Weingardt advances to
state in thrilling fashion
NEIL MILBERT
Freelance Reporter
Glenbrook North had
four wrestlers in the Class
3A Barrington Sectional
but the only one to make it
to the state tournament was
senior Jacob Weingardt
(30-12), the fourth-place
finisher in the 285-pound
weight class.
After winning 2-1 in the
ultimate tiebreaker period
and the second overtime
in his opening round and
quarterfinal matches, respectively,
the workaholic
Weingardt lost by fall to
Hononegah’s number-one
ranked and undefeated
Anthony Cassioppi in the
semifinals on Saturday,
Feb. 11. Dropping to the
consolation bracket, Weingardt
gained his second
overtime decision at the
expense of Deerfield’s
Peter Runac (27-14), this
time by a 4-2 margin in
two overtimes.
At the end of regulation
time the second match with
Runac was deadlocked
1-1. An escape followed
by a two-point takedown
gave Weingardt a 4-1 lead
and he held on for the onepoint
victory.
“Everything I had went
into that match,” Weingardt
said.
In the third-place match,
Weingardt was pitted
against Auburn’s Jordan
Williams and lost by fall
at 2:35.
“Jacob has a lot of
heart,” said GBN coach
Jason Erwinski. “I work
out with him every practice.
He’s in great shape.”
In the consolation semifinals,
GBN’s 220-pound
senior, Brandon Friedman
GBN’s Brandon Friedman pins Warren’s Tyler Gano.
(28-11), lost a 13-7 decision
to Josh Dyer (29-6) of
Lake Zurich.
“Brandon didn’t achieve
his goal (of going to the
state tournament) but he
put together a good tournament,”
Erwinski said.
“He beat some very good
guys.”
Friedman also lost to
some very good opponents
— the eventual champion,
Blake Zalapi (10-0) of
Hononegah in the quarterfinals
and the eventual
third-place finisher Dyer
in his second consolation
match.
The other two GBN
contestants in the sectional,
106-pound freshman
Kazden Orshoski (17-17)
and 182-pound sophomore
Cam Casey (15-18), lost
both of their matches.
Highland Park’s threesport
star DJ Penick is
going to focus on football
when he goes to college
at Murray State but, in the
meantime, he’s ending his
high school sports career
by having a superlative
wrestling season.
Penick improved his unblemished
record to 35-0
when he earned another
trip to the state tournament
by defending his
182-pound championship
in the Barrington Sectional.
The score was 2-2 in the
title match when Penick
