N.Veeraiyan (1882-1938) was an ardent fighter against social e\.ils. llis<br />
fight against the atrocities committed by the caste Hindus in post officcs,<br />
temples, and public roads is still in the lnelnory of the people of Madras.<br />
Swami Sahajanandam: [1891-19591<br />
Swamiji was a great scholar in Tamil and Sanskrit. Equipped with a sound<br />
knowledge of the religious scripture he challenged the entirc body of priests of'<br />
Chidambaram temple for the Temple Entry Movement. For his own people<br />
[Depressed Class] he constructed a separate temple called the Sivaloganatl~ar<br />
Temple in Chidambaram. Mahatma Gandhiji had laid the foundation stone for<br />
it in 1913.<br />
E.V.Ramasami [1879-1973][Thanthai Periyar] occupies a unique place<br />
in Tamil Nadu. Social Reform in general is acquainted with his name in Tamil<br />
Nadu. In 1924 he led the famous Vaikom Satyagrahu at the request of other<br />
Satagrahists like George Joseph and Neelakanda Nambudri. This Sutyugrahu<br />
was connected with temple entry. Periyar was arrested but he achieved his goal.
