Stop deportation
Diaspora groups urge U.S. President Obama to stop
deporting Haitians immediately
NEW YORK, New York – Two major
Haitian Diaspora groups have launched
an online petition, requesting that United
States President, Barack Obama,
immediately halt the deportation of
undocumented Haitians in the wake of
the massive destruction caused to the
French-speaking Caribbean country by
Hurricane Matthew, a month ago.
The Haiti Renewal Alliance and the
United Front of the Haitian Diaspora,
last Friday, launched the petition, saying
that they are hoping to build awareness
to support it, which, on receiving
100,000 signatures, will require an official
response from the White House.
“This petition is to urge President
Barack Obama to grant Deferred Enforcement
Departure (DED), expand
and/or Re-designate Temporary Protected
Status (TPS) for Haitian nationals,
including recently arrived individuals
who are currently threatened with
deportation, based on the devastation of
Hurricane Matthew,” the petition states.
It notes that Hurricane Matthew “violently
struck Haiti and resulted in the
country’s largest humanitarian crisis
since the 2010 earthquake”.
The petition states Matthew caused
extensive damage, leaving more than 2.1
million people at risk of food insecurity,
homelessness, and increased cholera
and other diseases.
“It is currently impractical, unsafe
and inhumane to deport people into the
country at this time. Haitians are hardworking,
law-abiding, contribute to the
US economy, as well as supporting their
families via remittances.”
US Congresswoman, Yvette D.
Clarke, who represents the 9th Congressional
District in Brooklyn, New York,
told the Caribbean Media Corporation
Citizenship By
Investment Program
could benefit from
Donald Trump’s
victory, says OECS
Director General
CASTRIES, St. Lucia — The Citizenship
by Investment Program (CIP) in
member countries of the Organisation of
Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) could
benefit from Donald Trump’s victory at
the polls in the United States.
This is according to the Director General
of the OECS, Dr. Didacus Jules;
based on the unexpected outcome of the
election in the United States, many people
are making the determination that
they should probably move out of the
country.
In a statement, today, Jules suggested
that the Trump Presidency could provide
a “special opportunity” for countries in
the sub-region with CIP arrangements.
He said offering citizenship can be a
real boost to CIP programs.
“Sometimes in what appears to be
a crisis, there are opportunities and we
need to find those opportunities,” the
OECS official explained.
His comments endorsed a statement
from citizenship advisory firm, Henley
and Partners, that in the hours since
Trump’s victory, there has been a sharp
increase in Americans inquiring about
alternative residence and citizenship
programs.
“Such spikes happen when citizens become
uncertain about the future of their
country. They seek safer options for their
families,” Henley and Partners told the
Antigua Observer.
Henley and Partners believe that other
events such as Brexit were “having
a significant impact on the interest by
wealthy individuals and families in alternative
residence and citizenship”.

Haiti facing major food crisis
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, –Reports
indicate that the international community
has fallen short in its commitment to
assist in Haiti’s recovery since Hurricane
Matthew left it in devastation mere weeks
ago.
The country’s interim president, Jocelerme
Privert, corroborates these reports,
stating that the devastating losses experienced
last month were in the amount
of the nation’s whole budget. Privert also
stated that Haiti is facing a “major food
crisis” and worsening levels of hunger
and malnutrition. He continues to urge
world governments to do more to assist
Haiti in this crisis.
The storm, which was a category 4, is
the strongest to have hit the Caribbean in
over a decade. It has left large portions
of the nation devastated and has affected
approximately 2.1 million people.
The Haitian government has estimated
that 1.5 million of those are in need
of immediate aid, with 140,000 of those
living in temporary shelters.
Citizens attempting to rebuild homes
have resorted to using metal, wood, and
plastic tarpaulin.
Privert said he “didn’t want to see Haitian
people die because of the unavailability
of international assistance.” He
added that without immediate support
financially, so crops can be planted, Haiti’s
current crisis could worsen further.
“If we don’t manage to re-launch agriculture
then in three to four months we’ll
find ourselves with a major food crisis.
Our projection is that we need between
$25m (£20m) and $30m to resolve the
farming issue. Right now we have $2.5m.”
Chief Executive Ann Lee of the
non-profit relief organization J/P HRO
shares that they have been delivering aid
to the people of Haiti ever since 2010,
but said that a serious crisis is eminent if
funding does not come
“What we’re seeing is a lot of hunger.
Haiti has experienced three years
of drought before the hurricane so there
were already high levels of malnutrition.
Now tens of thousands of acres of crop
land and millions of fruit trees have been
destroyed.”
A week after the disaster hit, due to the
ferocious effect of Hurricane Matthew,
the United Nations launched a campaign
This year’s U.S. Presidential and
Down-Ballot elections are now over
Shockingly, and surprisingly,
Donald Trump has electrocuted
America and the world
with his stunning electoral
victory...He has defied several
predictions.
The victory had volcano
and earthquake effects...And
many cannot get over this
feat.
To win, a Candidate must
get 270 electoral votes--a majority
of the 538 total.
Mr.Trump won, although
he did not have a record of
Public- Service, and he did
not honor the tradition of every
other Presidential-Nominee--he
did not submit any
tax-returns.
