This man thought he was being careful, but Jesus called him lazy and wicked. God has called us to bear fruit. Jesus said, “You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain...” John 15:16. Artificial Fruit: The Fooler The opposite of fruit of the Holy Spirit is rather easy to describe, such as strife instead of peace, and sadness instead of joy. But what about the “artificial” fruit of the Spirit; that which has a similar appearance of real fruit, but upon examination is merely artificial? Artificial Love: Insincere Talk True love has action and substance. Many times all the right things are said and even hugs are exchanged. Yet it is not the genuine love of God which would move the person to help you in time of need, or give necessary encouragement. “My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth” 1 John 3:18. Artificial Joy: Silliness and Giddiness Christians that do not have the power of the Holy Spirit in their lives often rely on the overabundance of corny jokes and silly talk, not understanding that this is not the true joy of the Lord. The true joy of the Lord is far beyond happiness or lightheartedness, and passes description. “...you rejoice with 90
Fruit Glorifies God joy inexpressible and full of glory” 1 Peter 1:8. This is not to say that there is no place for humor. True humor is from God, and Christians have the best sense of humor in the world, best described as sanctified wit. Artificial Peace: Passiveness This “ho-hum” attitude fools many people into thinking they are experiencing the peace of God just because they are not worried about anything. Often they slip into things. Yet, the peace of God is to rule in our hearts! (Colossians 3:15). True peace is most easily recognized when conditions are encountered that are not conducive to peace. Artificial Patience: Laziness Many have substituted laziness for peace, and have the attitude that “Whenever God is ready, I am.” Yet, God commands us to ask, seek and knock (Luke 11:9), and to seek Him diligently (Hebrews 11:6). True patience is to have an attitude of excited expectancy, yet being willing to let God manifest things in His timing and His way. Artificial Gentleness: Politeness Truly the nature of the Holy Spirit is gentle. “But we were gentle among you, just as a nursing mother cherishes her own children” 1 Thessalonians 2:7. A polite or sociallyrefined character is far different from the gentleness and compassion the Holy Spirit produces. “A soft (gentle) answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger” Proverbs 15:1. Artificial Goodness: Good Deeds Without God Being nice or doing good has nothing to do with being a Christian. Countless sinners who do not know the person of Jesus are people who still do good deeds. As a Christian, our 91
