior to opening Tru, Gand and 

Tramonto earned increasing acclaim at their Chicago area restaurants Trio and 

Brasserie T, and at Stapleford Park, an historic country house hotel near Melton 

Mowbray in Leicestershire, England, where in 1991 Tramonto and Gand became 

the first American chefs to earn a Michelin Red M. 

Gale is a prolific cookbook author with eight titles to her credit, including her 

most recent “Gale Gand’s Lunch!,” released in April 2014. Earlier titles (written 

with Rick Tramonto) include: American Brasserie (1997); Butter Sugar Flour Eggs 

(1999); and Tru: A Cookbook from the Legendary Chicago Restaurant (2004). On 

her own Gand authored Just a Bite (2001); Short and Sweet (2004); Chocolate 

and Vanilla (2006) and Gale Gand’s Brunch (2009), in it’s fifth printing. 

Gale also produces her own artisan root beer, “Gale’s Root Beer,” which is 

available nationally. And each year in the spring months, Gale and her son Gio 

supply local restaurants with wild ramps foraged from wooded areas near their 

suburban Chicago home. 

Gale was the Chef in Residence in 2011 and 2012 at Elawa Farm in Lake Forest, 

Illinois, a beautifully preserved and restored early 20th century “gentleman’s 

farm” that is now home to an organic community garden, an ecological learning 

center, and a meeting space for community activities and private events. Gale 

hosts a series of events and cooking classes in the Elawa farm kitchen. 

In addition, Chef Gand frequently teaches cooking classes at such places as 

Eataly Chicago, Blackberry Farm in Tennessee, King Arthur Flour in Vermont 

and Zingerman’s in Michigan, to name a few. Gale has 2 classes on Craftsy. 

com available, one on Meringues which won an IACP award in 2016, and one 

on Custards. She also does public speaking, cooking demonstrations and book 

signings. Gale also appears frequently at national and international Food and 

Wine festivals such as The Epcot Food and Wine festival at Disney World, The 

Aspen Food and Wine Classic, The World Gourmet Festival in Bangkok, The San 

Diego Food and Wine Festival, Pebble Beach Food and Wine Festival, etc. In the

at the Beijing Olympics. In 2011 Chef Gand was chosen by Mayor Daley to create 

the desserts for Chicago’s welcome dinner for China’s President Hu in 2011. 

Gale participates in many national and local charities. In 2010 and 2011, she was 

a mentor in First Lady Michelle Obama’s Chefs Move to Schools initiative, which 

helps fight childhood obesity through nutritional education. 

Gale holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Rochester Institute of 

Technology, majoring in silver and gold smithing, and attended culinary school 

at La Varenne in Paris. She resides in Riverwoods, Illinois with her husband, 

Jimmy Seidita, son Gio (19), twin daughters Ella and Ruby (11).

Juli Ragsdale: You are known for your great desserts as well as your 

many entrees. What kind of exciting things do you have planned for your 

demonstrations this year? 

Gale Gand: I’m making one of the earlier courses in the meal so I am doing an 

appetizer course. Usually I wait to see what the other dishes are to pick what 

works with them. But I’m thinking Sweet peppers stuffed with shrimp, wrapped 

in bacon. I’ll also be leading Pie Camp where I teach you how to make the 

perfect pie crust, and then doing a talk on vanilla after going to Tahiti this year 

to lead tours at a vanilla plantation through Paul Gauguin Cruises. 

JR: Because your brother Gary and his wife Joan winter in Palm Springs, we 

know you have been coming to the Desert for many years now. Have you 

acquired any favorite venues or activities? 

GG: I always go for a date shake at Shields...I’m actually drinking tea out of a 

mug from there right now! I love the Shrimp and Linguine at trio with a glass 

of chilled rose, And last time I was in town cooking for Desert Trip (Though I 

like to think of it as Dessert Trip!) Gary, Joan, my sous chef Kathy and I went to 

eight4nine for fish tacos and their Ahi Tuna Poke, and there’s an apricot Danish 

at Peninsula Pastries that makes me weak in the knees. 

