Well Old Man
Winter doesn’t seem to
be letting up any time
soon, especially with the
snow and wind we’ve
been receiving. If this
continues we will be well
buried by the time spring
arrives. It was nice to
see the sunshine today
though and warmer
temps are on the way,
so maybe some of the
new snow piling up will
melt somewhat before
the next dump. The deer
are having quite a time
looking for food and
almost getting stuck in
the deep snow even in
the yards. About 20 were
spotted just at the edge of
town on Sunday.
I guess Manitoba
Merv was right, winter is
Riverside Rosenort News
by Lorraine Loewen
The month of
February is special
in many ways!! The
Groundhog Day was
observed with a sunny
day giving us at least
another 6 weeks of
winter! Valentines day
comes on the 14 th with
many meals and of
course lots of candy and
flowers.
On Saturday, the
Multi Plex was well
filled for the hockey
games that took place
with funds raised for
Cancer care, the results
coming in at more than
20,000 dollars! Word
has it that Pat Schmitke
of BigWay was one of
the candidates who had
their heads shaved!!!
It is an exciting time
to be celebrating the
Sapphire jubilee of
the Queen’s 65 th year
as our longest reigning
monarch. On Monday
Feb 6 th new portraits
will be made available.
How amazing to see her
youthful appearance
and agility!
not going away quickly!
With the beginning of
February, “I Love to Read
Month” has officially
begun at RVS! This year,
their theme is Dr. Seuss
and the school’s literacy
committee has planned
some exciting events.
Each Friday, there will
be two events: Dress up
Fridays and Mystery Box
Draws! Students got to
wear their favourite hat
on February 3 rd , and a
mustache on February
10 th. They can wear
pajamas on February
17 th and their craziest
socks on February 24 th .
The students who can
make the correct guess
on a book quote and are
chosen from the Mystery
Box get to win a prize!
Jacob and Diana
Waldner are excited to
announce the birth of
their first born, Isabella
Rose, on January
30 th . Best wishes to
grandparents Deanna
and Ben Waldner.
Many from our area
attended the Mission
Fest in Wpg. over the
week end held at the
Church of the Rock. It
was interesting to see so
many displays featuring
work in Wpg. as well as
surrounding districts.
Seven guest speakers
were invited to speak
at the main sessions
throughout the weekend.
Get well wishes go
out to Rebekah Friesen
(Trevor) who had surgery
on Thursday. Also, better
health is wished for
Florence Friesen (Jake)
as well as Judy Schmidt
(Dave).
Once again, we are
digging out of more
snow!! It looks like this
time we are not the only
ones! Lorne’s sister Doris
and Jake Kornelsen of
Throughout the
month, they will be
having a few guests. On
February 13 th , they will
be hosting the Winkler
Flyers. On February 16 th ,
story teller Leigh-Anne
Kehler will be joining
RVS. During that same
week, Roseau Valley
School Library will be
having a book swap.
Any student can bring
in unwanted books to
receive a book token.
At the end of the week,
the book tokens can be
cashed in for other books
students have brought
to swap! From February
21 st to the 24 th it will be
“Drop Everything and
Read Week”, and it can
happen anytime! Finally,
the month comes to a
close on Friday, February
24 th as they celebrate
all of their reading
Abbotsford BC sent some
outstanding pictures
of the snow they have
had in the last while.
People were walking on
snowshoes in places they
could not drive, I am sure
it will be sometime before
everything is plowed.
But then, of course, they
have nicer temperatures
to melt some of that.
It was interesting to
see Norman and Ardis
Friesen come back from
sunny Hawaii to the
snow!!
George and Jackie
Thiessen returned from
a wonderful vacation to
Puerta Vallarta, enjoying
the nice weather. While
there they met Leroy
and Lois Friesen and
Ervin and Erica Friesen
of Rosenort as well as
Margaret Klassen of
Riverside. Margaret also
enjoyed a visit with her
son Rick and family.