He proved that when a
Candidate has a corps of fanatical
followers, he/she can
get away with almost anything.
President--elect--Trump
rode a national backlash
against the status quo into an
improbable victory...He knew
instinctively how to connect
with the anger in this country...He
got it that this is a divided
country--almost down
the middle.
Mr.Trump’s rhetoric on
the economy, trade and taxes
Marijuana wins big on U.S. election night
By Carlyle Harry
NEVADA – Voters in California,
Massachusetts and
Nevada approved recreational
marijuana initiatives Tuesday
night, and several other states
passed medical marijuana
provisions, in what is turning
out to be the biggest electoral
victory for marijuana reform
since 2012, when Colorado
and Washington first approved
the drug’s recreational
use.
Of the five recreational
marijuana initiatives on the
ballot, three passed and one
more — in Maine — was leading
early Wednesday in preliminary
vote totals. A similar
measure in Arizona was trailing
with 68 percent of votes
resonated with a fed up electorate,
he played into the fears
of many, promising to bring
back manufacturing jobs and
to loosen regulations on businesses...
He also vowed to
renegotiate trade-deals and
cut taxes...He promised real
change.
At 70, Mr. Trump is the
oldest person elected to the
White-House.
...Looking at Body-Language
after the Elections, the
Republicans appeared to be
at a wedding, while the Democrats
appeared to be at a funeral.
Mr. Trump has become
“America’s forty-fifth President...He
is going to be a powerful
Head of State, as he is
going to be armed with a Republican
Congress; a Republican
Senate; and most likely a
friendly Supreme Court.
With the stroke of a pen,
Mr. Trump can eliminate
President Clinton’ executive
orders...He will most likely
surgically destroy the pillars
of President Obama’s legacy--including
Obamacare and
the Nuclear deal with Iran.
Mr. Trump, immediately
after his victory had many
Never-Trumpers, and anti-Trumpers
running cap-inhand
in order to extend congratulations,
and to offer to
work with and him.
--Of course, every society
is occupied with those who
support the Party-in-Power(PIPs),
as well as soup-.
seekers and soup- consumers.
It will be interesting to see
how Mr.Trump is going to
treat his many detractors, because
the Businessman often
maintained that when he gets
hit, he likes to “hit back, and
hit back harder”.
(Mr.Trump’s victory has
Social-Media operatives
sending out”Beware of 9/11,
and 11/9”).
One also has to ask what
type of GLASS, the ceiling
that Hillary Clinton has been
trying to smash for several
years, is made of.
THE POLLS...perhaps
the most damaged personnel
from last week Tuesday’s
elections, are the majority of
pollsters who in unison had
Secretary Clinton winning
the elections by significant
margins, even after the James
Comey letter; the pollsters
were very wrong with predictions
about how the elections
were going to pan out, as well
as how various Demographics
were going to vote.
Again, The major lesson
that Donald Trump has
taught, is that once a Leader,
or an aspiring Leader cultivates
and nurtures a corps
of loyal supporters and followers,one
can ignore public
views and opinions...One can
freely say and or do almost
anything to an individual,
group or community.
In closing, let’ s remember
that saying,”You are only in
the majority, until you are in
the minority”.
counted.
On the medical side, voters
in Florida, North Dakota and
Arkansas have approved medical
marijuana initiatives. A
separate measure in Montana
that would loosen restrictions
on an existing medical pot law
was leading early Wednesday
with only 30 percent of votes
counted.
Reformers were jubilant.
“This represents a monumental
victory for the marijuana
reform movement,” said
Ethan Nadelmann, executive
director of the Drug Policy
Alliance, in a statement.
“With California’s leadership
now, the end of marijuana
Trade dispute
Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago in
trade disgreement over duck meat
PARAMARIBO, – Suriname is trying
to resolve a trade dispute with Trinidad
and Tobago which prevents the Dutch island
from exporting duck meat from entering
the Trinidad and Tobago market.
The government said the issue can be
resolved as soon as the Trinidad and Tobago
government amends its Animal Act,
under the CARICOM Council for Trade
and Economic Development (COTED).
COTED has urged the Trinidad authorities
to take the necessary steps to
resolve the issue in a timely way.
COTED-chair and Agriculture Minister
of Dominica, Johnson Drigo noted,
however, that since legislative procedures
could take some time, Trinidad could not
offer a timeline when the matter would
be resolved definitely.
Since December 2015, Trinidad has
prevented the importation of meat from
Suriname after Trinidad raised concerns
the processes at the duck facility were not
in conformity with international food
safety measures.
nation. A month has passed and only
38 percent of that goal set by the UN
has been raised, with the majority of the
pledge coming from the United States. The
United Kingdom made a commitment to
pledge $10 million to help with the efforts
to assist Haiti in the wake of the hurricane,
yet only a fraction of that, at a little more
than $2 million has been paid.
However, a spokesperson for the British
government has said that “Britain has
played its part in assisting those in immediate
need” by providing those affected
with water, shelter, and protection from
unsanitary surroundings. Yet Lee states
that some of the communities that are in
remote locations in the nation have not
been reached by anyone providing assistance.