JR: There is nothing like a night with a bottle of wine and no cork screw to bring 

out the appreciation for the simple things in life. I love tools! Could you name 

your favorite high-tech and low-tech gadget in the kitchen? Any outstanding 

favorites? Low tech would probably be the 

current lemon squeezer, the hinged kind with 

a dome shaped body that has holes in it and 

handles coming from it that you put 1/2 a lemon 

or lime in to press out the juice. 

GG: For high tech probably my hand blender for pureeing thing right in their 

container. Not sure that’s really high tech but I definitely can’t live without it! 

JR: I see that you were a judge this 

month for the 5th annual South Side 

Pie Challenge, a fundraiser for the 

Hyde Park HungerPrograms (Chicago). 

Any stand out pies? 

GG: There was a delicious Mixed Nut Pie with a chocolate ganache layer on 

the top. Very professional looking too. I think we ended up giving that one first 

place out of over 100 pies. When I asked who made it, it was the same woman 

that had won last year. She’s got a gift! 

JR: What are your favorite charities? 

GG: We sponsored the bathrooms at the Architecture and Design Museum in 

Palm Springs. Look for the sign that says “Gand Rest Stop” above the entrance 

(though we call it “The Gand Cans”). I do fund raising through cooking (dessert 

for large multi coursed sit down dinners) and then just give on my own to a 

place called Lydia House. It is a foster home in Chicago for 40 children whose 

home life is just not conducive to thriving, though they have programs to help 

the parents change that with the hopes of the kids returning to the home. We 

sponsored an 8 year old girl this year for Christmas, buying her needs and wants 

from her wish list. It was simple things like she needed a winter coat, boots, hat, 

gloves, scarf, and an Easy Bake Oven! My kinda girl! I have my kids shop with me 

for all her gifts. We are doing a cooking workshop with the kids at the home too. 

There’s also an organization called Selah Freedom which helps end sex 

trafficking and brings freedom to the exploited providing safe houses for them. 

I donate personal items to them to help women restart their lives once they’ve 

been extricated from their captors. They are based in Florida but have safe 

houses in the Midwest. 

JR: Any current private obsessions you are willing to reveal? 

GG: Well, my son Gio is doing his junior year of college abroad at the London 

School of Economics and so London is one of my new obsessions, though I lived 

there in the 90’s for a year. And I’ve started reading. I know that sounds funny 

but up until this year my husband would kid me that I’ve written more books (8) 

than I’ve read. I have dyslexia and so reading is a challenge. But something just 

switched on in my brain this year (I guess you can still learn and grow in your 

60’s!) and I’m enjoying reading! Which is great since I find myself on planes a lot 

for work. I mostly read historic fiction and mostly stories that take place during 

WW2 involving Nazi’s, occupied France and Germany, from the Jewish and non- 

Jewish perspective.

In nature, the snake and mongoose are the 

deadliest of enemies—genetically encoded to 

eternally fight to the death without mercy. Beginning 

in the 1960’s, the nature of that dynamic 

was strategically and expertly applied to the 

historic rivalry between Don Prudhomme and 

Tom McEwen in the most unlikely of venues—a 

“minor” sport struggling for attention on dusty 

drag-racing strips at tracks across the country. 

There, Prudhomme, the Snake, and McEwen, 

the Mongoo$e, did, in fact, compete aggressively 

for dominance in the nascent sport of 

drag racing. Racing aficionados probably know 

that much of the story by now. 