The bridge over the
Morris river on Road 2E,
Riverside south, will be
closed for approximately
2 months beginning on
February 7th. Hopefully
this can all be fixed
before we begin to look
for signs of a 2017 flood
accomplishments and
also Dr. Seuss’ upcoming
birthday! This month,
the students are focusing
on goal oriented reading,
with a tally at the end of
each week on a bulletin
board. “The more that
you read, the more things
you will know. The more
that you learn, the more
places you’ll go!” –by
Dr. Seuss is a quote they
aspire to!
It is with heavy
hearts that we heard
of the passing of
Larry Carpenter Jr. on
Monday. He had fought
so valiantly against his
battle with cancer and
is finally at peace. Our
whole community share
in the sorrow that his
family and friends feel
at the loss of this very
caring, fun-loving young
man. Our hearts go out to
his sisters, Cindy, Holly
and Candace.
Stick curling
continues every Friday.
The canteen features
weekly meal specials on
Friday at great prices and
the bar is open to all.
Saturday February 11 th
at 5:00 pm with supper
starting at 5 pm. There
will also be a silent
Michella has always
been a very active and
June of 2012 she woke
up and was unable
to get out of bed by
herself. With a great
deal of determination
and miracle from above,
she has learned to walk
and function in her
condition for the past
four and a half years with
constant intense pain.
Despite many specialist
appointments her
condition has remained
undiagnosed until now.
In August of 2016,
Michella went to
see an international
spinal surgeon, Dr.
Feingenbaum, and it
was finally confirmed
that she has three
spinal sacral meningeal
cysts in her spinal
column and tailbone
which are cutting off
nerve circulation and
causing much pain,
reduced movement,
and numbness. He
positively diagnosed
that this has been the
cause of the symptoms
all along. The door has
swung wide open for
opportunity to get help.
Surgery is planned for
February 20-21 and will
be performed in Cypress,
Funding Foreign Abortions
Prime Minister
Trudeau has long been
a vocal proponent
of abortion. Many
Canadians remember
his ultimatum in May
of 2014 that anyone
who thought differently
than him on this subject
need not apply to run as
Liberal candidates in the
federal election. Though
historically the Liberal
Party allowed a greater
range of opinions,
under Justin Trudeau
some sitting Liberal
MPs suddenly had the
welcome mat pulled
from beneath their feet.
Last May, as
thousands of Canadian
women and men
gathered on Parliament
Hill to call for the
human rights of the
unborn to be respected
– one of the largest
rallies each year – the
Prime Minister quietly
lifted the restriction
that prevented federal
foreign aid dollars from
being used for abortion
services overseas.
Then just recently, in
a reactionary response
to a change in American
policy, Prime Minister
Trudeau decided to
further increase Canada’s
already soaring foreign
aid budget to fund more
abortions overseas. The
Minister of International
Development, Marie-
Claude Bibeau,
announced that Canada
would join an effort
to make up the six
hundred million dollar
loss resulting from the
American decision and
establish a dedicated
fund for abortions
abroad. Missing in her
announcement was an
explanation of where
she would decrease aid
funding in order to pay for
this new commitment.
In 2015, Canada spent
$5.8 billion taxpayer
dollars on foreign
aid. Canadians are
undeniably generous,
and foreign aid can be
an effective way to help
struggling developing
countries, yet as more
and more of our tax
dollars leave the country
while Canadian families
struggle to put food
on the table and heat
their homes, we need
to ask whether paying
for abortions overseas is
really the best use of our
tax dollars.
Despite all the new
taxes he’s forcing on
Canadians as he sinks
the country into debt, the
Prime Minister seems to
think so.
Letters to the Editor
OH, PREMIER
PALLISTER, YOU
FAILED -
I thought that the
title might attract the
senses of a former school
teacher, although the
subject is far from school.
Mr. Milne lives in
Sprague, MANITOBA.