“There is gratitude because we bring
some assistance to them but there’s also a
lot of despair, everyone is suffering,” she
says.
Mr. Privert states that more needs to be
done.
“The international community has expressed
deep sympathy for the Haitian
people and heads of state have contacted
us, heads of government have provided
some support both moral and material,
is to be developed for a Tourism Networks
Policy and Strategy.
He noted that the implementation of
the policy will require the collaboration
of several ministries.
The ministries of Tourism, and Transport
and Mining will be critically involved
in the consultations for development
of the policy and strategy.
He also noted that Cabinet granted
approval for Jamaica to host the United
Nations World Tourism Organization
(UNWTO) Conference, next year, to culminate
the International Year of Sustainable
Tourism for Development.
JetBlue
continues to
grow Cuba
presence with
new service to
Holguin
NEW YORK, USA – JetBlue has
announced the start of new daily
nonstop service between Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood
International
Airport (FLL) and Holguín’s Frank
País Airport (HOG) in Cuba.
Holguín becomes the third city
served in Cuba from the airline’s
south Florida focus city. With service
to Holguín, JetBlue now operates
42 nonstop flights each week
between the two countries and
more coming in late November with
the launch of Havana.
“Each time we launch a new
Cuba destination we expand affordable,
customer-friendly air service
further between the US and Cuba,”
said Robin Hayes, president and
CEO, JetBlue. “These historic flight
launches are great news for those
traveling between our two countries.”
Situated in eastern Cuba, Holguín
is the fourth largest city on the
island and is located more than 400
miles from Havana. The city center
features colonial buildings, plazas
and several notable museums. The
broader Holguín province is made
up of national parks, mountains,
nature reserves, beaches and scenic
cays.
“We commend the work of both
US and Cuban officials for making
today possible. We also commend
the Cuban Ministry of Transportation,
IACC, and the Holguín Airport
for entrusting us to operate this
route and look forward to our longterm
partnership as we continue to
grow our presence in Cuba,” Hayes
added.
Affordable fares: JetBlue offers a
low starting fare to make Cuba more
accessible to those visiting family
members or traveling to Cuba for
cultural, business or group travel.
Caribbean region first to be free
of local measles transmission
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad -- The Caribbean,
and countries of the Americas,
are first in the world to be declared free of
local measles transmission.
This historic announcement was recently
made by the International Expert
Committee for Documenting and Verifying
Measles, Rubella, and Congenital
Rubella Syndrome Elimination in the
Americas at the 55th Directing Council
of the Pan American Health Organization/World
Health Organization (PAHO/
WHO).
This means that children in the Caribbean
are now less likely to be affected by
measles, once they are vaccinated. Measles
affects mostly children and is one of the
most contagious diseases. However, widespread
use of the vaccine has led to a great
reduction in measles cases in the region.
“No local measles cases have been
reported in the Caribbean region since
1991,” stated Dr James Hospedales, executive
director, Caribbean Public Health
Agency (CARPHA).
He warned, however, that “we cannot
Children in the Caribbean
are now less likely
to be affected by
measles, once they are
vaccinated.
become complacent, as measles still circulates
in other parts of the world.”
He went on to say, “Due to the high
CARPHA Executive Director, Dr James
Hospedales
intensity of international travel related to
the large tourism sector, the Caribbean
region remains at high risk for the importation
of measles and rubella cases.”
Between 1971 and 1979, more than
100,000 deaths in the Americas were attributable
to the disease. Measles is transmitted
by airborne droplets or via direct
contact with secretions from the nose,
mouth, and throat of infected individuals.
It can cause serious complications
including blindness, severe diarrhoea, ear
infections and pneumonia, particularly in
children with nutritional problems.
Measles is the fifth vaccine-preventable
disease to be eliminated from the
Caribbean and countries of the Americas,
after the regional eradication of endemic
smallpox in 1971, polio in 1994, and rubella
and congenital rubella syndrome in
2015.
Dengue fever on the rise
Increased number of dengue fever cases
reported in Turks and Caicos
PROVIDENCIALES, TCI -- The ministry
of health in the Turks and Caicos
Islands (TCI) has reported an increase
in the number of dengue fever cases as a
result of the recent rains in the TCI. This
increase is mainly observed on Grand
Turk where a total of 14 cases were reported
during the period October 29 to
November 6, 2016.
In response, the ministry continues
to enhance prevention and control measures
already in place against diseases
transmitted by mosquitoes. These include
education, premises inspections,
fogging and treating potential breeding
sites such as swamps to prevent mosquito
breeding.
Dengue fever is a viral illness, which
is spread by the bite of an infected Aedes
aegypti mosquito. This mosquito is
found throughout the Americas, including
the TCI. It is found in and around
homes, workplaces, and schools.
Symptoms of dengue fever include
fever, muscle and joint pains, excessive
tiredness, headache and pain behind
the eyes. Nausea and vomiting may also
occur. A rare severe form of dengue fever,
dengue hemorrhagic fever, presents
with episodes of bleeding. The public
is advised to seek medical attention at
the nearest clinic facility if any of these
symptoms are experienced.