But, what if that rivalry spawned something 

more than victories and defeats? What if it created 

a unique and unlikely friendship out of the 

smoke of battle? What if Snake and Mongoo$e 

were quietly the closest of friends even as 

their rivalry intensified? What if they shared the 

joy and pain of life when they were not busy 

competing? What if their mutual respect, racing 

nerve, thirst for fame and compensation, and 

their desire to advance their thrilling, but extremely 

dangerous, sport brought them together 

as something more than mere rivals? What if 

a perfect storm of conditions transformed their 

competition into something greater—a blood 

kinship that enabled them to team up in order 

to revolutionize an entire industry? 

There is no need to wonder “what if”—that’s 

what really happened while the two real-life 

Southern California drag racing legends were 

setting tracks on fire during those years. But, 

until now, few people outside of the racing community 

knew the true and full story of the Snake 

and the Mongoo$e. That is about to change 

with the long overdue release of the independent 

film, “Snake and Mongoo$e,” from British 

director Wayne Holloway and production partners 

Entertainment Universe, Rhino Films, and 

the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA). The 

film documents the full texture of the real-life 

relationship in all its colorful permutations—the 

rivalry, the races, the fights, the victories, their 

partnership and business success, and their 

tender support for each. 

Before that tragedy struck, they managed to 

put drag racing on the map for the first time, 

and changed motor sports forever, starting with 

the 1970 sponsorship agreement with Mattel’s 

Hot Wheels toys that soon gave birth to the 

corporate sponsorship and licensing model that 

continues to dominate motor sports, and many 

other sports, to this day. But while that was going 

on, the pain of a failed marriage, the tragic 

illness of a child, and the loneliness of the road 

weighed heavily on both men and their families. 

“Snake & Mongoo$e” probes these many 

layers of their enduring relationship on a bigstage 

platform for the first time. 

The film also features archival National Hot 

Rod Association (NHRA) footage and consulting 

and producing expertise from the real-life 

Prudhomme and McEwen. It’s based on the 

journalistic work of writer Alan Paradise, who 

documented the rivalry for years before taking 

on screenwriting chores. 

 

The movie stunningly chronicles a vintage slice 

of American culture as it came to life, while 

simultaneously documenting in compelling and 

dramatic terms one of the deepest and longestlasting 

relationships in the history of sports.

Fleet Easton was crowned “The Prince 

of Palm Springs” by his royal Prince 

Mario Max Schaumburg-Lippe over 

a year ago, and on December 9th of 

2016 it was official when Fleet Easton 

was presented his Star #407 on a 

Palm Springs sidewalk by the Palm 

Springs Walk of Stars. The crowd 

went wild at the royal entrance with 

bagpipes, properly appointed horsedriven 

carriage and all the pomp and 

circumstance fitting for royalty. The 

speakers, Rebecca Ames (advocate for 

Wounded Warriors), Mark A. Ciarlante 

(Tigerman.com, Bully Prevention 

Programs for Schools), Shira Leeder 

(Ms. Wheelchair California 2012), and 

the star recipients, Prince of Palm 

Springs sitting beside Prince Mario 

Max Schaumburg-Lippe made their 

grand and royal entrance curbside in 

front of the soon to be unveiled star.

Fleet Easton 

Fleet Easton’s journey as a singer, 

dancer and actor began at the age 

of 5. His career as a ballet dancer 

took him to the world-renowned 

Juilliard School. His lifetime dream 

of being a singer and actor began 

at the Goodyear Theater and has 

continued to a career on stage, screen 

& television. 

Fleet’s television career blossomed 

while working non-union in 

Florida where he had the privilege 

of appearing in 7 episodes of a 

12-episodes mini-series “From 

Earth To The Moon” filmed at Cape 

Canaveral. Fleet was cast as a reporter 

in the mini-series produced by 

Ron Howard, Tom Hanks and Brian 

Grazer. He was also in a short-run 

television series, “The Cape”, starring 

Corbin Bernsen. Produced by Mary 

Tyler Moore’s production company, 

MTM Enterprises, Fleet was cast as a 

Russian Cosmonaut who was the first 

person to have died in space. This 

series was about the space exploration 

that took place in the 60’s. Fleet 

participated in a national tour of “A 

Christmas Carol” which was produced 

by American Family Theater in 1994. 