That means that Mr.
Milne is entitled the
same health care that
you and I and everyone
who lives in Manitoba
benefits from. However,
Geography plays a role
in Mr. Milne s situation.
He has to go to Roseau,
Minnesota, for health
care.
Living on the border
between Canada and
the United States is not
normally a big deal, or
particularly stressful.
Please see the article
on the back page about
Saturday’s Immigration
issue. This is the kind
of thing that wouldn’t
happen anywhere but in
a border town.
Robin Milne of
Sprague also lives on the
border, but it has caused
a different problem for
him. He had a heart
attack and went to the
nearest emergency clinic
in Roseau Minnesota.
There is an agreement
between Manitoba and
Minnesota to allow
treatment in Warroad or
Roseau for residents of
Southeastern Manitoba.
The Altru Agreement
provides that in serious
cases, a life flight should
return the patient to
Manitoba. In Milne’s
case, the flight was
ordered and he was to
return to St Boniface
Hospital in Winnipeg.
After 90 minutes and no
Unfortunately, Mr.
Milne, had a heart
attack. You’ve heard
the message. Did you
really understand the
implications?
Normally, he would
be taken to St. Boniface
Hospital. And when
he came to Emergency
in Roseau, the Doctor
serving there tried for
over an hour to get a
response from St.
Boniface Hospital,
arranging for his transfer
there for emergency
surgery. There was no
response.
So she transferred
him to Grand Forks,
Inside the Dike
On the Border
by Don Piett
firm time of arrival for the
flight, the doctor advised
going to Grand Forks
in North Dakota. With
vital minutes ticking by,
Milne agreed, and was
treated flown to Grand
Forks and treated there.
The bill for this service
was $118,000. Milne
has applied to get the
Provincial Government
to pay, but they insist
their agreement is only
with Minnesota and
since Milne agreed to go
to Grand Forks, it is his
responsibility.
The Altru agreement
has been in place for
many years and the
Minister of Health
suggests it should
be updated. I would
presume that it was put
in place as a lower cost
alternative to providing
medical facilities
for the relatively few
Manitobans who live in
the area. Sprague is 108
km south of Steinbach,
where there is a good
hospital and 75 km east of
Vita. Both communities
have ambulance service,
North Dakota, her only
other alternative, where
surgery was performed
and his life was saved.
She was the hero in this
story.
Then the bills arrived .
W h e n y o u r
government was first
elected, many of us
breathed a sigh of relief.
You even promised
Health Care Reform.
Then came a surprise
test. You and your
government failed.
You refused to pay for
a procedure which
should have happened
in Manitoba.
But since it couldn’t
be, it doesn’t let you off
the hook.
2 ambulances in Vita
and 3 in Steinbach, but
neither is close enough
to provide service to
Sprague in less than 30
minutes.
There is a health
clinic in Sprague, but
service is limited. If the
government in Manitoba
cannot provide the
medical facilities
required for its residents
in this area, they should
pay up on the cost of
having our residents go
to the United States for
medical service.
The Health Minister,
Honourable Kevin
Goertzen, who is MLA for
Steinbach, has suggested
the residents of the area
should get private health
insurance to cover them
if they have to be treated
in the United States. I
would suggest that if this
When someone fails a
test, sometimes teachers
allow a rewrite. I think
Manitobans are open
to that. But you better
get it right this time. Pay
up, Mr. Pallister, and reestablish
the credibility
of your government.
This is not a political
issue. This is a moral and
ethical issue. This is a
time to show compassion
to one of our own. And I
want to remind you that
four years pass quickly,
but people s memories
linger much longer.
Sincerely yours,
(Rev.) Bob Stark,
Dominion City,
Manitoba
is the provinces answer
to living on the border,
the government should
pay for the insurance.