There is no vaccine to prevent dengue
fever. Treatment is given to minimise the
symptoms being experienced as a result
of the infection. Persons who think they
have dengue should use analgesics (pain
relievers) with acetaminophen and avoid
those containing ibuprofen, Naproxen,
aspirin or aspirin containing drugs. They
should also rest, drink plenty of fluids to
prevent dehydration and avoid mosquito
bites while febrile. The majority of persons
recover within five to fourteen days.
The Venezuelan medical
brigade has left Haiti
Following the passage of Hurricane
Matthew on Haiti, an international
relief brigade of 40 Venezuelan doctors
provided care to more than 6,000
Haitians. The medical brigade, who
has completed its mission, returned
to Venezuela on Friday 11 November,
where it was received at Maiquetia
Vargas International Airport (Central
North), notably by the Executive
Vice-President of Venezuela, Aristobulo
Isturiz, the Minister of Health, Luisana
Melo and the Ambassador of Haiti,
David Lesly and other authorities.
“We welcome you on behalf of the
Venezuelan people and President
Nicolas Maduro. You are heroes of
the Republic, you have done an extraordinary
job and all our citizens are
proud of your brigade which has been
in solidarity with the people of Haiti,”
declared Vice-President Isturiz.
Meanwhile, Delia Mundaray, the
“We have worked with
our hearts for each of
the patients we have
assisted on behalf of
our country.”
Medical Representative of the International
Rescue Brigade, declared
that “The Haitian people received free
medical care from us,” assuring that
“the army of white blouses has fulfilled
the mission entrusted by President
Nicolas Maduro [...] We have
worked with our hearts for each of the
patients we have assisted on behalf of
our country, as the greatest legacy that
left us the eternal Commander Hugo
Chavez.”

Prince Harry to arrive in Antigua
ST JOHN’S, Antigua, – Prince Harry
will begin his Caribbean tour in Antigua
on Sunday, November 20.
Upon arrival at V.C. Bird International
Airport on a scheduled, commercial
flight, Prince Harry will be met by the
sights and sounds so traditionally associated
with the Caribbean, as a local band
provides the soundtrack for an Antigua
and Barbuda Defence Force military parade,
during which His Royal Highness
will formally inspect the Guard. That
evening, Prince Harry will attend a reception
hosted by the Governor General,
His Excellency Sir Rodney Williams,
featuring cultural performances introducing
His Royal Highness to Antiguan
life. This will be the very first event held
at the newly renovated Clarence House,
a historic building which overlooks the
spectacular Nelson’s Dockyard and English
Harbour. Evenings in this part of
Antigua are renowned for their stunning
sunsets, as Prince Harry will hopefully
see on his first night in the Eastern Caribbean.
His Royal Highness’s first morning in
Antigua will kick off with a Youth Sports
Festival at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.
Many Caribbean Islands have a
fantastic record of producing some of
the finest cricket players in the world,
and Antigua is no exception. Prince
Harry will be hosted by three of Antigua
& Barbuda’s cricketing legends: Sir
Vivian Richards, Sir Andy Roberts and
Sir Curtly Ambrose. Together they will
tour the grounds meeting local children
and young people showcasing the many
national sports played in Antigua and
Barbuda. The power of sport to create
positive change for young people and
communities is a key focuses of Prince
Harry’s official work.
From there, His Royal Highness will
attend a Charities Showcase event in the
tropical grounds of Government House,
in Antigua’s capital St John’s. Charities
including the Nolan Hue and the Halo
Foundation, Scouts and the Girl Guides,
will highlight the crucial work that they
are carrying out in Antigua and Barbuda.
That evening, His Royal Highness will
visit Barnacle Point to attend a reception
hosted by Prime Minister Mr Gaston
Browne, at which a number of Antiguan
and Barbudan young cultural ambassadors
will also be in attendance.
Day three of the tour will see Prince
Harry leave the shores of Antigua for a
short helicopter ride to its sister island of
Barbuda. This island remains untouched
in many areas, and with a population of
around 1800 residents, its famous pink
and white sandy beaches can often seem
deserted. The same cannot be said however
for the nearby lagoons where thousands
of Frigate birds flock to each year
for their annual mating season, making
Barbuda one of the world’s largest colonies
for this species. His Royal Highness
will get up close to these impressive birds
on a boat tour through the mangroves.
Back on shore, Prince Harry will make
the short walk to one of two schools in
Barbuda, Holy Trinity Primary School.
Here His Royal Highness will join the
Caribbean Times | November 17-30, 2016
By Dr. Horace Bartilow
The Presidential electoral victory
of Donald Trump caught
the corporate media and the
general public by complete surprise.
But not me. In August of
2015, just one month after Mr.
Trump announced his candidacy,
I made the prediction during
a lecture in my American Foreign
class at the University of
Kentucky that he would not only
win the Republican nomination
but would go on to beat Hilary
Clinton, the presumptive nominee
of the Democratic party.
So why did all the polls who
had Secretary Clinton far ahead
Focus on class, politics and the
2016 U.S. presidential election
of Mr. Trump in both the popular
vote and Electoral College
get the election outcome so very
wrong? Bear in mind that when
I made my prediction back in
August 2015, it was not based
on any polling data. In fact, very
little polling data existed at the
time.
