She did not feel comfortable that her 10 year old would be on the bus with 12 and 13 year olds. “If it goes as planned the fifth graders will be completely isolated from the sixth, seventh and eighth graders,” Teacher’s Union President Julie Harris commented. “Right now, sometimes the fifth-graders have problems with the kindergartners on the bus. If the fifth-graders are just housed at Central but in a separate wing, I think everything will be fine.” Harris, who teaches fifth grade at Kruse Education Center, spoke out during the school board meeting urging the board to think about the additional staff Central would need, because currently there are no plans to hire additional people to help with the influx of students. “I want to make sure their needs are met, that they have the same opportunities for everything they had in their elementary schools as they do at Central,” Harris said. Her main concern is for those students who need special services. Harris stated that she does not see how the school could take on more students, but not account for the increased demand of social work services such as individualized education programs (IEP), English language learners (ELL) and more. “We will have as much administration as necessary in order to do the job well,” Stawick said in assurance in a follow up interview with The Junction. “We’ll have as much social work services as is necessary for student need. That’s always the case.” Stawick added that the public comment at the board meeting helped, and those opinions were heard by himself and the school board. “Since Monday, the Board and I have been having ongoing conversations about the topic, and we are just so appreciative of the public who have emailed, that have called [and] that have showed up to meetings,” Stawick said. “[District] 146 has always been that kind of community, and we really appreciate the parental input.” IRS problems?