Mr. Milne and
other residents of
Southeastern Manitoba
are citizens of the same
province as the rest of us
and should not have to
take out private medical
insurance to be able to
live in their homes. If
they choose to cross
the border for business
or pleasure, they need
travel insurance, just like
the rest of us, but they
shouldn’t have to get it
for their day to day lives
in Manitoba.
Come on Manitoba,
either provide full care
for people in this area, or
pay the bill to have them
go across the border. You
shouldn’t be able to have
it both ways.
“To the Point”
By Jeremy Bradley
I’m not the sell-out
It is interesting to see
how many Canadians
get riled up for American
sports. Last weekend was
the Super Bowl, arguably
the largest sporting event
in the U.S.
This was also the
first time Canadians
were able to watch the
American commercials
during Super Bowl. It
seems like more people
watch the game for the
commercials than the
actual football.
In the past, Canadian
TV networks (usually
CTV and TSN broadcast
the game) have been
able to substitute the
American feed with
their own Canadian
ads and promos. This
has outraged viewers
because of the popularity
Super Bowl commercials
have nowadays. The
CRTC changed the rules
and Canadians watching
Fox saw all American
content. We’re finally
free!
At one point in the
evening I tweeted that
Canadians should tune
into Fox and not the
Canuck channels so
they could see the ads.
A few patriots (Canada
lovers, not the actual
team) harpooned me
suggesting I was anti-
Canadian because I
was using my platform
to promote American
content.
That’s where I had
a bit of a laugh. Do you
know how many millions
of dollars a Canadian TV
network has to pay for
the rights to air American
sporting events – namely
Super Bowl?
Isn’t the argument
also being made by these
major TV networks that
they need government
funding because
advertising dollars a
drying up?
Why aren’t the
Canadian networks
airing more stuff from,
say, our country? It
seems a bit greedy for
them to spend millions
on the rights to major
American programming
yet whine to the
Canadian government
they need more money.
You might not believe
this, but homegrown
content is much cheaper
than importing from the
U.S.
People often say
Canadian production
isn’t as high quality as
American but there have
been plenty of Canadianproduced
shows that
become a hit south of the
border.
American networks
broadcast American
content just fine.
Canadian ones should
get into that habit
if they are so proudly
representing the country
and its people.
That’s my point.
What’s yours? Tell me at
Rinn's Ramblings
by Weldon Rinn
So, Super Bowl L1
has come and gone and
I would rank that as one
of the best sports games,
not just football, but
ANY games, I have ever
watched. And I don’t
cheer for either team…I
could easily take or leave
a win by The Falcons or
Pats and not lose one iota
of sleep…with perhaps
the stupidest overtime
rules I have ever heard
in play still nothing
could diminish the
hugely (“yuugely” if you
are President Trump)
entertaining and exciting
game.
It was quite cool to see
Tom Brady become the
most successful Super
Bowl quarterback in
history, not to mention
Bill Belichick become
the winning-est coach
ever in the Super Bowl.
First ever overtime game
in Super Bowl history,
man, one for the ages…
Half time, again
IMHO, was also one
for the ages, Lady Gaga
continues to set the bar
higher and higher for
herself as an entertainer
and continues to hit
it out of the park…
she delivered a very
high-tempo, upbeat,
entertaining show
of continuous action,
dance, costume changes
and fluidity…Great job!
And what do we get to
deal with the day after…
trolls and other idiots on
the Internet and in social
media body-shaming
her and making fun of
her “belly”…Jesus Wept…
we all know, or can rest
assured that most of the
people typing this quips
and insults hide behind
their keyboards, basking
in the anonymity the
Internet affords them,
and bash away at anyone
they want, safe, sound,
and out of sight! Not
likely to be pried out
into the open and hence
brave beyond all belief in
that they are free to spew
their garbage and insults.
