Linton Park Community Centre – fancy giving a hand? Linton Park Community Centre is sited at the old Rotorua West Bowling Club in the Rimuvale area of our city’s west. It caters for a diverse range of residents from Pukehangi to Western Heights. ROSEMARY MACKENZIE Grey Power Rotorua, Committee Member The buildings house two large rooms available for meetings and activities plus the Community Centre office where one occasionally finds Rick Mansell, the centre manager. Most of his time is involved in communicating with volunteers and course participants, planning the many activities and keeping an eye on the flourishing community gardens. The gardens boast an array of beautiful roses, fruit trees and many garden plots where groups or individuals can grow vegetables for their own consumption or whatever takes their fancy. Like most Community Centres it is a struggle to have sufficient funding to provide the day-to-day items needed for smooth running. Most trust funds concentrate on the bigger projects, so there seems always to be a constant need for domestic items which, given the amount of use on a daily basis, soon show signs of wear and tear. If you are thinking of down-sizing your home or even have come to the realisation that what you have no longer fits your needs, the Centre would be grateful for your donation of practical things like towels and tea towels, cutlery and crockery, large cooking pots that were ideal when the family was at home and now are much too big for the two of you. The kitchen also needs to replace the old and unreliable commercial stove with a couple of domestic cookers to enable cooking classes to be more realistic for those who are missing the skills of “how to” provide healthy meals on a budget. If you have any domestic appliances that still have some life left give the Centre a call [phone 348 0757] it could be just what is needed, and much easier than trying to figure out which of the wheelie bins it goes in. The Centre would also be A view of the Linton Park Community Gardens grateful for tools and equipment for the gardens, as well as some volunteer labour to help keep things ticking over. Many of you will have skills that can still be utilised to teach those men and women, both young and not so young, who have missed out somewhere along the line, and who are anxious to improve their lives for the betterment of their children and community. There are also some special skills needed that retired tradesmen could supply for just a few hours a week along with some of those admin skills you left behind upon retiring from that office job. Computer skills are especially welcome. And if you fancy yourself as an event organiser Rick would love to hear from you. Small but important changes to realise this vision include: • Cutting back on road freight and investing in safer and cleaner rail. • Urban planners to make more room for high quality public spaces • Urban areas that are age-friendly – that work well for young, old and people with disabilities • Renters having stability so they put down roots in their community • Actively working towards the bold vision of rivers that you can swim in and safe drinking water.
