Hearing Hearts with their Camille Anding A new study published in The Journal of Neuroscience says people who are born deaf are compensated with other enhanced abilities. For Keith and Suzanne Salter, both deaf from birth, that enhanced ability has to be their extraordinary hearts. Their positive outlook on life, and their achievement in the midst of what some might call adversity, are astounding. Keith and Suzanne are still sweethearts after meeting and falling in love at Hinds Community College. Suzanne recalls with detail the day her roommate attempted to persuade her to go on a blind date with one of her friends. Suzanne explained, “First she said that he was deaf like me, then tall and very smart. Then she added, ‘He’s red-headed.’ I told her, ‘No thank you.’” The couple paused to laugh at the well-kept memory. A week later, Suzanne’s friend pointed out Keith on campus. “He was good looking!” Suzanne said. She quickly became much more interested in the blind date.