“In that show,” Fleet says, “I was cast 

and starred as Tiny Tim”. 

In December 2016 Fleet was in 

“Christmas At The Old Grand Dame”, 

produced/directed by Joyce Bulifant

stars joining the streets of Palm 

Springs.

appearing on the stage at the Indian 

Wells Theater. When the curtain 

went up, Fleet played four different 

characters! He was a delight to the 

audience and fellow cast members. 

Fleet’s performances in Palm Springs 

have focused on raising money for 

charitable organizations and causes 

like anti-bullying campaigns, Kittyland 

Rescue, Make-A-Wish® Foundation, 

March of Dimes, St Jude Children’s 

Research Hospital, Well In The 

Desert, Desert Aids Project, Friends 

of Palm Springs Animal Shelter, Camp 

Heartland (youth infected or affected 

by HIV/AIDS), Loving All Animals, and 

more. 

For his charitable acts of kindness, 

he has received the “People Helping 

People 2012 TOUCHING LIVES Awards” 

(from Touching Lives with Kathy Bee 

Television Show) in Hollywood, the 

“Angel of The Year” award from 

Innerfaith Spiritual Center Worldwide, 

as well as the “Call to Service Award” 

and the “Lifetime Achievement 

Award” both from President Obama. 

While preparing for his Star on the 

Palm Springs Walk of Stars and 

Fleet Easton Day - Prince Mario Max 

Schaumburg-Lippe and the “Prince 

of Palm Springs” discussed their 

collaboration on future projects in 

Palm Springs and Las Vegas which 

would involve filming documentaries, 

stage performances and appearances. 

During the visit of the two Princes, 

they hung out at Colt’s Lodge in Palm 

Springs for some relaxation in “The 

Secret Garden”, a lovely landscaped 

property in the historical Deepwell 

Ranch area. The gardens were inspired 

by the film with child star Margaret 

O’Brien, THE SECRET GARDEN. The 

two talented friends played the grand 

piano in the lounge, rode bikes, 

chatted with the owners about show 

business and rested for the big day. 

Palm Springs has always been the 

playground of movie and television 

stars, celebrities, famous tennis 

players and golfers, presidents, 

humanitarians, and decorated military 

men who changed the course of world 

politics. And now, royalty is becoming 

commonplace with our frequent 

visitor, Prince Mario Max who is 

documented to be descended from 

the Nachod-Branch of the Princely 

House of Schaumburg-Lippe. 

Since the star #400 was presented 

to soap opera star and author, Sean 

Kanan, the Palm Springs Walk of 

Stars has experienced many requests 

from approved candidates for a 

star wanting to be part of the 25th 

Anniversary year. The countdown to 

wrapping up 2016 has added Ross 

Matthews, General George Patton, 

Pat Rizzo, Beverly Johnson, Truman 

Capote, Diane Schuur, Fleet Easton, 

and Donna MacMillan. This has all 

happened since the October 31st 

“Annual Soiree” that celebrates all the 

stars on the walk. 

We have broken all records of Star 

Dedications for the past couple of 

months, giving us the double trifecta, 

and adding to the charm of our resort 

destination with each star on the

With the success of the Arrive under his belt, Chris Pardo - the man 

who is re-imagining Palm Springs and his group - the same people 

who have also designed other “lively” venues locally, have decided 

to expand their continued success of our glorious city and come up 

with a gem that is sure to attract the weekenders in droves. 

Enter The Draughtsman, a Gastro style bar with an edge, now 

officially opened in an upscale neighborhood on the North side of 

the city, bringing the word trendy to the front of my thoughts. Not 

to mention the best popcorn chicken ever. Just ask KESQ’s Bianca 

Rae. Bianca was my date for the night, but every time I turn around 

to chat to somebody or to introduce her the fabulous attendees, 

Bianca was off chasing the popcorn chicken! 