My prediction was guided by
a Class Analysis of American
politics. The cumulative effects
of free trade arrangements such
as NAFTA, the deregulation
of the U.S. financial sector, the
massive tax cuts for the rich
coupled with major cuts in government
spending for public
housing, rent assistance programs,
social services and various
job training programs that
once were ladders of upward
mobility for poor and working
class Americans have widened
income inequality in the United
States. In 2015, income inequality
was 7 percentage points
higher than in 1980 and the
top decile of earnings has risen
from 150 percent of the median
in 1950 to 244 percent in 2012.
From 1999 to 2012, the income
of middle class Americans declined
by more than 9 percent,
while the average income of the
top 5 percent grew by 52 percent.
The growing class cleavage
in the United States reverberated
in both the primaries and
the recent presidential election.
Working class Americans have
rejected the politics of the corporate
controlled establishment
Republican and Democratic
parties. During the Democratic
Republican primaries, they
turned to perceived political
outsiders Burnie Sanders and
Donald Trump. While both candidates
are at opposite poles of
the ideological spectrum their
political rhetoric rejected both
NAFTA and the proposed Trans
Pacific Partnership free trade
agreement, which resonated in
Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania,
and Wisconsin – the Rust-Belt
states where the perception
that NAFAT has led to massive
job loss was a crucial factor in
working class and rural voters’
support for Donald Trump.
Liberal and conservative
commentators overlook these
class dimensions because they
reveal the inherent contradictions
of American capitalism
and therefore choose to define
Mr. Trump’s victory largely in
terms of what one CNN commenter
call’s “A Whitelash” –
meaning that Mr. Trump’s base
of political support, which was
predominantly White, male,
and rural was a rejection of
the Obama Presidency and the
‘Browning’ of America. Race
and the manipulation of the
xenophobic fears of Mexicans
and Muslims by the Trump
campaign certainly played a
role but it was not the driving
mechanism of Donald Trump’s
victory. In other words, in the
absence of the growing class
division in American politics,
race, while important is not sufficient
to explain Trump’s victory.
In multi-ethnic societies,
xenophobia takes place within
the context class cleavages and
is always used by the ruling political
elite to divide and weaken
the working class.
By Gerry Hopkin
First of all, we must accept
the outcome of the electoral
process and the office of the US
president.
Beyond that, we ought not be
surprised at the results, even if
one voted for Hillary Clinton
and hoped that she would have
won, as the lesser of two undesirable
candidates for the office
of president. (My initial choice
was candidate Bernie Sanders
whose record was impeccable.
Telling it as it is: Dealing with the reality
of President-elect Donald Trump
Comey, the FBI director, would
have had no basis for the dropping
of a ticking time-bomb
against Sanders.)
If nothing else, it ought to be
clear to all that ridiculous racism,
insensitivity and ignorance
are alive in America, since a silent
majority of Americans were
ready and willing to vote for a
man who espoused and engendered
the following:
• the making of racially
charged remarks against Hispanics
and blacks, plus a questionable
history of discriminating
against minorities who
sought access to his apartments;
• endorsements from the Ku
Klux Klan;
• the making of misogynistic
remarks against women;
• having had a history of
untoward behavior that’s disrespectful
of women;
• the withholding of his tax
returns from public scrutiny,
which runs counter to what’s
expected and proper;
• the vindictive ad hominem
attacks against his opponents
and the stated assumption that
he can break the law (“shoot a
man”) and get away with it, said
during his campaign for president;
• the hypocritical claim that
he resents the export of American
jobs/factories, while he
himself manufactures products
in China and Mexico and uses
Chinese steel instead of that
which is made in America, for
his latest construction project;
and
• the absence of a definitive
plan as to how the US economy
would be sustainably managed
over the next four years.
Maybe our new president
would change his modus operandi
and transform into a more
caring, sensitive individual who
would respect all Americans
and immigrants, equally. That is
my prayer, as I continue respecting
the office of the President of
the United States of America.
Of course, if he fails to act
in a transformed manner, we
would rely on legal recourse via
the judiciary and impeachment
through the legislature.
However, some may query,
how can we expect checks and
balances when our new president
is about to appoint a pivotal
justice for the US Supreme
Court and now has Republicans
as the majority in both the Senate
and the House of Representatives?
Will democracy be
protected? Or are we entering
a period of de facto totalitarianism,
where one party will be
making all the laws at the federal
level?
Let’s pray for sanity, respect
for each other and the rule of
just laws in America, folks.
And let’s give President Donald
Trump the respect which his
office requires, so that he may
exercise his leadership. May we
show him this respect for as
long as he proves by his words
and actions in office, that he is
deserving of our respect.
Yet beware, racism is, unfortunately,
alive and well in America,
today.

welcome to another Caribbean Newspaper
in our midst.
I must say that the presentation of the Paper
it, I am happy to see that it is not sensationalizing
crime and other negative things going
on in the U.S, New York, and the Caribbean.
We are already getting more than our fair
share of that reporting from other Media
sources.
Editor, with the popularity of electronic
devices, while older folks like me prefer our
printed Newspapers, the younger generation
read their news on line, so I am encouraging
you to explore on-line publication of your
Newspaper, as others are doing.
