On This Day
15 Years ago— Saturday 29th December 2001, Dorchester 0 Sittingbourne 1, Att: 430
This was an amazing result when you take into account that Dorchester were the only team in the
Dr Marten Eastern campaign that season to be unbeaten at home, in fact they had only dropped
one point. That's not all, they had gone 8 league games without defeat, they hold the current record
for going the longest in this seasons Dr Marten Eastern campaign without defeat (14 games),
and they have the most clean sheets in the league (10). So few would bet that Sittingbourne
would come away with not only a victory but a clean sheet. Reporter, Peter Pitts, gave Man Of
The match to goalkeeper Gavin Hopper but there were great performances from a number of
players notably Andrew Drury (now back at Ebbsfleet after an illustrious few seasons ) and Jamie
Coyle ( now Maidstone United). Drury , who is featured in the Non League Newspaper article
elsewhere in the programme, scored the only goal.
Team: Gavin Hopper, Michael Everitt, Tom Berry, Clint Gooding, Jamie Coyle, James Campbell,
Sammy Okafor, Andrew Drury, Tyrone King, Bradley Spice, Perry Spackman, Subs Corrie Griffin
10 Years ago—Tuesday 26th December 2006, Dover Ath 2 Sittingbourne 0, Att: 852
Sittingbourne’s second Christmas game that season ended in defeat by 2-0 to Dover Athletic
meaning that they had failed to win in December and dropped to seventh in the league. However
if this position in the table was offered at the beginning of the season I think that most Sittingbourne
fans would have accepted it and they were still only one point off a play off place and
with games in hand over some of the clubs above them. The game started a little tetchy and on
the quarter hour referee, Mr Meilack (who remembers Frank Meilack? A referee from Sussex
who always refereed flamboyantly and with good humour) talked to both captains in an attempt to
quiet things down, to this point neither side had seriously troubled the opposing goalkeeper. Generally
though it was Dover who were in charge and yet again it was goal keeper, Steve Williams.
Who was Man Of The Match. Dover’s first goal was the result of a harsh penalty award. Ex Brickie,
Bradley Spice converting it.
Team: Steve Williams, Toby Ashmore, Joe Dowley, Paul Ainsworth, Steve Searle, James Campbell,
Lee Browning, Clint Gooding, Mark Lovell, Lee Hockey, Mitchell Sherwood, sub: Jon Neal,
Tristan Knowles, Hicham Akhazzan (all played), Ricky Spiller, Josh Willis
5 Years ago—Saturday 31st December 2011, Ramsgate 3 Sittingbourne 2, Att: 217
Five years ago Sittingbourne succumbed to a rare (recent history) defeat at the hands of Ramsgate. There
was almost a sensational start for Sittingbourne as with barely 2 minutes on the clock
Dan Palfreys cross swung goal-wards but Luke Wheatley headed the ball off the line. A minute
later though slack marking from the Brickies allowed Ian Pullman to strike a great shot past Matt
Reed. From then on the Brickies defence looked shaky and a 2nd Rams goal was added. In time
added on before the break, Ramsgate struck again. There looked no way back for Sittingbourne
but Joe Goldsmith did get a goal , ending a goal drought that had lasted for 429 minutes. Joe
Nwoko pulled one back but that was the best the Brickies could do.
Team: Matt Reed, Ryan Cooper, Dan Palfrey, Anthony Hogg, Jonathan Hogg, Cedric Abraham,
Ryan Palmer (Josh West), Luke Girt (Luke Coleman), Joe Nwoko, Joe Goldsmith (Bryan Glover),
Hitcham Akhazzan. Subs not used, Ryan Golding, Jaie Nuttall