So what’s the deal with their name?

Chris Pardo explains: “Draughtsman is an architect, a person who 

practices or is qualified in mechanical drawing, employed to prepare 

detailed scale drawings of buildings, machinery, etc.” Ooh-la-la… 

The description seems rather appropriate, considering the space is 

designed by Pardo, who’s modernist designs are Reaching Across 

the Coachella Valley And Beyond. 

The restaurant that has a delectable craft beer and wine list held 

its official ribbon-cutting earlier this month, an event that attracted 

hundreds to this fantastically renovated former Pizza Hut. 

Draughtsman sits just next door to the already popular 66-room 

boutique hotel, Arrive, and the umbrella of businesses to open on 

that block. Also on the scene is Reservoir, the restaurant, connected 

to the hotel and Customs Coffee. 

Draughtsman - a renderer of fine foods and craft beers, has a warm,

LIVE Magazine was having a mixer at TRIO 

for Joe Galli when Juli and I met Sean 

and Lindie. We began to talk about “Palm 

Swings” - a film they were producing locally 

in Palm Springs. We hit it off right away. As 

time passed the film was shot and in post. 

Now the film is a ‘wrap’ and Juli and I had 

become Associate Producers on the movie. 

The real dream and hard work was done by 

Director and Producer Sean Hoessli and Co- 

Producer Lindie Kuzmich and the incredible 

cast and crew. 

Levvy: Where did you two meet and how did you discover you would be filmmakers? 

Sean: Lindie and I met over 23 years ago while shooting a movie on 

Mackinac Island, MI. You could say it was love at first sight – although it 

took a few weeks (laughter) – and we knew early on we were destined to 

be filmmakers and live and work together. We’ve worked on many movies 

over the years, and Lindie has pursued a nursing career as well, so it’s 

taken us this long to produce a project together. 

LC: I saw you were Class of 2007 of the American Film Institute in Los 

Angeles. Tell us about the AFI. 

SH: AFI was a wonderful experience. I met and collaborated with so 

many talented filmmakers while attending as a fellow. Several members 

of our team – Screenwriter Amanda Lockhart, Production Designer Rachel 

Lee Payne Darrow, and Cinematographer Kristin Fieldhouse – all attended 

AFI as fellows and that’s how we met. The training is very unique. 

The first year is very production intensive as we produce three short 

films, only to have them ripped apart during reviews by our fellow filmmakers.

After moving to Palm Springs, a young married couple puts their love to 

the test when they discover their neighbors are swingers. 

PALM SWINGS is a fun and honest portrayal of a couples’ experience 

swinging in the lifestyle. 

“We love filming in Palm Springs! 

The people are so supportive... 

we filmed in TRIO and PURPLE 

ROOM, as well as several homes 

here in the desert”

SH: Yes, making movies is very expensive. There’s never enough money 

to do everything you want. In our case it was especially difficult, since we 

made the movie on what Hollywood considers a “micro” budget. Considering 

our cast, locations, shooting on location in Palm Springs, etc. – we 

achieved a lot and all our money is “up on the screen”. The City of Palm 

Springs was very supportive and helpful during the making of the movie. 

Palm Springs provided us with a grant of $5,000 for shooting in the city, 

and considering our extremely low budget, every dollar counted. And 

none of this would have been possible without one of our Executive Producers 

and Location Manager Richard “Kip” Serafin. We met Kip more 

than a year before we started filming, and he helped us find and secure 

all our fabulous locations. We shot all over town including the Skylark 

Hotel, Trio, the Purple Room, Mitchell’s, the Chase Hotel, Grau Vacation 

Rentals, SHAG, downtown Palm Springs, and at several stunning midstars

as we produce our graduate thesis film. My AFI thesis film had it’s world 

premiere at the 2007 Palm Springs ShortsFest, which was actually our 

first trip to Palm Springs. Lindie and I loved Palm Springs so much during 

our first visit, we began vacationing here during getaways from Los 

Angeles. The inspiration for “Palm Swings” came during an anniversary 

trip to Palm Springs. 