I realize that yours is a young venture, I
wish it all the best, and I hope that the advertisers
will help to keep you in business.
I do not believe that there will ever be a
shortage of stories to publish, because there
are a lot of things going on with West Indians
living in different parts of America.
Since we are not living in our different
homelands at present, your Newspaper could
keep us abreast of the various cultural, political,
and sporting activities that are going on
in the various islands.

Yours truly
Dear Editor,
I would like to know what is the purpose
of the Heads of States of poor Caribbean
countries coming every September to attend
the U.N. General Assembly in New
York.
To me, the only purpose of the visit, is to
deliver a speech which does not seem to see
the light of day, and to give the impression
that they also matter on the world stage....
That is wishful thinking.
A friend of mine told me that those
Heads of States do not only come to make
speeches, but they also make useful contacts
with U.N. Agencies which give aid and
assistance to their countries.
I disagreed with my friend, because from
my humble observation, all that I see these
leaders doing is socializing with fellow bigshots
at the U.N., and giving speeches to
their people who living here.
I might be wrong, but I believe that the
money that the Caribbean Heads of State
and their accomplices use to travel to New
York, and to stay here at expensive hotels,
could be better used to help the poor people
in their different countries.
It might be a good thing to ask those
Heads of State when they return home, to
give accounts of what they achieved while
they were in New York.
The election
On election Tuesday,
I was nervous
waiting in the way
for the obvious.
I was part of an election watch
in a party,
waiting to catch
the winning victory.
I had a crazy thirst
as I took note
of who bringing first
in the national vote.
I looked at the lines
filled with persons
who want to express their minds
in the elections.
End of leniency period for
electronic travel authorization
for travellers to Canada
OTTAWA, Canada -- The government
of Canada has reminded travellers to get
the appropriate travel documents before
booking a flight to Canada.
Starting November 10, 2016, visa-exempt
travellers (except US citizens) will
need an electronic travel authorization
(eTA) to board their flight to Canada. Canadian
citizens, including dual citizens,
will need a valid Canadian passport to fly
to or transit through Canada.
To help minimize travel disruptions
for dual Canadian citizens, a short-term
measure is available to dual citizens
whose second citizenship is from a visa-exempt
country. These dual citizens
can apply for a special authorization that
will let them board their flight to Canada
using their valid non-Canadian passport.
This short-term measure, which will be
available until January 31, 2017, is open
to dual citizens who have an imminent
flight to Canada (leaving in less than ten
days) and whose Canadian citizenship
can be verified by Immigration, Refugees
and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
If approved, the authorization will be
valid for four days from the date of travel
indicated in the application. Those not
eligible for the authorization will need to
contact the nearest government of Canada
office abroad to obtain the appropriate
travel document.
“eTA improves the safety of Canadians
by allowing us to check that travellers are
admissible before they board their flight,
preventing those who are inadmissible
from travelling to Canada in the first
place,” said John McCallum, minister of
immigration, refugees and citizenship.
“We have been doing everything we can
to inform affected travellers about these
new requirements, and I am pleased that
we can now offer a short-term measure
to help get some dual Canadian citizens
who are not familiar with this new requirement
onto their flight to Canada.”
The eTA entry requirement became
mandatory for visa-exempt foreign nationals
(other than US citizens) travelling
to Canada temporarily by air on March
15, 2016. However, a leniency period was
put in place from March 15 until November
9 so travellers unfamiliar with the
eTA requirement could still board their
flight to Canada.
Quick facts
• Applying for an eTA is a simple online
process that costs CAN$7. The government
of Canada website, Canada.ca/
eTA, is the only valid site where travellers
can apply for an eTA.
• More than 2.3 million eTAs have
been issued since the application went
live on August 1, 2015.
• Canadian permanent residents cannot
apply for an eTA and, as usual, must
show their valid permanent resident card
or obtain a permanent resident travel
document from the nearest government
of Canada office abroad when returning
to Canada by air.
• Citizens of the US are exempt from
the eTA requirement. US lawful permanent
residents need an eTA and must
present a valid US permanent resident
card (Green Card) and a valid passport
when they check in for their flight to
Canada.
West Indies open their campaign
against Sri Lanka
HARARE—Captain Jason Holder
hopes the key areas addressed during
the recent one-week camp in South Africa
will see West Indies turn the page on
their dodgy One-Day International form,
in the Tri-Nations Series here which
bowled off yesterday.
West Indies were swept 3-0 by Pakistan
last month and have now lost 12 of
their last 16 games in the last four bilateral
series. They were good enough to
reach the final of the Tri-Nations Series
against Australia and South Africa in the
Caribbean earlier this year, but lost to the
Aussies.
“I think it is a situation where we
need to come together as a team. We’ve
struggled in the last few one-day series in
terms of batting the 50 overs and that is
one area we have addressed,” Holder said
ahead of his side’s first game tomorrow.
“In terms of the bowling, we need to
be a lot better in the first power-play and
then we have to close in the last 10 overs.
Those are the significant areas we have
paid some attention to.
