Staff news
Goodbye from
Rachel Levay
I am very sad to be saying goodbye to
Allsorts after seven years of working
for the charity, firstly as a trustee and
then, for the last four years, as Chief
Executive. I have been involved right from
the beginning when Allsorts was set up
by a handful of parents and carers who
wanted more choice and activities for
their own and other families who have
children with disabilities and additional
needs. It has been fantastic to be part
of such an inspiring and thriving charity,
and this is down to the members getting
involved and supporting each other, and
the brilliant and committed team of staff,
trustees and volunteers, all building a
positive and strong community together.
As Allsorts has grown, the Chief Executive
position has grown too, and it now needs
someone who can commit to Allsorts
full time and bring fresh energy into
the role. I’m delighted to say that we
have recruited someone who fits the bill
and Georgia Boon is very much looking
forward to starting with Allsorts as the
new Chief Executive.
It’s not goodbye from me altogether
though. As a member of Allsorts myself,
my family has benefited hugely over the
years from belonging to such a
friendly and supportive
charity, and we will
continue being members
for years to come.
New CEO,
Georgia Boon
I’m delighted to be
joining Allsorts as CEO.
My husband and two
daughters were invited along
to the family fun day the first summer
after we moved to Stroud. We all had
such a great time and I was so impressed
with the organisation.
I’ve been involved with families with
young people with disabilities ever
since I was little as my Grandparents
were founder members of Open Door in
Dursley. Then when I graduated from
University I went to Belarus to work with
young people with disabilities. It was a
great experience although the provision
and care was very poor there at the time.
Since then I’ve worked in senior
management roles for Oxfam and
Christian Aid, mostly focused on strategic
planning, volunteering, fundraising,
corporate partnerships and digital
development. In my spare time, I’m a
parent governor at Archway school and
volunteer to teach reading at Rosary
School.
I want to start my time at Allsorts by
meeting as many people as I can and
coming to as many activities as I can - so
I hope to meet you very soon.
In the meantime, please do contact me
directly with any ideas, questions or
thoughts on georgia.boon@allsortsglos.
Members Forum
Members Forum Feedback
Thank you on behalf of Naomi and
Clarissa, to those members who attended
our relaunched Members Forum, held in
the Allsorts Meeting Room on Tuesday 29th
November 2016.
It was great to meet those members and
to tell them about our plans and most
importantly, hear their thoughts and
feedback.
The next Members Forum will be on
Wednesday 29th March 2017, 1pm –
2.30pm. It will be held in the Allsorts
Meeting Room, The Exchange, Stroud, GL5
1DF. It’s your opportunity to meet Allsorts
staff, hear about our plans, voice any
concerns and suggest new ideas.
It’s really important that Allsorts keeps
listening to its members and acting on what
you tell us, so please do come along and let
us know what you think!
The key things that were discussed in the
forum were:
Staff Changes – we’re extremely sad to say
goodbye to our current Chief Executive,
Rachel Levay but we welcome Georgia
Boon to the team from January 2017.
Family Trips – we’re pleased to be able to
share all of the Family Trips that will be
taking place up until the end of August
2017. The annual member’s questionnaire
revealed that you would like the trips well
in advance so you can plan holidays and
your diaries around them. Please see pages
25-27 for more information about the trips,
prices and how to book your place.
Website – we’re currently building our
new website which will be live in early
2017. The website will feature all of the
current services and activities available to
you, as well as a calendar for you to easily
see what activities are taking place on a
specific day.
Early Years and 18-25 years – we’re proud
to say that Allsorts now supports children
from ages 0 to 25 years with our two new
groups; Early Years and our 18-25 years
weekly social group. We’ve also recruited a
young disabled person, Lettie Tongue, who
is working alongside the young people to
make sure their voices are heard. Welcome
to the team Lettie!
Summer – the Members Forum revealed
that it is often difficult to find enough
activities to do over the summer. Allsorts
will look into the feasibility of improving our
range of options and will report back to you
at the next Members Forum.
Financial and Strategy Documents –
the members at the forum expressed
an interest in being able to access our
financial reports, annual report and strategy
documents. These documents will be
uploaded onto our website for you to view
so you can understand our current position
and our plans for the future. It is important
that Allsorts is transparent and we welcome
any questions about those documents.
Feedback – we’re really interested in what
you have to say about Allsorts. If you want
to get in touch electronically rather than
in person, you can email comments@
allsortsglos.org.uk.
Please register your interest in attending the Members Forum by contacting
Naomi Boast - naomi.boast@allsortsglos.org.uk.
Spotlight on an
Allsorts Trustee
Mike and Stephanie Baker
Our names are Mike and Stephanie Baker. We
have 3 children and live in Fairford. Our son
has Down’s Syndrome and underwent a renal
transplant at the age of 2 ½. We discovered
Allsorts when we started looking around for
social activities. We both felt it was really
important for our son to have the same opportunities to socialise
as his sisters. Our son enjoyed going along to Sound-it Out music
sessions and the 6-8 kids club. He is currently enjoying the sports
sessions at Cirencester Leisure Centre.
We chose to become joint trustees of Allsorts following a request for more parents/carers
to get involved. By sharing this role we believe we can bring our different areas of interest
and expertise to the meetings. Stephanie is a former Social Worker with particular interest
in how Allsorts can make sessions accessible to all and take on board the views and
suggestions of its members. Mike is a retired Engineer and has experience of finance and
governance, as well as being a School Governor. We are very much looking forward to
making a positive contribution to Allsorts.