LC: What projects have you worked on before producing Palm Swings? 

SH: I have worked on many movies over the years, mainly on the visual 

effects side. I started as a grip/electrician on independent movies in 

Detroit, before transitioning to visual effects and going to work at Industrial, 

Light, & Magic in San Francisco. Working for George Lucas on “Star 

Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace” was certainly a highlight of my 

career. I learned an incredible amount about filmmaking while at ILM. It 

was a fantastic experience working with so many talented, world-class 

artists. It’s become a cliché, but I wanted to become a filmmaker after 

seeing the original “Star Wars” on the big screen as a kid. Working on a 

“Star Wars” movie was a surreal dream come true. After ILM, I worked 

for The Orphanage (started by “orphans” from Lucasfilm) on several very 

cool movies including “Sin City”, “The Day After Tomorrow,” and several 

“Spy Kids” movies. Even after AFI and while we were developing “Palm 

Swings”, I continued to work on other movies including “Gamer”, “Piranha 

3D”, “Shrek 3D” and “Yogi Bear 3D.” 

LC: What persuaded you to move to Palm Springs? 

Lindie: That’s easy – our movie “Palm Swings.” Plus we love it here. 

We were ready to leave Los Angeles after ten years, and making the 

movie here gave us that opportunity. We’ve been living here over two 

years now and have been writing several more movies to shoot here. 

Even a television series. 

LC: With the influx of millennials and others into the Palm Springs scene 

you have managed to show a connection between the new people and 

the Palm Springs residents. Tell us about this connection in your film, 

‘Palm Swings’? 

SH: Thank you. That’s very nice of you to say. At the movie’s heart, 

“Palm Swings” is a love story about a young, married couple moving to 

Palm Springs. When they discover their neighbors are swingers, they 

decide to test their marriage and love while experimenting in the lifestyle. 

Anyone who’s been married for a while, can certainly identify with that 

“7 year itch” and the universal struggles of commitment, trust, honesty, 

and fidelity that most couples face at one time or another. We wanted to 

show a different and diverse side of Palm Springs, while embracing the 

cool mid-century modern style and awesome retro vibe. We like to say 

the movie “sweats” Palm Springs. You can feel the city in every frame, 

especially since we shot during the summer and it was over a hundred 

degrees every day (laughter). Our music is composed by local DJ Alf 

Alpha, and his Palm Springs pool-party sound vibes fit perfectly with the 

movie. Despite the provocative nature and controversial subject matter, 

the movie has a lot of heart and is surprising fun and accessible. American 

filmmakers don’t typically make sensual movies about sex, and the 

movie feels European at times. We think it will be extremely popular with 

millennials and couples looking for something to see on “date night.” 

LC: You got some really talented people involved from Camera to Editing 

to Soundtrack...I mean every department was done so well. The 

Casting was amazing and Lighting was spot on. How did you collect this 

great group of talented people? 

SH: Many of our crewmembers we had worked with previously on other 

AFI projects, so there’s definitely a strong AFI connection to this movie. 

Kristin is an amazing DP and friend, and she and Rachel contributed so 

much to the look of the movie. Palm Springs provides such a beautiful 

backdrop with stunning locations. Our editor Jason Sikora is also a close 

friend, who I’ve known and worked with for years. Tineka Becker did our 

casting and she assembled a perfect cast of stars and rising stars. LIVE 

Magazine’s Juli Ragsdale and Levvy Carriker are great as Associate 

Producers. The movie stars Sugar Lyn Beard, Jackson Davis, Diane Farr, 

Jason Lewis, Chaka Forman, Madison McKinley, and the fabulous Tia 

Carrere. The cast had a fantastic time working in Palm Springs, and they 

were all truly committed to the movie and gave everything I asked from 

them. I’m very proud of the movie and very happy with the finished result. 