“I think once we do that and we string
some big partnerships [together]—in the
Evin Lewis goes for a big hit during the West Indies training at the Country Club Cricket Ground
in Harare, Zimbabwe yesterday. Photo courtesy WICB Media
past I think we have found ourselves getting
a lot of starts but not carrying on—
we leave less for the middle and lower
order to do.”
West Indies open their campaign
against Sri Lanka before taking on the
hosts on Saturday in their second outing.
Last year, the Caribbean side suffered
a 3-0 whitewash away to the Sri Lankans
and Holder said they were expecting a
strong challenge from them again, along
with a tough showing from Zimbabwe.
“It’s going to be tough. Obviously they
are two good teams. Sri Lanka play good
cricket and obviously are of a higher rank
than us and Zimbabwe have a point to
prove,” the all-rounder explained.
“They are playing in their backyard as
well so they will be [familiar] with their
conditions. It’s a situation where we have
to assess as early as possible and go out
and play some good aggressive cricket.”
West Indies endured a long difficult
tour of the United Arab Emirates recently,
where they were trounced in the
Twenty20, one-day and Test series by Pakistan.
Their only success came in the final
Test in Sharjah when they produced
an admirable performance to win by
five wickets. Holder said the camp in
Potchefstroom had been a great chance
for the unit to re-assess.
“We had a good week in Potchefstroom.
I thought the guys had a few days
off to catch themselves and recuperate after
the long series in Dubai,” he said.
Equal travel rights for
female athletes
The ICC has promised to provide equal
travel rights to women-cricketers who
will be playing in next year’s Women’s
World Cup in England. This decision
was taken after protests to the ICC
which flew male teams via Business
class to the recent World Twenty over
tournament in India earlier this year,
while the Women’s team had to fly
Continued from page 7
JetBlue includes Cuban government-required
health insurance
coverage for all travelers on all Cuba-bound
flights so that customers
do not have to worry about obtaining
the insurance separately.
Affidavit in a few clicks: Under
US regulations, every customer traveling
to Cuba must complete an affidavit
affirming the customer is going
for one of 12 reasons of approved
travel from the US Department of
Treasury. JetBlue has built the completion
of the affidavit right into the
booking process so it can be finished
in only a couple of clicks.
Day-of-travel Cuban Tourist Visa
(Tourist Card): Separate from the
US-regulated 12 categories, Cuba requires
visitors to obtain an entrance
visa onto the island. For customers
who qualify for a Cuban Tourist
Visa (Tourist Card), JetBlue will
make those available for purchase
upon check-in at one of its gateway
airports or at the gate for connecting
customers on the day of travel. All
travelers to Cuba should make their
own determination with respect to
the appropriate type of visa required
by Cuba for their purpose of travel.
In addition to Santa Clara,
Camagüey and Holguín, JetBlue
will launch service between Havana’s
José Martí International Airport
(HAV) and New York’s John F. Kennedy
International Airport (JFK),
Orlando International Airport
(MCO), and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood
later this month. With up to
seven daily flights between the US
and Cuba, JetBlue is committed to
investing in and growing new Cuban
markets.
JetBlue’s commercial service follows
nearly five years of successful
charter service operating multiple
routes between Cuban markets and
US cities. In that time, JetBlue has
built strong relationships with airport
authorities and worked closely
together to make the launch of commercial
service possible.
school children busy preparing celebrations
for the school’s 93rd anniversary of
their Founders’ Day. His Royal Highness
will then travel the short distance up the
road to Sir McChesney George High
School, Barbuda’s secondary school with
an impressive attitude towards conservation
and promoting sustainability. Here,
Prince Harry will see how students manage
and utilise the natural resources they
have access to in Barbuda as a small island
state; whether it be practicing water
harvesting, cultivating crops, or poultry
farming, and meet the pupils who are
empowered and knowledgeable as a result.
That afternoon, back in Antigua,
Prince Harry will unveil the first of four
dedications towards The Queen’s Commonwealth
Canopy project at the Victoria
Park Botanical Gardens in St John’s.
The visit coincides with the city’s annual
Arbour Day Fair, part of an innovative
sustainable programme which encourages
the public to return used plant bags in
exchange for a tree of their own choosing.
Prince Harry will meet those behind
the scheme, including those growing
90,000 trees to be planted across the island,
before unveiling a commemorative
plaque to mark the dedication of the park
to the QCC, next to an enormous Rubber
tree that dominates the gardens.
From Antigua, Prince Harry will depart
for the second country of the tour,
St. Kitts and Nevis. On arrival, His Royal
Highness will receive an official welcome
by way of a military parade at Port Zante,
where Prince Harry will formally inspect
the Guard, before departing with the
Governor General, His Excellency Sir
Tapley Seaton, for his first engagement,
a youth rally at Brimstone Hill Fortress.
This spectacular UNESCO World Heritage
Site sits 800 feet above sea level, in
the shadow of Mount Liamigua. Here,
Prince Harry will watch traditional dances,
hear Caribbean songs and listen to local
poetry recitals, all led by the inspiring
young people of this country. It is here
that His Royal Highness will also unveil
the St Kitts and Nevis dedication to The
Queens Commonwealth Canopy Project
– all of the forest above an elevation of
1000 feet within the Central Forest Reserve
National Park which also forms an
impressive backdrop to the performance
itself.
