“WHO MOVED MY
CHEESE”
ome people may be aware
Sof the book Who Moved My
Cheese, by Dr Spencer
Johnson. The book is an
inspiration to embrace change.
Change can be confusing and
mostly frustrating if handled
incorrectly or even if addressed
incorrectly. We have companies
and individuals nowadays
specialising in Change
Management. These companies
or individuals are there to assist
and encourage a work
environment that embraces
change.
A few years ago a new CEO
joined the company I was working
for and immediately started
analysing the company
environment, its employees and
its future possibilities. She sees a
need to restructure the company
from the way it does business to
the roles each employee has. She
has a vision in terms of which
employees should be performing
what roles in the organisation.
Immediately she started hiring
people for new roles and for
existing ones. Now, when one
hires someone else for an existing
role, one has to move the person
currently in that role to a different
role and help them embrace the
change. This is not what
happened in this particular case;
the existing employees were not
helped to embrace the change
that came with the vision. This
resulted in resistance, or should I
say resignations and a loss of
valuable employees.
The book Who Moved My Cheese
is designed to help individuals
faced with change to embrace the
change without the assistance of
