The description of their married life is
filled with fond memories – a cute garage
apartment in Jackson, law school at night for
Dan and a daytime job of delivering mail from
six to six o’clock to help make their living.
Marianna graduated from Mississippi College
and worked as a nutritionist at the University
Medical Center.
Even though the couple sat opposite each
other during the interview, it was obvious that
their hearts were side by side. When describing
their marriage, Marianna said, “We just get
along – we enjoy each other’s company!” She
describes her mate as possessing a generous
portion of thoughtfulness.
Along with his years as an attorney, Dan has
served in the senate, and Marianna is still a
member of the Official Mississippi Women’s
Club where she’s served as president. First
Baptist Church Brandon has been their church
anchor since 1960.
The two have been active mixed-doubles
tennis players, and Dan touts a thirty-year span
of playing tennis every Sunday afternoon with
Waymon Tigrett, Jack Root, and Jack Rhodes.
The Martin’s two children, Dana Penick
and husband Durell, and son Garron Martin
and wife Wanda, live close by so enjoying their
four grandsons and one granddaughter-in-law
brings them added delight.
When asked about clues to their happily
married years, Dan spoke first, “Marianna has
never contested any decisions I’ve ever made.”
Marianna added, “He’s always discussed
decisions with me, but it’s been his call. His
decisions are usually wiser than mine.”
After being with them briefly, it’s obvious
that two of their wisest decisions were
choosing each other. ■