Prince Harry will then travel by boat
to Charlestown Pier on the neighbouring
island of Nevis. As he arrives, His Royal
Highness will be welcomed to the island
by local residents of Nevis who he
will have the opportunity to meet, before
travelling to a local turtle conservation
initiative on Lovers Beach. The Nevis
Turtle Group was formed in 2003 by Mr
Lemuel Pemberton, and is dedicated to
developing a Sea Turtle Conservation
Programme for Nevis that, by involving
the local community, will ensure that sea
turtles are protected for years to come.
Volunteers work every night on the
beaches that surround Nevis tagging sea
turtles and collecting information about
their nesting habits and movements.
Alongside Mr Pemberton, Prince Harry
will inspect the turtle nests along the
beach, many of which can include up to
500 turtle eggs per nest.
That evening, His Royal Highness will
return to St Kitts where he will attend a
reception hosted by the Governor General
at Government House. Prince Harry
will meet young leaders and people from
St Kitts and Nevis including the country’s
Chevening Scholars and Commonwealth
Youth organisations.
deportation
Continued from page 1
(CMC) “I want you to know that, in partnership
with the Haiti Renewal Alliance
and the United Front of the Haitian Diaspora,
I am supporting an online petition
to the White House, requesting that
President Obama halt the deportation of
Haitian nationals, which will allow critical
resources in the form of remittances
to fund the recovery in Haiti.
US Congresswoman, Yvette D. Clarke.
US Congresswoman, Yvette D. Clarke.
“If we obtain 100,000 signatures in 30
days, the community will receive an official
response from the White House,”
stressed the daughter of Jamaican immigrants,
whose Brooklyn district has the
second largest concentration of Haitians
in the US. Miami is reported to have the
highest.
In late September, Clarke expressed
deep concern about the US Department
of Homeland Security’s (DHS) recent decision
to resume the deportation of undocumented
Haitian immigrants.
“As we are all too aware, over the past
decade, Haiti has unfortunately been severely
impacted by natural disasters and
marijuana
Continued from page 4
prohibition nationally, and even internationally,
is fast approaching.”
California has long been seen as a bellwether
by both supporters and opponents
of marijuana reform. The state is home to
about 12 percent of the U.S. population.
Given the size of the state’s economy and
the economic impact of the marijuana
industry there, California’s adoption of
legal marijuana could prompt federal
authorities to rethink their decades-long
prohibition on the use of marijuana.
In a recent interview with Bill Maher,
President Obama said that passage of the
legalization measures on Tuesday could
make the current federal approach to the
drug “untenable.”
Still, the likelihood of a Trump White
House leaves a lot of uncertainty about
the fate of marijuana measures in the
next four years. Under Obama, federal
authorities largely took a hands-off approach
to state-level legalization efforts.
But an incoming administration more
skeptical of drug reform could easily reverse
that approach.
“The prospect of Rudy Giuliani or
Chris Christie as attorney general does
not bode well,” the Drug Policy Alliance’s
Nadelmann said in an interview. “There
political instability, which contributed to
its status as the poorest country in the
Western Hemisphere and caused extreme
hardship in the lives of her people,” she
said.
Clarke said she was “particularly concerned
about the timing of this DHS action,
which occurs just a few weeks ahead
of Haiti’s upcoming elections”.
The DHS had suspended deportation
of Haitians living illegally in the US in
the immediate aftermath of the massive
earthquake that struck the country in
2010.
The passage of Hurricane Matthew, a
month ago, has further exacerbated Haiti’s
plight, prompting the Haitian Diaspora
group to launch the online petition,
supported by Clarke.
On Friday, the United Nations also
warned that, while it seems as if “the
world has moved on,” Haiti’s needs remain
vast.
The UN said this is exemplified by the
nearly 600,000 children being stalked by
disease, hunger and malnutrition, and in
need of assistance.
UNICEF also said that there have been
at least 1,000 suspected cholera cases
among children in the past month.
are various ways in which a hostile White
House could trip things up.”
Still, Nadelmann pointed to the success
of marijuana measures in the midst
of an evident Republican wave as a sign
that support for legalization now cuts
deeply across party lines. And citing
Trump’s often contradictory statements
on marijuana and drug use in the past,
Nadelmann added that “Donald Trump
personally could probably go any which
way on this.”
With today’s votes, legal marijuana is
also making significant inroads in the
Northeast. “Marijuana legalization has
arrived on the East Coast,” said Tom Angell
of the marijuana reform group Marijuana
Majority in an email. “What Colorado
and other states have already done
is generating revenue, creating jobs and
reducing crime, so it’s not surprising that
voters in more places are eager to end
prohibition.”
Opponents of legalization said they
were disappointed by the outcomes. “We
were outspent greatly in both California
and Massachusetts, so this loss is disappointing,
but not wholly unexpected,”
said Kevin Sabet of the anti-legalization
group Smart Approaches to Marijuana in
a statement. “Despite having gained considerable
ground in the last few weeks,
the out-of-state interests determined to
make money off of legalization put in too
much money to overcome.”