I wonder how many
of them are of perfect
6, 8 or 12 pack abs…
buff without compare
and totally fit!?! All I
can say is “Shame on
you…” you sit back and
judge someone who
has done nothing other
than promote her music
and enjoy entertaining
others, indulge in a
bit of necessary selfpromotion
and keep
millions of people
happily tapping and
dabbing along to her
music. The ultimate
entertainer…doing
what she does best…
entertaining her fans!
Notice not the
amazing show put on by
her and her entourage,
no, negative pinheads
who chose to bash her
and her appearance
instead, the new age of
brave self-appointed
critics, half of whom are
likely living in a close
relative’s basement
and not even paying
for their own Internet
connections, let alone
rent.
The world is much too
full of needling, backstabbing,
barb-tossing
anonymous fools as it
is, the rest of the world,
not just the Lady Gagas
but those who venture
forth to do their little
part every day to keep
things going have to
sit by and tolerate the
verbal diarrhoea that
vomits forth from their
fingertips in an ongoing
and endless stream.
Our world finds new
and fascinating ways,
almost daily, to sink to
unfathomable depths
of intolerance and
ignorance and never
ceases to astound me,
even after all these years
of being exposed to the
lunacy that abounds
out there, not just on
the Internet but those
few brave souls who
actually will step forward
and openly profess, by
their words and deeds,
their lack of tolerance,
understanding and just
plain common decency
and sense. Instant Idiot
– just open mouth and
all doubt is removed…I
gotta ramble on now..
Elks National Mascot 'Charlie' presents cheque to Emerson School
Advisory Council for their playground project
The Altona Elks Lodge
#447 has just completed
a large project, an indoor
play structure in the
Millennium Pioneer
Centre in Altona. The
Elks lodge in Emerson
donated $500 to that
project to help out their
brothers and sisters in
Altona.
With the successful
completion of that
project, the Elks in
Altona decided to return
the favour and donated
$500 to the playground
project in Emerson.
'Charlie' is the
national mascot for
the Elks of Canada, the
parent organization of
both lodges. Charlie
is named after Charles
Redeker, founder of the
Order of Elks of Canada.
He was in the area after
an appearance at the
Playland opening in
Altona, so we invited him
to the Emerson Winter
Carnival. Charlie had a
good time in Emerson,
visiting with local
children Friday night at
the arena and dropping
the puck for the Emerson
A's hockey game.
As some of you may
have noticed, Charlie
wears two cochlear
implants, one for each
ear as he was born deaf.
This is a reminder of the
primary interest the Elks
of Canada have had for
the hearing impaired,
especially children. The
Elks have their own
charity, The Elks and
Royal Purple Fund for
Children, and early
deaf detection is one of
the main thrusts of the
charity.
As well as providing
assistance to children
under 18, the fund
also supports clinical
programs relating to
hearing impairment
and speech pathology.
In Manitoba the Fund
for Children and
the Manitoba Elks
Foundation support
the Central Speech
and Hearing Clinic in
Winnipeg. The clinic is a
non-profit organization
that works with the
hearing impaired and
provides help to those
affected and their
families.
The Elks of Canada
operate through
local lodges in many
communities across the
country. The order began
in Vancouver and is most
prevalent across western
Canada, but has lodges
across the country. It is
in the local lodges that
the community work is
done. The lodges raise
money and then support
worthwhile projects in
their communities.
In Emerson, the Elks
have made donations
to many community
projects like the school
playground, Canada
Day, the Emerson
Community Complex,
and the Winter Carnival.
Twister Report
by Don Piett
The Twisters broke
out of their slump (losses
in their last three games)
but it wasn’t easy. They
faced the Raiders Jr
Hockey Club on Saturday
in Morris. The Raiders
started the show with a
goal by Nikolas Lyman.
Corey Mazinke replied
for the Twisters. Both
first period goals were
scored on power plays.
In the second, the
Raiders Carson Rybuck
struck first, but Fraser
Mirrlees answered for
the home team less
than a minute later.
Thus ended the second
period, score tied 2 all.