LC: The costs of filmmaking can be enormous. The City of Palm Springs 

helped out a bit. Tell us about that program and how you got some funding?

home. We also shot in Desert Hot Springs at Anahata Hot Springs 

and in Palm Desert at the College of the Desert. Executive Producers 

Jay, MiShell, and Josh at SHAG have been tremendous supporters of the 

movie, providing SHAG artwork during the shoot and SHAG artwork for 

our titles sequence. 

LC: Do you have a favorite part of filmmaking? 

SH: I love the work, and when you love what you do, it doesn’t feel like 

work. I really love all parts of the process. My favorite is probably shooting. 

I love the energy of being on set and collaborating with so many 

talented people – cast and crew. I also love editing and post, seeing the 

movie come together. The hardest is probably writing, since you never 

know when you’re done, and sometimes you never are. Raising money is 

definitely my least favorite (laughter)! 

LC: Do you two have any plans you can share with us about your next film? 

SH: We plan to shoot our next film in Palm Springs. It’s called “Heartwork” 

and we just finished the script. It’s a heart-felt comedy about a 

nurse and her dying patient - very different from “Palm Swings.” All we 

need to do now is raise the financing (laughter)! We’re also writing a television 

series, but we can’t talk about the details of that quite yet.

dexterity, and in general they tend to eat more sweets more often, and not brush 

as often. 

There is also another component that needs to be explained here. In the mouth 

there are several types of bacteria. Some are responsible for gum disease and 

some are responsible for decay. Some people may have the best hygiene 

and still have gum disease and some who have the worst hygiene may not 

suffer from gum disease at all. This is because they do not have the bacteria 

responsible for gum disease. Same thing for decay. Some people will be more 

susceptible to decay then others even if they eat just a little sugar and have 

decent dental hygiene. That is because they have that kind of bacteria in their 

mouth in a higher rate then another person. But that is not a reasonable excuse. 

More brushing and plaque control with a topical fluoride application daily, 

preferably with a special personal tray made at the dental office will help. 

Very rarely a person will suffer from gum disease and a high rate of decay. It is 

generally one or the other. If someone has a high rate of decay, in general they will 

not suffer from gum disease like bone loss, periodontal pockets and tooth mobility. 

It is a proven fact though, that the better the dental hygiene you have and the 

better your diet is in terms of limiting sugar intake, the healthier your gums and 

teeth will be. 

So, it is not true that decay affect only kids. As long as you have one tooth in 

your mouth you are subject to get decay if you leave dental plaque on it and eat 

sugar!-- 

Do you think that dental cavities are problems only for 

children? 

The best way to prevent that is to have good dental hygiene at home and 

brushing after any sugar intake, and to visit your dentist 2 to 3 times a year.

It is a general belief that cavities are for kids only. But in fact, 

cavities affect all ages! 

The reason why cavities are more prevalent in children is 

mainly the fact that they tend to eat more sugar and have 

poor hygiene habits. However, when looking at the cause of 

decay, which is basically plaque with the presence of sugar, 

it is easy to understand that cavities can happen at any age 

even if your mouth is full of crowns. 

Of course there are some people who have teeth that are 

softer then others and are easier to decay but that affects 

only 1% of the population. Basically any diet rich in sugar 

will increase your chance of decay. Soft drinks, candies and 

anything sweet will have a potency to create decay in the 

presence of dental plaque. Of course in order to create 

decay there has to be the bacteria that will transfer the sugar 

into acid to decalcify the tooth. It is called dental plaque and 

it forms very quick after eating. The better hygiene a person 

has, the less they will have decay. It takes both sugar and 

plaque to decay a tooth. The more you brush and floss, the 

more plaque removed and the less risk of decay. 

Additionally, elderly patients also tend to have more decay. 

It is more obvious with elderly patients who are loosing their
