PROLOGUE<br />
Designs presented in this portfolio are architectural visions and studies mostly proposed in master‘s<br />
program at the Faculty of Architecture of the Czech Technical University. Conducted under the<br />
auspices of academic teams of architects with years of experience in the field - Prof. Ing. arch. Irena<br />
Šestáková, doc. Ing. arch. Vladimír Krátký or doc. Acad. arch. Vladimír Soukenka. Most of the<br />
studies are accompanied by a separate portfolio, presentation posters and „live“ models. Some<br />
of them were later deepened by more detailed engineering designs and analytical seminars. The<br />
intent of processing all projects is the author‘s own presentation with demonstration of interpretation<br />
for future experience in the field.

NATIONS WORKSHOP<br />
In the close proximity to the city Leipziger Osten in Germany arises an opportunity<br />
not only for immigrants. The importance of this center is far beyond. The house<br />
in its expression shows its transparency, tolerance and concepts of integration of the<br />
unemployed - mainly Turks, Arabs, Kurds, Russians, Ukrainians, Vietnamese and Poles.<br />
The area study is based on the assumption of full release of the parter, its volume<br />
separates the busy street Eisenbahnstrasse from a large park with an adjacent school.<br />
Two to four-storey building formed by monolithic reinforced concrete skeletal support<br />
system of regular span, lightweight cladding with tensioned ETFE - foil, which protects<br />
against adverse environmental effects and filters sunlight. Entrances to the building<br />
are exclusively in the space between the volumes forming parter, thereby activating<br />
passages while maintaining important guidelines.<br />
The house serves as a language school, counseling and reading room, multipurpose<br />
hall, but also for leisure activities, administration, associated with<br />
restaurant and café with panoramic terrace.<br />

In co-operation with an independent group of actors and artists, the proposal aims to fullfill needs for training,<br />
work, representation, living and free-time.<br />
Lower volume is variable, mostly open-space workshop or design studios, also serves as an alternative gym with<br />
decent temporary housing on a green roof for artists. Main hall inside is sheltered by a new glazing, suitable<br />
for gallery with exceptional illumination from the top and connects both volumes of the building complex.<br />
Higher volume consists of a public parter with a café, presentation room and storage. Second and third floor plays<br />
the role as alternative theatre, and finally the permanent gallery located in the „tubes“ on the highest floor.<br />
Between the divisions of the gallery is newly inbuilt glazed atrium - beneath formerly removed fourth level,<br />
providing suffcient natural illumination in addition to relieving and enhancing the form of the whole complex.<br />
Design counts with a minimal intervention to its holding structure, adds partitions providing better illumination<br />
and connects both volumes together. It shows that there is a possibility to re-use of seemingly horryfying monolitic<br />
structures of one of many brownfields in Prague for integration and re-making quality in urban space for the future.<br />

URBAN VISION OF “BUDĚJOVICKÁ“<br />
The street “Budějovická“ is becoming a significant element of communications in the city district Prague 4 - Michle.<br />
Abundantly frequented underground station is enlivened by an expansion of a new and universal public space,<br />
defined by adjacent volumes of multi-functional buildings. Shapes of freshly designed objects consistently reproduce<br />
the street line and provides two height - differenciated platforms with recessed square surrounded by vegetation.<br />
Due to mixed functional utilization in the area is the option of lucrative city housing in combination to services<br />
in parter and rentable areas the best offer and solution to the design of this urban conception. The variety of use<br />
rests on a simplicity and directions of important approaches to the bound surroundings.<br />
The proposal counts with involvement of the urban green belt as an image of tree lines on the street providing<br />
a natural barrier, and the possibility to cross the road using pedestrian islets. Extension in the north part of the DBK<br />
building is removed and creates a new perfectly blended arcade aisle combining the area of recessed square<br />
with the rest of the block. This axis also interconnects yet badly accessible space in the south-western part by newly<br />
designed bridge related to “Budějovická“ street. Designed volumes can be accessed as well from the street,<br />
as from the square below, through the service cores in every building. Those have two-level parter with mixed use<br />
of shops, services and administrative offces on higher floors.<br />

The current appearance of the site “Budějovická“ stands the incidence of many barriers.<br />
Vertical volumes closely surround the deeply stored and hardly accessible line<br />
of the underground. The absence of visual and communication axis causes<br />
an ineffcient way to use the urban area. In places outbreaks flow of the public,<br />
the coordination collapses. Disorder of the high volumes and distances between them<br />
have the effect of loosing the legibility of space completely.<br />
Design of the urban area is particularly about removing the original high-rise building<br />
of “Česká Spořitelna“, which is not more suitable for the purpose of today requirements<br />
of administrative buildings. The visual axis formed by the entrance of recessed line<br />
of the underground is maintained so that height differences between both parters are<br />
joint and to make “dead spots“ with undesirable resettling of homeless fully synoptical.<br />
The space is simplified as much as possible and thus retain quality and acquire a sense<br />
of security by approaching or passing through it. Volumes clearly define the boundaries<br />
of public space by its orientation.<br />