In the third period, it
was the Twisters turn
to move ahead with a
Fraser Mirrlees second
for the night. It was
answered right away
by Devin Manness of
the Raiders. Dawson
Anderson popped one
in at the 11:45 mark
and the Raiders moved
ahead again. Not to be
left behind, the Twisters
Brendan Keck tied the
game with 3 minutes,
twenty seconds left.
There the score stayed
until the end of regulation
time. In overtime, Corey
Mazinke scored his
second goal of the night,
putting the game away
for the Twisters.
Matt Kohlman in the
net for the Twisters had
a busy day, facing 56
shots on goal from the
Raiders, turning away all
but 4. The Twisters had
26 shots on goal against
Trent Sargent.
The Twisters are in
third place in the league
with 46 points. First
and Second place go to
the Stonewall Jets and
Charleswood Hawks,
both with 51 points. St.
James is only 2 points
behind the Twisters.
Top honours in the
scoring race still belong
to Riley Beauchemin
of the St. Vital Victorias
with 33 goals and 36
assists for 69 points.
It Occurs to Me
The Ordinary Day
By Joanne Graydon
It was an ordinary
day. I got up at seven,
made coffee, added
nuts and berries to my
yogurt and checked
the computer. There is
something comforting
about a routine in the
morning that helps start
the day. I have had the
same ordinary routine for
so long, I could navigate
mornings with my eyes
closed. But life didn’t
allow our ordinary day to
continue after the phone
rang. The surgeon’s office
called with news how the
next few days would be
most unordinary.
“It Occurs to Me”
sometimes life throws a
curve. The long-awaited
surgery was scheduled
for nine o’clock the
next morning. At that
moment, everything
ordinary, changed. Even
though both of us had
been in a hospital before,
anxiety still crept in
leaving us exceptionally
quiet on the ride into
the city. We had booked
a hotel room close to the
hospital but neither of
us slept well. We were
lost in thoughts filled
with fear, panic and a
lack of control. The only
things we were sure of
was the next few days
would feel like stepping
into uncharted territory.
It is normal to be
nervous before surgery
but it is often difficult
to calm down. So many
questions popped in
my head about how I
would be able to help my
partner get through this.
And I imagine he was
thinking how he would
get through this too. But
after a short ride from the
hotel we pulled up to the
gate, pushed the button
and pulled the parking
pass out of the slot.
The hospital sat up on
a hill like an threatening
fortress built long ago.
We fell into step up the
ramp and stood together
at the automatic doors.
Once inside we rolled
the suitcase toward the
elevator while keeping
an eye on the new
environment we would
become familiar with
for the next few days.
There would be nurses
giving instructions,
doctors doing surgery,
intravenous IVs, vital
signs and medications.
And of course, plenty of
time to wait.
The surgery went well
and within four to five
hours my partner was
safely tucked in his bed
in his room. He looked
a little pale and spoke
with a groggy drugged
voice but it was clear by
the medical attention
given, he was in good
hands. I stayed with him
for a few more hours
before heading home
to tend to Sadie, the
Border collie, and warm
up the house by stoking
the woodstove. For the
next few days I traveled
back and forth to the city
to visit and watch the
excellent medical staff
work their magic.
Once my partner was
released we made a stop
at the pharmacy to pick
up prescriptions and then
headed home. Things at
home were ready for the
next phase after surgery.
The hospital bed, walker,
pillows and blankets
were a welcome sight
and my partner carefully
climbed into bed and
closed his eyes.
I think the lead up
to surgery created a lot
of apprehension and
anxiety. But neither of us
were really prepared for
the weeks of recovery at
home that we faced. With
slow and steady progress
my partner tried his best
to do his exercises but long road ahead before
it was clear he was tired my guy can hop on his
and needed to rest more tractor to feed the cattle.
than exercise. At one The next few weeks will
I called Health Links. I and he listens when
tried to stay calm and I remind him to slow
assure him he would be down, I expect he will
Well the Emerson
Winter Carnival has come
and gone and what a great
weekend it was. On behalf
of Red River Recreation I
would like to personally
thank all of our sponsors
and volunteers who
made this year’s carnival
a success. Your support
and commitment to our
community makes these
events possible and helps
to bring our community
together. Thank you!
