READING CLUB BEGINS<br />

Our reading club continues until <strong>February</strong> 28. You<br />

can beat the winter blues by curling up with a few<br />

good books and gaining an opportunity to win a prize<br />

for your efforts. Feel like taking a road trip in print?<br />

Are you feeling bookish? Would you like to read a<br />

retelling of a Shakespeare play or a fairytale? Stop by<br />

the adult reference desk to pick up your Cabin Fever<br />

reading club booklet (which besides the topics mentioned,<br />

allows you four free choices!), take away some<br />

booklists to help point you in the right direction for<br />

great books and check out the prize possibilities!<br />

ANXIETY AND ITS<br />

IMPACT ON THE FAMILY<br />

According to the National Institute on Mental<br />

Health, approximately 18% of the population<br />

suffers from anxiety disorders. Debra Whittam<br />

will visit Northland on Thursday, <strong>February</strong> 2 at<br />

7 p.m. to discuss how anxiety impacts the family.<br />

In particular, she will review the dynamics<br />

of particular roles in different styles of families,<br />

sibling roles, parenting styles and how anxiety<br />

is passed down from generation to generation.<br />

Debra will also address how family members<br />

can reduce anxiety.<br />

Debra’s memoir, Am I Going to be Okay?<br />

Weathering the Storms of Mental Illness, Addiction<br />

and Grief will be available at a discounted<br />

price of $15. Registration is required.<br />

COMING IN FEBRUARY<br />

The Library will once again be partnering with<br />

the AARP to offer tax prep for senior citizens<br />

and low-income residents. The Library will host<br />

the AARP on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning<br />

<strong>February</strong> 7 through April 13 from 9 a.m. – noon.<br />

IRS-trained volunteers will help in preparing<br />

both federal and state forms. This service is offered<br />

on a first-come, first-served basis and we<br />

cannot guarantee that everyone needing help<br />

will be accommodated on any given day. Please<br />

remember to bring all necessary paperwork<br />

to complete the forms. A sign-up sheet will be<br />

located outside the lower lobby entrance beginning<br />

at 7:30 a.m., so early arrivals can register<br />

and then either wait in their car or return when<br />

the library opens.<br />

HOW THE GREAT DEPRESSION<br />

BUILT NORTH PARK<br />

Join the Allegheny County Park Rangers to<br />

explore the history of North Park on Thursday,<br />

<strong>February</strong> 23 from 7 – 8 p.m. Learn how the<br />

Great Depression shaped the parks and gave<br />

our country’s young men an opportunity to<br />

work and gain valuable skills. All ages welcome.<br />

DIGITAL BOOT CAMP FOR PARENTS:<br />

TALKING ABOUT TECHNOLOGY<br />

WITH YOUR STUDENT<br />

Technology and the Internet are powerful<br />

tools, talking to your student about them is vital<br />

in raising a knowledgeable digital citizen. Learn<br />

essential topics and ways to initiate this conversation<br />

on Saturday, <strong>February</strong> 25 from 8:30<br />

a.m. to 10 a.m. Part of our Digital Boot Camp<br />

for Parents series, this session will also cover<br />

digital health and wellness issues, like Internet<br />

addiction. It will be held at CCAC North campus;<br />

Room 3002. Doors open at 8:30 a.m. with<br />

the presentation starting promptly at 9 a.m.<br />

Registration is required and space is limited.<br />

An American Sign Language Interpreter will be<br />

present at this session.<br />

INDIAN COOKING CLASS: GREEN<br />

BEANS AND POTATO CURRY<br />

Join our favorite Indian cook, Ann Manchella,<br />

on <strong>February</strong> 27 from 7-8 p.m. as she demonstrates<br />

the preparation of another tasty<br />

vegetarian food from India: Green Beans and<br />

Potato Curry. Adding some fresh green beans<br />

to potatoes yields a very flavorful and tasty<br />

curry that goes well with flat bread or hot rice.<br />

Watch her preparation and taste a generous<br />

sample. Copies of the recipe will be available<br />

for you to take home to try it for yourself.<br />

Terrarium Design and Construction. From simple<br />

decorative terrariums to lush vivarium filled<br />

with plants and animals, we will discuss the<br />

different styles and methods used for construction<br />

and care. Each participant will be provided<br />

with all of the supplies needed to build their<br />

own mini-terrarium that they can take home<br />

with them. The session will consist of a power<br />

point presentation, Q&A time, and build time<br />

with instruction.<br />

Limited space available (20 participants). Cost<br />

is $7 Per Person for supplies and pre-registration<br />