The island is inseparably linked with the history of its owners and names. It forms an important urban part of Janáček`s<br />
riverfront in the place of the locks corridor. Along with the “Střelecký“ and “Slovanský“ islands, it connects both banks of the river<br />
in the area north of Jirásek`s bridge. Each of the islands is concieved ideologically acording to its utilization - the Children`s island serves<br />
as the “body“ - for sports, communication, entertainment and recreation. It was already connected before by a second bridge to the<br />
embankment - which is recently in the proposal and follows the axis leading to the Petřín`s lookout tower. The main purpose is to provide<br />
access to the island and all its parts, including access to water. Visual axis contonuously permeates the island from “Žofín“ untill it reaches<br />
“Švandovo divadlo“ square. Specific approach to the terrain raises a smooth transition between the height differences of the riverfront<br />
using the roofs of the original volume of café and a new mass of the city spa. The island and the objects on it communicate with each<br />
other thanks to the regular mass deployment.<br />
Sensitively intersecting surfaces distinguished by its utilization, the terrain game and forms of the volumes and objects extends the concept.<br />
The surface of the city spa and the original café roof gets green. Regularly placed ascends and descends outline a multifunctional tribune<br />
in the centre of the island, which can serve as an amphitheatre for watching various matches or social activities. All parts are wheelchair-<br />
-accessible. Northern part of the island is preserved in reference to history. both of them offer unique views and relaxation areas.<br />

INTERNATIONAL EDUCATIONAL CENTER IN LEIPZIG<br />
The study builds on the project of “Nations workshop“. It presents structural design of interior elements and detailed construction of newly designed staircase. Originally, the restaurant<br />
was divided into two floors and served through a kernel with two bars and two full kitchens. In terms of unification of the space and uneeded oversizing, a half part of the slab was removed<br />
and a wooden tribune staircase with hyperbolical-parabolic curvature was inserted. Therefore, a space for recess of the bar in the lower floor was created and areas for servicing the whole<br />
restaurant and café in the upper floor were visually and functionally distinguished. People can enter the gallery from main entrance and continue to ascend to the café with a smaller bar,<br />
which has been greatly reduced and modified for existing capacity. There is an utility room and an inside balcony for musical occasions , as well as a big exterior sight-seeing terrace<br />
for the needs of both smoking and non-smoking societies in the second floor.<br />
The staircase is dimensioned for ascending, but also for seating. Therefore, individual stages are distinguished and duplicated by inserted “inter-stages“ throughout the length of the output line.<br />
Risers are covered with plexi-glass for maximum visibility through the staircase to the lower part of the bar and outside of it, endowed with option to illuminate each step and highlight the output<br />
direction by embedded diode strips. Stringers and every stage forming the ascent are designed of pre-stressed glued laminated beams to withstand dynamic loads. Glass railings complements<br />
the whole idea of transparency and prevent falling into sides. Wooden handrails are inserted into the glass and provide security when ascending or descending the stairs. Forging of the staircase<br />
is entirely hidden in the construction of wood and thereby minimizing visual aspect of joints. Visible parts of these connections constitute terminations of polished stainless steel.<br />

There are columns covered by marble tiles, walls of “Cupamat“<br />
and bars with surfaces of similar imitation, in addition<br />
to wooden - oak and walnut surfaces. The floors are designed<br />
as epoxy seamless brindle floors of black and white<br />
color. There are “Ecophon“ acoustic elements with shade<br />
of timber capturing noise on the ceiling, suspended by a<br />
hanging aluminum structure.<br />
The furniture is mostly of “Arper“ brand with hard or soft<br />
leather and bar stools “Calligaris“. There are also author designed<br />
wooden and metal tea tables. Illumination is provided<br />
by lights of “Foscarini“ brand hanging from the ceiling<br />
or plasterboards with diffuse lights.<br />

ST. AGNES PILGRIMAGE CONVENT<br />
Genius loci of the area, changes in history and redevelopment calls for the completion of space<br />
along with predestination by the adjoining monastery - creating a tranquil oasis in the maze<br />
of narrow streets and squares. In the context of precursors the rules of the local area are respected;<br />
character of the riverfront, networks of the Old Town squares with its objects and the preservation<br />
of operational units with the adjacent terrain.<br />
<br />
Design of the pilgrimage house with the chapel of St. Agnes follows the Way of St. James to honor<br />
their graves. The concept is greatly minimized and presents only necessary service elements:<br />
accommodation for pilgrims, café, library, lounge, multi-purpose hall, workshops and archives.<br />
Chapel stands for a landmark of the newly established local square, with access to a semi-public<br />
sunken pilgrimage courtyard for the needs of meditation and contemplation.<br />

Surroundings of the buildings is designed in the interests of clarity and easy orientation in space.<br />
The original street and links to the monastery are preserved. There is a possibility of opening<br />
the monastery garden in the eastern part towards the square and connecting to the exposition<br />
spaces of the National Gallery located inside. Volume of the pilgrimage house follows the line<br />
of the convent wall and separates the area from the noisy road of Dvorak‘s waterfront.<br />
Orientation of the entrance follows main public access to the building<br />
and enhances the courtyard garden of the National Gallery<br />
through its north-south axis. Volume clearly defines<br />
the layout of the operational areas and<br />
divides the space with a bond<br />
to the original terrain.<br />