Sharon Marson
I’ve always been involved in my local community – volunteering my
time helping children learn and develop via involvement in local
sports clubs, school PTA and as a Governor. I am honoured to be
an Allsorts Trustee – a charity which works with local families to
make a real difference to their everyday lives and their children. As
a parent to three boys, it’s important that our children get the best
opportunities in life to be the best they can – Allsorts fits the bill
perfectly!
Being a trustee is really interesting and makes a huge difference
to a small charity like Allsorts.
If you’d like to learn more or apply to be a trustee, please
contact Georgia at georgia.boon@allsortsglos.org.uk
Allsorts AllStars vs. Special
Olympics Mixed
Allsorts Football Team – ‘Allsorts AllStars’
– took to the pitch for their first official
Football Match on October 25th at the
Special Olympics celebration event in
Cheltenham. The 6 players (see picture
for names) played two 20 minute matches
against two mixed Special Olympic Teams
in Leisure @ Sports Centre, in front of a
lively crowd of family members and keen
observers!
The first match went off at a frantic pace,
with the AllStars winning 7-2. Ben Wood’s
clinical performance saw him score four
goals with co-captain Alfie Mustoe chipping
in with three goals himself. The strike force
duo were backed up by solid defensive
performances from Alex Batterham and
James King, with excellent distribution
from both players. Liam Kingston was a
constant menace to the opposition, whilst
Sam Frasier provided a superb box-to-box
performance for the team.
The second game was a more evenly
contested fixture. The Special Olympic team
constantly tested the defensive capabilities
of the AllStars, but Alex Batterham, James
King and Sam Frasier kept the Special
Olympic Team at bay. Alfie Mustoe and
Ben Wood bagged a goal each, with some
excellent link up play throughout. The star
moment came from Liam Kingston, who in
the final minutes of the game broke away
from the opposition defence and curled
an excellent finish into the far corner. The
crowd went wild! The game finished as a
3-3 draw, and after a lengthy shootout the
Special Olympics Team scored the decisive
spot-kick and took the second game.
A fine afternoon of Football played out
professionally by all players. A big thank
you to all the families and friends who
came to support, with special mention
to Allsorts volunteers Gemma Wilks and
Shannon Rowe for coaching the Special
Olympics teams. Allsorts AllStars are
looking forward to many more Football
matches against teams from across
Gloucestershire – so watch this space!
Our Voice
to Live
Friday 10th
February
National Star College
Cheltenham
Our Voice to Live is a Gloucestershire network of young people with
disabilities or additional needs who join together to share experiences,
have their voices heard and influence changes to service provision
across Gloucestershire.
Allsorts worked closely with National
Star College to initiate and support this
network and are excited to be supporting
the forthcoming Our Voice to Live event,
the third of its kind.
In February a large gathering of 16-25
year olds will join together at National
Star College, Cheltenham. The young
people are planning a full day of activities
and discussions: They’ll hear from others
with disabilities about their experiences
of the workplace, apprenticeships and
volunteering; conduct a survey to gather
information about what issues and
concerns their peers face; create a record
of the day on film; and try out some
fun craft and sports activities. Students
from sixth forms and colleges across
Gloucestershire are invited, and 16-25
year olds who have left education can
contact us to book their place.
College; Inclusion Gloucestershire’s drama
project with younger age groups; Allsorts’
creation of a part time paid project
assistant post for a young person with a
disability; and ongoing work to create a
personal assistant register. We hope that
this is just the beginning and that the
list of changes keeps on growing as the
network strengthens and develops.
Contact ourvoicetolive@allsortsglos.org.uk
for more detail.
It is important to those involved that talk
leads to action and Our Voice To Live have
already helped to influence: the creation
of a Girl Guide Group at National Star
Fundraising
Welcome to the latest edition of our
Newsletter. I’d like to take this opportunity
to thank all of you who supported our
fundraising efforts. We had individuals
and community groups organising events
and coming up with ingenious ways to
raise funds for Allsorts. Some of you
will remember the donation of £17,836
which came as a result of Keith Allen’s
appearance on ITV’s The Chase – this was
a fantastic boost for us. As we continue
to grow, as do our own fundraising plans,
and we’re very excited to share them with
you.
For many people, January is a time to
think about what goals they are going to
set themselves for the year. If you are keen
to challenge yourself and raise sponsorship
for Allsorts in 2017, please have a look at
our suggestions and see if anything takes
your fancy!
Stroud Choirs Big Sing
On 21st November 2016, several choirs
from the Stroud District came together
for their annual ‘Big Sing’ event. Each
choir sang a couple of songs then they all
sang together. After hearing about Allsorts
and another charity Lend with Care, the
choirs all shared cake and generously gave
donations. They raised £1,513.65 for us –
an amazing amount!
Are you part of a choir which may be able
to put on an event for us? If so, we’d love
to hear from you.
Archway school
We are very happy to have been chosen as
one of the charities that Archway School
in Stroud is currently supporting. We have
8 Duke of Edinburgh students who are
doing their volunteering placement with
us. As part of this, they will be planning
a week of fundraising activity in March
which will not only raise vital funds, but
showcase all of our services and how we
support young people with disabilities or
additional needs.
Can you help?
We are looking for businesses who would
like to support us in 2017 and make a big
difference locally. By partnering with Allsorts
they could be introduced to volunteering
opportunities, get involved with events and
team building exercises, share skills with us
or young disabled people… and more.
If you know of a company that might
be interested, please put us in
touch with them.
