at the same moment, I met

college seniors and close
friends, sitting side by side. “I
want you to meet Jay and
Brendan,” a friend said. “You’ll
love them.” A solid prediction.
I did love them. I still do.
Light poured through the windows of
the fraternity house in upstate New York,
where the boys lived like slobs at Castle
Black. Being in there during the day was
like walking through a haunted mansion
with the lights on. Is that a sandwich on the
floor? A tiny poultry bone?
