fair families Meet the Gents When Cale and Kaylyn Gent were in kindergarten, there was no question that they would join the Clover Kids, a 4-H club for younger children. Their father, Skott, had joined the Monmouth Co-Ed 4-H Club (the first co-ed club in the county, hence the name) his senior year of high school. Mom Christine was in the Preston Jolly Workers 4-H Club. “The boys’ club was the Preston Calf Club, and we were the Preston Jolly Workers,” the former dairy showman said. “In the mid-1980s clubs became co-ed. The Preston clubs consolidated in the 2000s.” The Gents, who live on the eastern edge of Jones County, are strong believers that 4-H makes kids try things outside their comfort zone, while building relationships with other 4-H’ers. “The thing about 4-H is that it gets you out of your bubble,” Christine said. “Like Kaylyn, it gives her an opportunity to meet new friends who aren’t in her school district.” Kaylyn shows dogs and – her favorite – goats. She got her first goat, named Kate, in fifth grade. “We learned that goats are a little bit “It’s not always about the quality of the project, but how you present it.” — christine gent harder than [they] look,” her mother said. “Once they get over about a year old, they get a little strong.” Christine and Kaylyn, a senior at Midland High School in Wyoming, recalled some of their favorite memories showing goats. During one show Kaylyn received help from Wendy Casel, a family friend, who struggled to control the bigger goat. “I don’t know what happened, but Wendy ended up doing a somersault in the middle of the ring because of the goat!” Christine said. Kaylyn won two plaques at the Jackson County Fair for puppy obedience and most improved exhibitor with her dog, Zoey, a black Lab terrier. Showing canines is a much bigger time commitment than other animals. 4-H clubs have meetings where dog show participants must go to work with other 4-H’ers on training their four-legged friends. The meetings were held every Monday for three months, and Kaylyn missed only once. Along with her dogs, Kaylyn enjoys indoor projects, and she has had at least one project considered for state fair every year in high school. Cale, now a sophomore at Iowa State University, is majoring in agronomy. He said FFA, more than anything, had shaped his career choice. Christine explained that 4-H really helps to build communication skills. “It’s not always about the quality of the project, but how you present it,” she said. — Beau Bowman, Kelly Gerlach, Deven King, eastern iowa farmer Thiel MoTor SaleS inc.