This year saw
the return of our annual
Cardboard Toboggan
Contest where the entries
and creativity get better
each year! The winner of
the Best Sled Design went
to Ashton Ihme with his
blacked out helicopter.
The winner of the Longest
Distance Travelled went
to Kyanna Froese with her
super slick speed machine.
Thank you again to all those
who participated and we
cannot wait to see what you
can create next year!
New to the festival
this year was the Snow
Sculpture Contest which
saw fifteen different
entries! First place went
to the Breckon’s with their
Snoopy Doghouse, second
place went to the Ihme’s
with their Car, and third
place went to the Froese’s
with their Turtle. We hope
everyone had fun creating
their works of art and
participate again in 2018!
Thank you again to
everyone who was involved
with this past weekend and
to everyone who came out
and took in the events. Red
River Recreation sure had a
blast and we hope everyone
else did too!
I commented about
curlers being picky about
their ice, a petition was
almost started to get me
Pickleball is a sporting
four players use solid
THE SOUTHEAST JOURNAL February 9, 2017 Pg 16
refugees were sent to
Winnipeg by the CBSA.
There were men,
women and children
A Day on the Border
By Don Piett
It started with a phone
call at 8:30 am. The call
came from the Canadian
Border Services Agency
to Brenda Piett, Assistant
Municipal Emergency
Coordinator for the
Municipality of Emerson
Franklin. Full disclosure,
she is also my wife and
together we own this
newspaper.
The Border Agency
had fourteen asylum
seekers at Immigration
who had crossed the
border illegally during
the night. What they
didn’t have was the room
to keep that many people
for the amount of time
it would take to process
them. They asked what
we would have to do
to utilize the Emerson
Community Complex
for the refugees, similar
to when a blizzard closes
the highway.
Brenda agreed
to open the Complex
and called in another
volunteer. When the
CBSA called back, they
had four people who
they wanted taken to the
complex. The refugees
had been through
initial processing, but
they were not finished.
Brenda picked them up
and when they arrived at
the Complex, they set up
the makeshift beds and
went to sleep.
As the day went on,
more people arrived,
brought by CBSA as
initial processing moved
ahead. Later, they would
be picked up and taken
back to the border for
further processing. The
final group was picked
up at 8:30 pm. After the
final processing, the
This is how most of the refugees spent their day in Emerson
in the group. The
children were not taken
to the Complex. The
refugees came from
Somalia and Djibouti.
Communication was
very limited as they did
not speak English. One
of them spoke French,
but as we don’t, that
didn’t help.
At one point there
was 10 asylum seekers at
the Complex. As stated,
they slept most of the
day, after all they had
been up most of the
night. When they were
awake, they were very
quiet and polite. They
seemed relieved to be
somewhere warm and
safe.
As yet there was no
protocol for this, so
meetings will be held
between the Municipality
and the Border Services
to establish guidelines.
People have been
seeking asylum in
Canada for years, but
recent events have
increased the number.
With the widely
publicized ban on entry
from some Muslim
majority countries in
the United States, more
people are deciding that
the best move for them
is Canada.
This requires crossing
the border illegally, then
applying at Immigration
Manitoba Status of
Women
I would like to thank
for refugee status.
Emerson has become a
hot point for this because
it is relatively easy to
cross here, and there is a
24 hour Border Services
Agency Office.
Manitoba Sport,
Culture and Heritage
Status of Women for
the grant money. This
computer course was
a huge success!
I would also like
to thank Lorie
Greyorchuck for the
wonderful job she did
teaching us. There
were 14 participants
and everyone enjoyed
the course very much!
This was a grant from
